Nicholls, LSU and other Louisiana universities hold off on COVID vaccine mandate

Nicholls, LSU and other Louisiana universities hold off on COVID vaccine mandate
Adrian Dubose
BATON ROUGE -- Students attending LSU and UL colleges, including Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, will not be required to get COVID-19 vaccines to attend school this fall.
The two Louisiana college systems do not plan to enact such a mandate until federal regulators fully approve the COVID-19 vaccines now being distributed, officials said Thursday.
Federal approval is unlikely to come until well after classes begin next month, meaning that many of LSU’s 35,000 students and its faculty and staff members will depend on mandatory masking, air filters and some degree of social distancing to protect them from the surging delta variant.

Why Louisiana Schools Are Sticking With Plans For In-Person Classes Despite Recent COVID Spike

With COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations on the rise in Louisiana, some parents have begun to question whether their children will be able to start the school year in-person. But ask any school or health official and the answer — at least for now — is still the same: Schools will reopen.
While the fourth wave of the pandemic may feel frighteningly similar to the second,
“What's different is that the guidance is resounding and clear,” Tiffany Delcour, chief operating officer for New Orleans Public Schools said in an interview late last week regarding the district's decision to bring students back to the classroom. “In-person learning is a necessary priority and it's the best way to provide a quality education to students.”

Gulf State Schools Had Mask Mandates Last Fall. That Isn't The Case This Year.

Students at Red River Elementary in Coushatta, Louisiana work on a reading comprehension exercise in early June shortly after Gov. John Bel Edwards lifted his school mask mandate. June 8, 2021.
When schools started classes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, students and teachers were required to wear masks to help stop the spread of the infectious disease. That is not the case this year.
In all three states, the governors have left the decision up to local districts, many of which are reluctant to weigh in on an issue that typically generates fierce debate. A small number of schools have already reopened in the Gulf South, while the majority of students are set to return to the classroom over the next two weeks.

Instant grades for every 2021 NBA Draft first round pick

Instant grades for every 2021 NBA Draft first round pick
Let’s grade every first round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
The Detroit Pistons are on the clock with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft, and there is zero suspense this year on who will be the first pick.
Cade Cunningham leads a draft class that is defined by star-power at the top. While Cunningham will be Detroit’s choice with the first pick, both USC center Evan Mobley and G League Ignite shooting guard Jalen Green are talented enough to go No. 1 overall in a vacuum. With Jalen Suggs also establishing himself as a terrific prospect during his freshman year at Gonzaga, the 2021 NBA Draft will be remembered for the excellent quartet of players taken with the first four picks.

Four Seasons New Orleans sets opening date; see inside

Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences is opening its hotel, signature bar and one of its main restaurants next month.
The hotel, Chandelier Bar and “Miss River,” a restaurant led by New Orleans chef Alon Shaya, will open to the public Aug. 17, said Brad Packer, hotel spokesman. Room availability starts Sept. 1.
The $500 million redevelopment of the former World Trade Center at the foot of Canal Street began construction in 2018.
The Chandelier Bar is located on the lower levels of the building and includes a namesake custom chandelier with 15,000 crystals in it.
Miss River is on the lobby level and offers signature dishes including whole carved buttermilk fried chicken; dirty rice with seared duck breast, duck egg yolk and scallions; Louisiana oyster patty with flaky puff pastry, caramelised shiitake mushrooms and citrus zest; and salt-crusted Gulf red snapper.

Infrastructure bill clears major hurdle in the Senate, Senator Cassidy assists with negotiations

Sen. Bill Cassidy-LA (R)
the Senate this week with Republican Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy assisting with negotiations on the bipartisan bill. In addition to supplemental spending, the infrastructure bill would fund more than $6 billion for Louisiana’s roads and highways.
“And so, it’s not just $6-billion it’s $6-billion on top of that, that which we would otherwise receive. And so, there’s a lot of pent-up demand in Louisiana for roads and bridges. This helps address that pent-up demand,” said Cassidy.
Cassidy said the state has more than 16,000 bridges and over 3,400 miles of highway in poor condition. The bill will authorize $6 billion in highway funding for Louisiana over five years.

The Return Of Live Music: 10 Classical Music Festivals To Attend This Summer

Classical-music devotees who’ve been missing the sound of live music and the camaraderie of intermissions can begin to breathe a sigh of relief as the pandemic, at least around these parts, begins to wind down. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has just announced that Symphony Hall will reopen Sept. 30 with celebrity violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter playing the new John Williams Violin Concerto No. 2 (if you can’t wait, you can attend the world premiere at Tanglewood, July 24). This summer, many plans are already in place for live concerts, mainly in the open or semi-open air. Some programs, such as all the concerts at the legendary Marlboro Music Festival, are already sold out. Here’s my list of the live events that I’m aware of so far, including some I’m especially happy to encourage you to attend. Keep on the lookout for others.

A Tale of Two Deltas

A Tale of Two Deltas
That blood-red full moon of July looked for sure to be on fire, but only because we saw it through smoke that had drifted thousands of miles east across North America. We’re sorting through glimpses of an apocalypse this hour, reaching for the eerie, uncanny feel of this climate summer of ’21: oceanic flooding in German cities, and now inland China, too. Our listening post is New Orleans, favorite American river town and all-important port that’s dissolving as we speak, same time it’s caught in the jaws of a rebounding pandemic. Louisiana this summer has the highest per capita increase in COVID cases and the third lowest vaccine rate in the country.  It’s embattled but not quite hopeless, knowing it’s alive because it’s scared half to death.

Thunder Select Australian Josh Giddey With Sixth Overall Pick, Execute Trade In 2021 NBA Draft

By: Nate Kotisso
OKLAHOMA CITY -
In an early draft surprise, the Oklahoma City Thunder selected Australian guard Josh Giddey with the franchise’s first NBA Draft lottery pick in five years.
Giddey, who is 18 years old and hails from Melbourne, is OKC’s first lottery pick since the Thunder chose Domantas Sabonis with the 11th pick in 2016.
He is also the first graduate of Australia's NBA Academy selected in the NBA Draft.
Giddey played for a mediocre Adelaide 36ers club in 2020-21 (according to Basketball Reference, the 36ers finished 13-23), but he posted some impressive numbers in his age-18 season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards for three players and the rights to first-round pick Isaiah Jackson.
According to two people with knowledge of the deal, the Lakers are trading Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell to Washington for Westbrook, who is a Los Angeles native and helped lead UCLA to a pair of Final Four appearances. The Lakers had the 22nd overall pick in Thursday's draft and selected Jackson, a 6-foot-11 forward from Kentucky.

The fascinating history of package holidays in the UK

A very British love affair: The Victorians invented them. Now, our affection for package holidays is enjoying a glorious resurgence
Thomas Cook was the pioneer of package tourism in the UK after having the idea to arrange a tour in 1841
The Baptist missionary took 500 people 11 miles from Leicester to Loughborough for a teetotal rally
Uncertainty caused by the pandemic has turned people back to package holidays
The plus side of package trips is that they provide financial protection and refunds by law

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal can't be officially announced until Aug. 6, when the salary cap becomes official and teams can also begin making moves for the upcoming season. The Lakers will also receive second-round picks from the Wizards in 2024 and '28.
