Reporting from washington, im jane obrien. President trump says it was a lovefest, but after a public party feud, republicans want the verbal attacks to stop. I think it is not helpful for our party to have this food fight in front of everybody. Jane a rerun of kenyas president ial election will go ahead tomorrow, but the Opposition Leader is encouraging supporters not to vote. Aint that a shame jane and his sound helped create rock n roll. We look back on the career of fats domino, who has died at the age of 89. Jane welcome to our viewers on Public Television and america and around the globe. Republicaner 2 senators let loose on President Trump, he is stressing party unity and a warm welcome from lawmakers. On twitter, he dismissed the unprecedented criticism from senators jeff flake and bob corker, saying they decided not to seek reelection because they have zero chance of winning. But by this afternoon, he turned his fire on democrats and described yesterdays lunch with republicans in glowing terms. President trump i call it a love fest. It was almost a lovefest. Maybe it was a lovefest. Standing ovation. There is great unity. I mean, if you look at the democrats with Bernie Sanders and hillary clinton, that is a mess. There is great unity in the Republican Party. Jane for more, i spoke a short time ago to reid wilson, National Correspondent with the hill. Lovefest, that is an i started by asking why we are not seeing more join jeff flake and bob corker in their criticism. Reid the Republican Party has control in washington, d. C. , and they have an agenda they want to get through. None of their agenda has moved to even a debate phase. The Health Care Repeal has failed. Tax reform is getting off to a rocky start with the president and Congressional Republicans apparently on different pages on a number of key aspects. Something like the infrastructure bill is not even in the conversation right now. Republicans need a working relationship with the president. They may not have one now, but they will not be the ones to make it worse. Jane i think what is interesting about all this, though, is that jeff flake not that long ago was the cool conservative of the party. How has he fallen from grace so quickly . Reid the simple answer is he picked a fight with donald trump. Jeff flake got to washington as the first of a new wave of really fiscally conservative, regarding the pursestrings republicans. He came to office in 2000, years before the tea party swept in. But now he said yesterday it is not just enough to be conservative, you have to be angry about it, too, and that is very much not who jeff flake is. He is a very sunny, optimistic guy with his own vision for the future of the country that probably aligns with a lot of these more angry conservatives. He is not angry about it. He thinks the president has acted inappropriately and said inappropriate things, and has said something about it. The fact that that has cost him in these polls and his own base voters in arizona tells me that this is no longer the party of the tea party or the party of fiscal conservatism, it is the party of donald trump. Jane this division was started really several years ago. Who do you think is going to ultimately win the soul of the Republican Party . Reid well, people like bob corker, a very serious fiscal conservative, and jeff flake, a traditional, almost libertarian conservative, they are on their way out. If they are replaced by republicans, they are replaced by people who win these and it isprimaries, clear that the primary republican voter right now is a big fan of donald trump and is probably looking for somebody not just to advance his agenda, but to be more temperamentally like President Trump. Jane you mentioned the impact on the legislative agenda. But where is this all going to go . Will there be ultimately the lovefest, the unity that donald trump wants . Reid if they can get to the end of what is going to be a very hard process. We have not had significant tax reform in this country since 1986. That is not an accident, it is not that people forgot about it. It is very hard to do. Even when they are talking about some of the payfors, like a 401 k limit to how much you can contribute, that is very unpopular, and trump will have to do something unpopular to get that through. We will see if they get on the same page. Jane reid wilson, thank you for joining me. So how are republican lawmakers feeling about all this . Adam kinzinger, congressman from illinois, gave his take to my colleagues katty kay and Christian Fraser on their Program Beyond 100 days. Katty congressman, you have been critical of donald trump on occasion. Im wondering what you made of senator flakes comments in the senate yesterday. Rep. Kinzinger well, he is a very principled person, and i think he meant everything he said. I think it is not helpful for our party to have this big food fight in front of everybody, and it happens on all sides. The president with his twitter, and the comments from the senate. We have big things we want to achieve, big things internationally, and as a republican, to wake up every day and see this spread all over the national and world media is a little disheartening sometimes. But you know, look, everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I will be supportive of the president anyway i can, and i will make comments critical. That is my job in congress. Katty lets talk international. You served in the u. S. Air force in iraq and afghanistan. If you were back in service now, you would be concerned that this disagreement in the party was hampering americas ability to do its job around the world . Rep. Kinzinger well, maybe a little concerned, because anytime you have fights in the party or country, especially when it comes to Foreign Policy issues, it can be a little hamstringing katty what do you mean by that specifically . Rep. Kinzinger well, for instance, the president makes a decision overseas, and it used to be that none of that was partisan. It used to be that politics ended at the waters edge, and now it turns into an internal debate at home. Let me say this the american military, and i served with the British Military in iraq they are really tough people. They have one mission, to take out the bad guys. If the military if the civilian leadership of america or the u. K. Asked them to do it. And they are really good at it. A lot of times these debates can be a little disheartening, but the military goes way beyond and is way bigger than political disputes. We like to discuss microsofts sometimes some political discuss amongst ourselves sometimes some of political differences, but we are good at what we do overseas. Christian congressman, when you are in the military, what is important is the temperament of your leaders. What senator flake was talking about yesterday is that he does not think this president has the temperament. Do you . Rep. Kinzinger you know, that is a tough question to answer and i will not get in the middle of their food fight. I dont like some of the things he puts on twitter. Every morning you wake up and you kind of cringe on some of the things as you log into twitter that he puts. I think some of the tweets on International Issues can be beneficial, though. Look at north korea. You have reports that kim jongun has reached out unsuccessfully to republican consultants to say, what is donald trump made of, because he is showing unpredictability. There could be benefits. There but yeah, the american presidency has always been bigger than moments and bigger than partisan debates, even though they engage in partisan debate, and that is something i worry about. Christian but it is important what World Leaders are thinking, and when they look at his tweets today, like where he says yesterday i got a standing ovation, there was a lovefest, that is the sort of language we are used to hearing from colonel qaddafi or kim jongun, not the president of the united states. Rep. Kinzinger yeah. I mean, look, like i said, when i read that twitter, it is kind of like, why . Please dont. At the same time, World Leaders, interesting leaders, colorful leaders in the past, like in europe, for instance, and you see that and you say, well. The relationships with countries go beyond what leaders say. Now it can be damaging, but we , always have a relationship that goes beyond it. Look, the president there is a lot of things internationally i agree with in principle. The tone i dont. Frankly, we are lucky because we have a lot of great people around him, and he tends to allow them to help him and make decisions when it comes to things like what to do in syria, what to do with iran, etc. Katty adam kinzinger, thank you for joining us. Rep. Kinzinger yeah, anytime, see you. Jane the u. S. Has expressed over efforts by both parties in kenya to undermine electoral independence. Opposition leader raila odinga is urging his supporters not to participate in the president ial election tomorrow. Kenyatta won the vote in august, but that result was nulled by the Supreme Court. Our africa editor fergal keane reports. Party the president s turned to god, a prayer meeting near the Supreme Court, hoping that the judges will hear their plea. In a country where many institutions have been undermined by decades of corruption, the Supreme Court is seen as an honest and fearless arbiter. But today, as lawyers waited, the extraordinary news that too few judges turned up to hear the crucial case. This matter cannot therefore be heard at this morning. It is accordingly adjourned. To a date to be taken in the registry. Once again, my apologies to our all of you. Thank you. Fergal among those who didnt come was the deputy chief justice. Her bodyguard was shot and wounded last night. What happened to the deputy chief justice yesterday was not an accident, as it were. It was a deliberate move to intimidate her. To make sure that she does not turn up for these proceedings. Fergal this process has produced many controversial moments, but the failure of an enough judges to turn up this morning to decide on the case is a significant blow to those who put their faith in kenyas institutions to deliver democratic accountability. Government supporters listening to the news were delighted. A mile away, Opposition Leader raila odinga was being treated like a conquering hero. He called on supporters to become a resistance movement, and oppose what he calls a dictatorship. What should we do tomorrow . He asked them. No elections, they shouted. But the polling boxes are being delivered, and tonight, president kenyatta pledged to and president kenyatta pledged to enforce security laws. President kenyatta to step aside them is to step into anarchy, and as president of this great republic, sworn to defend constitutional order, i will not let that happen. Fergal it is a promise that will be hard to keep in Opposition Strongholds like this, where children run the gauntlet between demonstrators and police. Fergal keane, bbc news, kenya. Jane other news now the bbc has accused iran of waging a sustained campaign of harassment and persecution against the staff and families of its persian service. Iranian authorities initiated a criminal investigation into 152 bbc persian staff, former staff, and contributors. Iran claims a conspiracy against national security, and has frozen the assets of bbc personnel. Iraqs autonomous kurdistan region has offered to freeze the results of the referendum on independence and begin dialogue with baghdad. The move to break away resulted in iraqi troops seizing areas controlled by the kurds since 2014, including the disputed city of kirkuk. President trump has called to congratulate his chinese counterpart, xi jinping, for his reelection as communist party leader. Chinas president and his party tightened their grip on the country following a weeklong National Corn costs national congress. Johns ft. John sudworth has been granted a rare interview with the chinese human rights lawyer. Reporter we enter through the basement, in an attempt to avoid the surveillance. There are few occupations more sensitive in china right now than that of a human rights lawyer. He is the first to dare to speak out about his ordeal. They withheld food. They didnt allow me to sleep. I was kept in a small room and saw no daylight for half a year. This is torture, and the isolation is more painful than being beaten. John president xi jinping has been tightening his already formidable grip on power, today revealing the men who will rule with him during his second term. If xi jinping is really now chinas most powerful leader since chairman mao, the plight of the human rights lawyers tells us something important about how he intends to use the growing authority. There was once a hope that as china grew richer, it would grow freer politically. Not anymore. This womans husband is one of the lawyers still in detention. She has heard nothing at all since he was taken away two years ago. I think it might be because he wont sign a concession, she says. However long he holds out, i will always support him. Any challenge is now viewed as a threat, not just citizens, but thats not just dissident not just dissidents, but the lawyers who represent them and the lawyers own families. Even when petitioning for justice, they are followed and filmed. After 18 months in detention, the risks has not gone away for this man and his family. He has been warned not to talk to the foreign media. I am taking a risk, but i think it is my responsibility to speak out. I cannot accept a society that arrests people for what they think and what they say. John our interview is suddenly interrupted. His wife tells us that a group of men has begun to gather outside the apartment. As we leave the same way we came in, we hear their voices. They are waiting for us and block our way. We are held here for an hour or so, and then allowed to go. Another short glimpse of the tightening social control under president xi. John sudworth, bbc news, beijing. Jane you are watching bbc world news america. Still to come, politics casts a wide net. South carolina wants its shrimping industry to thrive, but how to create that is causing division. Bangkok, thes of fiveday funeral of the late king is underway. The elaborate ceremony centers on the kings cremation on thursday. His son offered a prayer at the ceremony. Rupert wingfieldhayes has this report. this is what the center of bangkok looks like today, every Single Person dressed in black waiting for the last chance to say goodbye to their late king. Arenumbers of people here truly extraordinary. It must be in the hundreds of thousands. That building is where the ceremony will take place, and if you look on the other side of the street, these other people letting up, hoping to get closer , hoping to get a glance of the ceremony. This line stretches down the street for more than a kilometer. Over the last year, since the kings death, it is estimated that 12 million thais have come to bangkok to pay their respects. These people have little chance of seeing the actual ceremony, but it doesnt matter. They just want to be here. We have been here since the very early morning. Just a glimpse of the crematorium, and were happy. I love him so much. When i watch the news on tv now, i still cry. It is not just i want to be here. I must be here. We are his royal subjects. We are his children. Rupert the funeral ceremony will begin at the royal palace, which you cant actually see from here, and then there will be a fivehour position, where the funeral urn will be carried atop a huge wooden chariot and towed through the streets until it ends up here, the golden building behind me, and that is where the actual cremation will take place at 10 00 on thursday night. Jane it is no secret that opinions are divided on u. S. , andtrump in the that extends even to the shrimping industry. Many voted for mr. Trump hoping he would bring back jobs, but others worry about the impact of his environmental policy on the waters that fuel their livelihoods. We visited mount pleasant, South Carolina, to hear both sides. A lot of people got out of the industry because there is no money to put back into boats or make a living, really. Very few of us left. My grandfather was a fisherman, and my dad was one of the first shrimpers. I guess i started going out when i was like four years old. Most of it here, used to be 4 shrimp boats deep, three on this side. Now we have sailboats and yachts. Not something you want your son or daughter to get into now i like it used to be. From china and vietnam and farmraised shrimp have affected the market. They flood the market and you have these warehouses full of frozen shrimp. You know, i think donald trump is a businessman, and im a businessman, and i think he looks out for the businessmen. We are in the right direction stay local, buy local, keep america first. Lets unify the country. Lets stay with the program. I am not optimistic that trump can make the economy better. I know there are many people in South Carolina who disagree. The shrimp has been less abundant this year than they have in years past. When he degrades the environment, it will affect the shrimping community and are fishing community. Demolishing the protections that we as a country have spent so long to fulfill. We have seen through development a degradation of the marshes, the estuaries for shrimp, and that is not going to get better by loosening protection. We do not think that the Trump Administration is representative of us or our interests. Jane shrimpers of South Carolina there. Showing that wherever you are, you cannot escape the impact of politics in washington. Tonight we say goodbye to rock n roll legend fats domino, who died at the age of 89. The new orleans native rocketed to fame in the 1950s with hits such as Blueberry Hill and aint it a shame. In 1986, he was among the first inductees in the rock
