In zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe seen in public for the First Time Since the military takeover. How much longer can he hang on . And from sleeping on the street to providing solar power, one woman talks about her story of renewal and a bright new start. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and around the globe. After days of relative silence about a series of Sexual Misconduct scandals surrounding politicians in the United States, President Trump has taken to twitter to criticize democratic senator al franken, who has admitted groping a woman during the 2006 overseas comedy tour. In the tweet, mr. Trump, who referred to the minnesota senator as al frankenstein, said the picture is really bad and speaks a thousand words. Frankens previous advocacy for womens rights. He has yet to publicly comment on the allegations against Republican Senate candidate roy moore, although his press secretary has. Earlier, mr. Moores wife spoke out in his defense. He is a loving father and grandfather. Most important, he is a christian. So let me set the record straight even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation, and now against my husband, he will not step down. [applause] and a short time ago, i spoke to jay newtonsmall, a journalist and author of broad influence how women are changing the way america works. Two different cases, ill franken and roy moore. President trump has been accused of hypocrisy in the way he has handled those. Jay absolutely. It is striking that he is making political hay out of the al franken accusations well not while he is not mentioned at royanything to do with moore, ahead of a pivotal vote in december. Moore hangs in the balance in alabama, not just as the man, but the seat itself, because the democrat is gaining ground over these allegations and the president s silence is deafening and he could have an impact on the race should he choose to weigh in. And at the thing he is more silent about that is astonishing is the fact that there are 16 women on the record accusing him of groping them, and of Sexual Misconduct, and people say it is you chicago see for him to say it is a huge hypocrisy for him to criticize al franken on the one hand and not really address his own accusers on the other. Rajini he has denied the allegations. The white house was asked about them today. How much do you think the conversation is changing when it comes to policy and allegations politics and allegations of Sexual Harassment . Jay the conversation is absolutely changing, and it is great to see, for example, moves on capitol hill to introduce legislation to require training in these circumstances. No one really knows how much good training can do, but at least it is something out there, something to set a bar, precedent, to say that he received training and should know better. Rajini what sort of training would that be, though . Jay well, a lot of training is what exactly is Sexual Harassment a lot of people dont realize that inadvertently you can be sexually harassing. For example, al franken said he had been joking around and he did not mean to sexually harass her, and she took it that way, and appropriately so. She was incredibly offended and hurt and scarred by this. If he understood earlier on when understood earlier on what it was like to be in a womans shoes and understand what it was like to be sexually harassed, perhaps he may not have done that. Rajini do you think if you look at the fact that despite the allegations made against President Trump a year ago, he still won white women votes in the election, and i just came back from alabama and met many women who were not bothered by the allegations against roy moore. Does it matter to voters . Jay it does matter to voters in the sense that if it happens to you and the setting of the cultural tone across the board, it is not just politics, it is media, hollywood, work environments across america where the discussion that is happening, and it is a very good discussion to have. It is a good culture to question, and it is only by openly talking about this and feeling safe enough to come out and address this and say, i have been harassed, i have had these problems, i need to feel ok i will not be persecuted or lose my job to say this, that you can really change the culture. Yes, i do think it is really important to have those conversations, even if it doesnt actually change anything at the ballot box. It does change everything having to do with the way people interact with each other and the way they treat each other. Rajini were seeing changes already. Jay newtonsmall, thanks for being with us. Jay thank you so much. Rajini veterans of the war against white rule in zimbabwe who have been Robert Mugabes ardent supporters for years say that he must step down at once. Today, mr. Mugabe appeared in public for the First Time Since the military takeover of zimbabwe. From there, africa editor fergal keane sent this report. Fergal here in harare, the sense of crisis is swelling. After a day of the surprising and surreal. It began with an appearance nobody expected. The aura is gone. Robert mugabe is a man reduced in stature and options. In this coup unlike any other coup, he emerged today to open a graduation ceremony. The voice that once preached revolution now reciting the mundane requirements of the moment. President mugabe by the Authority Vested in me, i declare this congregation of dulybwe open university constituted as a graduation ceremony. [applause] passing of any era, there are emblematic moments. Caught napping. It has happened a lot to him these days. The appearance demonstrated just how much Robert Mugabes world has shrunk. He was effectively allowed out on license by the army, briefly shown to the world, and taken away again. The fear with which he ruled his people, the patronage, the with which she bought loyal with which he bought loyalty, these are gone. But there is growing disquiet at the fact that he remains president. By lunchtime, the pressure was intensifying. These are war veterans, old allies now publicly calling on mr. Mugabe to go. , weetween now and tomorrow are giving a warning to mugabe, to his wife, and to anybody who still wants to be associated with him, that is finished, done. We wont allow [applause] fergal the workaday normality of the streets is surface deep. Expectations of real change are growing. It has been long overdue. We expecting to improve economically, socially, and politically. People should be free to choose who their leader is, should be. We just want to be at peace. We dont want war, we dont want civil war, we dont want anything to do with that. Fergal the military has a dilemma. Hence these photographs, smiles and handshakes. Under pressure from Regional Power and the international community, they need a transfer transition with a veneer of legality, ideally with mugabe agreeing to resign. So far he wont. That ambivalence has become the problem, the albatross around the military. Legal to play the constitution on one hand, and at the same time they want him out. Fergal but by early evening, it was apparent that most in his own party want him gone, and a majority of provincial branches called on him to resign. There is talk of impeachment. These moves could be decisive. Rajini our africa editor reporting from zimbabwe. Indonesia is the largest exporter of palm oil in the world. His doctors in south korea have displayed him, showing dozens of flesh colored parasites 27 centimeters long removed during a series of operations to save his life. In my over 20year career as a surgeon, ive only seen Something Like this in a textbook. Reporter so how could the parasites have taken hold . Experts believe diminishing supplies of chemical fertilizer have led north korean farmers to find a solution closer to home. They need fertilizer to continue farming. However, due to the lack of fertilizer, north koreans fertilize their fields with human excrement, and this becomes a cause of the parasitic infection. Reporter the World Food Program says a quarter of north korean Young Children who receive its help suffer from chronic malnutrition. The fact carefully vetted border guard is in such condition shows this sheer scale of deprivation the country is facing. Rajini tesla has unveiled its First Electric truck. Chief executive elon musk boasted that it will blow your mind clear out of your skull. The tesla semis claim to travel 400 miles after half an hours charging. But with the firm struggling to meet demand of existing models, some analysts are asking if tesla is promising more than it can deliver. In loshe launch angeles, this report. Reporter by bringing some of its trademark speed and style to trucking, tesla thinks they can unseat diesel as king of the road. The thing looks like it is not moving [laughter] is a diesel truck. Reporter elon musk has promised it will be able to travel up to 500 miles on a single charge, and when dragging the heaviest trailer allowed on american roads, it will still accelerate to 60 miles an hour in just 20 seconds. He wouldnt say how much the vehicle will cost, but argues that when fuel and maintenance are factored in, it will be cheaper and more efficient than diesel, claims that were met with considerable skepticism by some. It is really a very much economicsdriven kind of industry, and diesel is combination ofat features of being fuel efficient, reliable, and durable. Reporter tesla is not the first to unveil an electric lorry. Here is an effort from a u. S. Truck builder, although its range is only 100 miles. For theatrics, elon musk had a secret in the back of one of his trailers, a surprise new roadster capable of doing north of 60 in less than two seconds. What is your First Impression . No way. It is just nuts. He said it, it is stupid cool. It is just stupid awesome. Reporter but there is a cloud hanging over tesla that has investors worried. Right now it is unable to deliver cars quickly enough to meet preorders, for the more affordable model three, a car it unveiled in 2016. Mr. Musk said he was going to through production hell and was camping on the roof of his battery factory to save time. The astronomical value of tesla relies very much on this cult of elon musk, a strong belief that he is on course to change the world. But hes running out of time to start producing results. Rajini a brief chemical i spoke with david shepherdson, who covers the the Auto Industry for reuters. A theatrical launch for this electric truck, but how viable are electric trucks . In the longterm there is a viability. There are concerns about pollution in major cities. But diesel, traditional trucks, do have a lot of advantages, and there are key questions about what the tesla truck will be able to do, how big is the battery pack, how much cargo can the truck carry. It is an intriguing idea, but a lot of questions to be answered. Rajini why do you think elon musk has decided to get into this market . David it is part of his ethos of being in the world. He strongly believes in electric vehicle technology, and believes the company can move aside traditional incumbents. Stock prices of other companies were down 4 , 5 . Wall street is worried and they have put a lot of faith in tesla, because it is the second most valuable auto company, although, as the piece set them said, they are burning through a lot of money and cannot meet demand for the model three. This is part of a broadbased strategy. He has a big factory pumping out eventually lots and lots of batteries, and he wants to put those in a lot of vehicles trucks, cars, sedans. Rajini do you think it will fly with haulers who drive these trucks . David i think in the shortterm, there is question about that. The performance is there and the electric vehicles have faster acceleration. But another report said that automated trucks could eliminate 300,000 jobs or more, and there are 3 Million People in the United States involved in trucking and other delivery jobs. That is the longterm play, the vehicles that tesla and other companies are spending a lot of time on Automated Vehicles and ultimately we may not need drivers. You need one driver to pilot a platoon of 10 or 20 trucks. This is about getting drivers out of the seat. Rajini talking about flash launches, we saw that car in that report, costing Something Like a quarter of a million dollars. That is the latest sedan that elon musk has launched. How successful is that likely to be . David one thing is he is going to be able to raise money and deposits for those vehicles and use that money to defray some of the costs, because they were analysts out today who think that tesla will have to go to the Capital Markets and issued more stock or issue more bonds. He will need more money. He is burning through at least a billion dollars a quarter in automotive expenses. This is a very complicated series of things between the roadster, the family hauler, the semitruck, not to mention building tunnels under the ground, all his very ambitious efforts. It is going to be expensive, but if he can finally get mass production and get the model three out and running, that will a lot of naysayers will be satisfied. Rajini we will find out whether he will deliver on his promises. David shepherdson, good to have you with us. David thank you. Rajini now to another perspective on powering the future. Solar energy is one of the leading creators of jobs in the new jobs in the u. S. , and for sharon, installing the panels has given her a fresh start. She once lived under a bridge, but now she is soaring to new heights. My whole life has gone full circle. The sun has revolved around me and brought me back to a point where now im helping the sun give somebody else some sun. Omg living under the bridge, and now being on top of the roof, it is like a new kind of high. Im high, but im not high, you know . Therefore i dont think i can get higher than i am now. My mother, by the time she was 22, she had five children. By the time i was 18, i had two children. And i was homeless on the streets and living under a bridge. Living under there, i remember where i would have to make the bed out of things whenever i found or i had to make it a loo out of whatever i find and put a little curtain up there or something out of a jacket. I think it did something to my ing. About repurpos if i can repurpose things under that bridge, how come i cant be repurposed . Feeling in the zone, especially when this team is working together and synchronizing, putting stuff up on the roof, people call it it is like a symphony. One person is strapping the panels on, someone elses grabbing it. And you are just sitting there, like, i had something to do with this. What my cohort is like in class, it is mixed. There are people like myself who never thought they would be in green energy, and now they dont want to do anything else. I look at the design aspect of it, and where the panels should go on the flat roof that looks like a blank canvas to me. I want to break past some of the things tied to my past, tied to my feeling defeated in my life
