Senator corker i hope that when he speaks tomorrow he does so in a manner to reestablish or at least build back some of the trust that our nation has had. Jane the United Nations warns that 1. 5 Million People on the brink of famine in south sudan. And it is art fit for a king. This collection belonged to charles i, who famously lost his head. Now his masterpieces are finding a new audience. Jane welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and around the globe. Donald trump spent his first day in davos with plenty on his agenda. First he met with british Prime Minister theresa may and protected predicted a tremendous increase in trade between the two countries. Then in discussions with israels benjamin netanyahu, he threatened to withhold aid from the palestinians if they did not pursue peace with israel. So how is the America First message being received . From davos, jon sopel reports. Jon in a blur of rotor blades, a swirl of snow, and a near avalanche of expectation, donald into davos today. Not his natural environment. President trump very excited to be here. The United States is doing very well. Jon he came with a message. He had come to spread peace and prosperity. This is not exactly daniel into the lions den. Tonald trump and the davos se are not exactly soulmates. Nevertheless, the World Economic forum has come to a virtual standstill. Mr. President , are you looking forward to your meeting with theresa may . After their spat over the antimuslim britain first videos and the canceled trip to london, they were falling over themselves to be nice. Problems in the relationship . A false rumor, said the president. President trump it is an honor to be here with theresa may. We had a great discussion, we are on the same wavelength in every respect. The Prime Minister and myself had a really great relationship, although some people dont necessarily believe that, but i can tell you, its true. I have tremendous respect for the Prime Minister and the job she is doing. Jon and the Prime Minister beamed. Prime minister may we continue to have that really special relationship between the u. K. And the United States because we face the same challenges across the world, and as you say, we are working together to meet those challenges. Jon downing street has confirmed that officials are now finalizing arrangements for a working visit to the u. K. By donald trump that would take place later this year, although no mention of the invitation for a state visit that theresa may extended a year ago. This evening, the president had dinner with European Business leaders, some more important to mr. Trump personally than others. The makers of aspirin. I think you take it as well. President trump i do. [laughter] generally, imp should say only one aspirin a day. So far it is working. Jon the purpose of the trip to davos, to sell america. President trump when i decided to come to davos, i thought in terms of lots of people who want to invest, lots of money, coming back to the United States, coming back to america, and i thought of it much more in those terms. Jon tomorrow comes the keynote address, the protectionist among the free traders, the America First president amid the globalists. It might not be a meeting of minds. But say it quietly, donald trump seems to be enjoying himself. Jon sopel, bbc news, davos. Jane also in davos is republican senator bob corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations committee. He has had some infamous spats with the white house, but my colleague katty kay asked if he this donald trump has done a good job on the world stage. Senator corker from the beginning ive criticized things that i thought need to be criticized but i have also applauded those things that need to be applauded. Again, you and i were talking before we came on here, the Economic Situation around the world is different than people thought at this time. What he has done in the country is release the animal spirits. I dont think theres any question that with the dereg and tax reform, it is not only affecting us, it is affecting other countries that trade with us, which is most of them. So i think, again, support those things that you think are good for the country and the world , and sometimes some of the comments i wish were made in a different way. Katty right, but all the things you deal with from the National Security point of view, whether it is north korea or the middle east or russia or china, all of those insecurities still exist in the world. You accused the president of inching the world towards world war iii. Has that gone away now . Senator corker it seems to me that we are moderating some of our policies and understanding what our role in the world is, and we will continue to press for that. Again, i think when you have this incredible growth taking place, you should applaud that. And yet you are right, we have these intractable issues. Ive been on panels this week relative to russia, relative to china. We have tremendous issues to do with in the nation. Katty lets talk about china and north korea, because the president came here and announced sanctions tariffs on some south korean products. Is this a wise time to be doing things that might alienate a key ally when it comes to dealing with north korea . Senator corker well, at one point they were looking at moving out of the south korean trade agreement. I think what has happened has ended up being far smaller than people expected it to be. Katty but why do anything to alienate south korea at this particular juncture when things are so fragile with north korea . Senator corker again, he has followed through on the things he said he would do, but in a manner not nearly as punishing as people had once thought. Again, im glad at that. The pushback against the solar panels was not as bad as it couldve been. Look, i think he is demonstrating or at least attempting to demonstrate that he will push back on inequalities in trade. But at the same time, we have not seen the things that concern many people here, doing away in just wanton doing away with trade agreements. Katty the other issue i hear concern about from europeans and im sure you hear it when you speak to europeans, too, is the issue of iran, and the sense of unpredictability about the administration. We lurch from deadline to deadline, and it is only 24 hours before the next deadline that we know what the white house is going to do with recertified the iran deal or continuing to waiver on sanctions. Does that lack of clarity hamper the longterm future of the Iranian Nuclear deal . Senator corker the concern that people have about what he is actually going to do has stimulated discussions that otherwise would not have taken place if they knew he was not going to do anything relative, to the agreement, he was going to leave it in place, we were not be having the conversations we are having. On the other hand, no doubt u. S. You have seen the trust factor around the world and peoples view of the United States, no doubt many of the statements, some of the actions , many of the actions, have caused people to wonder whether we are reliable ally, a reliable friend. I hope when he comes and speaks tomorrow that he does so in a manner to reestablish or at least build back some of the trust that our nation has had. Katty the most critical thing you said about the president was a tweet you sent in october calling the white house and adult day care center, that it lacked adult supervision. Somebody had missed their shift. Do you stand by that tweet . Senator corker look, i say what is on my mind at the time, and i do so with thoughtfulness when i do it. I have moved on. We have continued to work with them. We work every day, actually, with the administration to try to make sure that good policies are put in place. I will say that the administration has a topnotch group of people involved in Foreign Policy that ive tremendous amounts of respect for, and we work with them nonstop to try to ensure that the policies put forth are good for our nation. Katty what about the president himself . Do you still believe he needs adult supervision . Senator corker well, the president is an unusual person in that all of the people that work around him really dont know what the outcome is going to be, the decision is going to be. And so they will work for months, sometimes it is weeks, to try to shape policy point, and you know, it is on the it is an unusual decision process that takes place, but it is where we are. Lets face it, on the economic piece, on the dereg piece, a lot of good things have happened as a result of it. Jane senator bob corker. Alking to katty kay in davos the United Nations is warning that 1. 5 Million People are on the brink of famine in south sudan with how the country half the country facing severe food shortages. Dozens of aid workers have been kidnapped in the last three months. The threeyearold peace deal is being ignored by government and rebel forces. Reporter troubled beginning for the worlds youngest nation. Tens of thousands have been killed. One in three here is displaced. And now they face the threat of famine. The youngest suffer more. Most. This is the face of starvation. She weighs half as much as she should at almost 2 years. She is now on lifesaving treatment, but her father worries that he wont be able to feed her well when they get discharged. Went you live like this, they cant even help you reporter jackson should be one of the better off south sudan is. She has a fulltime job and a farm. But years of civil war and inflation have left him destitute. There are many families like his. The doctor in charge here tells me this ward is always busy. Roughly how many children do you see in a month . In a month, around 80 or 90. Reporter right, and that is just in the capital, juba. This is a hospital that takes care of children outside the capital, and this ward takes care of severely malnourished children. In juba, 1 in 10 children are severely malnourished, but it is higher outside the capital, where life is way more difficult. It is harsh terrain, resulting and insecurity has resulted in the deaths of more aid workers than anywhere else in the world. They are forced to use air transport, particularly in rebelcontrolled areas. We are not heading in with much food, and the violence has meant that many of the farmers have fled their farms, and this will occur through july and when the next harvest comes in. This is a crucial time in south sudan. This is when we have to save the lives of the children. Reporter after decades of civil war, south sudan gained independence from its northern neighbor. But its troubles were far from over. Fighting broke out between supporters of president president salva kiir and the now exiled vice president. Deals have been struck and broken, sometimes in a matter of hours. There was a Peace Process it was violated as soon it was signed it was violated by the rebels. Reporter both the rebels and government are to blame no, because the rebels are like a spoiled child. They can do anything they want. Reporter with no end in sight to the finding, these people are at the mercy of donors, the youngest generation here suffers most. Jane lets have a quick look at the other news. Scientists have identified the remains of the earliest known modern humans to have left africa. A fossilized jawbone found in a cave in northern israel indicates that they left africa thousands of years earlier than previously thought. The discovery has upended modern theories of human evolution. Our science correspondent pallab ghosh has the details. Pallab in the distant past, the first of our kind evolved in africa. Our ancestors then left the continent and spread across the globe. When and how that happened is one of the biggest questions in human evolution. This fragment of a jawbone has shattered the current theory. It has rewritten the story of how we emerged on this planet. The jawbone was discovered along with stone tools in this case in northernave israel. The study, published in the journal science, shows it is around 200,000 years old, tens of thousands of years older than scientists thought modern humans who first left africa. I think the whole biological history of our species should be revised, because if we have humans in israel the last 250,000 years, it implies that the origin of our species going back in time not 300,000 years ago, but probably much earlier to around half a million years. Pallab theories about how modern humans first evolved and spread it may now have to be changed. The previous view was that our species began in africa 100,000 years ago. But the New Discovery in israel suggests it was much earlier, possibly 250,000 years ago. That means our species may have lived alongside other kinds of more primitive humans who lived outside of africa at the time, and that contact may have helped to shape our culture and the way we look. It changes really our understanding of interaction between other populations such as neanderthals. If we say that we have modern homo sapiens in our area, we have to reconsider all of our knowledge regarding the environment, the culture, and our interbreeding with other populations. Pallab the current view is that we evolved relatively recently, just as other types of human were dying out. But the new Study Suggests we are a more ancient species that shared the planet with primitive humans for tens of thousands of years. Pallab ghosh, bbc news. Jane you are watching bbc world news america. Still to come on tonights program, the signs of the chase. Research shows that speed isnt everything for predators and pursuing their prey. Smoking even just one cigarette and date leads to a much higher risk of developing serious diseases, according to new research. Evidence published in the british medical journal found that people were 50 more likely to develop Heart Disease and 30 more likely to have a stroke than nonsmokers. There is evidence that even cutting back significantly wont eliminate the risks from cigarettes. The bottom line, according to the study, is that there is no safe level of smoking. Heres our Health Reporter james gallagher. Smoking is awful for health as it greatly increases the risk of cancer, heart attack, and stroke. You might expect that cutting down from 20 to one a day would lead to a similar reduction in health problems. It does for lung cancer, but a study in the british medical journal say some risks remain high. For every 100 middleaged people who never smoked, five have heart attack or stroke each decade. 20 eight day have it increases the risk to 12 hundred accessed march. People who cut down drastically would still have 8 artifacts or stroke. A team at University College london says the solution is to stop completely. Smoking one or two a day still has a major risk of serious disorders. The implication is that when they deliver the Smoking Cessation services to patients, they can raise this information to encourage smokers in a positive way rather than cutting down. James the researchers suggest that low levels of smoke alter the way hearts and blood vessels function, leading to the increased risk. Cutting back is still better than doing nothing. But Public Health england said the safest thing to do is to quit for good. Jane the big cat pursuing its praise one of the most dramatic battles in nature. Scientists have analyzed in precise detail how predators captured the animals they hunt, and night is not all down to speed. They found some surprising results, as science correspondent victoria gill explains. Victoria the fastest land animal on earth. Cheetahs are built for speed and acceleration. With a sprint they can sustain for less than a minute, every twist and turn of the hunt is critical. A highspeed battle. These veterinary scientists have studied at the finest scale. We see the spectacle of hunting on wildlife documentaries. But here we are capturing thousands of runs and actually showing all the things we dont see when they hunt, and we can then create a computer model that can tell us what the outcome is. Victoria scientists fitted tracking collar to the cheetahs, lions, and the prey they pursue. Theyve recorded their position 200 times every second. That captures every moment of the chase, revealing just how closely predator and prey match. But it also demonstrated that the hunt is much more than about speed. By outmaneuvering the predator, turning at the very last minute, and antelope can control the chase and evade capture. Only 50 of cheetah hunts end in a kill. This research has unpacked that coevolution between predator and prey, the delicate balance of survival between the cats and the animals that they eat
