President trump coming under intense criticism over his response to the biggest wave of protests to angola america for decades. Protests have taken place in 75 u. S. Cities over the death of an unarmed africanamerican man, george floyd come in Police Custody. President trump has thatened to send in the military if protests are not controlled. In the past few hours, joe biden have these strong words for the president. The country is crying out for leadership, leadership that can unite us, leadership that can bring us together, leadership that can understand pain and grief in communities that have had a knee on their neck for a long time. Donald tru has turned this country into a battlefield driven by old resentments and fear. He thinks division helps him. In the last half hour, President Trump has tweeted what he believes are his credentials in supporting africanamericans. My admin has done more for africanamericans than any president since abraham lincoln, guaranteeing funding for hsbc use, poverty, and crime rates in history. He added the best is yet to come. The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful but a minority of protesters have clashed finally with Police Despite curfews put in place to limit the unrest. An officer was shot during protests in las vegas. Police said anotheras involved in a shooting in the same area. In st. Louis, four Police Office were shot there. Here is the citys police chief. They were standing near a line. All of a sudden, they felt pain. They didnt hear shots. To fire on people that were not doing anything, they were just standing there. Some coward fired shots on officers and now we hav four in the hospital. Thank god they are alive. He went on to break down in tears with anguish he was feeling at the time. Across the country, Business Owners are picking up the pieces after widespread vandalism. The owner of this store says they have lost everything. I feel for the protests, i am here for our people getting out there, on the people getting out there and getting their voices heard, but with the military being brought in to stop the looting, the looting has nothing to do with the protesters. Two different people. New york city has extended a citywide curfew for another night after a night of chaos. Crowds to find the curfews, the first curfew imposed in the city for more than 75 years. Looters broke into the Macys Department store and all merchandise. Other store windows were also smashed. Police made dozens of arrests. This is the aftermath, smashed window fronts and agree on the road. Some 8000 officers were deployed. New york city mayor bill de blasio has called for calm. We saw stopped last night that we will not accept. We can fight back, and we will fight back. I had confidence in the people of new york city, i have confidence in the leaders in communities, confidence in the nypd. Lets go to new york. Hearing those strong words, hardline tactics from President Trump about potentially deploying the army to deal with this. A lot of pushback from new york officials, not just the mayor, bill de blasio, but the governor, andrew cuomo. President trump all day has been tweeting the New York Knicks to call in the National Guard but officials here say that is not needed, not wise, not good to have outside forces come into the community. Already, the mayor had to address certain instances of Excessive Police use, but he said for the majoritof the police force, they are working with the community, standing, kneeling with protesters, and they want to make sure that with his curfew, they are starng earlier at 8 00, so they can distinguish who is out there remember george floyd and honoring his legacy, what he stands for in this protest movement, from those taking advantage of the situation. Behind me, you can see the vandalism and looting that took place. As i say, officials Standing Firm that the president s rhetoric is not helping, and they do not need the National Guard here. Stay with us. We want to bring our viewers uptodate on what happened earlier. President trump is facing backlash for visits to two religious landmarks. The president and the first lady visited john paul ii tried in washington. A day earlier, the president appeared at another religious side, outside st. Johns Episcopal Church, a short walk from the white house, and has been used by president for more than a century. It had been boarded up after protesters set fire to it the night before. As you can see, he posed for pictures holding a bible. He made the appearance after his first whithouse address on the nationwide protests where he warned he was repaired to bring in the military to quell the violence. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residence, then i will deploy the United States militarand quickly solve the problem for them. As his speech roundup, this was happening in lafayette square, which sits between the white house and the church. Military police and the National Guard used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash grenades to clear those protesters who were at the time peacefully protesting. Moments later, the streets were cleared for the president to walk to the church. Here is joe biden again. When Peaceful Protesters dispersed in order for a president , a president , from the doorstep of the peoples house, the white house, using tear gas and flash grenades in order to stage a photo op, a photo op, on one of the most Historic Churches in washington, d. C. , we can be forgiven for thinking the president is more interested in power than a principal, more interested in serving the passions of his base than the needs for the people in his care. For that is what the presidency is, the duty t care. Many religious leaders have expressed their shop. Washington archbishop wilton d. Gregory said, i find it baffling and reprehensible that any catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a way that violates our religious principles. The bishop who oversees st. Johns Episcopal Church told the Washington Post, i was not even given a Courtesy Call that they would be clearing the area with tear gas so that they could use one of our churches as a prop. We also heard strong claims from the bishop of central florida. There is no evidence for me that what he is doing in handling this crisis has anything to do with the teachings of the scripture, and therefore, to hold it up as if that somehow support his position, for me is blasphemous, because it contradicts the very thing that the scripture teaches. What are his supporters saying, and also the republican party, what have they made up his actions today . It is important to note, President Trumps approval for the haning of this situation was really low, especially among evangelicals. Many were saying, considering he was out of you for two days, portrayed friday night of going into an underground drunker bunker, that that bothered the president , did not portray the image of strength that he liked, many are saying that that is why he decided to come out with this photo op. We heard from several Top Republican senators who defended the president , who say he was just trying to maintain security and order, had every right to visit the church, which had seen some minor damage the night before. Really interesting to see republicans defending him. As you say, ny in the religious community saying, not just the photo op, b the way the violen and targeting protesters with tear gas on the way to get to therch to hold out that bible, also very troubling. A few blocks away, we can see the scene alive the prosts continuing, peacefully at the moment. Are you getting a sense of what the atmosphere is like out there, and how people are feeling afr a chaotic night last night . I have actually seen a few different peaceful protests throughout the city, one by the World Trade Center were they were praying, and singing peacefully come in with a Strong Police presence around the city, to maintain order. There was also a rally, several black leaders including reverend al sharpton, hakeem jeffries, ehouse representative in d. C. , they were speaking as well. Their message is this. If you are worried about crime corol and law and order, all youre interested is keeping the black community and their supporters quiet. But if you are truly concerned about peace, then its about talking about the way to go toward justice and accountability. That was their main message, that they will keep protesting, they will not stop, and they dont appreciate the president s conflagration with the Peaceful Protesters who they believe are committing violence, looting, who are separate from the protesters. Many people here making sure to go out on the streets and remember that th is a larger issue, not just about george floyd, but racial inequality in this country. Thanks very much. We should say, the mayor of new york, bill de blasio, has extended the nighttime curfew until next sunday, 8 00 p. M. Until 5 00 a. M. Lets go to the u. K. , where the Health Secretary matt hancock is being criticized by the head of the Statistics Authority over the way the government prevents takers on coronavirus testing. Today, he said the data is still far from complete and coppehas a blog, which is why it is not surprising that the statistics are so widely criticized and so often mistrusted. A drive in Testing Center today but with very little activity, as a new debate on precisely how many virus tests are being carried out has flared up. The Health Secretary, matt hancock come amid great play in the recent weeks about the plans to boost testing. I am setting the goal of 100,000 tests per day. Statistics Watchdog Group cast doubt over the number of tests that have actually been carried out. In his letter, david nor growth welcomes new data that adds, im afra the figures are still far from complete and current principal. The way the data are analyzed and present currently gives them limited value. The aim seems to show the largest number of possible of tests, even at the expense of understanding. The Health Secretary was challenged in the comments. The u. K. Statistics authority have written to him today saying that his figures are far from complete. The statistics fall well short of the standards in the code and it is not surprising that testing data is mistrusted. Mrs. Clinton. We will work with the u. K. , that Statistics Authority to make sure that we are happy with how we are publishing the data to make sure we get the data published in a reasonable and sensible way. The daily figures plished show tests for where the people currently have the virus. In one recent day, over 128,000 tests are provided. 27,000 were for nhs staff and patients. About 4004 people being tested at drivein centers. Nearly 44,000 test kits were sent out to not returned. Nearly 28,004 research and antibody tests, figure out if somebody already had the virus. The number of people tested currently is not being published. Officials say it will be restored soon. Some have delayed getting the results. They say do not call back for five days. I called back and they say seven days. Then it was nine days. I was hoping to get some confirmation or not, and i have not. Some mps have warned it will damage the travel industry. Publichealthngland has confirmed it is looking at test and tracing people are in the uks so that the quarantined may be gotten rid of in the future at some point even the government insists it is working hard to agree on these air bridges, agreements for countries where there is a low infection rate of covid19 so that people would not have to selfisolate for two weeks when arriving in the u. K. A significant number of those deals, the prevalence of the virus rate needs to continue to fall significantly. Spain has more that if it doesnt, british tourists simply will not be let in. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. The headline this hour, that the democratic president ial candidate, joe, says ameri is crying for leadership, with the country divided by racial tensions. One of the many deserving elements in americaas been the repeated attacks on journalists by police. Ross atkins has been looking at this for us. One australian journalist has said it is becoming more dangerous to carry a camera on american streets than a gun. She was responding to the latest attack othe press, right in front of the white house. This is the moment when an australian tv crew were finally moved off. Finally violently moved off. Another angle. The cameraman was shot in the face. The Prime Minister has asked australias embassy in washington to investigate. The u. S. Embassy in australia has tweeted, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting journalists. But not all american Police Officers seem to share that commitment. Here is the Washington Post detailing numerous attacks on journalists. Some estimate more than a hundred. This article quotes the executive director of the committee to protect journalists who says, i have never seen anything like this. Many of the norms have broken down. Linda is a freelance photojournalist. On friday, she was shot with a rubber bullet while covering the protests in minneapolis, and has lost the site in one of her eyes. I was lining up a shot and i caught a projectile from the direction of where the police were. Protesters came to my aid. They grabbed me and put me into their medic van, drove me to the hospital. I was in surgery within one hour. I have been permanently blinded my left eye. The bbc team was also targeted. A cameraman was working in washington earlier this week. Was before the curfew, and they were both easily idtifiable as press. This is wh happened. Meanwhile, t president has continued to tweet about the need to dominate on the streets, and has continued his attacks on the press, too. Ms. From sunday. The lame strm media is doing everything they can to promote anarchy. They are fake news and truly bad people with a sick agenda. We can easily work through them to greatness. Lets be clear, there is no suggestion the president has told police to protect journalists, but if you routinely demone a group of people from a position of power, history teaches us you can expect prejudi and hostility from others could follow. Whatever the reasons, the press is being impacted by police violence, and in many cases, the journalists are identified as press and are cooperating. It is not just journalists, but a woman was filming the National Guard and military Police Coming down the street in minneapolis. This happened. Get inside get in your house now light them up the reasons why the incidents are happening is hard to pin down so soon after they occur. Each circumstance varies, and it is too early to have everyones accounts. However, perhaps we were offered a clue in this vice news video. Ism press. I dont care. Get down. I am press, says michael adams. I dot care, comes the reply, and then the pepper spray. This video and many others are causing concern. The head of the un tweeted over the weekend, when journalists are attacked, society is attacked. No society can auction without press freedom. In the last week, various Police Forces have shown best indifference to the role of the press, at worst, something more sinister. And each incident places a further questionark around Ronald Reagans declaration that america is a beacon of the world. Many more stories on the bbc website, bbc. Com news.
