Judy President Trump is being taken to Walter Reed National military Medical Center in bethesda, maryland, tonight after testing positive for the coronavirus overnight. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh Mcenany said hes experiencing mild symptoms, and was being airlifted to the military hospital, she says, out of an abundance of caution. There are reports tonight that the president s symptoms include a low grade fever, fatigue, nasal congestion and cough. Mcenany said hes expected to stay at walter reed for several days, and will work from the hospitals president ial suite. Word of his positive test raised more questions than it answered, and brought much uncertainty to the state of the president ial campaign and beyond. Our White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor begins our coverage. Yamiche the Global Pandemic hitting home at the white house. President trump now infected with the very virus hes been fighting to contain, while at the same time downplaying. Today in a tweet at 12 54 a. M. , the president announced that both he and First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus. He wrote, we will begin our quarantine and Recovery Process immediately. In the meantime, the white house scrambled to do Contact Tracing and officials there expressed optimism. The chief of staff mark meadows. The American People can rest assured that we have a president that is not only on the job, will remain on the job, and im optimistic he will have a very quick and speedy recovery. He has mild symptoms. As we look at that, the doctor will continue to provide expertise. Yamiche and white House Press Secretary kaylieigh mcenany spoke on fox news this afternoon. Hes having mild symptoms, but hes feeling good, hes in good spirits. I spoke to him last night and he absolutely was hard at work. Yamiche but that revelation comes hours after news broke that hope hicks, a close trump advisor who traveled with the president this week, had the virus. That sparked immediate concern of exposure amongst the president s inner circle and washingtons top officials. This morning, Vice President pence and his wife karen announced they tested negative. Pences doctor said he does not need to quarantine. The health and Human Services secretary alex azar who testified before Congress Today on political interference in the u. S. s Covid Response also tested negative. But news broke this morning that Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Mcdaniel tested positive on wednesday. She was last with the president last friday. Meanwhile, the democratic president ial nominee former Vice President joe biden tested negative for the virus. He said in a tweet that he, quote, will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president. The president s infection upends an already unprecedented campaign. I dont wear a mask like him, everytime you see him hes got a mask. I put a mask on, you know, when i think i need it. Yamiche the president has long downplayed the virus and cast doubt on the necessity of social distancing and facial coverings. Its a little like a regular flu that we have flu shots for. And well essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner. Yamiche and back in march, he told Journalist Bob Woodward in a phone interview that he intentionally downplayed the virus severity. I wanted to always play i down. I still like playing it down because i dont want to create a panic. Yamiche at the president ial debate this week, he claimed his Large Campaign rallies arent risky events. Critics quickly pointed out that former gop president ial candidate herman cain died of coronavirus after attending one of the president s indr rallies in oklahoma. At a Charity Dinner before his positive test result last night, the president was optimistic that the pandemic would end soon. The end of the pandemic is in sight. Yamiche meanwhile, hospitalizations have hit their highest levels since may in at least nine states across the u. S. National cases have surpassed 7. 2 million. This morning, housspeaker nancy pelosi said she hopes President Trumps positive test result is a turning point for his attitude towds the virus. This is tragic, its very sad. But it also is something that again, going into crowds unmasked and all the rest, its sort of a brazen invitation for this to happen. Sad that it did, but im nonetheless hopeful that itll be a transition to a saner approach to what this virus is all about. Yamiche today, Global Markets quickly fumbd as news of his infection broke around the world. President trump is not the first head of state to test positive for the virus among them, the u. K. s Prime Minister boris johnson, and brazilian president jair bolsonaro. World leaders sent the president their well wishes. Russian president Vladimir Putin wrote in a memo that he is sending sincere support to President Trump. But some struck a more critical note. French government spokesman briel attal said the president s infection is a sign that the virus spares no one, including those who are the most skeptical about its reality and gravity. What more do we know about the president s health tonight . Yamiche stephanie, this is a remarkable moment and cannot be said enough that the president is dealing with a historic art of his presidency. The president is arguably the most attracted american in this country and could not attacked himself from the coronavirus. He could not protect the first lady or the white house. This is a president of the white house says has been moved to walter reed. White house officials continue to stress that he is experiencing mild symptoms. Though symptoms include nasal congestion, a lowgrade fever as well as fatigue. He says that he is feeling in good spirits. The white house doctor says that he has given him a treatment of a single infusion of an experimental antibody cocktail to help him with his symptoms. The white house doctor says that the president will continue to take vitamin d, zinc, and aspirin for how we got here and how this happened to President Trump. You have to look at the calendar of his events in his extensive travel leading up to this. We will put up this graphic. The president had more rallies since last thursday. There was a rally in jacksonville, florida area and there were rallies in virginia and pennsylvania. Last saturday, that is when you saw that rose garden eve where he announced that he was going to be nominating judge Amy Coney Barrett. Her nomination in a pretty packed crowd where a lot of people were not Wearing Masks, having in there myself. Then he traveled to cleveland, ohio, on tuesday. This is where things get pretty critical. The president , ang with his family, traveled to minnesota. Hope hicks was then diagnosed with the coronavirus on wednesday night. The next day, t president , knowing that hope hicks was diagnosed, he went to new jersey for fundraiser. Over thursday night, he was diagnosed himself with things sitting for the coronavirus. What this all means the president was traveling when he knew that he was in close contact with someone who had the virus. I pressed the white house to ask how the president made that decision and why it was seen as ok for him to make that trip. They said that the white house operations authorized the president to do that. Can the president keep working through this coronavirus issue that his having and infection that he is now fighting . The white house insists that he continues to be in command and there is no change in either in the u. S. Government. They say that they got the president will continue to work from walter reed. They are also saying that he is continuing to work at the white house. That means that his calendar was cleared all day. We are not sure with the president was doing other than talking to people. The Trump Campaign says that they are postponing all events Going Forward and any sort of event that might be happening well be virtual. That is his diagnosis and treatment going forwd tonight. Stephanie so many potential exposures from that calendar, so many people have reason to worry. But a lot of people have also pointed out [indiscernible] yamiche what we saw was that the president in the white house was not always adhering to the Health Guidelines for their own government. At the Trump Administration has a specific set of guidelines. They tell people to social distance, wash her hands, wear masks, but we saw at the white house was white house officials walking around, Holding Events and not having masks on. Tonight, the Security Council released a statement saying that their employees world be mandated will be mandated to wear masks. We saw the announcement of judge barrett as the president s nominee. I was at that event and i can tell you that i saw with my own two eyes that there were people not Wearing Masks, all standing close together. The president also had the convention on the lawn of the white house. There were there were hundreds of people not Wearing Masks. Critics of the president saying that this was the president not mirroring the behavior that would get the nation safely through the pandemic, and as a result, it was almost inevitable that he would and the white house would become a place where they would be spreading the virus to other people. Stephanie members of congress were in the vicinity of the president and tonight, we learned of another positive test. Yamiche what we have here is a number of members of congress that tested positive. You have mike lee, he was not wearing a mask. He was very close behind mike pence. Mike pence has tested positive. He was also at the white house on saturday. There are photos of him wearing a mask, but he met with judge barrett, mike lee, who is also quarantining. The soontobe Justice Barrett on tuesday. What you see as republican officials testing positive and also being in close proximity to the republican nominee for the supreme court. Stephanie so much to keep track of. The Vice President testing negative, but senator tom tillis of carolina testing positive and he is also a member of the judiciary committee, which is key as we all know. Yamiche alcindor with the latest, thank you. Yamiche thanks so much. Judy there are many other questions about the president s personal health, the duration of qurantine and whom else might have been exposed in recent days. Dr. Ashish jha is the dean of the Brown University school of Public Health and joins me now. Given what we have seen now, the president is about to leave white house to go to walter reed for several days you have heard i think what we have about the president s symptoms. What does that all add up for you . Dr. Jha thank you for having me on. This is very concerning for the president and the country. In terms of the president and his health, we do not have a lot of information. Do know we do know cute deceived an experimental therapy, but it seems like it is moving pretty quickly. He was diagnosed last night. He is heading to the hospital tonight. It concerns me. I do not want to overstate it. I do not have a lot of details, none of us do. But this is a concerning and i think worrying development. It feels like her than abundance of caution. But let us pray that he will turn around quickly. Judy worrying it because they went ahead and gave him this infusion of antibody cocktail . Worrying because of his age . Worrying because he is told we are told that he is overweight or his height . What makes you worry . Dr. Jha it is a bit of all those things. He is highrisk because of his age and weight. You do not know about his comorbid conditions. It feels like his clinical situation has gotten worse since yesterday did a typical course r someone with this virus may be several days before they start feeling worse. This feels like it is moving faster than usual. We do not know a lot here. I do not want to overstate we know what we now. He is the president of the United States and we have to have a height level of concerned heightened level of concern. Judy how much information are you getting . Dr. Jha this has been a challenge out of this white house. One of the reasons why it is so important for political leaders and the white house to build credibility with the American People is exactly for mormons like this. In a moment of crisis, we need to trust what is coming from there. We have not always gotten straight information. I am worried. My hope is that the white house does level with the American People, is transparent, and shares formation. But we will have to see what comes out of the white house in terms of what is going on. Judy i will just rept what i sa a moment ago talking to yamiche. The picture normally, they allow the press to take pictures, video of the president leaving the white house and getting onto the helicopter. So far this evening, they are not allowing that picture. We are continuing to watch to see if that changes. We know that the president has been traveling a lot. We just heard yamiche report on his schedule for the last two weeks, holding these rallies, very little mask wearing, very little social distancing, how much could all that have contributed . Dr. Jha yeah. There are two sets of issues in my mind. It is very clear that the white house has not been doing an adequate job of protecting the president and the results of that are now in front of us. The idea that people could go up and be next to him without wearing a mask, that people were not doing social distancing, all of those really put the president at risk. The fact that that was allowed and in some ways encouraged really strikes me as very problematic. Here we are. Now, the big challenge in front of us is to figure out who has been in contact with the president , the first lady, with miss hicks. In identifying who needs to be quarantined, tested, and given his schedule, we are probably talking about dozens, but more likely, hundreds of people. There is a very large effort in front of us in terms of tracking everybody down and figuring out what to do with them. Judy and what would you say about joe biden at this point . He was in michigan today. He flew there from delaware, he didnt event mikey was wearing a mask. He did an event, he was wearing a mask. Is it a good idea for him to be on the road even socially distanced and wearing a mask . Dr. Jha another concerning part of this do not know exactly when the president was infected, but it is reasonable to guess that the president was likely infectious on tuesday night during the night of the debate. Mr. Biden would not count as an official contact because they did not get within six feet, but they did share a stage for 90 minutes. Clearly, the Vice President is at some risk. It has been good to hear that he has been tested negative. He is going to continue to get elite tests. If he continues to get negative test into next week, i will feel better. But mr. Biden needs to be careful at this moment because he has been around somebody who was infected and infectious. Judy dr. Jha, thank you very much. I am told right now that there are video, pictures being permitted at the white house right now. For the press to see the president leaving the residence. I am told that he is walking to the helicopter. We will attempt to bring those pictures to our audience as soon as we have them. Think then you very much. Thank you very much. And for a look at how the president s diagnosis affects the executive branch and what it means for the countrys National Security, were joined by leon panetta. He served as the white house chief of staff to president clinton, then director of the cia and secretary of defense in the obama administration. What does this moment mean for the country . Leon it is a serious moment that i think raises a lot of National Security and occasions because this involves the president of the United States and whether or not he is able to fulfill the duties of the president. And in a very dangerous world with a number of crises that we are facing here at home and abroad, there are concerns about whether or not the United States of america can in fact provide the governing that is necsary in order for our democracy to be able to survive in this difficult moment. Judy why do you say that when the white house says everything is functioning normally . They have not transferred power to the Vice President yet, but they say that things are functioning. They are moving forward. What gives you concern . Leon the concern is that there are some important stuff that need to be taken here. First of all, is the president able to fulfill thduties of the president. And if he is now moved to the hospital, is he able to complete those duties . Is the chief of staff and Vice President in a position where they can implement their responsibilities . Secondly, are they presented to the public presenting to the public full information about the situation with the president . I think this is a particularly serious time on the public needs to know, what is the status of the president . And how are they dealing with the concerns that we have about his health . Thirdly, are they fulfilling the job of doing the business of the nation . The issues related to covid, stimulus, our economy, are they continuing to deal with those issues . All of that, i think, is in russian right now is in question right now. Judy is this a moment and i do not want to go beyond what we are all speculating at this point to what extent is this a concern that a foreign government, bad actor could take advantage of the situation . Leon we always have great concern about whether or not our adversaries are acting to undermine the strength of our democracy. We know with the russians are doing in terms of trying to undermine our election process. We know that china is doing the same thing. We know that iran and north korea have conducted those operations as well. So the uted states is at a very vulnerable moment. We talked about dealing with a pandemic, an economic recession, the situation and trying to make sure that we have an election process that is fair and that does not involve violence of some sort. All of these issues are at play right now. Adversaries now see a president who is ill from the pandemic. They are going to be tempted to take advantage of that situation, and that is why it is critical that our National Security team be on alert because this is a moment when our National Security is at risk. Judy what steps should the white house be taking right now to reassure the American People . Leon i think the mosimportant thing is for the Vice President or chief of staff to speak to the American People about the stepshey are taking to assure that this country is being governed and that the duties of the presidency are being fulfilled. A lot of questions right now, obviously about what is taking place, what ki of Health Problems does the president face . I think the key to trying to deal with the situation is an honest presentation to the American People about what is happening. Number one, where taking steps to make sure that the duties of the presidency is being fulfilled. Number two, being ver honest in presenting the situation to the American People that it is under control and that we are dealing with it. And rudely, we are going to continue to deal with the business of the nation. Thirdly, theyre going to continue to deal with the business of the nation. Stimulus bill, the covid crisis, Economic Issues within our country. Those are the collusive does not have to be sent to the American People those are the clear signals that have to be sent to the American People that the United States of america is still being governed. Judy how confident are you that this white house will be direct and will be transferring transparent on those points that you say are essential . Leon the record as we all know is not very good. There is an awful lot of distrust about what comes out of the white house in terms of the news and what they say and whether they are being fully honest with the American People about what is happening. There are questions about that. It does not mean that this cannot be a moment or someone in the white house steps forward and directly says this is the situation and we have the situation under control. And try to restore the trust with the people. Right now, that trust, not only in the white house, but in other institutions of our democracy, i think is at risk. For that reason, this is a moment where you have to restore that relationship with the American People so that our democracy has confidence that our institutions of government can function. Judy we thank you so much. Judy news of President Trumps coronavirus test was quickly followed by a jobs report that was weaker than expected, the last before election day. The u. S Unemployment Rate dropped to 7. 9 in september, and the economy added 661,000 jobs, the smallest monthly gain since may, leading to concerns about a slowing and deeply uneven recovery. So far, the economy has added back about half of the 22 million jobs lost after the pandemic first hit. But millions of people are struggling mightily and running out of federal assistance in some cases. Amna nawaz has more on all of that, but lets begin with some voices from around the country. My name is ben, im from indiana and i was a senior manufacturing engineer. Latonya darrisaw, new york, and i was a copywriter at a tech and entertainment company. My name is heather williams. I was an adjunct philosophy instructor and graduate assistant at the university of texas. My name is Sheila Richardson and i was a learning specialist. I lost my job because the company said that they did away with the position. It decreased my finances about 30 . So its a big gap. A major gap. The assumption was that, you know, we all would be brought back. Yeah. Once we got ahead of covid. But unfortunately, that didnt happen. My weekly amount that i get from unemployment now pretty much just covers my rent. We had a nice savings with a 401k, ira, savings accounts, whatever, i thought, you know, we were in pretty decent Middle America shape. But now theyre all just and you can just see it month by month. Just bum, bum, bum. Just going down. Ive had to cut back on my prescriptions. Ive had to reduce groceries or any sort of pleasures and groceries like ice cream unless its on sale. Maybe ill take all of my medicine today and some of my medicine tomorrow. Do i keep eating ramen even though im a heart patient . And i know its bad for me, but its all i can afford. Do i pay my electric bill or do i pay my rent . Those are the decisions that we have had to be making. I didnt plan for this. So, like, i dont know what, you know what the next steps are for me. And then again, just when the bills are piling up and you have rent due at the first of the month. Yeah. Its difficult. I had a healthy salary when i was laid off. A lot of people would prefer to start fresh with, like a recent college graduate, someone with maybe a year to three years experience. So thats another thats a kind of hit against me, i guess. Im a disabled person who has worked two jobs just to be able to make ends meet. And my partner works 60 hours a week and that is not enough to support us. There has been nothing that i applied a nth ago for benefits and ive received nothing. I graduated into the recession in 2008, so this feels exactly like that. And, you know, unfortunately, during that time it took me three years to find a job, and thats with a degree, with experience. I have enough savings to carry me through the end of the year. If i dont see that happening, then i will definitely, probably have to move back home. Its hard to even think about the long term when youre so focused on the right here. Right now, were focused on this week. Do we have groceries this week . Unemployment benefits for me run out in november. Thats literally in a month. It caused me to have depression, to feel very sad, very weighted down. And the outlook is, where do you go from here . For a closer look at the latest numbers, and to get a sense of who has been hit hardest by the recession, im joined by heather long of the washington post. Welcome back. We know recessions usually hit the most vulnerable among us the hardest. What does your analysis show about just how badly some communities have been hit . Were basically half recovered and thats good to see jobs coming back. What is really different about this crisis is of course the coronavirus and it has so deeply impacted lowwage workers. We can all see restaurants operating at half capacity, stores and bars closed. What we found is how deeply unequal it is. Lowwage workers are oppression like state they have been hit eight times harder than high wage workers. The recession is over for the top and the working class is still in a depression. If you look at it by race, black men and wen, their jobs have come back about 40 34 compared to whites who 60 back. Or americans with College Degrees for 55 back versus those who do not have College Degrees were more like the to be at service jobs, are only about 40 act. So it is deep disparities right now. When you look at age groups as well, take a look at this graphic here. It shows all the different employment by age group. Those top lines are americans age 25 and there. The bottom lines is americans between the ages of 20 and 24. How hard are they hit . Extremely hard. You can see those people trying to get those jobs often in restaurants d hotels. Those jobs were completely blown aw in the spring and have been slow to come back. The other group that has been a big scrap and see is moms versus dads. With schools closed and virtual classes, the burden is falling on mothers. Mothers with schoolage children are only 45 of jobs recovered versus dads of kids in school are 70 recovered. Massive difference there. In september, we saw a huge drop out. Over 800,000 women just their jobs entirely and left that is a very alarming sign. Heather, we cannot stress enough how much the disparity is apparent look across income levels, especially compared to recessions of last years, of 1990, 2001, 2008. The top line you see on the graph, the highest earning quarter for americans. Bottomline, the lowest earning americans. What does recovery look like for that . Wax i am extremely worried about that, especially if there is not or age soon. Not more aid soon. People are having to decide between buying prescription drugs and paying rent. I think that the woman that i talked to in louisiana who lost her job at a casino, i said what are you eating for dinner tonight . She opened her refrigerator and said, i only have one packet of lanes and one packet of lies and we do not have anything else. Packet of wings and thighs and we do not have anything else. We will return to the rest of the program after these headlines. In light of the president and other Health Lawmakers testing positive, the upcoming judiciary hearing to confirm Amy Coney Barrett may not take place entirely in person. Lindsey graham said tonight that any senator who wants to participate virtually will be allowed to do so. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer tweeted this evening that it would be responsible and dangerous to move forward with the hearing. Septembers news, the president pushed stocks lower on wall street. It closed below 27,683. The nasdaq the nasdaq fell 251 points. The s p 500 slipped 32. Firefighters in Northern California faced dry and windy conditions today as they battled a wildfire burning out of control in wine country. The socalled glass fire north of San Francisco has scorched nearly 600 buildings. 80,000 people are under evacuation orders, but officials said they expect Better Weather soon. Were looking forward to decreased winds, decreased temperatures, increased humidities, which will give our firefighters and boots on the ground a fighting chance to gain additional perimeter control, and start to bring some normalcy back to these impacted areas and get people back home where they belong. Wildfires burning in california this year have charred almost 4 million acres a new milestone in the states worst fire season on record. Hours of kentucky grand jury recordings in the case over the killing of Breonna Taylor were made public today. In the tapes, Louisville Police said they identified themselves before bursting into taylors apartment and fatally shooting her while serving a drug warrant. They said they returned fire after one officer was shot in the leg. Taylors boyfriend said he used his legal firearm because he did not hear them, and thought an intruder was breaking in. The jury did not charge the officers with taylors death. A federal judge in california has ordered the Trump Administration to continue collecting census data through the end of the month, as scheduled. The judge says it is meant to ensure that the most vulnerable and underrepresented communites will not be disadvantaged. It reversed mondays announcement from commerce secretary wilbur ross that the nations head count would end october 5th. The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on eight belarusian officials today for their roles in the countrys disputed president ial election and the violent crackdown on protests that followed. The move came after the European Union took similar measures this neither the u. S. Or the sea or the e. U. Guatemalas president today warned his country will detain and return members of a Migrant Caravan that set out from honduras in the hopes of reaching the u. S. He said the roughly 2,000 migrants were a health risk amid the ndemic. The caravan crossed into the country thursday, and rushed through the border without registering. One migrant died trying to climb onto a moving flatbed trailer. And, back in this country, newlyreleased audio recordings from 2018 show First Lady Melania Trump frustrated by w the media portrayed her response to the administrations family separation policy. The conversations were secretly taped by Stephanie Winston wolkoff, a former aide who wrote a book titled melania and me. In the audio released on cnn last night the first lady also aired frustrations about having to plan the White House Christmas decorations. They say im complicit. Im the same like him, i support him. I dont say ough i dont do enough. I say that im working on christmas and planning for the christmas and they said, oh, what about the children that they were separated . Give me a f break. I was trying get the kid reunited with the mo i didnt have a chance needs to go through the process and through the law. Trt 25] still to come on the newshour with woodrow with judy woodruff. We remember some of the lives lost in this pandemic. This is the pbs newshour from w eta studios in washington and in the west, the Walter Cronkite hool of journalism at Arizona State university. Judy the president has tested positive from the coronavirus. Two weeks ago, Justice Ginsburg was still alive. It is a lot to process. Thankfully, we have shields and brooks. Hello to both of you. A t has happened just in the last 24, 12 hours even. Your reaction to this fastoving news that the president not only tested positive, but he is up the walter reed hospital. I happened to be awake when he released tweet that he had been infected. I think the whole country was shocked and unnerved and saddened. People on the right were obviously. He is a man, he is our president. And we need him to be healthy. Just a few minutes ago on east coast time, the white house released a video of trump thanking people for the expression of support. They saw him walking to the helicopter on the way to walter reed and it is comforting to see him in recentlgood shape. And so, we are humans. This has been such an emotionally exhausting year. And the accumulation of Emotional Trauma is just one more episode. I was thinkg, it seems like it will never end. And i realized it is october 2. It is an emotionally gripping year. Judy it has been a whirlwind, the likes of which i dont think any of us have seen. We have been looking at this video of President Trump walking to the white house. Mark, before i come to you, we have that 18 second message that he tweeted a moment ago. I want to thank everyone for the tremendous support. I am going to walter reed hospital. I think im doing very well, but youre going to make sure that things work out. The first lady doing very well. I want to thank you very much. Thank you. Judy the president there speaking clearly. He looked like himself, but we are told that he is experiencing fatigue. Perhaps other symptoms, he has already received an infusion, a cocktail of antibodies. It is a moment, a sobering moment. Sobering moment indeed and it changes the Political Landscape of 2020. And i think that is the reality. Joe biden spoke for virtually all americans that the president and the first lady were in his thoughts and prayers. We cannot escape the reality of the politics. The coronavirus is the election issue of 2020. It always has been. And it now returns centerstage. It is exactly the issue that the president did not want. He does not want this issue to dominate our politics, and i do not think that there is any way that you skip that. Judy early, it is easy and early and we do not know the course of his treatment. How serious this case will be for him, but what does it look like could be the effect the campaign . There was some thought that thereould be some sympathy and people would rally behind him. I think that is possible, but probably unlikely. I think it is unlikely because he made such a point of doing behavior that was risky. It looks cavalier, and especially for a president it looks like not the best version of public service. I think that people will say, he just did not take this seriously. He was out there at the Amy Coney Barrett event and people were hugging each other and nobody was Wearing Masks and we saw tt throughout the year. We do not know how long the recovery will last. It also means that there probably will not be a second debate. It also means that covid is once again at the top of everybodys minds. Speaking in political terms, it is bad news for the Trump Campaign judy judy how do you see the effects on the campaign . Let us be very blunt. There is no donald Trump Campaign. Donald trump is the donald trump camp name. His tweets the donald Trump Campaign. His tweets, his rallies, has press comments. That is what has driven the narrative. His narrative has been, i have been a president of peace and prosperity, it was a government under his administration that the lowest Unemployment Rate in 51 years. Reaching out to better relations with north korea for a while. All of that has changed. It is a different campaign. He has tried changing the subject, whether it is fraudulent mail voting, or whatever the subject came to mind, as long as it was not coronavirus and coronavirus now essential and dominant and inescapable. Judy this comes a few days after the debate. Or, with assume we do n know if it will be more. A debate that he overwhelmed that tuesday evening. Did it have an effect on voters who still do not know what they are going to do on november 3 . It certainly did in my circles. Supporters were devastated and shocked. Some of them i thinkt was one of the most important events for the campaign on this reason for this reason. When you destroy every semblance of normality and indecency, you destroy the norms of standard behavior. When people like me sermonized about this, it is an invisible process, it is a slow corrosion. On debate night, the american about to see with their own eyes the way that a president destroyed an american institution, the president ial debate. That is a clear example of the centrality of character and decency and how what we saw when you have bad character and indecency, it has the explosive force of a howitzer. It breaks things and ask people suffer. Test test test test test test test vent. Judy how much harm do you think the debate did to the president s polical fortune . I thi it was obviously a missed opportunity. His opportunity was to try and make the referendum rather a choice between him and joe biden. He brought all the attention back to himself. He made a referendum on himself. He was interrupted by one count 120 times. He took an institution, which had been a remarkable civic institution, criticized by some for not being sparkly enough or whatever else, but it had been a remarkable moment where in every campaign, 90 minutes, both candidates stood there and defended and explained and answered questions and where how the held accountable. It was more than a travesty. It was a moment that brought all the attention back to himself. He mocked joe biden on wearing a mask, which seems sadly ironic and poignant at this time. I do not think that there is any question that the two major events of this campaign i do not know what will happen tomorrow, but really happened this week. They were the debate and the disease. And both of them and the final analysis, in each case, everyone of them by measurement of the wall street journal was personally liked. Donald trump is the only american president and a reelection who is personally unliked by most americans. There was nothing that he did on tuesday that made him more likable to americans who have the votes that he needs. Judy in that time, how is joe biden doing in this campaign . He has done a masterful job of holding his coalition together. Thought that his impromptu remarks were good, but his scripted remarks explaining health care were chaotic. I think he has done a very good job of not being a donald trump, but he needs to work on his performance, i would say. Judy and today his message to the country about the resident the president.
