KRON KRON 4 News At 8am July 13, 2024

Are threatened thats why theres so many evacuations and 124 structures have been burned to the ground that includes dozens of homes about 60 homes have been burned to the ground because of this fire that continues to advance whipped up by the winds when it started last wednesday, again whipped up by the winds day before yesterday yesterday got though a little break during the day like theyre getting today and thats some good news. Heres new video that shows you yesterday a chopper overhead surveying the area that was bert and you can see both sides of the road there theres fircrews on the ground that retardant you can see the color jones there where theyre dropping retardant were looking for more those air drops today that will be key in stopping the spread of the fire it looks like that home may have been damaged but not completely lost in the flames that surrounded it and many other homes,ot so lucky, they were completely destroyed. We have our crews out there this morning taking a look at the damage. And were also looking at the expanded map of people that have had to evacuate. James yeah, and that story what has changed here over last 24 hours the biggest change occurring in Sonoma County. Where yesterday the area in purple the mandatory evacuation zone extended all the way out to the coast. But thats not the case today. We have this large section closest to the coast now which is change color. Its now blue, which means its a mandatory watching warning not mandatory speech filter actually allowed to come back home but they ve to be ready to evacuate if the winds change and the fire continues to burn in their direction for w though the fire is continuing to burn to the south and also to the east in the south quartewere looking at the flames at one point getting really close to the town of windsor. There were a few hot spots reported in some of the surrounding neighborhoods. On saturday say kron 4 Sarah Stinson the driving around she is finding some homes that have been burned to the ground. Others that had fire coming right up to it. But luckily were saved by of the efforts of firefighters there so were stl monitoring the situation on that front. But on the Eastern Front heading into napa county we also have a new warning at least a new advisory to update you for napa county this upper left section here in blue. Thats now an evacuation advisory and includes the town of calistoga because the flames from time to time appeared to be marching in their direction so at least that alert has been put out theres an advisory in place which is 2 steps down from mandatory. So just be ready. What has been included in the warning category for evacuations is portions of lake county in fact a section that kind of spans right across the screen from this band in the county line with napa county all the way to the Sonoma County line. You have the town of middletown thats caps lead in that because we have flames now beginning to encroach into lake county and so they have an evacuation warning thats been implemented this morning which means you need to have the car pack you need to have an exit strategy planned because the flames appeared to be heang your direction and if the winds pick up like there threatened to do later today we could see embers flyi miles ahead of the actual fire and start to impact that community see may only have minutes noti to get out so need to get your affairs in order and get ready. You want to see what its like on that. And driving through a weve got video from a Fire Fighters fighting the kincade fire in this crew from inside th truck here headed there from San Francisco. 8 has come in from all over the country to the king cake there are more than 4,000 firefightrs working on the ground and this is what its like with fire burning on both sides smoky, dark flames right up against the strt here is the fire crews are trying to get to where they need to be in some cases called out to save structures are Sarah Stinson spotted one and a fire and s able to call the Fire Department they got their time to put it out will tran. Has driven a windy road to give us the best Vantage Point this morning from lake county looking down on the fire lets go to him now live this morning will. Dari among western mine road you can see that pickup truck behind me there are 3 people inside theres too distraught to talk right now, but they said that the fire is surrounding their home and they had to evacuat so you could see their car our way through the pickup truck parked to thside they get out are they walking along the ridge to see what we are seeing and what were showing you on the other side of the ridge then this is appears to be the same road. Look at that fire. Its been burning in the overnight hours about 10 minutes ago. I saw huge flames once again. The flames have been at least knock down for now we dont know why when down maybe needs new fuel to reach before it picks back up again, but you can see how smoky the conditions are from the right to the left of your screen and this is part of the kincade fire. This is the fear that they have and thatthey would spread to surrounding communities and cities and thats why the warning James Fletcher possibly being evacuated its t up on the hillside and middletown lake county took a beating last year when this place was on fire as well, so thre not even getting a break in the new year that area so remote that i would presume that they would only have to do air drops becau getting up and down this ridge was treacherous iare alive and james in the area. We will show you the road. Theres no pavement like a downtown street, its windy. There are a lot of potholes and i saw fire truck go through here a little bit earlier and they were going maybe about 10 miles an hour. So even getting to that location will be very difficult. The good news is this is a window of opportunity because the winds we have talked about it right. Look at the trees in the foreground you dont see is swaying back and fth so hopefully over the next several hours or so en they throw their for their full weight on it the Fire Department hopefully they will get a lot of work done before the winds pick up in fact we had a chae to track down a cal fire executive. Heres what he had to say about the firefighting efforts. What were seen as really heard the term it really is explosive fire growth. So we talk a traditional the front of the fire, the head of the fire that no longer exist with ese type of weather conditions we get what we call amber cast were an ember can the throne over a mile ahead of the main fire which unfortunately saw a lot of in the camp t devastating camp fire. In its start additional fires and then that had catches up and it becomes that mega fire so tactics and strategies change minute by minute hour by hour depending on weather conditions, but em. This is this is not the new normal this is the normal now for at least. Fire contions. Okay back live now so you can he details exactly ats going to looks like a little bit. The winds are taking up albeit slightly but we know its going to pick up a lot harder over the next several hours and even into the next couple of days and you can clearly see the wind pushing the smoke james and area from the right to the left of your screen so it is spreading in their worsfears are happening that it would take place in areas not touched by the fire just yet the 3 people i mention theyre back in their pickup truck. Theyre reversing right now so i may be they want to run back to their keep to beheir homes just to check it out, but they drove along this ridgeline so they cn get this great Vantage Point so they can see and thats exactly why we pulled over sust to show you a pass a remnant of you of the came kade fire which is still burning out of control and has been since last wednesday. James darya. All right, thanks a lot. Well continue to check back with you for that great Vantage Point we appreciate james all right, lets talk about those winds. In fact its going to have on everybody here in terms of power lost because its the winds that pg near really usinto gauge the decision on which communities to turn power off too are n some cases, youre still without power and looks like you may be without power for at least the next day or 2 as this wind event comes through. But heres the wider view and its the areas that are colored in that p gs most concerned about one thing i will mention is the east bays actually seen. Diminishing amount of area where the authorities are are focusing their concern most of it happens to be right behind oakland, so its in the Oakland Hills lake chabot down Castro Valley in the crow canyon. Area other than that the east bay looks like youre going to be all right until you get down to lets say son all and some of the hills there in the diablo range. South of san jose or find san jose proper looks okay peaches not too worried about that, but once you start coming around towards the peninsula. Its really the hills along the coast. Where the concern is greatest right now were not seeing too much worry in San Francisco looks like that county will once again escape any sort of Public Safety power shutoff the north bay though that its own story that weve got a lot of the wine country still in the target of pg e for these power shut off because of the active fire thats burning right now. And the fact that the winds appear to be the strongest in the north bay today into tomorrow and thats why some actually communities in the north they saw their power shut off even sooner. Then other portions of the bay. Heres a quick breakdown of the timing that pg e has for the power shut off that are expected to arrive later this afternoon, well put up that gphic on the screen for you. One thing all know is that were past the 7 oclochour which if you look at time periods. 4, 5, there on the leftide. We were expecting shut off power 7 this morning too Sonoma County lake countyapa and Solano County and then by later tonight around 11 00pm or so were going have time periods 7, 8, come on line theylbe more in santa c,ara santa cruz, san Mateo Alameda and contra costa counties, your power expected be shut off by 11 00pm but thats all dependent on the winds and thats what teaching is monitoring and so they could shift these times depending on how the weather develops so keep it tuned to kron 4 if their decision happens between our broadcast ll certainly let you know through our kron on app thats 24 7 new streaming service commercl free and for this crisis free to download weve removed a pay wall so go to your App Store Download it now thats our way to keep you updated throughout the day. Yesterday when the winds die down lot of bad air are. Round the bay area today another pretty bad air does look like those bad as yesterday this is real time numbers right realtime numbers youll see him updated from timeo time in as weve been talking about the darker the colors such as that to 52 up in the north bay, the worse your air quity is right now some of our areas that are actually seeing better air quality include the peninsula and the marine county, but all of us at least experiencing some sort of impact aria well consumer in county a much of that has no power and if there is powers going to be shut off again thats at least a bright spot. The fact that the air is not so bad that when you can see those bright red circles. Thats the worst air and yet we see them much closer to the fire and you saw a lot of this air quality just spreading out across or poor air quality spreing out across the bay yesterday as winds calm down. Thats the unfortunate thing would winds calm down. Often times youll see the smoke settling into the bay and we did have that impact you see some of our inland valley areas like that one 60 looks like possibly right around sandra bono right and right around to the north bay if you head up into the Sonoma County election see the worst of air quality as it shouldnt be a surprise right around the kincade fire will take the bad air because when the winds pick up. Yeah, that means the air cleans out but thats not what the Firefighters Want to see so when are we going to see the winds gusty again so winds should pick up on into the afternoon. Were actually already ba into red flag warning territory on this hazy start to the morning, theres your view from some know you can make o a little bit of that haze in the distance. Thats what you saw yesterda too. We already see a few areas where breezes have kicked back up into gear, including in sonoma callous toga and atlas peak areas but watch what happens post noon today thats when our winds really start to flare up by 04 00pm tonight 20 to 30 mile per hour gusts en regularly across the north bay 30 to 40 miles per evening. So will be mostly in the evening wind event thats when were going to see our peak wind gusts and peak wind top mountaintops could peek ouat around 65 Miles Per Hour winds also spread further south and to the east bay and on the peninsula. Why we do have all these Public Safety power shutoff going back into effect today and why red flag warnings will take effect across the bay area, not just for the north bay so asked winds picking up for you 22 mile per hour gusts right just about an hour ago you are looking at very calm wind so already seeing evidence of wind speeds on the rise. Theyll really kick into gear this afternoon leading us into the windit of conditions tonight and thats extreme fire danger spreads across the north bay red areas on this map indicating those areas where we do have the a potential of explosive fire growth as winds pick up and humidity remains very dry. So red flag warnings theyre back in effect now taking effect moments ago at 8 oclock the last until 04 00pm tomorrow. Wind advisories taking effect today at noon Cool Temperatures thisorning. Were in the 30s and 40s for a lot of the bay area and with manyf us out of power. It is a chilly morning to start a lot of you probably waking up to pretty cold home, especially if you dont have power come forn that this afternoon were going to be comfortable under clear skies temperatures will rise into the 60s and 70s. Robin, off to san mateo bridge where traffic is a little bit heavier than normal. We had. An accident and foster city. Backed up traffic across the 70 oh bridge wher was already pretty crowded so it just made things much much heavier. If you need to use 92. Thats why were up to 37 minutes to make it over to the peninsula. The hot spots are problems into San Francisco. But this line here at the toll plaza continues to spill back through the bottom of the maze. A quick peek at at one oh one werchecking in on traffic because we have a crash in Mountain View which is actually southbound at ellis but its impacting both sides. So southbound its going to be slow at least from a palo alto to Mountain View northbound youre backed up all the way into san jose daria thanks a our Team Coverage of the fire and and the bad air and the power tages here in the bay area because of the g at a live look here. We have the latest on the kincade fire burning in Sonoma County in large part on the control, but they did get. 15 contained because they had a break in the winds yesterday still this fire has expanded to more the 75,400 acres. But with a break in the win today. They could make some more progress we went from 5 to 15 yesterday, solar and ready make some more progress today yet of course for those that have been evacuated have been evacuated out of certain areas in Sonoma County, the worries always about. You know, hows the neighborhood doing how are the homes how the businesses and joining us on the phone to help shed a little light on that with Sonoma County Sheriffs Department is misty would once again, thank you for joining us as you did last week your information last time was hugely important. Thank you very much for having me and thanks for covering thawe appreciate get the word out to you and whats the latest with the evacuations there. The most difficult thing that youre facing today. Right now there were no change of overnit. So the good news is that. Or no major incidents and job looks pretty quiet night which is fantastic to hear were going to be wahing the wind really closely. So at the going to the next wind event to be still working with our cal fire partners really closely and seeing which way the fire may move if it changes direction at all try to balance that with people who are understandably really really ready to get back to their home and you did let some people go back yesterday. We did with the we. All of west county of the valley, 40 feet down area. Doctor paul the coast all of that was reduced to an evacuation warning which means you can still be there. But be advised your own risk that conditions could change you need to stay vigilant. Challenge out there that there is no power and often times no gas. So even though people are allo
