Mid to upper 30s, daytime highs on into the afternoon rise into the 70s, a warmer day ahead and even yesterday was rebecca all right, thank you john were going to head to the bay bridge toll plaza approach its been great all morning long very friday light here. You can see meaning lights were turned on a little bit later than normal just after 6 oclock this morning and in the back im not too bad just about to the 80 over crossing. The drive times standing pretty good 15 minutes out of the maze across the upper deck and into San Francisco. The san mateo bridge. Its packs but traffic is moving 21 minutes. Thats a good commute time across the flat section, no issues, no issues on the high rise getting over to one oh one. But what i want is definitely been a problem spot. This morning. And its from an earlier hot spot that we had just a before the 2 oclock hour thats been cleared. And it was actually right here at the 3rd avenue acts exit on south the one on one on that side. And now we do have that accident Still Standing that was in the back of a popular still has the right lane blocked and were still seeing traffic slow on both sides to 2. 80. Were welcoming a definitely going to be good alternate in the meantime back to thank you very much rebecca, some breaking news overnight. The Good Samaritan ended up being hit and killed on southbound 1 one to who is trying to help out another driver, thats right we want to check in with kron 4 Sarah Stinson has been live on the scene talking to crews have who have been investigating this crash sarah whats the latest. Tragic scene because as you said good a samaritan just trying to help someone who was on the road just completely crash after they hit the Center Divide that person was struck and killed by another car now theyre still trying to investigate. How all of the cars are involved theres 4 total cars involved take a look at the video you can see the 2 main this call came in around one 54 chp got a call of a solo car crash just before the 3rd avenue exit in the southbound lanes on one oh one here in san mateo this eye on you see was stopped in the middle of the lanes but after crashing into the Center Divide that at some point a man in his late 20s or 30s driving a bmw pulled over to help. And thats when he was struck by another car. He died on scene and the driver of this island has been taken to the hospital to stanford with injuries 3 to 4 actually 4 cars total are involved in multiple cars crashed the 2 other cars, theyre still trying to figure out if those cars hit the scion but for sure one of them did hit the man that got out of his car chp says another tragic story where someone gets out of their car to help someone but in turn puts themselves and major danger take a listen to chp talking about this type of situation. I was standing outside of his vehicle which is inherently unsafe anytime youre outside of your vehicle standing in lanes we appreciate when people to try to help out however any time that youre not of lanes of traffic its extremely dangerous. Thats why we highly recommend if anybody is involved in a traffic collision to either get out of lanes as soon as possible or at the very least make sure that all lighting possible is lit up including your hazard lights on and stay inside your vehicle using any safety restraint system the eye so your seat belts well as youre about to spark that system its an extremely tragic event when you do have somebody thats just trying to other people that are in a bad situation and then they themselves get hurt. It definitely tragic for those some good advice from chp to always stay in your car and call 911 if you want to of course want to help and they see someone in need so its good to call 911, but dont get out of your car now that scene has been completely cleared it did cause some slick residual traffic. So when youre more information they havent told us anything in terms of you know the man who died whats his name and his exact age also i want to get an update on their investigation, but they said they do not expect any of the drivers to have been drinking or under the influence of any drugs of any kind for now live in san mateo Sarah Stinson kron 4 news. Thank you very much sara. Also another big story this morning in just a few hours time from now we expect to learn more from oakland city leaders as they talk about the firing of police chief Anne Kirkpatrick surprising for some, but the decision to fire her was unanimous between the mayor and members of the Police Commission. Kron fours will tran covering that story for us this morning in oakland, well. Robin james, im in front of city hall where about an hour from now the people who made the decision to fire her will reportedly flesh out more why they decided to fire or without cause it came out of nowhere so this morning oakland once again is looking for a new police chief just 3 years on the job there was nothing as she did in recent memory that led to the firing which is why this was such a bombshell decision and kirkpatrick was the citys First Female Police officer in fact she was hired after 3 Police Chiefs in the span of 7 months for another controversy involving oakland and other Police Departments in the bay area. Reportedly Many Police Officers having with an underage girl so she was brought in to clean things up instead during her time as police chief there was a lot of animosity between her and the Police Commission one of the most powerful Police Commissions in the country made up of civilians and they had the power to fire her but their decision would have been moat had it not been for mayor libby shaft because he was ultimately her decision to sign off on it. Heres the Police Commissioner and mayor libby shaft talking about their decision. There wasnt enough. Leadership and so that we needed new leadership for oakland, its my duty as the mayor to recognize the role and authority of this commission. And also to recognize when the trust between the Police Commission and the police chief has become irrevocably broken. Will prevent this city from moving forward. So you heard the mayor talking about the trust between the commission as well as the police chief 2 years ago, there was a lot of dispute on whether 5 Police Officers were justified as shooting a man who had been sleeping between his area between a couple of homes, he was armed at the time, but he was sleeping at the time and those officers opened fire on him. A lot of people including the Police Commission wanted police chief to at the very least fire. Those Police Officers instead she decided according to them to protect those Police Officers so the animosity kept growing and growing and growing and then suddenly without warning yesterday they met behind closed doors with the mayor and decided to fire her. Now kirkpatrick has a decision to make whether or not she signs off on her termination and if she does shes entitled to about 270,000 we are in front of city hall on once that News Conference begins we will carry that live for you. Back tears. Okay, thank you very much well meanwhile, the Oakland Police Officers Association has released a statement regarding kirkpatrick firing and it reads in part. The Oakland Police Officers Association stands ready to work with whomever is our next chief of police. Despite the changes at the top the department local Police Officers continue to come to work every day and serve our residents in californias most crime challenge city. Well now to another big story that were following for you this morning, a coronavirus patient is being treated now in San Francisco. Yeah that person was infected on that diamond cruise ship, im a princess cruise ship in japan. They were quarantined at Travis Air Force base the San Francisco hospital involved is taking all appropriate precautions for both the patient and the staff. So theyre not releasing the name of the hospital of course to protect patient privacy, but the 2 patients previously hospitalized in San Francisco. Theyve been discharged and theyre no longer in the city. Well the first confirmed patient in Santa Clara County has also made a full recovery that man was isolated at home and monitored by Public Health staff and he tested positive for coronavirus after returning from wuhan just last month. Health Officials Say that he was never sick enough to be hospitalized and weve got more than a 115 people now that ended up her ended their 2 week quarantine at Travis Air Force base in fairfield and then a Marine Corps Air station in miramar in san diego. So theyve all been released in fact this is video of some of the evacuees leaving travis. Those evacuees have been living at that military bases flying out of wuhan china because of the coronavirus all 53 people at travis completed their quarantine and theyre all now medically cleared to leave. Well a much different story in china it counted 889 new cases and a 118 deaths that just on wednesday. Now those numbers bring the total to over 75,400 infections and now 2200 deaths. In the south bay. We have a group of wuhan natives now living in san jose and theyre banding together to send medical supplies back to wuhan and the nearby cities affected by coronavirus the nonprofit is called wuhan united it was formed about a month ago and was one of the first shipments are this was one of the first shipments it sent to Wuhan Union Hospital well now theyre on their 8 shipment to china equipment with over. Know what millions of masks about isolation gowns gloves all of that is heading to the places in china that need it most actually talk to the founder of the nonprofit who was molly prop close to tears as he was thinking about wuhan a place where he was born and raised. Is locked know what it can go out and go you. The citys a sacrificing for the whole country from the war. Nobody has ever seen consideration in World History in history of mankind, you know city of the problem people can look to. It will harm united sent over 2 million supplies so far theyve even got their hands on half a million of those really hard to come by and 95 masks. Again theyre now headed to help those that are most in need. Coming up on the kron 00 04am morning. A high school in the east bay is shut down after a cancer causing chemicals found on campus. Well have emotional reaction from concerned parents. Im Trevor Shirley in washington unemployment numbers are and some of the lowest levels in a decade. But some people say just because more americans are working doesnt mean theyre making enough to live on. Ive got that story coming up. And a more and sellers of fake coronavirus items and Many American workers will get extra day off this year by jane king will have their stories coming up. Finally seeing some rain on the radar but not so much from the bay area. More snow to our south along the Central Coast in the central valley. Im talking what to expect for the weekend ahead. And a great commute into San Francisco, not tracking any problems for your westbound 80 right across the upper deck 15 minutes for the zezinski take. Tom steyer. Berman tom steyer. Odonnell surging in nevada. Scarborough this is working for tom steyer. Odonnell surging in South Carolina. Smerconish i dont think its just resources. Mitchell surging in two new polls out of nevada and South Carolina. Wallace polling at double digits. King up eleven points from october. That is dramatic. Steyer im saying we have a broken government. Thats whats going on in washington, dc. Its been bought by corporations, and my question to the American People is who do you think is going to change that . Im tom steyer and i approve this message. Lowes is here to. Those outdated appliances. Shop our president s day event. And get up to 40 off select appliance special values. Like a whirlpool laundry pair now just 856. Plus, save on refrigerators. Ranges. Dishwashers, and more. Do it right for less. Start with lowes. Were back at 7. 15 chat with john about the friday forecast, its looking good at this point i start to feel a little guilty because i know we need rain will be more snow in the sierra but 70s today, john thats nice about another nice day guys conditions out there today going to be nice and warm across the bay area, lets get a look at your web cam outside. Conditions definitely clear looking at the horizon we do have some cloud cover overhead and as we make our way through the day youre going to see a lot more cloud cover showing up than what we had been seeing yesterday and that has to do with the system passing to our south which is offering up some rain for areas of central and Southern California little bit of snowfall for the southern Sierra Nevada 2 overnight tonight, some light showers right along the coast and then also looking at showers pushing on through the day tomorrow for central and southern parts of the state. Not really looking at that potential for the bay area nor on up to the sierra in the tahoe region, either these areas are going to remain dry. Daytime highs today up into the 70s as robin and james are mentioning oakland in fremont 73 degrees for your high temperatures, San Francisco at 70 while san jose at 74 napa and Santa Rosa Beach 75 for todays daytime highs. Tomorrow and sunday a little cooler than today with highs only in the 60s but that still warmer than we should be. We only have really one week left to february and it looks like the end of the month is going to be off to a dry finish much like weve started it. But march could bring some rainfall been tracking that long range forecast looks like march first is our best chance of rain in the forecast, lets keep our fingers crossed for the march miracle. Rebecca. Thank you john we are going to do a full bridge checks starting off with the bay bridge toll plaza approach and that things are looking good in the San Francisco. Its a smooth ride only 13 minutes across the upper deck into the city the back of just extends past the 80 the over crossing. It would be a little bit sluggish across the upper deck, but no major problems to report so that is good news there things are moving here. The san mateo bridge looking great the right hand side of your screen that is the commute side 20 minutes. Coming out of the east bay making your way over to the peninsula and look at this a nice sunny shot of the richmond sandra fell bridge and traffic is a moving pretty good so little bit a backup behind the pay gates, but once you get on to that dec its only 10 minutes getting into the north bay and coming out of the north bay looks great the Golden Gate Bridge said nice shot here a little bit breezy there you can see the flag flying that a nice a nice visibility only 20 minutes. Coming out of nevado and then on south one oh one across the deck and to the pay gates now back to the news. All right. Thank well a new report suggests that almost half of working americans are struggling to support themselves and their families, washington dc correspondent Trevor Shirley explains. The Trump Administration often points to economic strength through strong unemployment numbers, currently around 3. 5 . A Record Number of Young Americans are now employed, but according to a new study by the brookings institution. 44 of workers between 1864 years old only make about 18,000 a year. Thats about 10 bucks an hour. So the unemployment numbers really important but its not the whole story. Just have to look at wages, martha ross one of the studys authors says those wages often arent enough to live on especially for millions of Service Sector workers. We have a lot of retail clerks we have a lot of janitors a lot of house keepers we have a lot of jobs that dont pay very much. The study says part of the solution includes more education and skill building along with employers paying more i think a higher minimum wage is part of it but some Like Heritage Foundation economist Romina Bhatia says that could actually hurt workers but its going to hurt minorities less educated workers younger workers who are already seeing this today. She says a broader approach is needed. But we also need to look at where are the barriers that are keeping people from moving into higher earning positions ross as any solution should include the government and private sector. I think it has to be partnership reporting in washington, im Trevor Shirley. Well for your money this morning baby yoda is ready for his closeup an amazon tell sellers it will take down listings for products that claim to kill coronavirus weve got jane king live the nasdaq with these stories and more age and james like good morning to amazon informed 3rd party sellers. Welcome back to the kron 4 morning news at t g i crimea call again todays going to be a nice one at least on the weather front. Lets hope he can get out the door where gone with 2 it looks like all the major hotspots we kind of got them over and done with in the morning so hopefully the rest of your friday morning commute will be friday fingers crossed, yes, im looking friday light as far as weather just like in right on the i would get out there at the Golden Gate Bridge from timber on nice blue skies overhead but you also do see the evidence of some of those clouds that have been talking about throughout the morning that will be drifting in and out across the bay area at times today that we are going to see dry skies here across the bay area and some mild temperatures a mild start to the morning. Really comfortable afternoon ahead of us 40s and 50s is where most of us are at right now a few north bay areas in the 30s and although central and Southern California are seeing some much needed rainfall. These next couple of days. Bay area just too far north to be getting in to that rainfall so we actually state quite dry and quite warm too with high temperatures well into the 70s today. Rebecca how the conform to the sunshine and the 70s john thats for sure. And the traffic really cooperating right now getting in the San Francisco, it looks really packed here which it is behind the cash lanes trying to get in the San Francisco. But the back a pretty light just past the over crossing that is great for this hour. Its going to be a under 15 minutes into San Francisco across the upper deck and weve been problem free here all morning long the san mateo bridge traveling grade look at the flat section. Speeds are at the limit the high rise, no problems and 19 minutes coming out of the nimitz trying to make that connection with one oh one in san mateo coming up all checked the Richmond Center fell bridge and the golden gate jenks. Thank you very much robert. Rebecca should say one of the big stories. Were following out of the east bay involves a high school in oakland that shutdown now till further notice after a cancer causing chemical was found on campus grounds. The you can clearly see their parents are upset at School Leaders and express that during a special meeting to discuss the chemical that was found on the grounds of a climate high school. Crews found that chemical while removing a fuel tank next to the schools tennis courts. The school will remain closed now at least through early next week for air quality tests. Our concern is that there realized tc that that seeped through the ground and through our floors into the building in the air. And so if there are elevated levels of that then we can have school here. School officials confirmed the chemical did not originate on school grounds. They say the state is actually cleaning up a handful contaminated sites less than a mile away and all of those sites turns out are contaminated with that very same chemical. The School District by the way also acknowledged that the campus does have a history of highprofile cases of cancer including 2 graduates of the clients. Darrell akens died from leukemia back in 2017 just a month after he graduated and this past fall a graduate from 2018. Raymond sanders died of bone cancer. He was 20 years old to time playing football at Laney College it was during his first season there that he broke his leg and that is when doctors discovered the cancer. At this point theres no definitive link between these deaths and the discovery of the a climbs high school but theyre looking into that. The layoffs are looming for San Francisco schools because of a major budget shortfall district Staff Members and teachers at one of us to mann. They received an email from their superintendent warning them about the drastic cuts to their budget superintendent doctor Vincent Matthews he goes on to say that theyve just depleted their reserves and that employee cuts will be made it to a million budget shortfall. Im horrified we need more teachers, more resources more money not less not less of everything in this city where we pay so much in property tax how in the world are they cutting the budgets for school really the message thats being sent. Is that the district is not prioritizing the people who are on the front line so were doing the best we can here. Why is the money why where did the money go. Well a School District spokesperson says that they do not have specifics at this time as to who may lose their jobs or just how many Staff Members will be let go. Happening tomorrow all eyes will be on nevada when voters there make their decisions on the democratic primary with early voting. Thats already started as the candidates are making their final push for votes, Kristen Drummond has the latest. Rest of it continuing the fight for votes, im not ready to go way senator Elizabeth Warren joining supporters at a campus kickoff in North Las Vegas thursday morning a chance to not only mobilize but criticize Mike Bloomberg following the democratic debate i have really had it. Whereas billionaires regardless of party. Think that the rules dont apply to them. Good morning, everyone former Vice President joe biden met with gun violence survivors and activist in west los vegas, he vows to pass legislation at the federal level to change gun laws. I will make. This promise today. Those families hurting across the country. I will never. Never never. Give up this fight. Were not going to. Most stops. And to beat the nra tom styer continuing his campaign despite not qualifying for the democratic debate. The news now and Emerson College poll shows the businessman ranking 6th in nevada with nearly 10 percentage points. I havent seen this ball it would be surprising to me. But id like to be able to dig in, but what were seeing consistently in terms of early vote, consistent in terms of our our of polling is something which i describe it a second or 3rd and moving up. Candidates working to persuade last minute voters and address issues important to their campaign. Well after the nevada air after nevada votes tomorrow, the next primary contest will be South Carolina one week from saturday and 3 days after that 14 states, including california. Well head to the polls on super tuesday. San Francisco Police are looking for 3 people there wanted in connection to 3 carjacking attempts take a look at this map here that we have for you. Yeah, looking great out there guys we have 70s today, some sunshine to complain about any of okay, no complaints definitely i hear you well, okay, maybe one complaint we need the rays. Yeah, thats we are looking at clear skies over timber on right now at least you do see out there in the distance some cloud cover past the Golden Gate Bridge. What were going to be seeing for parts of the state of some rainfall this weekend. Obviously thats not the situation in the bay area though Central Coast Sierra Nevada down into Southern California. Each looking at areas of rainfall arriving tonight and then becoming more widespread through the day tomorrow. So if your plans this involve heading south down to these areas do watch out for some slick roadways. We havent seen rain in a while in these areas so possibly some oil on roadways that could make for some extra slick conditions notice the bay area and even lake tahoe just too far north to be picking up much if any. The rain or snow fall from the system it will move out of the bay area are out of the state on sunday bay area to stay dry during that time so a nice dry weekend for your weekend plans of course we just need the rain at this point now heres the good news for you we do have a drier rest of your february looking likely ahead of us looks like february could actually be a historically dry month. But there is rainfall in sight. Not arriving in tel march though which is not this sunday but next and a longrange forecasts are showing the likelihood of some rainfall arriving around that time keep your fingers crossed for it because we certainly do need it by this point. Temperatures in the 70s for your highs today, a very pleasant day if were not getting the rainfall might as will step outside and enjoy all that sunshine napa and santa rosa 75 each oakland, a nice 73 today. Temperatures tomorrow and sunday, not as warm as todays down into the 60s. Next week looks mild and dry to close out your last week of february. And it looks good john looking good on the roads to this morning. No major problems in major hot spots right now so that is a the good news and enjoy all the sunshine where youre out about driving this morning. The bay bridge toll plaza looking great lights are on but the back of not too bad just a thought to be a tv over crossing a fast track moving through just fine once you get on panel will be a little slow in going to San Francisco. But just under 15 minutes for your total commute time 17 minutes for the san mateo bridge look at this its gotten a lot lighter now as were getting closer to that 8 oclock hour friday, light right. No delays no issues of looks like theres a stall on the right hand shoulder the right here at the flat section but not causing any problems the high rise looks good and 17 minutes to that connection with one on one lightly traveled to the richmond sandra fell bridge. Im not tracking any issues its going to be smooth. All the way into the north bay and getting to want to 1, 9 minutes so far for your drive time on the west bound 5. 80 Golden Gate Bridge has been a problem for you all morning long it remains that way coming out of nevado south 1 one looks great nice and smooth across the golden gate and total drive trip of a 21 minutes into San Francisco james robin.
