Thank you so much for joining us here on kron 4 news at 5 im Justine Waltman President Trump said he wants places of worship back open this weekend and california may give them the green light to reopen sooner than expected. This comes as thousands of charges across the state were repaired to defy the restrictions anyway. Our Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala explains. Governor Gavin Newsome friday announced churches and other houses of worship are now days away from receiving reopening guidelines a different tone from his comments at the start of the week saying in Person Services were weeks away from resuming and we are just days away. The latest on monday. We will put out those guidelines so i want folks to know that ive made that abundantly clear in the last week but not everybody as picked up on it, but its so important that folks understand that we deeply respect and in my ear, the faith devotion. And the that unites millions and millions of californians. The Development Comes just hours after President Trump declared houses of worship essential services and said he would override a governors who dont open them up this weekend. Some governors have deemed a Liquor Stores and abortion clinics is essential. But it left out churches and other houses of worship. Star right. Some correcting this injustice in calling houses of worship essential is asked about the comments newsome once again refusing to criticize the president and instead said his administration is reviewing new cdc guidelines and reiterated state efforts underway with faith leaders to come up with protocols for a safe return to service is the governor pressed again to respond directly to the president s statements any response what the president said. I think that was an adequate response. Earlier this week, 1200 pastors leading up to 3,000 california houses of worship signed a declaration deeming themselves essential and the green to defy original State Government orders by beginning services may 31st, how soon the state will let them reopen that information could be out by the end of the weekend in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. Static and hallelujah of giving got to raise that as an answer to prayer and im so happy about and i hope and governor newsome listen to that and allow us to be able to reopen swift reaction to President Trump calling on churches to re open doors and welcome back congregations were more than ready. Jelly weve been sequestered in for quite a while now. But not everyone believing it is that simple interesting to me how the communities of faith are defined were not defined by our buildings has it been a difficult time yes, its been a very difficult and a different time for people of faith we pray wherever we are and we have found ways to do service and to continue gathering Bishop Minerva car can of the United Methodist church says that she along with other Church Members have been working with the governor on when it would be safe to have people gather even this week i was one among other religious leaders meeting with his staff to talk about safety protocols taking and the knowledge the wisdom of health and science expert cdc as well as she had these pointed words for the president. But he cannot override our border, religious moral responsibility to keep people safe as for pastor jackson he along with several other members in oakland recently sued the state. Now wants to get rolling as fast as possible at a reputation that we want to get the eye and then we go to churches anyway and it exposed people to this coronavirus and what it has foolishness settles in and maybe some pastors that are going to do that but believe me majority of us pastors were not going to jeopardize our members this coronavirus were going to do. Everything that theyre asking us to do in order to come but to the state for the safety of our key. Theresa kron 4 news. And up next School Campuses were forced to close early because of the pandemic but what about summer camps. We were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or closing your shades during the day. Stay well and keep it golden. Though the school year ended with virtual classes. It is almost over but there was some good news regarding summer camps today, San Francisco mayor london breed announced that the City Summer Camp Program will begin on june 15th. Even though it will look a little bit different than it has in previous years, lets find out how. With kron fours dan kerman is live now at San Francisco rec and Park Headquarters in Golden Gate Park with an update good evening. Dan. Good evening justine thats right summer camp is going to continue in San Francisco as you mentioned its going to look quite a bit different kids are going to be kept in pods of 12 not going to have to stay in those pods with those same kids for a 3 week program, its all to keep everybody safe. Theyre also going to be opportunities for teenagers to help out with those programs as counselors but for the most part, the mayor wants to emphasize that camp will resume so parents will have a place for their kids. I ve great news to announce that San Francisco will allow summer programming to began. During an online conversation friday, San Francisco mayor london breed and the heads of the rec and Parks Department and the children youth and Families Department announced parents will have a place to send their kids this summer. Its super important for kids first of all to get outside and re engage in yes with a walk there will be indoor spaces by a lot more emphasis on being outside the summer for our children only this year the camps will not look like what you see in this video from previous years thats because as a safety measure each child will be put in a group of 12 and stay in that socalled pod for a 3 week session. At rec and park a new that were planning over 25 different camps, we expect there to be another 40 to private care providers operating in our park system. I believe that is estimating nearly a 100 care providers operate will operate around the city among those nonprofits the y m c a of San Francisco. Which due to safety restrictions will not be able to serve as many kids as in the past. Through the difference is last year we would have over 2000 this year we will hope to have over 200 and we will be serving sure, but also the most vulnerable shes children in our communities, why mca camps will be more indoors than out with a focus on learning and helping kids catch up one of our bigger summer programs is about doing with the achievement gap we call the Summer Learning loss and so that is a very good at this is for us and were working all sort of ritual bases this is where really implying creativity to their kids that need it most that have the least access to technology and they really need a lot of teaching. That live in Golden Gate Park we can also tell you that among the Safety Measures as part of the summer programs include enhanced cleaning and temperature screenings live in San Francisco. Dan kerman kron 4 news. Thank you dan. And San Franciscos rec and Parks Department is continuing to add physical distancing circles 2 city parks today. Crews painted these circles at jackson playground. They can also be found at dolores park, Washington Square park and at the marina green the circles are about 10 feet wide and 8 feet apart. The department is adding the circles to try and encourage physical distancing before whats expected to be a very warm memorial day weekend. If this is what it takes to kind of keep everybody focus which one. Its tough to stay focused after after a couple months of this. Then im all for it. The circles are just for reference and people will not be cited for not staying within the circles, however, the city is still technically under a shelterinplace order so everyone is expected to maintain physical distancing and wear a mask. More streets are being added to San Franciscos slow Streets Program. The new initiative is aimed at giving walkers and bikers more distance father out without fearing any cars being around kron fours Jonathan Mccall tells us which streets are new to the list. The San Francisco. Slow Streets Program is quickly taking off at a fast pace. An additional 14 streets are now being added we were really looking for was to give people more space where it did eliminate some muni routes temporarily so instead of getting on the bus people were walking and biking to these essential trips the program launched in San Francisco just last month with streets closed to vehicles. The idea giving bikers and walkers a chance to distance themselves even more while also staying safe golden gate avenue from a sonic to divison darrow is now among the streets added to the list. Bikers we talked with say theyre excited about the change heading a if you want to get on they want theyre kato was with the San Francisco municipal transportation. What we learned was that people were really craving this outdoor additional stays and i really the only negative feedback weve received thus far is he why cant i have this on my street she says that even more streets will likely be
