Good evening, everybody thanks for being with us tonight at 8 oclock im grant lotus and im Vicki Liviakis thanks for joining us for kron 4 news at 8 well get to the situation in gilroy momentarily. But our top story tonight that massive fire. The damaged at least half a dozen San Francisco buildings and displaced at least 100 workers early this morning. We have Live Team Coverage from the scene of the fire which is still active to reaction from d out by flames. How smoke from the fire affected folks in the surrounding areas. We begin with Taylor Bisacky is live in the south of market district, where one point roughly half the citys entire firefighting resources. Were helping out with this fire taylor. Well right now firefighters are still battling the hot spots inside one of those buildings and if you take a look here behind me at the scene here behind me its still very active. And youll notice that the fire engine that was dousing the buildings earlier recently stopped and theyre focusing their efforts on the bart filled sales building and thats a Building Materials company. So its probably why its been a little bit more difficult to put out this fire with everything inside. And while this fire isnt contained yet. Its looking a much better than what we saw earlier today this is what neighbors saw earlier this morning, the flames engulfed 6 commercial buildings. One of those buildings housed 3 people through an article Coalition Housing project. Those residents are now displaced in addition to the number of workers who had jobs at these buildings, some of the other businesses include a partial sales venice auto body and the catering business a talk to those Business Owners all of them of course heartbroken after watching their businesses crumble in the fire firefighters say theyll be out here for days putting out these hot spots. Multiple hot spots within that area. Im chuckling because it in my mind i cant. Fathom how many are in there behind me thats all we have a lot of pipe up we have some ground monitors up. And him lines to address those as they do occur. Every remember unfortunately, the pier 45 fire where we encountered almost the same dynamics of the flare ups of the hot spots which took days to extinguish thats what were encountered with. Today. Now i also want to mention that earlier today, several people brought up a mattress fire that started last night from one of the homeless encampment behind these buildings on erie street firefighters say that that fire was put out by 1130 last night so at this time they do not believe its the cause however Business Owners here that the encampments could have started the second fire and are still curious. But of course we dont know because its still undetermined but. So far in the early phase of this investigation. We are told that firefighters believe that the point of origin of this fire was the back of the bar field sales building. We also heard earlier that a firefighter was injured in this fire, thankfully they have since been released from the hospital and are doing ok now live in San FranciscoTaylor Bisacky kron 4 news. Thank you taylor that fire erupted in an area of the city that is both industrial and residential. Kron fours Maureen Kelly continues our Team Coverage with reaction from Business Owners and residents were forced to evacuate because of the fastmoving flames. Heres video that shows the flames shooting up alongside the central freeway people showing up to work nearby captured images of the huge wall of flames and the massive column. 6 black smoke. People who are just waking up had to scramble to get out in case the fire moved in their direction as quite scary. So we just decided to grab our personal belongings same bottom stab at great, so we did evacuate very quickly. One man was asleep inside his business along with his dog when the fire broke out. I looked to the sky building and theres a column of black smoke about 3 or 4 feet wide grab my dog run around and within 20 minutes, the entire block was in flames is building was flooded by the water used to put out the flames, its devastating for the business course along with everybody in covid in business down many for a lot of businesses this is you know to something that. You know what you know for being locked down for so long, you know Something Like this is just another you know you just got to take it in stride. You can see the remains of heart failed sales of Building Materials company that had stood in this spot for decades literally side because the building was such an icon for this neighborhood was i just said.
