Downtown businesses in los altos have been taking advantage of the citys open Streets Program, but they hope that the heat wont keep customers away from their already struggling restaurants and Retail Stores. Our kron fours dan thorn is live for in los altos tonight, he joins us now with more hi dan. We have a key a lots of restaurants here in downtown los altos were seen putting up on bellas and canopies because they want their customers to be as comfortable as possible as this hot weather sets in over the next couple of days, the open Streets Program has been really beneficial for these restaurants because it allows customers to enjoy some al fresco dining. But for some Retail Stores here this open Streets Program has had some challenging results. With temperatures teetering around the mid 90s in downtown los altos businesses scrambled to keep their customers cool. Im all hot right now myself but brought in more on pro as and were trying to encourage encourage people to still come and restaurants like the post on main street want people to continue to come out despite a heat wave moving through the area. Theyre one of many places that have set up umbrellas and canopies we are offering sunscreen and things like god pushing water, some customers however say they dont mind sweating it out to show their support for businesses already struggling through the covid19 crisis, its hot but its theres no bugs in theres no humidity this is this is still pretty nice mid relies and the me their restaurant and other businesses are helping to keep it going in for people its its wonderful but for some Retail Stores. The heat has been less of a worry then actually getting customers to come in if theyre going to close on the streets for the rest of the year which has been talked about the need to get both sides the restaurant scene to survive and so do the retailers for restaurants foot traffic continues to be a little bit of a concern with scorching temperatures looming over the next few days normally business hot here so it was pretty hot. The past though its been pretty i guess well see over a 100 degrees again kind of like were going to do whatever we can to keep people cool. But overall i think it should a successful weekend. Their a c longer than usual, but a state agency is asking residents to limit electricity use. Lonnie wong takes us inside whats considered the traffic patrol for power here in california. The California Independent system operator is the traffic cop for power in the state at its headquarters in folsom that directs the flow of electricity to an open market system getting power from where theres a surplus to weather is in need during a heat wave, there may not be enough to go around the state. Thats why it issued a voluntary flex alert from 03 00pm to 10 00pm beginning friday afternoon possibly your laundry or your dishes at running large appliances king, either before 03 00pm for after 10 00pm that includes turning up your thermostat shutting lights and blacking out windows. Every little bit helps because the consequences can be big were talking about is that planned that are disruptions that would be rotated trout communities throughout the neighborhoods. Customer own utility easement is asking its customers to lower electricity use during its peak hour period of 05 00pm to 08 00pm for another reason to save money. The early evening peak is when customers are charged more for power because cost is tied to the man when it comes to the energy markets. Smith says it plan to head for the heat wave and customers wont see brownouts or blackouts but it also says it would rather not pay for dirty power during those peak periods, not use plants that generate electricity using fossil fuels we want to try to not buy extra power that would also count on plants like that. One strategy is to pretty cool homes people 4 5 oclock which works best for newer homes, they likely will retain a lot of that cool air until you get to the 8 oclock period in turn your back. Smith says it will be on alert for the next week or so were all hands on deck. We have extra line crews that can go out and handle any fused related outages things like that that happened from over demand on the Distribution System in sacramento. Lonnie wong. The kerry spoke with 2 boards supervisors, one who voted in favor of and another who voted against hiring the new deputies to service their jail as far as how theyre going to be paid well both told me that it was a misconception. The funding is being diverted away from coronavirus release. Contra costa county board of supervisors voted 4 to one in support of hiring 24 new sheriffs deputies to specifically help Mental Health professionals give proper care to inmates who need special attention in their jail. A recent report claimed that their one 0. 75 Million Dollars needed to cover their salaries would come from federal funding known as the cares act that is specifically meant for coronavirus prevention district 2 supervisor Candice Anderson who proved the new hires explains thats not the case existing deputies who took precautions within the jail to prevent an outbreak. Were paid from the cares act, but the incoming deputies salaries will actually becoming from the money saved as a result in the general fund. So the savings from the cares act and paid deputies who are going to be reimbursed because we are helping them do different jobs and they were doing in the jail previously covid related jobs that savings we can then transfer and utilize for these new positions that we need to have in the jail to really enhance the Mental Health services as well as just regular health services. The only vote against the new hires came from supervisor john gioia who agrees Mental Health support is vital for inmates. But believes existing resources should be used instead of the dozens of newcomers who he estimates will cost the county 5 Million Dollars a year i voted against expenditure because i believe we could located sheriffs deputies from another facility rather create new positions. While these were not directly funded cares act positions, they were. Funded from the general fund i still opposed. These positions because i believe at this time we did not need to create those 24 new positions. Supervisor anderson says the current deputies removed from the marsh creek jail have already been given new roles and adds that the closure is temporary and the sheriff may wanted to reopen again the joyous as that. Its ultimately the boards decision which they will revisit in september. So in the meantime both agree that the county should continue to invest more into Community Support services that help people with Mental Health issues to avoid them from landing in jail in the first place live in the newsroom.
