Contained and the czu august lightning complex fires burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Now 19 contained calfire seeing cooler weather and extra resources coming from outside the bay area has certainly helped crews gain some ground on these fires and weve got Team Coverage of the czu lightning complex fire in san mateo and santa cruz counties. And you can take a look here at the map and it shows you the areas burned by that fire or complex of fires which has destroyed more than 440 homes and other structures kron fours will tran is live now at the Cal Fire Base Camp in Scotts Valley with the latest well. No i can tell you the conditions are favorable for firefighters at this particular time it is cold, its still smoky. And yes, the fires are still burning but slowly its not chewing through all of that dry vegetation that we saw over the fast the first couple of days of this fire, lets get right to the video it is tearing through parts of Santa Cruz County including bonny doon many areas within that city just decimated by the fire. Right now as james talked about 80,000 acres burned yes thats more than 24 hours ago, but not a significant jump because 24 hours ago we were sitting at around 77,700 so in additional 2000 acres over 24 hours calfire well take that any time as supposed to say 10 or 20,000 acres every day theyre establishing control lines as we speak and those control lines are very important because right now its protecting the city of santa cruz, its protecting Santa Clara County from the fires reaching into the heart of Santa Clara County. And its also protecting you see santa cruz. But protection is not just happening by firefighters a lot of local residents are staying behind and fighting the fires which according to authorities they say that is not advised and thats not sitting well with the residents. A lot of fire ive seen a lot of firefighters that i feel like are being held back and were being told that if we are seen on the road that we will be put are being arrested. We are not allowed to put out fires on other Peoples Properties we can only protect their own property at this point which is to read if i i do i dont let anybody else do it. But im doing it. Firefighters are saying they dont want people in there because they have their hands full with the fire right now in the last thing they want to do is to break away and save peoples lives. So theyre encouraging people to stop doing that and leave that area but you can clearly see theyre not making arrests at this particular time as far as the fire 19 containment 24 hours ago we were sitting at around 17 containment so theyre almost one 5th of the way as far as containment keep in mind containment means just surrounding the fire from spreading it does not mean that the fire is completely out. Coming up at 6 oclock as we have done every day for the past several days. In fact the past week or so we will carry that News Conference for you live with calfire met the in this Incident Command Center and they will have a News Conference in about 15 minutes from now will carry that for you live. Back to you all right, thanks a lot. Well and that fire this easy fire did go through the oldest state park in california take a look. This is the big basin redwoods state park. And this is what it looks like now with the damage there. Redwood trees there close to 1000 years old in that park. The good news is many of those older trees did survive when the forest fires happened in the wind storms and lightning hit the big trees. They did not topple over those that did not topple over now they can re sprout. Park officials are going to be inspecting the trees in the days to come. Right now, lets jump to the lnu complex fires, those are the ones burning up in the north bay and heres a map showing where all these fires are burning you can see theyve wrapped completely around Lake Berryessa on the right hand side of course that complex of fires burning to the left of your screen there out near the Russian River Sonoma Napa Solano counties, those are the counties impacted so napa residents also had a chance to go home to in fact this is some video from the witcher family on the day that they had to leave as the hennessy fire spread into the town of bury us a highlands, and you can see here is a driveby clearly some homes in that neighborhood are on fire. The area is still closed to the public cal fire says the hennessy fire has spread to a little more now than 296,000 acres. And it is about 29 contained. And with the growing containment numbers evacuation orders for some are being lifted. Including some in sonoma where theres still a lot of active fires burning on the west side of dry creek valley. The walbridge fire in Sonoma County has burned over 54,000 acres and is 17 contained. A lot of people on the east side of the dry creek area were able to return home yesterday and heres what one teenager had to say about his experience evacuating. Its pretty tragic in a buzz, leaving leaving your house is not like something you want to do. But ive had like a previous experience with the past couple fires that there has been. So i was in like that were doing now is just a little bit. Evacuees say the smoke was so bad in the area you can hardly see the other cars that were evacuating with you. Firefighters are hoping to get a better handle on the fire on the west side so that folks there can begin to return home as well. We continue our coverage of the s c you lightning complex fire. Now you can see on your screen. The areas burned in that one alameda contra costa and santa clara counties in kron fours reyna harvey is live in the east bay with a look at the damage done reyna. And good morning, im here livermore off of mines roads you can see behind me. He and his role blocked off for the next 10 miles or so theyre only allowing residents who live in the area to come pass those lines there now this fire is making history, becoming the second largest in our state were going to show you the images from that fire this was sent to us by residents in the air you can see the fire on the hillside, so this is a very rural fire. This theres a lot of grass in this area there are about 20,000 structures that are damaged but only about 6 or so have actually burn in this area so the main thing is trying to keep those home say, but you can see on your screen. These are homes that were not so fortunate, many of them, burned down to the ground now we spoke to one of the residents had to evacuate she was coming back into the area she had a chance to see your home for the first time take a listen. Were just getting to the line a sleigh really doing a lot of there and then like this is kind of and the state has to read packed what we could the jeep was full to the brim we got everything that starts clothing and the like and for documents but everything has pretty much gone of their pictures and stuff like that. All right so residents returning back into the area also we know that several firefighters have been injured trying to put out this fire so although they see more grass limon anything being burned still very dangerous fire for now reporting here off of lines road reyna harvey calling for ms. Thanks a lot of rain know continuing coverage on our website go to kron 4 dot com for everything we have interactive fire maps there shows you all the burn locations and the evacuation centers. We also are keeping track of this on kron on our 24 7 news app and were also keeping an eye on the air quality as well as fires of course continue have a major impact on that weve all. Smell the smoke for days now we have a map showing how bad the air quality actually is the darker the color, the worse the air and the worst air right now is out in the east bay, lets get a check air quality with john trouble in the Weather Center i have to say john actually walking out the door this morning. It did smell a lot clear out there i think i didnt pick up the smoke in the air as much as i have in days past the ad to happen at least some relief in that all kicked into gear yesterday we saw an increase seabreeze and deepening marine layer. All thats sweeping through the bay area helping to clean things up as far as air quality goes that camera took a second to load but once the dead you can see out there that what we are looking at is definitely some fog instead of haze and that a nice change we are going to be seeing fog through the morning as this fog eventually does retreat into the afternoon. Youre likely to notice some spots of haze still for use pay area so not necessarily a guarantee that things are going to be Crystal Clear all day long. But some big improvements from where we have been 50s 60s for your current temperatures with pittsburgh, it 63 right now Oakland Hayward and livermore each at 61. Berkeley alameda, starting things off in the 50s like much of the north bay in costar were dry across the bay and were going to stay that way dry and a little cooler today than we have been daytime highs barely the 90s for only a couple of cities with most of us actually in the 70s to 80s daria thanks a lot of times. Muni riders in San Francisco are or what going to have to stay on the bus for now transit Officials Say 2 major problems or keeping them from relaunching the rail service. The first is the problem with equipment and then the second a health issue involving covid19. At our Transportation Management center, its the nerve center of our entire rail system. We had an test covid positive. We followed our standard Contact Tracing quarantine procedures and as a result of we were concerned that we would not have the whole necessary team to be able to run the rail system safely. In the meantime the alternative from uni passengers is to continue using the all bus system that has been in place since april. All right, lets get a check of weather now is 5. 19 we have john trouble in the Weather Center with a closer look at that and looks actually feels a little nicer this morning. I dont know when open the windows when the clothes on my last night at midnight i smelled smoke oh yeah. Its tough to keep track guys this you know little smoke and just flow in there for your localized area even though for the most of the bay area we were pretty clear last night that doesnt necessarily mean all of us. Are going to be on that same page now generally things have been better late yesterday into this morning and we can actually think a deep in marine layer for that helping to push on through the golden gate last night really clearing things out as far as hayes go leaving us with some fog this morning though couple of spots with some cool drizzle right along the coastline. Most of us are free of haze this morning but the further inland you get the more likely you are to be seeing hazy conditions later in the day today, so air quality as we just talked about not necessarily going to be great for everyone today, even though a lot of us have been experiencing relief otherwise were all going to be seeing milder conditions and what we had been holding on to daytime highs, nice and cool compared to the triple digits in the upper 90s where we have been inland. You can see some be hanging out near the coastline even into the afternoon today pushing back inland tonight making for a another foggy evening across the bay but also helping to clean up some of the port air across the bay as it scoots inland as for winds right now were relatively calm and were going to stay that way into early afternoon hours when air quality will likely be at its worst then winds kick back up into the Late Afternoon and early evening that sea breeze is going to sweep things out yet again help to clean the air up just a little bit like we saw last night. Todays daytime highs in the 6
