KRON KRON 4 News At 5am July 12, 2024

Hayward napa and avato from my last check with you as we are seeing some low clouds beginning to raise right above the bay itself sear now starting to drive under the fog rather than right through it unless youre in Half Moon Bay at the coast where yeah visibility still a problem, 50s and 60s for your current temperatures with alameda dublin and san mateo all at 58 degrees right now oakland, youre at 60 with areas like berkeley and San Francisco a little cooler 56. Later today, a bit of a cooler afternoon can be expected with coastal temperatures in the 50s to 60s 70s, right along the bay and 80s and just a few 90s remaining inland. Ive got more details on especially that smoke with an updated smoke bap just here in a few minutes, robin. Actually i take it john lets talk more about that smoke we do have smoke from the fires causing bad air across the bay area. And you can see here on the map. Just kind of where it is at its worst the darker the color. The worse the air and in some areas, its hard to breed giant yeah, it sure is if you go outside you smell it right away so lets get to the coverage from 4 sarah stinson. Is in nevada thats one of the places that has had the worst smoke for days now sara. Just sitting here and its hard to breathe it affects your eyes and your nose and its its just irritating. You notice it right when you get out your house or car then youll notice that when youre driving on 1 one at night or in the Early Morning hours take a look at this map is actually hazardous here in the nevada area and marine county and you can see on your map that dark purple that means its hazardous of those pockets of this across the bay area. Its the worst in the north bay it gets better towards the south bay but in nevado thats where were seeing that thick haziness through waking up to poor air quality hazardous at if that in fact we also have of really crazy video from our quadcopter copters are drone and it shows you just this blanket of smoke and haziness this over 2 weeks of going through a spare the air alert from the bay area air Quality Management district and they are telling us it is not healthy to be breathing outside its best to stay indoors. If you can fortunately were still you know at this time where people are working from home so hopefully people can stay home but also it doesnt look like its going to be scorching hot today. So doesnt seem like youre going to have to open those doors to lift that air we talked with a man who has you know Underlying Health conditions he says this really really affects him. Cant do much about it. Im of pulmonary issues from the v a ive got to be very careful. Very careful so i i stay inside i just want my activities. You know i do some things start to get something strenuous. I stopped to rest the starter like that. Even if you dont have an Underlying Health condition. It is really a good idea to you know cut down on the Outdoor Recreation stay indoors as much as possible and now of course we wear mask everywhere so hopefully that will help a little bit with some of those up for air quality particles that you could be breathing but today we will be monitoring this when the sun comes up, i think well get even a better idea i could still see the haziness lose sky, especially in peoples headlights driving on one oh one and it doesnt seem like this is going to last long it seems like well have john monitor this more, but it seems like were going to get a sea breeze in maybe tomorrow, maybe thursday that could help but then we have higher temps coming so best to stay indoors. But for now its hazardous hazardous air in novato send it back to you guys in the newsroom. All right, thanks a lot. Well check in with you later and see if it lives at all and get better. Well wine makers too are on alert with the current wildfires are still burning across the bay area for some its not just the flames that can do damage its other things to the other smoke can affect the taste of the wine lonnie wong reports. Wildfire smoke has resulted in air quality warnings but along with people the smoke is also affecting wine grapes in area stretching from the Santa Cruz Mountains through napa and sonoma counties and into expanding wine regions in yolo county and beyond the phenomenon is labeled wine taint straight character in 4 o s. Because when making is an art based on complex flavors the hint of smoke and ash flavors in the final product can be ruinous to the final product, the frustrating thing is that there is no telling how much smoky feel based chemicals, grapes absorbed through the skin of the fruit, red grapes are more susceptible even if you cant taste it in the grapes themselves it can show up in the fermenting process and get stronger as the wine ages, it definitely makes one making a lot to take care of but host has done extensive field testing since the 2017 fires in napa and sonoma right now chemical testing of grapes and fermenting samples have been tried. There are also various filtering systems there are being developed which in turn can adversely affect the wines taste. Other strategies call for enhancing fruity flavors to mask the taint of smoke and protective coatings on the grants themselves are being looked at get some tools of the trade sometimes you can the care for but because of the good news for consumers is that california winemakers what released winds that are not to be spoke team to say look we need anything that could potentially i mean you know theyre like home. But that could also mean a potential loss of product that profit potential Economic Impact on the industry thats already struggling theres more research to be done because wildfires are going to be going away in years to come. Lonnie wong. And the smoke is impacting a farm workers there are picking fruits and vegetables the smoke from the czu fires is reaching Monterey County where the United Farm Workers Union says that 84 have not been provided with the masks and the ppe that they need since the pandemic hit. Last week picture surfaced as you can see here a field workers in salinas outdoors theyre working and you can see the heavy smoke in the background now a local Community Based Advocacy Group is working to collect donations for those farm workers were more likely to father chest like like like like if youre a small thing like 10 degrees on even smoke or it was a very hard to free and if any had its imagine now them that they are actually there for 10 hours monday to saturday. I called for one must have been for them. Cal osha posted guidelines for employers saying they do need to provide the proper protection when the air quality index reaches more than a 150. Critics say though the criteria should apply any time the air is not good. Well we have Team Coverage of the smoke in the bay area of course john trouble in the Weather Center has been tracking it as well and john we talked to sarah, we know that its bad up there in nevada what about the rest of the bay area what you thinks going to happen for the rest of the week. So unfortunately, james it doesnt look like the rest of the week is going to bring much relief at all in fact only worsening conditions likely as a ridge of High Pressure. Sets up shop across the bay area highs results and sinking air and in this case im pretty stagnant air at least through the course of the weekend now we still do have some of the same problem areas as we did yesterday as you mentioned we have sarah up in novato talking about that pocket of bad air that continues to remain this morning. We have seen some improvements on a couple of areas, someone to highlight those first including the marine had winds as well, San Francisco, as well south of san jose and then north of santa rosa where as you head further north you actually get some of the best air that we have in the state right now up into northern sonoma and eventually mendocino county. Now some of the worst air quality is right here in our backyard, lets zoom in on this pocket of bad air right around nevado now primary wind direction in this area is actually funneling a lot of the smoke right into one area you see petaluma winds from the north and west well you need us winds from the south and west sandra fell same direction that pushes it all into this one spot right there. It all depends on wind direction when it comes to smoke, and unfortunately for you in novato and other portions of sonoma and marin counties. You are in the midst of some of the worst of it and that was the case yesterday too so maybe a good time to drive a little further north. If you need to get outside for a few minutes. Back to you guys all right, thank you very much john. Now to more of our wildfire coverage. We have the latest containment numbers for you this morning for the major. Complexes that are burning and you can see on your screen will still start with the scu lightning complex fires thats the one impact in the east bay and portions of the south bay. Now up to 65 contain the lnu complex fires up in the north bay now 66 contained so even better there and the czu complex fires also growing in terms of containment. Its now at 41 contained so forward progress being made on all fronts a group of more than 2 dozen people in bonny doon teamed up to save homes from the czu lightning complex fires. Some are calling them the Bald Mountain brigade that they made a fire break along an unincorporated part of. Wilder ranch state park and there you see photos of them working away and that fire did get very close to homes but all of the 25 houses there within that area off smith grade road are Still Standing because of their efforts people in the area pitched in they didnt even live in that area. 10 of those people were actually mountain biker friends of mine that came up from santa they just wanted to help. There was 2 or 3 people that were from upper body and that lost their homes and felt helpless and that they hadnt been able to save their homes and they wanted to help and so they came down here to help fight the fire for us. And the group is still out there keeping an eye on hot spots to they say they know their actions are not encouraged by cal fire. But they just couldnt stand by and watch it burn. 5. 11 is the time, well take a quick break but still ahead Close Encounters around lake tahoe is more bears are wandering inside the stores in search of food and as you can see was caught on video have more of that coming up and a largely unwelcome visit the growing opposition in kenosha wisconsin ahead of President Trumps scheduled arrival today. And a sign of relief for some parents says the usda now extending Free School Meals for all children until the end of the year. Time now is 5. 16 and we want to get a look at the forecast out there john whats it like right now, yeah. Well guys what we are seeing right now some foggy conditions across parts of the bay area you can see that fog really having settled into the bay area, especially right along the bay and near the coastline and we are accompanying that fog with some haze yet again right near the coast in santa cruz and southern San Mateo County as well as his pocket marine in southern Sonoma County proving to be especially problematic better right through the golden gate in Marin Headlands as well as San Francisco. Now this fog what remains the haze is likely to remain though and that largely has to do with this ridge of High Pressure which is currently beginning to work its way back across the region. What this is going to do for us in the weekend as a result and stagnant and sinking air, its just going to sit in pool across the bay area. Unfortunately with wildfire still putting up smoke that means that smokes not going to really be transported anywhere else. But right here in our own backyard. Now this morning, a pretty dense marine layer will see another morning with decent onshore flow tomorrow. Thats going to cool you off on into your wednesday much like we saw.
