KRON KRON 4 News At 5pm July 12, 2024

Pelosi, the House Speaker pushing back questions about that now infamous trip to a San Francisco salon. Thanks for joining us tonight at 5 everybody im Vicki Liviakis said im grant lotus the covid controversy coming up today at an event about the impact of the pandemic on children kron fours Maureen Kelly. It was at the event joins us now live outside the salon. The speaker does it for us. Thats right vicki grant behind me is the salon the east along where the House Speaker went and got her hair done on monday inside. And that hair do is continue to be a hot topic. A press event where she was the headliner. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi came to the Mission Education Center Elementary school in San Franciscos noe valley to push the heroes act a 3 trillion dollars stimulus package in the wake of the pandemic money that would in part be used to help make schools safer for students and teachers to go back to the classroom but that message got blown away by the backlash to her now infamous blowout video of ms. Pelosi with wet hair and not wearing a mask inside the east salon on union street monday was released to fox news and that has sparked outrage because many san franciscans no indoor haircuts are still not allowed just yesterday hairdressers were okayed to cut hair outside. Today when asked about her hair appointment pelosi called the whole thing a setup i take responsibility for trusting. Other word of the neighborhood salon that ive been to over the years, many times and that tone when they said what were able to accommodate people one person at a time. And that we can set up that time i trusted that as it turns out it was a setup. So i take responsibility, 4 falling for a set up. But her patients for followup questions on the controversy war out quickly get any questions about the fact that people are dying the schools need to open i will not less. This subject take away from the fact that we have 180,000 plus people who have died from this fire, but she did respond as to why she was seen in the video not wearing a mask inside the salon i dont wear a mask and washing my hair. Do you wear a mask when youre washing your hair. I always have a mess. I always have a mess. From a for the people on on encountering, but for my family as well. But i dont wear when im getting my hair washed and that picture is one i just came out of the ball. Now no one answered the door here at the salon when i rang the bell, ive also reached out to the salon owner about pelosis allegation that her visit here on monday was a setup. I have yet to get a response. Reporting from San Francisco. Im Maureen Kelly kron 4 news. Thank you maureen whether Speaker Pelosi likes it or not this story certainly has sparked a lot of reaction indeed hit has inside bay area politics catherine heenan. Shes here with reaction now from our political analyst catharine well he she knew this was coming, but you know nancy pelosi did not want to talk about this today either did mayor london breed for that matter she was asked in a radio interview if the visit to this khloe salon amounts to a city violation will there be consequences the mayor did not answer directly instead talking about. Pelosi is fight against donald trump and what shes done for the city. Our political analyst they were happy to weigh in Tom Del Beccaro and michael yaki jockey is a former chief of staff for pelosi. The speakers leadership on the pandemic on issues of Racial Justice and her commitment to San Francisco above reproach theres no there there with this. We have a president trying to ignite a civil war for his own political gain. We have a president who is basically spending all his time on spreading false cures inciting racial division, supporting the rights of militia, tween conspiracy theories i like you and on and he spent more time on real world stuff not penny ante stuff like this maybe 180,000 americans would be dead. This is a big nothing. Between the blizzard of new regulations that seem to come on a constant basis and our Public Officials who seem not to want them to apply to them. Patients with covid is wearing thin and thats why what happened to pelosi so meaningful its not just that hes a high ranking official. Its the sense that leaders are not really listening to people and peoples patience is wearing thin. So whether you consider this to be a big nothing like michael or you considered an example of a leader not listening to people like tom probably this will not go away quite yet, especially since pelosi is calling it a setup vicki and grant. Thank you catherine our other top story tonight, a San Leandro Police officer has been charged in the shooting death of a black man at a walmart officer Jason Fletcher is accused now of voluntary manslaughter Alameda County District Attorney Nancy Omalley said today deadly force in this incident was not reasonable because Steven Taylor did not pose an immediate threat to the officer or anyone else in the walmart. Heres a look now at how the situation unfolded. Taylor was shot moments after that encounter fletcher had been responding to a call about an alleged shoplifter with a baseball bat when he arrived. He did not wait for backup and instead tried to grab the back from taylor, a struggle ensued eventually taylor fired his taser im sorry the officer fired his taser and then his gun this all happened in less than 40 seconds. The Alameda County District Attorney now explaining her reasoning. At the time of the shooting was not reasonable to conclude. Mister Steven Taylor pose an imminent threat of death, a Great Bodily Injury to either officer fletcher or to any one else in the store. Officer fletchers actions coupled with his failure to attempt other de escalation options render his use of deadly force and reasonable. California law changed this january to redefine when deadly force is allowed and that standard is now quote only when necessary before it was when quote reasonable. Jason fletcher is expected to be arraigned september 15th housing and homelessness still a major struggle for the state governor, newsome is eyeing a more permanent solution for shelter and that solution started because of the pandemic. When the pandemic hit newsoms administration secured 16,000 hotel rooms for project roomkey the governor is moving to spend 600 million to make those rooms permanent spaces with businesses shut down and many left unemployed, newsome noted millions of renters are protected from homelessness for now he says the bill he signed this week is different from federal efforts. Our protections are not impacted by those federal rules and regulations. Are protections go a little farther and then the federal government. The clock ran out on lawmakers as they try to pass other housingrelated proposals this year. The governor says hes open to calling the legislature back for a special session on pandemic related issues. And this just in to wayne the rock johnson and his family have been dealing with covid the 2 little children as well as the rock and his wife all testing positive. The hayward native just posted this video on instagram a short time ago asking everyone to stay disciplined as they plan their Labor Day Weekend and as they try to negotiate this whole pandemic hes told people to boost your moons immune system commit to wellness wear a mask protect your family, be strict about having people over to your house or gatherings. He did know that he and his family are on the other side of this but he said it has been quite a challenge the past couple weeks or so more on that as we learn more. And as weve been hearing that watch list that to determine of counties across the state could open its now a thing of the past its been replaced by up for tier colorcoded system you may have seen it. You have purple red orange and yellow purple is the worst that means cases are still widespread. Yellow best Case Scenario that is indicating that cases are minimal you see no yellow or orange in the bay area kron fours dan kerman has been speaking to county Health Officers about this sudden change. He joins us now live from San Francisco. With their reaction than just Something Else. Is Something Else that you see this is a map of the state of california most of it is in purple now San Francisco and red marine expects to come into the red next week at the earliest for the most part Health Officers say this is a positive step in the right direction, the other Health Officers we talked to say it also remains with some shortcomings. Reopening in california is now based in a for tier colorcoded system purple red orange and yellow with yellow meaning cases are minimal and purple meeting cases are widespread. As you see by this map most counties in the state are in the purple now moving up the ladder is based on 2 factors gauged over 3 week period. Number of new cases per day and the Positivity Rate and if youre if youre percent positivity of more than 8 of your tests are positive thats a thats a sign that you need to move back in the purple or more than 7 cases 400,000 per day is you know is higher than that number has also signed that would need to move back to the most restrictive category Marin County Health officer doctor matt willis believes the new framework. Is a step in the right direction that set off i think were going to have some more radiant process and that will protect our Business Owners and the tree is a whole from a larger key expense of opening and the closing of the reopening again. Counties that do more testing like San Francisco can have the rating adjusted for the better. And each color or tear indicates what can open. And while most counties remain in purple under this system things that were not allowed to open before can now be open. We are able to resume indoor air services say hair salons and barbershops can resume with indoor operations that sun improvements were also able to reopen our mall with 25 capacity so thats an improvement but solano countys Health Officer says moving from tear to tear. Well take more time restricting a full reopening and he fears that still penalizes those not causing the surge in the first place. These business sectors that are affected or not were having our ariel this is occurring around says are continuing to occur in peoples personal lives on the have gettogethers with family and usually at home or at a friends house and so nothing has changed there and yet were still punishing business sectors that are responsible for disease transmission. So there you have kind of a mixed bag in terms of review of this sort of thing and this plan going forward. We also talked to ucsf officials have been monitoring all this they think its a step in the right direction, but again. They warn labor day is coming up if theres anything the memorial day told us is that the state moving in the correct direction can quickly go the opposite direction of people dont stick to the behaviors that are mandated such as mask wearing and hand washing and not staying outside your social bubble. They say thats really whats important at least in the next couple of weeks live in San Francisco. Dan kerman kron 4 news all right dan and now to growing containment efforts on 3 major barry wildfires will start the north bay with the lnu complex sets at 74 containment now. More than 375,000 acres have burned. And the scu complex fires burning in the east and the south bays are currently sits at 72 containment with more than 390,000 acres burned and the czu complex thats in san mateo and santa cruz counties now up to 45 containment. After about 85,000 acres have burned there ed, as if there isnt enough to deal with amid the wildfire Recovery Efforts in the Santa Cruz Mountains some residents are being urged not to drink the water. Our rob fladeboe joins us now live from moscow. Thats right vicki this is happening in Boulder Creek where the fire destroyed a key Water Pipeline contamination of the water supply is possible so for now customers are being urged to drink only bottled water. Heres more. Isnt heavy duty water pipe are arriving in Boulder Creek. Were a do not drink order is in effect as a result of the czu lightning complex fire. These are pictures of whats left of an aboveground pipeline that was destroyed when the fire swept through the watershed on Ben Lomond Mountain owned by the san lorenzo valley Water District we have a 7 mile road Water Pipeline, highdensity polyethylene line. That crosses that watershed picks up water from several different surface water intakes. And brings that water into our treatment plant. A 100 of that pipeline was destroyed by fire. The pipe literally melted into the landscape the do not drink order issued amid possible contamination of benzene and other toxic resulting from the melted plastic, the scenario that arose following 2018 is paradise fire. We have a very positive results coming were not showing contamination yet. But its were still a ways away from lifting the the do drink and we dont want customers to the think were getting good samples that they can go back to using water they need to wait until we give the allclear the district is stockpiling and making deliveries of bottled water for the roughly 3100 connections impacted by the order. The new pipeline will likely be underground and since the fire also claimed some 4 million gallons of stored water. Customers are being urged to conserve water and reminded not to drink or boil their tap water. We dont recommend the water for. 4 other than you know like you know flushing the toilet in and they may be watering outside. But right now until we lift. Do not drink. We recommend bottled water. Now a little love less than a half of the 8,000 customers are impacted by this. Its hoped that the allclear will come before the evacuation orders are fully lifted for Boulder Creek live in Scotts Valley rob fladeboe kron 4 news. The current air quality still is not great as you can see to do all that smoke out there and then the particles are still in the air from all these wildfires, Justin Waldman joins us live in the newsroom now with an update on the air quality across the bay just seen. Old grant and vicki i dont know about you, but i miss seeing all those beautiful blue skies and were just kicking off fire season. So this could mean that smoky skies could be around for months. Containment is going up with those 3 major bay area wildfires but the smoky skies well be here throughout the weekend. I spoke with a meteorologist with the bay area air Quality Management district to find out what it will take to clear the skies. It got better containment is is the number one key. If we can get the fires under control. And that thats really the big he and i have more new fire starts and you know we might be out of this sooner rather than later. To see a really big change in the air the fires all need to be out completely and some fresh air nee
