KRON KRON 4 News At 5pm July 12, 2024

The worst air quality in the entire world believe it or not experts say it is actually worse today than yesterday look at this video this is what it looked like just hours ago pure hasan gray skies, according to purple air dot com. The particulate matter in the air around the San Francisco bay reach the 200 to 300 parts per million range which is considered very unhealthy. Heres a look at purple airs air quality map of bay area, including San Francisco, the east bay, the peninsula and the north bay are in that purple range that is the worst its considered unhealthy for everyone. But especially dangerous for people with prior Health Conditions as he had a little farther east and south the air quality gets a little bit better, but you have to really get outside of the immediate bay area out there in santa cruz mountains, its bad but not quite as bad even in the central valley. Lots of red and purple is out there. As we know the wildfires and weather conditions are combining to create this problem and even though the 3 large a lightning complex fires burning in the bay area are mostly under control. There are still a number of wildfires across the state as well as up and down the west coast and that is where the smoke we see in the bay area is coming from we want to show you an incident map by cal fire look at all those fires burning in california lot of fires out there and fire complexes were fires merged together. Fire crews are working to contain all of these those big red areas are the perimeters of the fires and thats how large they are thousands and thousands of fact are over. 3 million acres that have burned. Now look at the current air conditions out there, lets check in with our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow with the forecast the guys you know boy the air quality just so stagnant outside the winds. Not much of a breeze we cant get it going so thats the problem so now smoke that really moved in a couple of days ago, has now started to settle near the surface without anything to mix it out. Heres latest forecast, youll notice as we get in toward the weekend High Pressure begins to kick a little further. These thats a good sign we want a Little Movement thats what we call a rex block when you get a big dome like this developing on the west coast. These can last sometimes 14 days as long as 3 weeks now its just beginning to move their quality though i dont think we see much improvement on the way for tomorrow, maybe a little bit in spots but boy once you get the smoke here if you dont get enough when you just cant mix it out were seeing a lot of that smoke and weve got a combination of fog right along the immediate coastline, some dense fog out there and that is actually mixed with some of that smoke as well so the winds if we get these up to 20 maybe even 2530 Miles Per Hour. We could certainly start to make some of this out right now were not seeing that just a 13 Miles Per Hour in a San Francisco youve got a role 9 in boyle not enough to really mix out all that fog sore and smog so were going to see more of this in fact the forecast model showing you some of the winds overnight tonight were going to calm down i think tomorrow morning again very poor air quality all around the bay area will be spots, especially in the north bay maybe near the coastline. Some dense fog going to be difficult to see visibilitys down less than a quarter of a mile there is a promise though as we get toward maybe sunday afternoon a little stronger sea breeze so i think day were going to see some of this move out of the bay area lets the winds which direction to bring more smoker way i think we should see some more improvement by the end of the weekend. You do not in science. I hope you believe in observed evidence. Governor Gavin Newsome insisting that we must to do more to fight Climate Change as wildfires get worse every year in california has some of the states largest wildfires in history burned simultaneously state leaders are taking action in response downpours Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala joins us live now from sacramento with more ashley the governor did not mince words today. That we thought would materialize by midcentury on the front lines more than 14,000 california firefighters battled the blazes other states are coming in to try to contain the historic fires with west coast crews stretched thin newsome friday signed a new law giving inmate hand crews a path to becoming professional firefighters once theyre released from prison this goes into effect in january will give those prisoners hope of actually getting a job in the profession that theyve been trained as hazardous air quality chokes the state with millions of acres charred newsome not mincing his words about the trump administrations attempts to push back on californias environmental goals, the state has sued the administration 100 times the majority of those lawsuits are environment related and theyre leading. The charge of keeping you protected and keep you healthy and safe. And theyre in denial about Climate Change theyre not truly i think position to be the kind of leaders that we need. Now despite their ideological differences. The governor says hes not worried the white house will hold up emergency dollars for these disasters. He says he actually spoke to President Trump on the phone for about 30 minutes yesterday who seem committed to helping california and this time of need reporting live at the State Capitol Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. Thank you ashley in the north bay the lnu lightning complex fires now 95 contained but 5 people lost their lives it destroyed almost 1500 structures and burned more than 363,000 acres people with homes to return to have largely done so and now businesses are trying to get back on their feet but there remains a lot of uncertainty particularly for those in the winery business tonight kron fours dan kerman joins us from healdsburg to explain that part of the story dan. Well unlike the kincade fire which later in the fall, this fire here the walbridge fire near healdsburg. Burned now and as a result all of the grapes still on the vine harvest just getting underway now net creates a question whether any of these pieces of fruit or damaged due to the smoke. Hasta la cual winery is among many in Dry Creek Valley thats back open for outdoor tastings this after being shut down for several weeks to the walbridge fire burning in the hills a half mile from the property thats been in tough tough couple tough couple of with the fires part of the problem this time around is the grapes were still on the vine at the time of the walbridge fire and are only now being harvested as a result theyve had to reject some of the grapes to the high smoke content found plenty of others that remain good rain for it in. And were going to were going from an attorney and as i said well well see prior to bottling doesnt meet our quality standards and wont be will be bottles possible aqua winery makes only 5,000 cases a year. And any bump in the road as difficult as it is for most Small Businesses but even though fire season is just getting underway. They remain optimistic. Were booked solid for this for over 30 lot so. When i see that i look at how that gives me a good gauge and help people. Consumers the average human is adapting to the adversity that were faced with right now. The real story of resiliency here we can also tell you that for those who are not interested in coming into the winery they also started virtual tastings that this winery as well as several others in case, youre worried about. What it smells like in this area we can tell as far as the smell of smoke we are not smelling any here in healdsburg. Reporting live dan kerman kron 4 news lawyer, pretty lucky out there the end and we certainly are here in the east bay also bad air in Contra Costa County leading the Public Health department to issue a recommendation for people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Forcefully to go reports doctors say short term exposure will not likely lead to Permanent Health problems but if you have preexisting breathing problems the last place you should be right now is outside. Theres nothing easy about herding cattle on a normal clear and sunny day for moving up. So the property bill arnett says the job is even worse when the air is heavy, hard to breathe out here harnett and his crew made their way up Mount Diablo State Park were from jupiter summit elevated nearly 3,000 feet typically picturesque views of the bay area blanketed with smoke i anticipate that this is going to trigger a fair amount of visits to the respiratory Urgent Care Center Contra Costa Health Services Says air quality in all parts of the county has been measured at unhealthy levels as a result of smoke from the numerous fires burning throughout the state. John muir Health Urgent Care Specialist doctor franks chick says stay indoors unless you have no choice but to go outside you go go outside for. A walk or run. Which understandably is good for your health, but right now you might between more hard to result in good and remember clock face coverings are effective in helping prevent the spread of covid19 but not from inhaling wildfire smoke, its very when you when you can see it higher open. You dont smoke directly you can still effect in ways that you dont anticipate especially if youve got some kind of Underlying Health condition like ask severe allergies or even mike rains that could trigger and that can be triggered by something as simple as the smoke that were happening right now bofors still hit the links and driving rain, Jeff Buchanan fields, golf club in concord pete says he thought hed be worse you can really smell it relief. The notices in the air kind of almost feel as though you have to change or approach out. Im pretty bad. No matter which way of life probably best to wait until things clear up in Contra Costa County deleted all kron 4 news. Coming up has taken a while but finally complaints about an illegal dump site getting some attention from city hall in san jose why neighbors say that spot is a threat to Public Health and safety wildfires not only a big problem raging in california. The devastating toll. Theyre taking in oregon tonight plus a new study linking a higher risk of Covid Infection to dining indoors at restaurants what health as the Restaurant Industry tries to make a comeback with reopenings a new study is now linking a possible increase in the risk of Covid Infection to dining out a study by the cdc examines close contact exposures contributing to the spread of the virus and found that adults who tested positive for covid19 were twice as likely to have reported eating in a restaurant within 14 days of infection compared with those who tested negative. Restaurants meanwhile continue to try to slow the spread of the virus by implementing safety precautions starting on monday San Francisco is allowing several businesses open indoor and includes hotel rooms for tourists and that is a big deal for the Overall Economic health of the city kron fours ray kelly joins us now live from inside a suite at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel with what to expect up there on hill marine. Thats right and i am here in this week right now and i can tell you that its going to look a lot different i think for travelers used to this stay in hotels. One thing youll notice is theres a lack of magazines here theres no stationary left on the desk. Theres nothing in the mini bar when we go to the bedroom theres going to be no bathrobes slippers all of this is in order to keep this room easier to clean and help keep us safer. So the whole idea is that once you check into the room, you know has been sanitized and its been disinfected to the highest and the possible and we try and reduce the amount of interactions are going to have inside the room with the room service from many bar attendance, or anything like that so we removed all those opportunities so the guest is very safe once that checked in and has been cleaned before they got here pretty much the only person in room until they check out now the mark hopkins has been open nearly this entire pandemic first having rooms available for first responders. Here in San Francisco, then essential travelers and even fire evacuees, but its estimated that more than 50 of the citys hotel have been forced to shutter during this pandemic including the policy see here. And this is a huge impact not just on the thousands of workers that have been laid off or furloughed but also the businesses that rely on tourism its going to be a slow recovery and we understand that. But having the ability to be able to welcome guests and there are hotels the same way the rest of the state of california is is important to our industry. I think as people when they come into this city. Theyre helping the person thats working in the hotel. Theyre helping the the Small Business owners around the hotels. All of that as people start to travel and come into our city. Were just really important to remember and we would think people that are. Now in terms of that slow recovery. They are expecting to see people come in from around the state first as well as locals looking to indulge in a staycation. And so you know where it is definitely going to be a slow recovery here. The mark hopkins for example, they are expected to only operate at about 40 capacity thats because right now there are no conventions. Theres no large events that would draw in tourists and theres simply the lack of International Tourism reporting from San Francisco in morning kelly. Kron 4 news all right maureen thank you for that report in San Francisco here is a list of the Indoor Services that can reopen starting monday hair salons barber shops and gyms can reopen indoors at limited capacity and outdoor family entertainment, including many golf and go carts and then the following week of september 21st indoor museums and in class learning from kindergarten to 6th grade can return with limited capacity and a safety plan in place and then by the end of september San Franciscos goal is to allow 25 capacity at indoor places of worship. And to san jose now where it looks like complaints about a longfestering illegal dump site will finally see some action from city hall kron fours rob fladeboe joins us now live from that site besides being disgusting neighbors say its a threat to Public Health and safety. Thats right ken and pam im down off monterey road in our south san jose near Bailey Avenue neighbors tonight are cautiously optimistic that what they say is a case of extreme blight may soon be cleaned up. Lets take a closer look. What began as an accumulation of tarps and trash associated with the homeless camps has become an eyesore here between the Railroad Tracks in monterey road in south san jose. The quarter mile long trashy just north of Bailey Avenue is by far the largest illegal dump site in the county. Heading up a group of neighbors demanding some action news david net meyer this is sad for us and its very. Discouraging for people that have to drive down monterey road every day and they had to drive past this dump site that meyer says he has personally witnesse the Illegal Dumping along with bags of household garbage. There are piles of construction waste fluorescent light bulbs mattresses and appliances abandoned vehicles, hundreds of tires. Painter and other toxic waste. Residents say their complaints have been met with promises but no action you know we reach out to them and they keep saying its. Union pacifics problem, its covid19 our hands are tied in. Were looking for is we want to plan how theyre going to clean this up and how theyre going to sure that this doesnt continue to be a dump site meyer was surprised but remains been learning today that the city Union Pacific open Space Authority and private Property Owners have come to terms on an action plan to clean up the mess.
