KRON KRON 4 News At 5pm July 12, 2024

The hazy us but none are looking all too great and everybody has these apps on their phones. Now right a look at the air quality. And how it is around the bay area you see it is fairly uniform. This thats updated in real time, its purple air shows the amount of particulate matter in the air the dark purple. Represents the worst air that dark red is only slightly better and then the lighter shades or even better, but we dont have that much see a Little Orange and yellow well near ukiah almost but the bay area pretty red at least were not purple. Like parts of sacramento, all the way up into portland that is really bad right now, but the air we have its considered dangerous for all sensitive groups and for the general population. If theyre exposed for too long and by the way general. Sensitive groups that includes kids. The elderly and people with heart and lung disease called for chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow joins us now. Lawrence when can we expect some relief from the smoke in the air will finally i think as we get toward the latter part of this week well get a cold front thats coming through and that should be just enough to mix it out but maybe not forever explain more on that just a moment outside though looking out walnut creek all that haze out there right now and all that smoke, sitting over head is that poor air quality that a little bit better today. It was worse over the weekend today we started to notice a change of sea breeze in the pickup around the bay area and that means some changes on the way still tomorrow the forecast is for unhealthy air all around the bay area from the north bay, the south bay, the coast and the valleys just staying on health the outside i think especially in the Morning Hours and then in the afternoon that sea breeze will develop now this is the front that were looking at doesnt look like much and usually they are at this time of year most that energy going to head 7 northwest are going to get much needed rain up there should help for the firefighters in those areas to and were going to get clipped by this i think maybe some rain in the far Northern California but more importantly for the bay area its going to ramp up that sea breeze that means that on shore flow, those winds going to be picking up as we head to the middle of the week and thats what we should start seeing some better air quality all around we saw that a little bit today i think improving air quality as we head throughout the week winds now at 13 Miles Per Hour in the San Francisco, 14 in oakland 12 in the benicia 10 in the fairfield hoping to ramp these up it might get some 20 plus mile an hour winds. We get some wins over that we should start to see some Rapid Improvement tonight though again its going to be a long night, those winds start to calm down as a call down then all the blues start to settle in tomorrow afternoon. The winds begin to pick up again but those winds should strengthen throughout the week thing better air quality as we head toward the middle of guys. All right, thank you cant come soon if you feel like weve been dealing with this suffocating smoke for far too long. Youre not alone. This is the 28th straight day weve had a spare the air alert. Thats right this doubles the previous record of 14 days in a row. Setback in the 28 in 2018 during the camp fire. Kron fours dan kerman has been talking to people to see how theyre coping with all of this and he joins us now live from walnut creek dan. Well people have had it as you mention worth day 28 and that spare the air alert has been extended another couple of days we will have 29 tomorrow. We will have a spare the air days 30 on wednesday to possibly improve still the folks we talked to here are pretty much over it. No matter which direction you look from downtown walnut creek the skies have a gray smoky haze you can definitely feel and you can see it in the backyard, its pretty sad. How mueller furnitures cover ashes time ahead of us and much s. A for most kids because they have to be indoors island time despite the bad air quality the streets were not empty somewhere out shopping others were having lunch. I mean id rather be out living my life then too. The watching other people do it on tv. But most say theyre spending as little time out as possible definitely going out less just its kind of toxic in the air dont want to be out more than 92 just grabbing some food right now actually in heading back as far as when this blanket of smoke will go away. Air quality Officials Say coastal winds may push the smoke east. Give us a break thursday and friday. But it will be short lived. We do think this weekend the winds will shift to a wind coming from the north. It will bring smoke down from the august fire for example that is the largest fire in california history around mendocino theres also one up in plumas you know there and then theres all that smoke us up in oregon and news that this unhealthy air could continue to linger even longer. Is not what people want to hear. I thought it would offend contained a little more by now but i hopefully it clears up pretty soon. I hope it does we just better hope we can. Definitely get some relief here soon. We need a break. Theyre quality officials also remind people not to be lulled into a false sense of security just because you dont smell smoke, doesnt mean the air is healthy live in walnut creek dan kerman kron 4 news. Ok thank you dan while the hazy skies from wildfire smoke is certainly negatively affecting us that actually helping firefighters fight the fire thats right Officials Say smoke from fires around the state to block the sun reducing temperatures and raising humidity. The change in the weather helped firefighters in battling the fires but despite the progress theres concern that the death toll may rise as crews reach devastated areas nearly 17,000 firefighters across the state are working to contain 29 major wildfires burning right now in california. So far more than 3 million acres have burned this fire season at least 35 people have died more are missing from california all the way up to Washington State dozens of wildfires have destroyed neighborhoods, leaving nothing but charred rubble and burned out cars, forcing 10s of thousands of people to evacuate. Other news now in today on the campaign trail President Trump made a pit stop in california for a briefing on the states historic wildfire season. Capitol Bureau Reporter Ashley Zavala explains how the briefing winds between the president and the governor actually. Well branson eyes, the president s primary reason for coming here was to get an update from state officials on the wildfire situation here and that update included governor Gavin Newsome for 2 people who constantly criticize each other in public. The way they interacted today and over this topic, especially is not what you would expect. Air force one touched down in a smoky Sacramento County monday before his briefing with state Emergency Management leaders, President Trump reiterating to reporters his concerns with californias Forest Management i think this is more of a management situation. In other countries you go to other countries in europe, in a roundtable discussion inside cal fires hangar governor newsome thank the president for the approval of 14 firefighting grants and the federal Emergency Declaration as fires scorch millions of acres across the state knew something knowledge more work needs to be done with managing california wetlands, the majority of which are owned by the federal government but in a respectful exchange the governor told the president the fires are result of the Climate Crisis please respect and i know you do. The difference of opinion out here as it relates to this fundamental issue on the issue of Climate Change absolutely appreciate that the president commstting to strengthening the state and federal partnership to double down on vegetation management. But without mention of Climate Change were working on that very hard together and. I think were totally in sync i really think were totally in sync. Now following his 2 hour trip here the president left for a Campaign Event in phoenix reporting live in Sacramento County Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. Thank you for that ashley now take a look at this new video from just hours ago. President trumps visit to sacramento was met with protesters today in the video you can see one of the protesters jumping on a chp car. That officer kept driving knocking the protester onto the street. Its not clear how badly that person was hurt. But certainly a tense scene in sacramento today. Today was the first day thousands of businesses in San Francisco were allowed to open inside after being shut down during the pandemic many of these places have been closed for almost 6 months member on the long hair. Well the reopening saying included nair nail and hair salons barbershops gyms and some other personal services. Nurse are relieved and happy to be back up and running. Ready we feel like this was that this is safer for us to be in the salon in a controlled environment. Then out out and about and going to peoples homes. There are obviously lots of rules for instance, everyone has to wear masks in salons and barbershops and employees can service just one client at a time. Anyone else in the shop needs to maintain physical distance. Starting today more vehicle based gatherings will be allowed in an east bay county. Thats because an updated health order is not only more inclusive. It also allows for participation of twice as many vehicles kron fours Haaziq Madyun has details. The name of jesus. And the people of the Alameda County Public Health department updated covid19 order for vehicle based gatherings now permits live performances, including entertainment events like musicals theatrical in artistic performances, lectures presentations movie showings as well as religious and cultural ceremonies. The updated order also allows for events to have double the amount of vehicles and opened it from 200 to 400 cars in the parking lot i think it would be great. Although the Previous Health order allowed outdoor vehicle base Church Services lifting the 200 vehicle limit restriction is more than welcome news as Bishop Bob Jackson and acts full Gospel Church in oakland weve been on the parking lot weve been having Holy Communion services on for sunday. And it works out pretty well we have the and by then the music with the cars people in the cars and all they led the praise like we always do what were just outside according to the health order occupants of the vehicle must be from the same household and must remain in the vehicle during the event they stay in the cause and for the most part they have the windows down they have to have their masks on. Although the updated order does not allow acts gospel to return to indoor Church Services like the one you see here. Looking on the bright side Bishop Jackson says now that neighborhood it involved with the services with this because the pa system that we is so powerful that pumps. I guess you can hear probably 2 or 3 blocks down the street, so now everybody sing in church on sunday morning and the whole neighborhood and thats the part life. Has it made you kron 4 news. Im here on old omen and road in san jose behind me here you see a classic example of Illegal Dumping you see this all over town in fact a neighbor here tells me that was just one mattress here on friday night now there are 2 and some other trash. The city says that unless these things get cleaned up right away the only get bigger and the only way to get them all cleaned up is by increasing the budget. Heres more. This is one of some 200 trash hot spots across the city of san jose. A lot of it is associated with homeless camps like this chronic encampment near story road and highway one oh one much of it is the result of Illegal Dumping this huge dump site in monterey road along the Union Pacific Railroad Tracks is a quarter mile long. Crews are picking up 45 tons of trash every week across town. The city is losing the battle against blight said mayor sam liccardo during a virtual News Conference in this is. And City Council Member surgio jimenez dev la nba, proposing a tripling of the budget for cleaning up the mess. Another 3 Million Dollars from the general fund would pay for more dumpsters more crews outreach and enforcement, the Illegal Dumping of appliances is up 160 . Most of it is due to a beautiful i san joses Olympia Williams says is covid cleaning time. If people are buying these sofas and appliances, theyre looking for ways to get rid of them and thats kind of been the challenge to people dont disposed of appropriately enough on the street or in and or in an encampment unfortunately the city the Union Pacific open Space Authority and private Property Owners have come to terms on a plan to clean up the moderator roadside by years end. If the extra money is approved there will also be an emphasis on cleaning up illegal dump sites as soon as they are discovered. More dumpsters would be deployed to homeless camps beyond that a lot of the mess is just plain litter. Oakland road is another one of those hot spots with a blight has been building up for months, theres a lot were grappling with but what we know is that theres more we can do. And theres more were going to do and weeks ahead. Now the mayor and his allies on this will present their proposal to the City Council Next Week if approved out were told that there will be more crews more dumpsters on the street. Each for the rest of the year. Thank you rob, whether time now as we get a check of the 4 zone forecast take a live look here we go again, San Francisco. Yes that that is San Francisco, usually we see the skyline obviously not today that that haze unrelenting absolutely absolutely and this is this is what were breathing in. Kron fours Lawrence Karnow standing by with a look at how things are going to be with our forecast lawrence yeah we really need a win to get go weve been under High Pressure and as you sit in that big dome sometimes get very stagnant them easier is not moving around much. And you get some smoke thats already settled in you cant mix it out. And what were finally starting to see that breeze you can see the wind begin to blow around just a bit this. The flag is the way theyre up toward the Golden Gate Bridge thats a good sign. And i think were got were going to expect in the increasing sea breeze over the next couple days, but it is very easy looking toward the east bay hills this coming from a berkeley cam looking back out over the bay where that smoke just kind of settled in so as you can imagine were all in red right now unhealthy air quality all around the bay area from the north bay, the south bay even along the coastline, weakening usually expect to see some pretty fresh air but smoke extends all the way out to not toward the coast. But its actually been blown all the way on the pacific so sea breeze comes in but its still carrying some of the smoke toward the coastline now by tomorrow again this were expecting throughout the bay area covered in red once again unhealthy air quality all around the bay area just about everywhere you go. But theres a sign of some hope now is weve got a cold front. Finally thats making its way toward the california coastline you see right here not expecting this to be a big rainmaker for us well see some rain up in the pacific northwest, some getting a little bit closer to
