KRON KRON 4 News At 6am July 12, 2024

Now offer that same improvement in air quality to all of us across the bay. There are going to be some visibility issues this morning as we do see fog pushing it past the day most of it sitting right above us so bridges should be better that our upper elevations like our east bay hills will be although the golden gate is pretty socked in this morning from that dense fog as for air quality look at this improvement if youre not seeing a shade of yellow orange or red on the map its because youre good or very close to good which is something that you will want to step outside and enjoy of moderate conditions do remain in just a couple of pockets in yellow, but even that a huge step up from where we have been a good day to get outside and enjoy a nice brisk morning walk with steady winds from the coast you will want to put a light jacket on as you venture out there 50s and 60s for your current temperatures. Robin. Thank you john were checking in on the bay bridge as traffic is recovering from a crash. We had a minor accident out near Treasure Island, so its heavier now into San Francisco with your backup growing beyond 8. 80 beyond west grand now its through the bottom of the maze so 10 minutes to make it in and that drive times going continue to increase. We have a new trouble spot in pleasanton 5 in the seeing the injury crash blocks the right lane of the offramp that backup is growing its beyond santa rita almost out to el charro 15 minutes and growing because of that new crash from vasco to the dublin interchange darya james thanks a lot rob, and its 6 02 and we have breaking news out of the south bay where 2 people were killed and 3 injured in a shooting in san jose that happened just a few blocks away actually from the campus of San Jose State University kron fours will tran joining us live there. With the latest on what we know this morning will. And james that happen 8 hours ago and it is still very much an active scene in fact let me step out of the way and i can show you whats going on San Jose State University is just on the other side. Of the crime scene so were just a few blocks from san jose state located 8th and margaret you can see evidence markers on the ground detectives coming in going at this time it looks like theyre focusing on that white car there and also the building to its left with those lights on that White Building. Heres video of the scene this all went down at around 10 oclock last night we do know that 3 people or in the hospital at this particular time we dont know their conditions. Unfortunately 2 people were shot and they died at the scene here in fact their bodies remain here. So the Coroners Office they have not come here yet to remove the body to make a positive identification to let family members now as far as a motive behind this they dont know at this time theyre hoping to talk to witnesses this happened at a time when a lot of people were inside their homes and still awake. Heres reaction from one of the neighbors. It sucks because its in our neighborhood. This is not the type of community we want to live you know this is not the example we want to separate kids like its been a different vibe ever i mean things have been online and not in person theres not as many students around and theres kind of just more people looking for trouble. So you heard that particular gentleman talk about online classes. They dont know if this has any connection to San Jose State University or any school for that particular matter. We do know that it happened of course at night time when there were no classes as far as the sky description of the shooter or shooters they simply dont have any at this particular time and again they have no motive behind why 5 people were shot. All right, thank you very much well time now is 6 04 and another big story this morning just a couple days after the world saw a record oneday rise in covid cases, californias infection rate is falling in today marin county gets to move into a new phase yet more businesses can reopen indoors. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson on that story for us again live from Murray County sarah. James darya as you know theres been some delays some setbacks from Warren County and now theyre finally heading into tier 2. A lot of businesses will be excited to hear that they can reopen for Indoor Services take a look at this map so we can show you exactly what parts of the bay area are also in tier 2. And its the pink areas on your screen in a sea of purple this tier is the substantial risk category compared to tier one which is widespread in the states color coded terror system, the only other counties in tier 2 are napa San Francisco and santa clara counties. Moving into tier 2 means these businesses can reopen indoors, including Retail Stores indoor malls at 50 capacity, restaurants museums, places of worship can reopen at 25 capacity and certain personal Care Services like skin care Hair Nail Services can be back inside gyms can reopen to like weve learned from San Francisco. Its only at 10 for those gyms movie theaters are going to be opening their doors cant believe it 25 capacity we talked with one movie buff who cant wait to watch a movie actually on the big screen. I would if they said it and then we have the plan here we get free spirit taking every month in the effort is to come here but and this is going to govern and sudden but order to fix it become that. Of course well have to see how this goes with the coronavirus cases if a county remains on in in tier 2 for 2 weeks then schools can reopen without that whole application process and if that occurs then it could be as soon as september 29th former in county, reporting live in marin county Sarah Stinson kron 4 news. All right, thanks. A lot sarah. On the story for you this morning, the federal government has rolled out plans to make covid19 vaccines free for all americans in a report to Congress Federal Health Agency officials outlined complex plans for a Vaccination Campaign to begin gradually in january or possibly later this year, but eventually the program will expand to reach any americans who want the vaccine for most people will need at least 2 doses 21 to 28 days apart, and theyll have to come from the same drug maker there could be several vaccines from different manufacturers. That are approved and available. So initially there may be a limited supply of vaccines. The focus will be on protecting healthcare workers first and other essential employees as well and people in vulnerable groups a second and 3rd phase then would expand vaccinations to the entire country. The covid19 case numbers continue to fall across california fact the state was officially removed from new york, new jersey and connecticut mandatory 14 day quarantine list for travelers. California was first added that the list back in june. The statewide Positivity Rate is also down to 3. 6 over the last 2 weeks and an average rate of just 7. 7 cases per 100,000 people and you can see the graph here shows we are way down from the peak earlier this summer. As for the local numbers that were tracking so far the state has recorded more than 768,000 cases with more than 14,000 deaths and across the bay area specifically we have more than 93,000 confirmed cases with more than 1200 people dying from covid19 a new ucsf study could help open up businesses that have been closed because of the pandemic ucsf doctors created a covid. Contact tracing app called covid seeker doctors are looking now for people who have tested positive for coronavirus and for people who have ever had the virus to sign up for the app. Were further trying to do here is to understand you know when and where people might have been you know infected to be able to develop no more preventative measures to those areas near with this type of we potentially can capture it in real time and be able to know i doubt those policies and you know based on on these patterns of transmission over. And get this if they get enough participants. They think they can predict whats going to happen in terms of the infection rates. We have directions on how you can sign up for that app on our website at kron 4 dot com. 6 09 right now lets get to the breaking news, which is the hurricane Hurricane Sally has made landfall as a category 2 on the Florida Panhandle and south amul alabama coast about a 150,000 homes and businesses have no electricity right now Colleen Peterson is in alabama with a look. Right now im in the eye wall of sally and daphne central Baldwin County were getting some stronger wind gusts exceeding over 90 Miles Per Hour here on the west side of the wall so the rain really wrapping from the northeast. I went here and then walking in. Back down to prom when guys and this is the worst hours central Baldwin County but this is a slowmoving storm so the impacts we can feel here over the next few hours just take a look around me. You see a lot of the debris already in the some lands that have fallen off of many trees a lot of storm reports already of trees blocking roadways and even into some but we will be able to and to do its a where rescue crews can go to is also a concern as well reporting here in the eye wall of sally im meteorologist collin peterson. Well still ahead new testing site is opening in berkeley after the break were going to play in how the city has managed to keep positive coronavirus cases low during this pandemic. Plus more than 2 dozen arrests for drugs guns and violence will tell you why the federal and local Law Enforcement says that the east bay is safer after a major gangbusters and after the break the latest on the wildfires burning across california and oregon will update john and as we still do see wildfires burning here across the state at least air quality has improved for the bay we are looking at good air quality today. So a nice one to step outside. Your forecast ahead. And your trip into San Francisco is getting heavier 80 west is recovering from a crash. So now youre backed up all the way through the maze all check that backed up through the bottom of the maze onto all approaches 12 minutes i welcome back it is 6. 14 right now and you can. Right you notice the i did yesterday on you john were talking yesterday said one thing i miss is to go outside just breathe deeply and not be terrified. Was the first day i felt like i could do that right yesterday got out there and my voice immediately cleared up by hardly had one on monday felt like. But i think all of us have enjoyed stepping outside yesterday a little less worries about what were breathing in and today you can do that again because guess what air quality is even better for your wednesday ahead of us we are seeing fog at sfo that is not smoke, none in there whatsoever because sfo is one of our good areas. If youre not seeing a color on this map and its just looking like normal satellite terrain as because youre good or very very close to normal only a couple pockets of moderate yellow you look at orange and red and there still is plenty of that for the interior valleys of the towards the Sierra Nevada and then down along the Central Coast of some of our neighbors are still in the midst of some less than ideal conditions. But back here at home we are breathing a sigh of relief today and a clean sigh of relief at that. One of the reasons that has been so much cleaner than the past few days as weve seen this steady onshore breeze, pushing it along side of this frontal boundary that has been sitting pretty steady right along the coastline. This is just clean the air for a couple of days now and doing so rather swiftly will continue to see good air quality days into tomorrow and friday and saturday that wind begins to relax that sets us up for sunday with an offshore breeze that is likely to push some smoke back into the bay. So id say go ahead step outside these next few days enjoy the study sea breeze that is cleaning our air quality out as conditions will be our best today tomorrow and especially into friday. Todays daytime highs will be in the 60s and 70s for coastal spots, a pleasant day at the coast do expect fog to linger right along the immediate shoreline though, elsewhere in the bay and abundantly sunny and blue afternoon and greater quality for getting outside and finally stretching those legs maybe getting a jog and not so much worrying about the Hazardous Conditions you would be breathing in as for daytime highs in the north bay, some of our hottest but no 90s vacaville getting close at 89 fairfield 88. Well santa rosa through center fell all in the 80s as well. Tomorrow and friday temperatures will be a touch cooler for inland spots as i mentioned these are your best days for venturing outside saturday should hold up pretty well as well, but with that offshore flow kicking back in on sunday thats going to push smoke from the Sierra Nevada back out our direction so do watch for resurgence of smoke and haze. Robin. All right. Thank you john lets check in on the traffic because its getting busier by the minute starting off at the bay bridge 80 wesson to San Francisco. Its recovering from a crash that was up near Treasure Island its gone, but that delay from the crash mixed and with the slow traffic that was already there at the toll plaza so now were just packed its already backed up through the bottom of the maze and once again the crash is gone, heres 92 a little busy for you leaving hayward west of the san mateo bridge toll plaza that crowd is mainly on the flat section 13 minutes to the peninsula. On your approach to 92 headsup for crashes is 80 south and 92 in hayward just getting word of a new accident there blocking the right lane so crews are dealing with that its adding to your backup on the minutes and we have one in pleasanton 5 in the west and haas see in the year right lane blocked that backup also growing spilling well beyond el charro so its getting busy out there folks make sure you leave a little early because we have some problems in the way james. All right, thank you very much robin now to our wildfire coverage. The creek fire burning in Fresno County has now burned more than 220,000 acres. Its currently 80 contained as you can see with the graphic there off to the right hand side and then down the list you see the other major wildfires burning right now in the state including the august complex fire in mendocino and humboldt county. We have the north complex fires in butte county and the eldorado fire burning in riverside county. And we also the map showing all of the fires burning across the state right now and there are still a large number of them you can see all the icons there across the golden state. More than 3 million acres burned so far with more than 4200 structures destroyed at least 35 people have also died. Now as for the wildfires burning closer to home. We have updated containment numbers for you and theyre getting pretty close to full containment the lnu complex fires in the north bay is 98 contained as is the scu complex fires in the east and south bay, so both of those fires just about fully surrounded the czu complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties is at 93 containment and last on the list there you see the woodward fire in Point Reyes National seashore in marin county its now 95 contained the destructive fire season in california is now pushing some families to consider leaving where theyve called home for decades. Whats left right there of john prater was home, 35 years, he lived in vacaville and its reduced to rubble and dust. Like so many of his neighbors and his wife had to run from the hennessy fire in the middle of the night. And he says it is just devastating that nothing is left but a few dishes. His home was insured but he says hes not going to rebuild. Probably not the me just go and buy a house and i used to be general i can work that not it is. Theres really hard so. Weve got to move on. And its not just the work. Hes just worried he says very bills there be another fire to threaten his home and he doesnt want to deal with it anymore. Firefighters in oregon are battling fires there just south of portland crews are trying to get a handle on the beach the creek fire mike lowe takes a look at that. And good morning, the vast destruction left behind by these fast moving wildfires is evident to see and its not hard to imagine just how frightening it must have when the flames were actually moving through. If you woke up and saw a wall. The flames were burning completely over the roads. The crackling flames consumed fields trees and eventually homes in the fishermans Bend Community alliance tracy bright his wife and daughter scrambled to get to safety in a panic hurry left with the shirt on my back and and the slippers on my feet. His house is Still Standing hes just returning to check on the property and paxon was centrals like were still in the evacuation zone were just over the line. So we will not be staying there tonight. Many of his neighbors were not so lucky, one of them is brad needham who returns to his lions home to collect the only possession that remains im pulling my trailer out to a good take it to you. The ix o we can limit. His home was destroyed when a wall of flames raged through the canyon area where he lives on the North Santiam river our house is gone burned to the ground in the long journey to contain the raging wildfires. Yeah thats the front right there. A single footprint stands out one of the firefighters that fought the back. It was so hot his boat caught fire and he stepped on the grass and actually burn and its exact footprint. And we really
