Environment. It is with us. Even the president , as protected as he seems to be, he is vulnerable and susceptible. We hope he will be okay, but at this point there is no guarantee , and we all need to take this as a reminder that the pandemic is still very much a part of our lives. We have made a lot of progress here in the bay area, but he it is definitely too early to relax practices. This is a reminder of what happens if we are not 100 careful. Are you at all familiar with Walter Reed Medical Center . Do you know what their specialty is . It is a general hospital. Is serves all sorts of means. It is highly informed by physicians who are working at the National Institute for health and has access to some of the best minds and some of the most recent innovations in therapy. I think that is an encouraging sign that he will have access to a very High Standard of care. Obviously, there are a lot of people who are working very hard right now to make sure the president stays as well as he can. If youre just joining us, we are brave following breaking news that President Donald Trump will be hospitalized at Walter Reed NationalMedical Center and will remain there for several days. This is coming about 15 hours after the president has tested positive for coronavirus. Become first lady also tested positive. The live pictures were looking at now are of the white house. We understand the president will be flown aboard his marine one helicopter to that hospital where it is routine for president s to travel that way. It is about eight miles away, a pretty quick trip. We understand from the white house the president remains in good spirits. He has mild symptoms and has been working throughout the day, and that the president is going to remain at Walter Reed Hospital for several days and be able to continue on with his work. We are talking now with dr. Matt willis with the Marin County Health department to try to understand more about the diagnosis and what the next steps are. Obviously, this has big implications for the election. It has big implications for our national security. This has big implications for where we stand as a country with the coronavirus. Again, just to circle back, because we do have new viewers joining us here at 3 00, the president is taking this antibody cocktail. Would that be something that will continue on at the hospital . Is that something you just take ones as one does and try to see if it helps the virus levels and symptoms . Or do you continually get it . This is a new therapy. His doctors at National Institutes of health and Walter Reed Medical Center will be determining what the best course is. I think in many of these cases when youre using a therapy that has just been introduced, there is a lot of administration and watching for the potential side effects, potential benefits, and then determining what the subsequent course might be. I think those are questions that will be answered over the course of his treatment. There are other treatments that will also be considered depending on his course of illness. Were still very early in this. He was just diagnosed and is in the very early stages of what seem to be mild symptoms, which is not uncommon. At least 30 of people who are affected develop mild symptoms and only keep mild symptoms. It never progresses beyond that. The hope is that this would be his course. Of course, he is getting special attention and getting remedies that wouldnt necessarily be available or used for others at this level of illness. I think actually it is out of an abundance of caution and they are doing everything they can to keep them as well as they can. What does it say about his condition or how sticky is that this soon after getting a positive test, having symptoms, that he is going to the hospital . I think it says more about the fact that he is the president , and we really want to make sure he is managed and monitored as weekly as possible then necessarily about this particular illness or his age. Not every person who is diagnosed with covid19 and develops mild symptoms is makes a lot of sense in this particular case given how important this is that he stay healthy at this time, that they monitor him in that setting. I wouldnt necessarily see the fact that he is been hospitalized at this point as a sign of the severity of the illness so much as the context. Doctor matt willis with the Marin County Health department. Think you for joining us. To recap for any viewers just joining right now, President Donald Trump will spend a few days at a Military Hospital after he has been diagnosed with covid19. This is according to the white house. We are looking at live pictures of the white house. We understand the president will be walking out and boarding marine one, the helicopter, and taking that quick trip over to Walter Reed Hospital in bethesda maryland where he will spend the next several days being treated for coronavirus. We understand that his symptoms are mild, he is fatigued but a good spirits. He has a fever but will remain at the hospital under doctors care for several days. But he is well enough to continue on with his president ial duties, and there has been no transfer power over to Vice President mike pence. Also, the first lady has been diagnosed with coronavirus. I am sure you have heard that by now. Her symptoms, according to the physician to the president , she has a mild cough and a headache, but the rest of the first family is well and they have all tested negative for coronavirus. This virus has killed more than 205,000 americans, and has now reached the highest levels of us government. Catherine hedin is also with us now with more on the breaking news coverage. She will pick it up from here. Professor david mcewan is joining us again. The chair of the Political Science department at sonoma state university. We talked three hours ago and we talked three hours ago anc mild symptoms and the understanding was that the president was resting comfortably at the white house and would likely stay put for a while. That is all changing. What is your read on what we are hearing . If you think about it, today what we have heard is we have heard from kylie mauk and any, the White House Press secretary, we have heard from larry kudlow, the top Economic Advisor who has seen the president today, we heard from the chief of staff, mark meadows, and from the president s doctor. We have not heard or had an official White House Briefing about the situation. And what the Situation Requires is a greater deal of transparency from the white house. That should be coming in short order. So far that is in schedule. That is an important component. If they are moving the president for precautionary reasons to walter reed because they have a better medical facility than what you have the white house, that is an important development. There are also conflicting reports about whether the symptoms are mild or moderate. All of that portends the idea that he will continue his duties, but nonetheless, the official White House Briefing has not been forthcoming and that needs to be on the table. I am getting an echo, but i can hear you. There appears to be a lot of focus on making the point that the president is still in power, that he will be able to walk to the helicopter. How important is it for that notion that the president is doing okay, dont worry. You nailed it because this is a president where optics matter more than anything else. The portrayal of this president is strong as someone who is directing from a place of strength. It is hugely important in terms of how they portrayed themselves. The president walking to marine one, the president perhaps even maybe waving or taking if you questions or whatever that looks like in terms of portraying positive optics. That is a huge component of this white house. If you have a president who has flaunted the mask or try to betray that they could hold large rallies, all of that dynamic has changed in the last 12 to 15 hours. Events are moving fast. It is the best laid plans from the white house, from the campaign, whatever that looks like in the midst of an election, all of that can decide. Because events like this overtake the best laid plans. That is why the white house has the duty to put forth an official white 1kqnwmok[cokcho mild or walking to gccmarine one. ce i agree. Hea as well uprofessor that mild a symptoms, 5 moderate symptoms u is struggling nwith a fever, hi wstruggling with the cost. We really dont know. You suggested earlier this is not necessarily a white house known for its transparency. Your left wondering what we are not hearing. Thats right. What you want is the white house to do better, and you want this administration to do better. This is not a partisan thing. It is not a partisan bias. It is not a partisan attack. This is an about electoral politics. Bout the leader of the free world and the white house staff obligation and the white house, those that are leading the white house, to get in front of this and explained to the press what is happening on behalf of the american people. It is a very serious issue. A very serious illness. This is a very serious moment for the country. That is hugely important. It affects everything that goes on from what happens in the workplace to what happens in the markets to how people are casting ballots in the midst of an election with this great deal of uncertainty. The white house has to do better. One way they can do better is to be more transparent, more cooperative, better communication. Putting larry kudlow out there is helpful, putting mark meadows out there is helpful, spinning what is going on is much less helpful. Earlier we were hearing that there is a possibility the president will speak to the american public. I think it will be interesting oxeuvzxtaq781fr that happens, what kind of tone , and we discussed this earlier, what should he say . What should we be able to hear if there is a change in tone . We want to see and hear from the president about reassuring about his own health, reassuring his commitment to do the job the white house is talking about, that he can manage from walter reed over the next couple of days. The Vice President is at the naval observatory. The Vice President several residence in washington d. C. There also in communication with Different Levels of government, portraying they have continuity of government, they have a plan, that they have worked through this. The president s job is to reassure and also reassess his own situation. That will be helpful for the country itself. He has a job and obligation here that is not partisan. That has been the difficulty of this white house and this particular individual. They are very good about dividing us. Now is the moment to unite us, and can you do that . You saw from his opponent earlier today, joe biden, that he wished the family well. He understands this is a uniting moment for the country. And you step up to the moment or are you going to have a partisan divide . That is the difficulty. This is where the responsibility extends even beyond the white house to the press corps itself for doing its job in a strong way on behalf of the american people. Joe biden saying earlier that this cannot be a partisan moment. It must be an american moment. We have to come together as a nation. We have to stand back and hope we see some of that, including some level of public empathy regardless of what your politics are. I think it will be interesting to watch not only the tone of what is coming out of the white house or what we are hearing from the president , but how people react across the country. Thats right because what you dont want to have his folks talking off the record or rumors or his condition or what this will look like and what is happening to the Vice President. All of that supposition, all that conspiracy driven staff is not of this moment. What is of this moment is the seriousness of the situation. Can the president portray that team and about their approach . It is the confidence and approach of their team, and are that you nighters and not dividers at this moment that keeps us whole . We have seen this in the wake of the assassination attempt on ronald reagan. We saw this moment after the and we see this moment here . If not the tragedy of what is developing, it is the management of expectations of confidence about where we are headed. That is the challenge of this white house and this president in particular. As we keep saying, it is just over a week a few weeks until the election. All these the devil development amount to a true game changer. Tell us again the ways you feel it is a game changer. It is a game changer because it makes the Vice President ial debate next week much more important. It is a game changer because it portrays to our allies that we have a strong democracy, a place that is unique and capable of functioning during stressful times and during crises. You are in the midst of a recession, a pandemic, protests in the streets. Can the United States and its leaders perform at a high level . That requires people like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mitch Mcconnell of the senate, not always been on the same page, to be on the same page for the same team. That means the coven release talks take on a new added dimension. All of this funnels into the election that is one month and one day for now. That being the case, people are voting. We have over 2 million votes that have already been registered and cast. There is a huge amount of momentum related to this election. That handles everything from economic recovery to resilience to what is happening in terms of evening california for wildfire relief. There is a dramatic pause at this moment that has consequences far beyond just what is happening inside the white house or inside Walter Reed Hospital. We were talking about joe biden a short time ago. He is taking down all negative ads, going all positive according to the new york times. It is another reflection of what you are saying, that the effort appears to be made to go beyond politics here. Thats right. If you want to pause the negative ads in the differentiation or difference that punctuates the politics, the negativity, this is a moment not to be hyper partisan, but hyper american. This is a moment to be one of all of us and to portray that. I think the Biden Campaign can use that to their leverage, to their momentum, to their benefit, if you want to think of it that way, but it is also about not being partisan as well. It is about what you the president well. It is about setting that aside despite the differences we saw illustrated on tuesday night and what was historically the worst debate ever. Can we unite at this moment because what is at stake is much farther beyond what happens on november 3. It is much more about america as the city on a hill and not just america divided. We mentioned earlier the Vice President ial debate is scheduled for next week, next wednesday. Who knows between now and wednesday, but it is still on last we heard. You are saying that does take on more weight, especially given the fact that the first president ial debate did not go well. It might be a last chance for people if it happens to really hear without interruption some of the differences in policy and other issues. Thank you for that because what you have is, there are very few moments this particular election where the campaigns can control the narrative and control their message. One of the finer points is how well does the challenge, how well does senator Kamala Harris prosecute the case. How hard you go against the pandemic and what is happening . Paradoxically, what happens with Vice President mike pence in terms of providing vision and leadership for the next four years . What are you going to do and how will you write the country . That is the challenge. Can you provide that vision while at the same time providing contrast . This really has sent a shockwave through washington. You point out they are dealing with the Contentious Supreme Court nomination, a snucfq÷the bombshell. There is a level gqcof concern even though the ilwhite house trying to oplay downu mccc sorry to jump in, the helicopter has started. The blades are picking up, an indication that the president might be going from the white house onto the south lawn to get onto marine one, which will take him to Walter Reed Medical Center. We are trying to see from this life picture if we will be able to actually see the president. Some of the images coming out, there are a lot of white house staffers now wearing masks. Mark meadows, the chief of staff earlier today after the president and first lady were diagnosed with coronavirus, their positive test coming back today, he fully expects what other white house staffers to get sick. It had originally been sort of a negative thing within the white house to be seen wearing a mask, and now after the president is on his way to the hospital to be treated the president might already be on the helicopter, we are hearing. If that is true, he came out fairly quickly. I dont know that anybody actually saw it. It looks like the helicopter is about to take off. Apparently he and was able to walk out. Now we can see at the bottom all the white house staffers who are wearing masks. The president is on his way now to Walter Reed Medical Center where he will be treated for the next several days for what is being called a mild case of coronavirus, despite having a fever and fatigue. They said he was still in good spirits. While he is there, and he is expected to be there for the next several days, but he will still b
