KRON KRON 4 News At 6pm July 12, 2024

You can imagine about just what happens next not only with the election. Certainly the president s health and the president s own duties. Joining us now bay area congressman Jared Huffman who represents parts of the north bay congressman thank you for being with us tonight your first reaction when you heard last night that he has covid and then when you heard late this afternoon that hes going to be hospitalized. No thank you for having anytime the president of the United States has a health problem, its its a serious issue. And i wish who has contracted covid full. Hes in the best hands, the best medical hands we have in this i hope the doctors at walter reed are in charge of the president has surrounded himself with some. The some quack ish medical doctors as well so im hoping that hes letting the top notch folks at walter reed call the shots at this stage i think if they do theres theres every reason to believe that they dont have a a cautionary tale obviously when you have someone who has all of this testing around him in all of these people protecting him and he still gets it. It tells you that this virus is highly contagious and all of us need to stay vigilant. Congressman it is is no secret that youve not to youre not a fan of the president has been dealing with the pandemic you tweeted something to the effect of hope he recovers fully because he needs to face justice. What did you mean by that. Well heres what i mean were 31 days from the most important election maybe in the history of this country. And i want the president to recover, i dont wish ill for anyone but weve got to keep our eyes focused on everything thats at stake in this election and unfortunately the president has done a terrible job this presidency has been a disaster and we cant allow misplaced sympathy or distraction to take us out of focus here is when were 31 days out from an election this president still needs to be held accountable, doesnt mean we dont want him to be to recover. But he still has to be accountable for some terrible failures of leadership in maybe even some criminal activity. I think we can all agree that we dont want anyone to get covid we dont want anyone to die from covid so laying that out there on the table. This does affect the president ial election, youre supporting. Joe biden how would you characterize how he should navigate the next 4 weeks and certainly the next. 2 weeks when presumably the president will be off the campaign trail and out of the public limelight. I dont think he should change a youre 31 days out you got to stay focused like a laser beam on your message this election is still a referendum on donald trump and hopefully people dont lose sight of that just because naturally as human beings were were sympathetic in a moment like this. We need to at the same time wish the president a full recovery while making sure that we hold him fully accountable at the polls on november, 3rd. Congressman in the president is not the only one who has been exposed to covid19. You have some members of congress who are also dealing with it. Whats the take away for you. You know the take away unfortunately is is that this president did everything you possibly could almost in fight this virus. He flouted medical advice he not only declined to wear a mask, but he made sure that the people around him were wearing mask he had all of these indoor meetings, i mean day after day in close proximity to people and are doing all the things that tony fauci and other experts say you just shouldnt do so he tempted fate for sure and i hope that theres a bit of an awakening for the president and those around him that they need to stop this dangerous reckless behavior in the face of the deadly virus. The best time to get serious about a virus like this is not after you get it and youre in walter reed. Its before you get it and so theres still time to keep others from getting it and im just hoping very much that there are changes from this white house and how they talk about and act about this virus. Over in the Senate Chuck Schumer is now saying that. Because 2 members of the Senate Judiciary committee have contracted covid that they should stop the proceedings to try to confirm just judge Amy Coney Barrett whats your take on that part of all this. Im stunned that they would even consider going full speed ahead with all of these meetings and they continued to do it today, no masks indoor close proximity. With all of these new positive judge county there it was was with donald trump. Other senators who are part of this process have been in touch with donald trump in with hope hicks other so. Theres theres just a real recklessness an arrogance to the way theyre proceeding. And i think the senate does need to take a time out do some testing take stock of where things stand and just be careful here. Just a final question here of weve been talking leaders who are now experiencing. The downside of the covid pandemic the president was also around. Regular people at the rallies and fundraisers what about them. What about it it certainly includes highprofile cases like herman cain but who knows how many others have been exposed to this virus. Because the president. Created essentially an attractive nuisance by defying public health. Directives and continue continue to put people at risk, its reckless. Its irresponsible. Its part of the baseline of facts that we have to keep in mind when we go to the polls on november, 3rd. Again were wishing the president in the first lady well, but they have acted recklessly they have callous ways that put people at risk and probably cost a lot of people their lives and they need to be held accountable for that. Representative jared help and i know your focus. Is on your constituents who are dealing with not only covid but also the fires in the north bay and also the smoke that has been sort of hovering over our region so a lot on your plate appreciate you taking a few minutes to discuss this important topic with us tonight. Lawmakers all wishing the president well but as Raquel Martin reports for us tonight. Democrats say they hope the new sends a message to all americans to take the virus more seriously. Members here are a lot more paranoid. Than than they were this time yesterday missouri democratic congressman Emanuel Cleaver says capitol hill is in shock. Can build up rain after waking up to news, the president and first lady tested positive for covid19 is jumping up and down and celebrating my thoughts and prayers go out Illinois Republican congressman rodney davis contracted the virus in august. It is wishing the first family, the best hope that they have the same asymptomatic experience with covid that i did the white house has right now the president s symptoms are mild and the Trump Campaign announced it would postpone future rallies or move them online a lot is probably going to be saying we know that the disease hangs in the air iowa, congresswoman cindy axne isis the rallies will never a good idea. No one is immune to this but at a friday Hearing Health and Human Services secretary alex azar would not say if the president s rallies help spread the virus do you think that the president s rallies that he has gone to where people are not social distancing does that contribute to the increase we have consistent advice which is the practice 3 ws for all individuals wash your around your distance wear face coverings avoid settings where you cant not applies to any setting but the virus continues to spread in washington Republican Utah senator mike lee who was at the white house saturday also tested positive and is now in quarantine. In washington Raquel Martin. Democratic president ial candidate joe biden has tested negative for covid he tweeted this out today saying im happy to report to live tested negative for covid thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder. Wear a mask keep social distance and wash your hands. Now Campaign Staff will continue to be tested all throughout bidens campaign and hes been pushing for wearing the masks and keeping the distance something that the Trump Campaign has downplayed over the past several months and heres a look at some other people on capitol hill who have tested negative since last night ivanka trump Jared Kushner the president s son barron trump Vice President mike pence second lady karen pence u. S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin and senator Kamala Harris all negative supreme court. Nominee judge Amy Coney Barrett tested negative though she is said to have been infected with covid over the summer and commerce secretary wilbur ross testing negative. Well state lawmakers are weighing in on the president s covid19 diagnosis, some of the reaction tonight coming in from a republican state lawmaker. Who was hospitalized because of the virus so he knows kron fours Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala has that story i would just hope that everyone again would respond like they did with me and separate the politics out of it, i know becomes much harder at the highest office in the last republican Assemblyman Tom Lackey disheartened by the response to the president s covid19 diagnosis, 3 months after being hospitalized for the virus himself. He says he still doesnt feel like his health is completely back to normal. He says hes praying for the president we need to really try to focus on being better people think beyond ourselves california, democrats were mostly quiet on the topic friday by Late Afternoon governor Gavin Newsome and the leaders of both legislative chambers stayed silent on the diagnosis, silicon valley, assemblyman evan low mocked trump on twitter late thursday night writing thoughts prayers bleach and hydroxychloroquinn it will go away just like that let me tell you black he says his own experience with covid19 changed his view of the virus do you think this is likely to change the president s perspective, i would certainly hope so i know humility may not be as his strongest asset that will change one way or another i think it will make you a better person as long as he gets intervention that that he demands and people will pray in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. Gov back to our breaking news tonight, the president hospitalized at walter reed after coming down with the coronavirus were joined now by doctor maldonado from Stanford Health issues, professor of pediatrics and Health Research and policy at stanford university, the focus on infectious diseases, thank you so much for joining us tonight doctor maldonado we had some late breaking information that the was having trouble breathing. Yes, shortness of breath is that concerning. Absolutely it is concerning hes pretty high risk of having progression of symptoms. And it is not unusual i do see these patients in the Outpatient Clinics year for treatment trials. We are doing studies with the region are a product that hes received apparently and we have seen that it can take couple days or even longer for people to have symptoms of does it tell you anything that the progression has gone in what appears to be a rapid motion less than 24 hours ago. He tested positive in here is now in the hospital. You it does seem to signify that he could progress we generally see most of the people who dont get hospitalized. How a slower course in their progression of symptoms. But its really hard to tell i have i mean obviously i havent seen him personally i dont know what his condition is but it is concerning that hes already having issues breathing and we dont know if hes having chest pain or shortness of breath as we have heard that he is having shortness of breath weve also had reports that down. Symptoms its much stronger than the first lady who also has tested positive on. So with the comorbidities that he has of age and weight. Does or those danger signs well so about 20 of the average person who has this infection. About 20 will be hospitalized. The risk of for people over 65 is much higher than and also with calmer most of those people who are hospitalized have at least one. Or more comorbidities and males actually have a slightly higher risk than men women. The house by so hes definitely got a number risk factors going for him here the first lady does not have. Do a little math for us, lets just say best case scenario. He starts to improve and the hospital is released in a few days. Whats the president s timeline here for getting back on the campaign trail as were now just about a month away from the election. Yeah, just back of the envelope i generally if you look at the regeneron trial itself if you look at the studies on that anybody that just got released earlier this week. What we saw is that people who got the regeneron treatment it took them about half the time to get better is it that people who got the placebo but even that was still about a week or so and these were patients as well who very sick. So i would say would take them you know again i cant say for sure, but yeah people start to feel better maybe 7. 10 days. And you certainly cant come out of isolation for at least 10 days maybe 14 depending your clinical course. Yeah i was going to even even without any of the severe symptoms on quarantine is usually 14 days, correct. Yeah, 10 to 14 right depending you know how well hes doing and his symptoms. Doctor mild not professor of pediatrics, the president has talks numerous times about how covid basically doesnt affect kids what is your take on that narrative and what would you like the public to know about your experience with this virus. Well its simply not children we know have gotten infected, we know that about 10 of the cases in the u. S. Or in children under 18. Although they do tend to have less severe illness. So that is heartening but we do know children can get infected. They can be hospitalized. The deaths are rare. But importantly for the rest of the population children can transmit disease to adults and other children, we know for example that in a Day Care Center study published by the cdc recently even an 8 monthold child in daycare transmitted infection to its parents so we know that its possible for children to get sick. They may not be as sick as adults, but that could be a false sense of security because it can be infectious to others. Thank Yvonne Maldonado from Stanford Health we are learning so much more about this virus every day appreciate your insights. Thank you. Right now well bring you the latest covid statistics across the country the death toll in the u. S. Has now surpassed 208,000 and there have been 7. 3 Million People who have been infected california has reported now more than 824,000 confirmed cases and more than. 16,000 deaths statewide here in the bay area there have been more than 101,000 confirmed cases in the virus has taken more than 1500 lives. What are called Health Equity benchmarks are going to be an important factor in determining county reopening some mid the pandemic it has to do with trying to curb outbreaks in disproportionately affected communities as kron fours rob fladeboe reports for us tonight efforts to reduce new cases in Positivity Rates in the south bay. Are making some progress. Like this one posted that story and king roads in East San Jose remind residents that their community has been disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus after reaching a high of roughly 60 the percentage of coronavirus cases here and in gilroy is now at 57. 1 that continues to trend downward. The failure to meet with the state says are Health Equity benchmarks could be a problem for the county as it works toward further reopenings has led the aisle that is always a problem when you know the impacted segments and members your community. Or are not are not making the same progress as the rest of our commute were not going to thrive and let everybody drives a multicultural populist language barriers and utterly lack of testing and contact tracing. Contributed to the higher numbers a door to door educational campaign, another outreach efforts are credited with helping to reinforce the need for face masks, social distancing, and the need for testing along with those lower numbers these are folks who are of the Community Speaking the language had in the clutch a competency having making a very c
