Media this morning that the Hospital Systems are inundated right now with burn patients. Those suffering from smoke inhalation. She says theres no 911, service cell service is down phone service is down as well. The coast guard has confirmed that theyve had to pull 12 people from the water so far that ran into the ocean to escape the heat and the flames. La hina has been devastated. One resident says all boat owners have been asked to rescue people from the water. And here you can see in this video from a viewer there to our sister station on maui. That. Traffic is backed up. A lot of the roads in some cases blocked by downed power lines and by fallen trees, all courtesy of the extremely strong winds that were generated from hurricane well to the south of the island chain will get more from john in a minute on the weather and all of this. But look at this devastation that you see on the screen. The latest video coming to us from maui state of emergency has been declared, as you can imagine, the white house says that President Biden is monitoring the situation ready to offer any financiar federal assistance that the state of hawaii may need. We know that airlines have been assisting with travelers that are trying to not only leave the island of maui, but also travelers that may have had plans to go there now on vacation. All those plans have been disrupted. Hawaiian airlines is working with passengers, american airlines, Southwest Airlines united all reporting this morning that they are working fee virtually to try to reschedule of these flights for all the travelers whose plans been affected for more on that part of the story we have kron fours Michael Thomas. Hes standing by at San Jose Mineta International airport where weve seen a number of those flights impacted. Michael, good morning. What are you seeing . Hi, good morning, everyone will you know, were seeing a lot of clothes lines. Take a look. This is Hawaiian Airlines for the last hour and a half. They closed up their counter have canceled their flights in any place that are on the switchboard right now. All see delayed until closer to 12 oclock. But i dont necessarily see that happening. When i first arrived here, there probably i would 2 dozen or so people here that had just gotten news that their flights were canceled, where they were being deferred somewhere else. You know, i spoke with one woman who said she had been planning this trip for 9 months. Turn. Her whole family were here. They were completely canceled, not able to head anywhere. I spoke with another woman who says that her family is out there right now. She hasnt been able to get a hold of them since yesterday. And then i spoke with another family in this gentleman tells me that they still plan to head over to hawaii and thats despite officials telling them to even not go there because its really only for emergencies. But take a listen to this woman that i spoke with. She says her family is there. Shes a little bit worried. She hasnt spoken to them in the last 12 hours or so. And their flight heading there has been canceled. And we cant get a hold of were says to fly over there today. And so we basically cant get hold of them on their cell phones. And so were not going chance it go to honolulu because thats where our flight was diverted to. And so were just going to basically to stay here for a couple days in san jose and see if maybe we can make it over there. And its not were just going to cancel our vacation. Now, in addition to that, she tells me that she spoke with her family yesterday and that they werent really concerned. She said that they were close to the fires, but they didnt think that it would escalate to what it has. The only thing that at the time they were worried about was that the she says her sisterinlaw said that her Childrens School may have already started burning on fire yesterday. That has not been confirmed and she cant confirm anything because she hasnt been able to get in touch with them. But back out here live again, you can see Hawaiian Airlines completely empty out of this airport. Agents tell me its only hawaii and alaska and southwest flight over to maui from this location. And from the details were getting, everything has been canceled. But thats a very latest here in san jose. Im Michael Thomas. James, send it back to michael, thank you very much. And for viewers that are just waking up to this story now to help put it. In perspective into a framework, we can understand we can equate it to what we saw in 2017 with the tubbs fire where a fire sparked in calistoga overnight sunday and by monday morning it had traveled dozens of miles to. Santa rosa burning parts of downtown santa rosa. People woke up to that unaware of what happened overnight. Well, thats the same thing. This playing out in la hina with residents there waking up to the fact that there was a wild fire all around them and again, driven in large part by the heavy winds that were generated by storm system. Well, to the south of the island chain and to help better explain that. Weve got john trouble standing by in the Weather Center, and as we saw with the tubbs fire, james, it was a very dry time of year in the bay area. The fires that are burning on maui are on the leeward side of the island. Thats the dry side of the island where the grasses much like here in the bay area this time of year can get very, very dry. What we have to the south of hawaii is a big weather maker here. Hurricane category 4 hurricane status. Dora, which is a very Strong Center of low pressure, even though youre not getting any of the rain from dora in hawaii itself, the winds from it are creating quite the issues. You have this very strong, low pressure thats going to result in winds, hundreds 100s of miles away from the hurricane itself. And thats exactly what they are seeing over there in the Hawaiian Islands. Now, category 4 storm or the dora is going to weaken as it makes its way westward over the next 24 hours here. And that is a bit of good news. Its also going to be making its way away from the islands. So were already seeing evidence of winds calming down around the Hawaiian Islands. Winds initially picked up yesterday morning at around 05 00am they started to see a 50 mile per hour. Wind gusts intensifying last night to 80 plus Miles Per Hour. Wind gusts and just like here in the bay area. When we do see our santa ana wind events like we did during the tubbs fire, you get these accelerating dry winds through canyons through mountain valleys. Thats with essentially those channels between the Hawaiian Islands serve as those wind tunnels and what we have in la hina is right at eastern edge of one of those channel separating 2 islands and just below a Mountain Range in those winds whipped up very fast last night, allowing this fire to burn into the town of vida and much as we are very familiar with in california, fast growing fire dry and windy conditions, recipe for disaster. And unfortunately, those residents are waking up to just that this morning. So were going to keep you updated much as possible right here on as we make our way through the next hour. As for the local forecast, coit tower looks good. We got those clear skies overhead. We are going to see a mild forecast today at 60s and 70s out there very much like what we saw yesterday. So a break from the heat that we had this past weekend. Some 50s still hanging out for santa rosa. Been very cool for you. Under some gray skies now towards the afternoon similar to yesterday, some 70s and 80s for warmest of temperatures. Well be breaking down when the he does return here locally. All still to come, james . John, thank you. 7. We have other breaking news to share with you again this morning. Senator Dianne Feinstein has been released from the hospital after falling at her home in San Francisco. The senator fell sometime yesterday. Her Office Confirmed to kron 4 this morning that she was briefly sent to the hospital yesterday afternoon just as a precaution. They did some tests. They all came back clear. It was apparently a minor fall. But as we know, the senator has been struggling with Health Issues over the last year. She was absent from the senate for about 3 months while dealing with a number of issues, including shingles and ramsay hunt syndrome and set alight. As for a time she missed a number of votes while she was healing. And that prompted a number of lawmakers to call on her to resign, although shes held steadfast that she does not intend to do that. She wants to stay on the job. Unclear if this latest fall will change your mind and the but we do know shes back home now. Recovery. Happening today, the city of san joses meeting with its unions that represent thousands of City Employees have another day of mediation all in an effort to avoid a strike, which at this moment is set to take place next week. Kron fours will tran is in san jose with the very latest. Well we are a couple of hours away. James, from them getting back to the negotiating table and that is good news is bec use as long as youre talking there is hope they have not broken off talks. And the goal is to avoid a strike that is already planned for august 15 overwhelmingly planned by the union. Fact, there was here 2 days ago when they announced that 99 out of 4500 city workers voted to go ahead to go on strike. Should there not be a deal in place by next week . They are looking for a substantial pay raise as well as to fill in hundreds of vacancies. Those vacancies, they say force them to work unwanted overtime. Right now the 2 sides are about 20 Million Dollars. That part. Theyre hoping to strike a deal to avoid that strike, which would be the biggest in san jose in 40 years. There are hoping for the best. Expecting the worst. So take a look at your screen. This is what the union sent out late last night. They said we hope to reach an agreement that averts a strike. We hope the city stops disregarding the skyrocketing cost of living in the understanding crisis that impacts members and our community. However, until we have an agreement that protects services for the community strike, preparations are still very much underway. Now to san joses mayor. He said that they are trying to work out deal. But right now they simply dont have the money. And if they give the unions what theyre looking for that will Hurt Services down the right. But at least theyre back at the bargaining table in about 2 to 3 hours for back see if they make progress. Thank you very much. And then about 10 minutes later, police found a man shot and killed near the lake merritt bart station. Bart police say they used Surveillance Video to help pinpoint a suspect. Took that person into custody within about 2 hours of the shooting. People who use barr told us, yeah, theyre concerned to see Something Like this happen to such a busy place. But, you also cant leave covered in hair. With bounce pet, you can cuddle and brush that hair off. Bounce. Its the sheet. And we are back. Time now is 10 14am, also bad news for people waking up this morning. If youre watching this broadcast and live in california, well, you didnt win the Mega Millions jackpot. Instead, the Winning Ticket apparently was sold in florida. One ticket sold in Merced County matched 5 of the numbers that price is worth about 3 Million Dollars. So. We still have one lucky california. And in that drawing. All right. On that note, lets get over to the Weather Center. We can all feel like a winner, though, when it comes to the weather today. John, good so lucky it was him or said county yesterday. Just kidding. I it is definitely a better forecast to be here in the bay area as opposed to out in the central valley. Where you may be winning the lottery, but she got some hot temperatures, bay area. Weve got the cool weather for you today. Definitely nice and bright out there above the east bay hills, some low stratus singing out closer towards the coastline and up in the north bay. Thats keeping you in santa rosa. Actually pretty cool this morning. Youve only been in the upper 50s. Now its been back and forth between hot and relatively mild this past weekend. It was a High Pressure ridge built now were seeing temperatures cool down because of this low dragging it along with it, some cooler air. But that low does not last forever. And in fact, High Pressure ridge already in the process of starting to work back our direction by this weekend will start to see temperatures rising back into the 90s for inland areas near triple digits by early next week. So enjoy this prolonged break that we have up until friday. We are tapping into nice ocean. Cool there. And that is allowing some gray mo nings. But along with that gray morning comes the cool air along with it and into tomorrow morning, well do a little bit of the same starting on the greater side, then getting still plenty of sunshine like were already seeing 60s for your highs in sf and along the coastline. Thats not going anywhere. Well, our temperatures further inland in the 70s to 80s. These are quite temporary. They will be sticking around through friday. So a few more days of are seasonably warm weather. Nothing too terribly hot livermore. 85 while hayward at 73 oakland at 70 degrees, looking at a lot of 70s for the north bay napa. Only 72 while santa rosa at a warm 77 looking ahead to tomorrows temperatures as well as fridays dont change much compared to todays, we will see those changes into the weekend and early next week, though, thats when inland areas will approach 100 degrees starting sunday. James. All right, john, thank you very much. 10 16, the time. Lets go to Santa Cruz County now where as fire season is expected to peak later in the fall for that area. Cal fire says they need more hands on deck as they face a hand crew shortage. According to a new report, feuer acres burned in wild fires in 2022 than in 2021. This years also been another milder fire season. Thankfully, although cal fire has invested about 20 Million Dollars in high infrared cameras that can detect fires early, they still need the manpower to create physical fire lines and to remove any potential fuel by clearing some of these wild ones. The agency says the shortage happened during the pandemic and only money right now to adequately staff about 61 of the 152 hand crews in the state to the minimum level. So they need more people. Well, caltrans was unable to fund planned replacement of the bohemian highway bridge in monte rio. In Sonoma County county officials announced in a news release that the Transportation Department will instead provide approximately 25 Million Dollars in funding to retrofit the bridge to modern seismic safety standards. The state of california will also invest in that structure back in 2012, caltrans found multiple concerns with the bridge, including a crumbling foundation and potential inability to withstand earthquakes. Analysis back then showed a new bridge would have been cheaper than retrofitting the structure. Well, developing news this morning, an american nurse and her child have been released now by their kidnappers in haiti. A witness told the Associated Press that the armed men abducted the nurse and her daughter from a clinic in the capital of portauprince.
