Weve just learned this afternoon that at least 6 people have been killed. Dozens more have been hurt and countless homes and businesses have been destroyed. Firefighters are battling multiple blazes contra trick concentrated in 2 areas. Right now. The Tourist Destination of west maui and then inland mountainous region behind a town, a popular shopping and dining area is at the heart of the western fire. Thats that area there. A state of emergency has been declared as cell and 911, services are down. This part of the island hurricane door, which is churning in the ocean south of the islands is being blamed for this strong wind gusts that are intensifying. The flames. And in all the confusion, panic residents had to jump into the ocean in order to escape the burning buildings and the flames were coming towards them. State leaders are calling these wildfires unprecedented. Lot of residents in the state of hawaii when we are preparing for harry kiwi. We expect ways we expect floods. We never in this state that. Hurricane, which did not make impact on our islands, will cause this type of wildfires, wildfires that wiped out communities while flyers that wiped out businesses while flyers that destroyed homes. 3 wildfires are also burning on hawaies big island, although there have been no reports of injuries. Are homes lost there . Maui is main airport is sheltering as many as 2000 travelers whose flights have been canceled or who they recently just arrived on the island now they have nowhere to go and flights from the bay area. The airports here. As they try to get now to hawaii, these flights either been canceled, delayed or rerouted. Wednesday morning, the world woke up to devastating images of a wildfire spreading rapidly across the island of maui. We were headed to on to win and his family are traveling from texas to hawaii for vacation wednesday morning. Their connecting flight from sfo to maui was canceled. At first they were told it was because of a small brushfire. They just said that there was a brush and were thinking were on the next flight. Not a problem. And then we started talking about and then we found out about all the west side is now what we heard was on fire. We really like art is about people jumping in the water to get away from the fire get case the family spent the morning trying to rearrange their vacation plans. We contacted the hotel. She was there with her husband and 2 kids on their way to pali just a couple miles from la hina where these videos were taken of the worst of the fire. The car radio had no fire warnings and no roadblocks for stopping them from continuing. But the family made the executive decision to turn around and not go to the area. Theyve come to love. We were we frequent there all the time. We left to go in front street. Its a really great tourist spot. Everyone goes there with all the shops excursions and votes restaurants. And so its really devastating see the news. But its shocking to me traveling here that we didnt get notified not to come into can a poly liner like theres so many cars driving into it. Said rex says her family was able to book a lastminute hotel room on the east side of maui and have been trying to find flights back home to the bay area. And the reason for the wind isnt just that we have Hurricane Dora. You might look at this and think, hey, this is pretty far away from hawaii. So why is this causing all of this problem . Well, what happens here is weve got a category 4 hurricane, obviously very powerful, low pressure system. And weve got a High Pressure system, very large High Pressure system to the north. So hawaii is sandwiched in between them. Now, the way this works out as they win gradient has been set up here because we have that counter clockwise circulation around low pressure, clockwise circulation around High Pressure and then the wind gets driven between them. When you see that when gradient, right, we start to get that pushing the wind and making it even stronger. Add to the fact that there are mountains along hawaii. So you get that wind that goes up to elevation, dries out, gets warmer and then comes racing down. The other side. So these are some of the gusts were seeing right now. You can 25 miles per hour. 21 miles per hour. Also all of the areas in red. That is where they have the red flag warnings that are up now. Unfortunately, this wind is really going to stop until we get into the later part of tomorrow. So lets talk a little bit about why these wildfires happen. You basically need 3 ingredients, right . Dry vegetation, low humidity and winds. Now we are in our summertime. So obviously vegetation is dry. And you also need that heat source fuel and oxygen to keep it going. Well, you can find that fuel right there when youve got brush and grasses and trees that have dried out in the summer. So you get something that starts the fire and then unfortunately the component of wind coming into this means that fire can spread very quickly. No matter how it started. And that is what has been happening in hawaii. And its absolutely heartbreaking here we are looking at Hurricane Dora and again, it is, you know, 860 miles to the southwest of honolulu. Right now, you wouldnt consider that to be close right . But because of that, when gradient, thats why its such a problem. So category 4 right now, it is expected to move away and dissipate as we get into the next couple of days. Things will get better friday. Things will be a lot better. But between today and tomorrow, still some danger there. Unfortunately, for those who are in hawaii and obviously we here in the bay area understand what fire danger is. Half moon bay, kind of an indication of that system that is to our south and again, that will start to bring in a little bit of moisture to central. Probably central will get some sprinkles in Southern California<\/a>, getting a little rain right now. But for us, its really going to be a matter of kind of keeping an eye on that for the possibility of any of that energy causing thunderstorms because that could cause. Fire danger for us right now doesnt look like well get much out of it and thats fine with me tonight, the marine layer is going to be rolling back in and as we can see already happening, patchy drizzle possible. We got a little drizzle last night. So look out for that. Again, those slick roads possible when youre kind of coming in tomorrow for your commute, if youre driving in and friday are going to cool down as those clouds kind come up from the south where that system is down in Southern California<\/a>. And then that passes us by we start to warm up and we really stay there for a couple of days. You can see monday, tuesday, wednesday, even sunday could be pretty hot inland in those upper 90s. Back to thank you so much. There are now new lanterns hanging over San Francisco<\/a>s china town months after a series of storms tore through dozens of them. That was earlier in the year. There was a lantern ceremony that was held on tuesday night to celebrate San Francisco<\/a>s. In chinatown, the newest installations, the bright red lanterns that hang across grand street in chinatown have finally been restored after the storms in the beginning of the year tore them apart. Jenny chan with the Chinatown Merchants Association<\/a> has been working for months to raise enough money for this project in order to replace 3 blocks of lanterns to cost about 30,000. A block. And she says the hefty price tag of this project comes with Higher Quality<\/a> lacked heard so they can withstand the elements. So theyre not like really exactly. Paper lanterns are more like logged in and also spray them so that they last longer even with the weather its a very heavy labor costs. The association independently paid for and install the lanterns 10 years ago and they have become a staple in the neighborhood. One more block of grant street still needs to be done. And then this whole project will be complete. Theyre aiming for the moon festival, which is september 23rd and 24th. A group of middle School Students<\/a> in Fresno County<\/a> are being recognized for creating an app to help prevent fentanyl overdoses. This after the form to junior high students won the 2023 messi usa National Engineering<\/a> Design Competition<\/a> in new mexico for their work. They were against 25,000 other students. Their app is called fenton. Now its designed to spread awareness and help save lives. Since january, the students spent over 1000 hours after School Planning<\/a> learning how to build this app. At the start of the competition did not know how to code. And you took the courses came up the idea designed the app and went process the product was the pills. Its a great feeling knowing that the students are getting the recognition that they deserve. Right now the students say the app is not available to the public, but they hope that it will be very soon. The uc system says that they have admitted the largest amount of firsttime students ever from california. Overall you see is set to welcome more than 88,000 freshman applicants from our state. Petaluma police say theyre still getting reports of skimmers being used to try and steal credit card information. Check this out. Police say. They got a call about this skimming device at a bank of america atm. It turned out to be a small hidden camera with a memory card intended to record people entering their pin numbers. In another instance, police say they uncovered a skimmer attached to the real carter at a local retail store. Police say you should always inspect an atm or card reader before you use it and compare it to other nearby machines to see if it looks like its crooked looser, damage. They also recommend using a mobile wallet like apple pay those transactions, they say are more secure. Triple a is warning travelers about a scam targeting people whose flights have been delayed or canceled. The scam targets. People who search for Airlines Phone Number<\/a> online and then those fake phone numbers lead colors to an unrelated 3rd party. And then that 3rd party asks for reservation information and a credit card number in order for you to pay a service fee or the price difference between flights. Aaa reminds travelers that airlines will not charge you for canceled or delayed flights. So if youre at the airport, speak with a gate agent in person or use the airlines app. If you use Curbside Pickup<\/a> at target, you could soon be able to add a hot drink or a frappuccino to your order. Target is now planning to add starbucks orders to its Curbside Pickup<\/a> service. But first, police in alameda are attributing a recent arrest. 2 more than just good investigating how they say license plate readers help bring 2 suspects to justice. These storiein alameda, theres been a break in a robbery investigation in which a woman was dragged trying to hold on to the suspects vehicle. Today the chief of police talked to kron fours haaziq modyoon about the technology wn t was used to track that vehicle. 2 women have been arrested for the june 20. Robbery of an adult female victim seated behind the wheel of a parked car on broadway near shoreline in the city of alameda. Investigators say one of the robbers reached into the passenger side of the vehicle and took the victims personal property. The victim. I attempted to retrieve her belongings back and the a suspect drove off, dragging her in the process and she was injured because she felt. Fortunately, the injuries were not lifethreatening. Alameda Police Investigators<\/a> say later that same day the suspects were spotted on Surveillance Video<\/a> at a target store in san leandro fraudulently using the victims credit card to make a Purchase Police<\/a> chief. The shot joshi says that evidence combined with the citys automated license plate reader cameras led investigators to the alleged suspect vehicle at a residence in the city of hayward and narrow down who did what vehicle it was and we work the u. S. Marshals to effect an arrest and serve a search warrant. License plate readers were approved by the Alameda City Council<\/a> back in september 2022. And activated in february of this year. We have use license plate readers. To help us in at least 30 cases that have led to at least 40 arrests. The criminal charges in this case include robbery, elder abuse fraud, possession of stolen property and unrelated gun at this time. Alameda police are not releasing the names of the 2 female suspects because they say the investigation is ongoing. And alameda has it made kron 4 news. New details now in the Pink Poodle Strip Club<\/a> scandal involving for onduty san jose. Firefighters. It was last october that a viral video on social media showed a bikini clad women in high heels exiting a san jose fire engine outside of the pink poodle. The city has now released 100 page report into what happened that night. So according to the report, there were 4 fire officials on that engine, including a fire captain named william todd nauseum. There was also a professional photographer on board who is said to work at the strip club and his friends with todd not see the photographer had taken headshots of the crew and want to drop them off at the firehouse before realizing he had more photos that he had left on a thumb drive at his work. So technology allegedly offered to give him a ride. And when they got to the club, the photographer called his co worker to bring out the thumb drive and that coworker was the woman in the bikini who then hopped on the engine and said, quote, i want to ride he says he now admits that that ride was a poor decision and it cost him a demotion for misconduct misuse of City Property<\/a> failing to perform his duties and failing to follow the departments rules. He was the only person disciplined and demoted down to the rank of engineer. 2. Of these very one of 2 large annual meteor showers will be visible in the sky this weekend and this year since the moon will be barely visible views of the Perseid Meteor Shower<\/a> are expected to be great. The stream of particles say entering the atmosphere at a very high velocity, 40 kilometers per second is quite common. And then as they enter the atmosphere, the friction and shock of entering the atmosphere causes them to burn up and break apart. And thats what produces meteor streaks, chabot space and science enter astronomer Gerald Mckeegan<\/a> says depending on how dark your sky is, you could see anywhere from 30 to 100 shooting. Meteors an hour. No need for binoculars or a telescope. Just give your eyes a half hour or so to adjust to the darkness. And stare into space. The best time to be a viewing. It is between 11 oclock on saturday. The 12th 11 oclock pm. And 2 very early in the morning. Its a 03 30am, in the morning on the 13th, the peak of the second large annual meteor shower called the geminid is expected in mid december. But when you think about this weekend we get a chance to see yes, im just looking at that and thinking if we could just get above that marine layer, its perfect. Right. And the way to do that really is to go inland where the fog does not make it to. If you really want to guarantee youre going to see. A shot of but yeah, the peak this weekend, basically its kind of a window of opportunity. So that would be friday through sunday. But you heard our expert in the story that fully just brought it really is late saturday night into early sunday morning that well get to the densest part of it. So if you want to try and up your chances, that would be when and that would be midnight to sunrise. Right . So also just to mention that the moon is waning, meaning that it is going to get less bright as we work our way through the weekend. So that means that we should do a little bit better because its only going to be about, you know, 10 little less than that per cent over of. We were not city. So that will help, too. But the best places see places where there arent a lot of Natural Light<\/a> and where there arent clouds. Lets talk about the clouds part, shall we look at futurecast. So i mentioned that we have some of this moisture kind of rolling in into Southern California<\/a> because of that formerly tropical system. And you can see there on thursday bringing a little more rain trying to bring those clouds our way as we get into thursday evening. And then friday also, but then we get a little bit better as we head towards the weekend. Those temperatures are going to rise. That marine layer is going to start to compress a bit. Now. Heres saturday afternoon. So you can still see it is definitely very present, but we should get a little bit better as we work our way towards the weekend with that marine layer compressing just a bit. So 50, 50 shot. I have to say the bay area. Thats kind of the way it goes with the fog. But if you head inland, well have a much better run of it. Theres a live look right now at some of that moisture streaming into Southern California<\/a>. When i come back in a bit, well talk more about our extended forecast and how that may impact us. Wildlife authorities finally captured the internet sensation hank the tank. Thats a female black bear. The mother bear had been linked through dna to nearly 2 dozen home invasions and Property Damage<\/a> in and around lake tahoe. She has since been categorized as a conflict. There and california fish and wildlife usually euthanize a socalled conflict. Theres due to the significant risk that they pose to the community. But hank, the tank is no ordinary bear. Thats it option that is we try to employ as well as possible. But there are situations of conflict. Theres like this usually dont turn out quite so lucky. Were very lucky that colorado gave us this out and has some sanctuary space for her to go to because of her sort of theme from last year. You know, also her rap sheet. This could have ended. Really, but were glad that it didnt. Yes. So now that you. Youve got her do actually still have are in your possession. But shes moving to a wildlife facility in colorado. Yeah, i friday morning. We mobilized her put her in a transport. Cajun took her down to our Wildlife Health<\/a> lab in rancho cordova. We assessed her she was looking real good. And then on monday morning, the wild Animal Sanctuary<\/a> from springfield, colorado, the drought, and she there about 10 30am, yesterday. So shes actually in colorado in the sanctuary. I heard she has more 100 acres to live out the rest of her life. So thats very good scenario for badly behaving their bears behaving badly. Ok, so shes there now, im curious. She had some cubs, 3 of them. I was reading whats happening to them. So the 3 cubs were also caught on friday morning. One of them was i had been hit by a car on july. 21st. So cubs that were not injured were put in the trap without a mobilization drugs. The injured problem was immobilized and put into a metal transport and taken down to. The sonoma wildlife i said, oh, county Wildlife Rescue<\/a> outside of had a all 3 cubs are doing great. That injured come was taken to a vet and a steadfast and the prognosis is good. The next step for them hopefully theyre going to go through Rehabilitation Program<\/a> with the hope that they would end up back in the wild. Its has significant the program where they teach them how to the affair. So foraging things, things that normally the sow and teach them that she didnt already have kind of fraud. Already acting badly. And fortunately, was probably going to teach them how real word from a garbage can or refrigerator was a lot quicker and more calories maybe a grabber, berry or, you know, fish. So how did hank learn these bad behaviors to begin with . You know, usually its what happens humans encroaching upon their habitat. Right. Tahoe at the top us 20,000, people who live there. As we continue to build houses and farther and farther out. Were encroaching on their habitat. Coming in. People are taking pictures with them. Theres you know, theres a tract and all over homestead. You have. For trees that have fruit falling. You have garbage cans. You have a barbecue in your back deck that you havent cleaned with. You just closed it. All of these things are attractants to theirs. Campers will come up put in, you know, for boxes full garbage right outside of their box. Thats the absolute wrong thing you should do. Should take your garbage and pack it out with you. Thats the case. Thats whats bringing these bears closer and closer into human failings and the more they do it, the less they get afraid of humans. Its called habituation. So year before run out of time, sorry to cut you off there. But this the best Case Scenario<\/a> for hank the tank and her cubs. I know we talked you kind of walk us back in the beginning there that you visit euthanizing the bears is not your first option here, but his relocation rehab is the best thing that could happen to these bears and the lake tahoe community. Best thing that could have happened to these theres is that we go back and we do not attract them to the to our human dwellings in the first place. They live out the rest of their life in a while. Theres no interaction like this whatsoever. But since that is that ship sailed having sanctuaries face at all lake. 64 at what we call and the potential for rehabilitation on the problems is the secondbest option, not ideal, but a lot better than euthanasia or not having sanctuary space and time for well, im happy for hank the tank and a little babies. As we take a live look outside, you can see that certainly if youre Half Moon Bay<\/a> been in lhe clouds all day today. Golden gate bridge has been pretty shrouded as well. And mount tam cam showing that marine layer thats on the move. But theres some sunshine out there in san jose. The east bay got some great sunshine in San Francisco<\/a>. Had a pretty good looking afternoon to turn temperatures right now. Low 80s in the south bay. Just 58 degrees out at half. Moon bay, where we just all of those clouds. But the inner east bay has warmed up into the 80s. Weve got some nice 60s and 70s around the bay itself. But all told, you know, were looking at kind of below average day across the board with those cooler temperatures as low pressure. Has remained in control. Here are High Pressure<\/a>, though, will be on the move as we get into the latter part of the weekend. And thats were going to see a warm up. But right now its kind of that fog in the morning, sunny, in the afternoon pattern. And as we get into the evening, you got it. The marine layer is coming back in and bringing a little drizzle with it. You can see tonight. So expect that in the overnight hours. Wake up tomorrow. Again, were going to be foggy and then get a little sunshine in the afternoon. And rinse, repeat until we get to about saturday and thats and things will start to change, though, taking a look at kind of our inland valley temperatures today in the 80s. Same stories get to thursday by friday. Get a little bit of that cloud cover that i talked about from that tropical system thats bringing a little bit of rain to Southern California<\/a>. So that will knock those temperatures down a little bit for you inland before we then pop up into the 90s. Again, once we get into saturday, low 90s on saturday, but midnineties on sunday and even the potential for some upper 90s. After that, heres a look at your extended forecast. A pretty nice looking workweek. The weekend starts to warm up. And then next week, were kind of off to the races with above average temperatures. So that kind of up a few down a few this week will stay kind of down a few next week. You can see where were going here into the upper 90s inland. Back to you. All right. Everybody else, though, running cool for. A little bit longer. So once we get to the weekend, though, saturday will pick temperatures up. So if youre in San Francisco<\/a>, were going to one of those nice weekends rate. 71 degrees. 74 degrees. Thats about perfect. But if youre inland, then you might say, wait a minute, i dont know about that, right . 96 degrees is getting a little warm. And by monday were really going to get up there. So you can see those temperatures in the upper 90s. So, you know, my advice is if you have outdoor things to do and you live in the inner east day, get them done these next couple of days or at the very least, get them done early in the day on saturday, knowing theyre going to start that warm up and then kind of stay there as we get into sunday through next week.
