But the Administration Says it has been transparent. We have been very transparent with members of Congress Since the beginning of the war in ukraine. Dozens if not hundreds of briefings, class, but unclassified, certainly sharing documents. That they do want to vote on an aid package quickly. We wake up on our saturday with some clouds in the evening to get a little break. And then overnight saturday into sunday, thats we start to see the showers roll through. They are scattered. They are light, but theyre pretty pervasive across. You know, most of the day, i think well all get a little bit out of this and then clear out as we head into our monday. But first, 3rd, times the charm unless, of course youre ohio congressman jim jordan. Details on todays speaker vote at how republicans are reacting. Get some expert analysis next. Step. The speaker fight in congress back to square one today. Republicans had a top candidate for the but he dropped out of the race after losing support from his party. Of course, were talking about ohio jim jordan, washington, d. C. , correspondent Hannah Brandt explains what happened and where things go from here. Defeated congressman jim jordan is no longer going for the gavel. Leaving the house. Still speakerless. We need to come together and figure out who our speakers going to be in the 3rd round of voting on friday morning, congressman jim jordan lost support sending republicans into a closed door meeting where they voted to drop him as their nominee. The most popular republican in the united states, congress was just knifed by secret ballot in a private meeting in the basement of the capitol. Its a swampy a swamp gets and jim jordan deserve better than that. Now republicans go back to the drawing board. Im concerned about what we as they desperately try to find someone who can win enough support in their bitterly divided caucus. Were going to get done is just going take a little longer without a speaker of the house is frozen and lawmakers are frustrated. I think this has become less of a political fight and more of a Group Therapy session. I think its really messy. But theyve got to work through it. Democrats remain united behind congressman hakeem jeffries. Jeffrey says democrats are fed up with republican indecision with less than a month to fund the government and an urgent request for aid to ukraine and israel waiting for congressional approval. If the house is not reopen, then it will stall unnecessarily and lives will be jeopardized. He says the solution is clear. There is only one way. Out. A bipartisan forward. Republicans are planning to reconvene monday to discuss a new speaker candidate and a new path forward in washington. Im Hannah Brandt. So this inability to move forward, of course, coming at a time when more Domestic Affairs are at stake. And we as we just heard without a speaker, congress cant really do anything to approve that 105 billion dollar aid package that the president is asking a form. So we want to talk a little bit more about all the things that are happening in dc what it means for us. So were going to bring in donna cranes. Thank you so much for joining us here. Shes a Political Science professor at a san jose state. Thanks for joining us. Donna. Great to hear ok . So lets talk about jim jordan and what happened today. He is now totally off the table. They have 3rd round of voting. This like secret meeting underground. And theyre like, you know what . Its just never going to happen. And hes admitting that. But he just doesnt have the who do you think is next to take a spot . And then we can talk about like how this holds everything up. Oh, boy, it is impossible to know who might be a forward next to try to leave the House Republicans, you know, the the essential problem here is that the republicans in the house are just very deeply divided. Most of them are so traditional republicans, right, republicans that we all know that are familiar with. But there is a there is a group of them that are hard, they come from districts that have been drawn specifically to elect hard right members of congress and they absolutely want compromise has either side can win a majority. You know, theyre going to have to go back to their conference pick somebody else. But i dont know who in their conference could satisfy both factions. So i got a couple days to try to figure that out. Do you think at all that they are delaying this vote and not picking a speaker in an attempt may be. Backhanded lee not to supply aid israel or ukraine. Definitely and i base answer just on my observation over the years, the last 3 or 4 speakers republicans chosen in the house of have been investing processes. So i just know their conference to be very deeply divided. I think also they understand that this is about look for they you know, they have the majority in congress. They ran for the majority there and to be in charge of by saying they could be adults and theyre not acting like it. So i think if they if they had any shot of making process go better, they would they would take it. But i just think they dont. So did you listen to the president s of oval address last night . Im going to sue. Yes, or at least youve heard a little bit about what happened. Just curious what the reaction has been to it so far today, how its being received. Yeah, i mean, i think the reaction has been fairly i i think of what its done do is put on a spotlight on the fact that congress is isnt is a Holding Pattern been especially the house. Cant take any action any major legislation until that sort out who wants to be in charge. And we have, you know, 3 or 4 huge items, any one of which is kind of a make or break item and it cant before with any of those. So i think i you know, President Biden, in my made a both to show a divide. Skews me just show that he has a 7 day for both sides in this conflict, but also to put pressure on the house to get its act together and pass legislation put funding for for the middle east and also for ukraine. Despite the in death of a question because i i certainly dont know the answer, but can. Can the house not have a speaker just just never pick one. And just everyone goes on. No, thats a
