Hes considered one of the games best. Kenney stabler has died after battling cancer. Stablers family released the news. He was a kind man and never turned down an request for an autophotograph. That first super bowl victory came in 1977. The familys statement said that stabler was diagnosed with colon cancer. You can call whatever you want to call him on the field. Shes a winner. The greatest two minute quarterback of all time. Sports director mark ibanez was just a sport reporter and you got to meet stabler. Many people asked what is this guy or that guy. Ill can assure you many reporters would agree kenney st abler one of the friendliest, easy going, not full of himself guys you will ever meet. Once he hit the field a fierce athlete. He was too cool in the 70s what joe montana was. Stabler was also involved in such momentous plays. He was always one of those guys. Never gave the impression that he was more important than the next man. Just one of the main reasons hes on my top three athletes of all time on a personal level. I will never forget him. Like you said, first game i ever covered for the raiders in the locker room. You know i saw a great moment an example of his leadership i guess it was a kicker by the name of jim breach. A guy out of cal missed a very short midfield. Afterward all these reporters had this guy jammed in the room. Stabler got out of the shower and had a towel around him and he said leave me alone. If i had not played such a lousy game, you wouldnt be asking him any questions. Come to my locker and ask me. Just took all the pressure off of a young player. Ive been hearing stories about those days how they would go out and just hang out with these players and have a good time. I mean you dont see that to do. Very interactive like i said, just like hes one of the guys. Nothing special. I remember one autograph session i was kind of the mc at the event. And there was a line of raider fans around the block and every one of them had a story as they came up and had a memorabilia signed. He listened to every one of them. He was acting like i never heard that story before. I remember that game, made eye contact and signed everything they had. Thats just who he was. He wasnt putting on an act. That was who kenney stabler was. There isnt many guys like him. I truly miss him. I think once the morning period ends just the thought of him and what he brought to football on and off the field going to bring a will the of smiles to a lot of people. He made a big impression on many people. From the very get go. Coach john madden remembered his qb brightly. The raiders said in a statement said that stabler wore the black and silver with pride and will continue to live in their hearts. The closure wont be easy about 100,000 vehicles travel down doyle drive. But for the next three days, all those drivers must find another way. Reporter drivers might not be prepared for traffic delays that could add hours to fridays commute. Reporter crews will be on a deadline to finish by monday. They do have concrete that sets more quickly. They will need that to get this project done. Were leaving tonight because its going to be a mess tomorrow. Reporter the golden gate ferry will add service this weekend. Back here live tonight the rain is making thing a little bit of a mess. I asked a project spokeswoman if it could cause any set backs or delays she told me no. Everything should be okay in a few caltrans people just passed by and gave me the thumbs up sign.
