Along Martin Luther king near 40th street. Two Police Officers showed up at a home looking to question a 49yearold man about a Sexual Assault that happened a few hours earlier. Before the police had a chance to talk with them, the man opened fire with this sks assault rifle, a highpowered weapon with a 30round magazine. The two officers returned fire, hitting the man and he died at the hospital. Unfortunate fortunately, this doesnt happen very often but the potential for it to happen is there for it to happen. Reporter the officer underwent surgery at the hospital and is expected to recovery. The man who was shot to death by police has not been identified. Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting in vallejo this morning. The Solano CountySheriffs Department said deputies responded to a 911 call after 7 00 a. M. About shots fired on benicia road near central avenue. One person was found dead in a car there. Theres no word on a motive or suspect in this case. Authorities have not released the name of the victim. Developing news in the colorado Movie Theater case. The jury has decided james holmes should continue to face the Death Penalty in the murders of 12 people. This is phase 2 of the sentencing. In phase 3, the jury will make its final decision on whether he should be executed. The jury found him guilty of opening fire during a midnight screaming in july of 2012. Injuries rejected his insanity defense. A longtime morgan hill teacher accused of molesting four students took a plea. John pleaded guilty to four counts. Hes accused of inappropriately touching four children on separate occasions in a classroom. He was arrested in october. Under this plea deal this saves the victims from testifying in a trial and it saves lloyd a life sentence. He could serve up to 40 years in prison now. There will be a good deal of contrition because he feels guilty about what he did. Hes not here to make excuses. Hes scheduled to be sentenced on september 21st. More than 9,000 firefighters are busy across the state battling raging wildfires. According to calfire there are at least 21 major fires burning right now in california. Take a look at this map, you will see there are fires from the oregon border down to the Cleveland National forest near san diego. It also includes the rag fire burning in napa and solano counties. The rag fire is now 95 contained. Calfire says lightning strikes are to blame for a series of wildfires burning east of eureka. Governor brown mass declared a state of has declared a state of emergency. This will speed up help for the firefighters. His order requires all state agencies to provide assistance if needed. It also mobilizes the California National guard to help with disaster response. Yesterday, the state secured a exwraent from fema to help reimburse the cost of fighting the massive fire burning in lake county. That fire called the rocky fire continues to grow. Right now, its 12 contained. Some 60,000 acres have burned. Thats about 94 square miles or to put it in perspective, its an area twice of size of San Francisco. Allie rasmus explains some of the Biggest Challenges firefighters are facing. Reporter its the largest wildfire in the state right now. The rocky fire is the top priority. The agency is in the process of moving firefighters and resources from other wildfires to lake county to battle it. Our goal was to keep this fire south of highway 20. Because of the drought, the vegetation is very dry and its burning at an explosive rate. Over the weekend, we saw on the rocky fire 20,000 acres burn in just a fivehour period. Thats an historical unprecedented rate of spread for a wildfire. Reporter its large enough to create its own wind which makes fighting the flames dangerous and up predictable. The fire has burned 4 homes and is threatening 600 others. More than 12,000 people have evacuated the area since the fire started on wednesday. Some residents are leaving ahead of those evacuation orders and preparing themselves for the worse. We would rather go when were ready rather than have them say you have ten minutes just go. We have the family and we have the pets. Well rebuild. Reporter calfire is battling 21 fires across the state. Governor brown declared a state of emergency because of this active wildfire season. Calfire says that Emergency Declaration came with extra resources to fight the rocky fire. We did activate the National Guard with that state of emergency allowing us to continue the air resources, even more of them using air tankers from out of state. Reporter the plan for today, continue to battle the fire from the air, create more fire breaks and mope the weather conditions remain favorable. Vallejo fire tweeted this photo last night. There you see the huge plume of smoke off in the distance. About 75 people had tock evacuated from their apartment complex after a string of suspicious fire. The fires broke out on the third floor of the courtyard apartment on sim vau avenue early today. Firefighters say five people were trapped inside their apartments due to the smoke and fire. They had to be rescued. Police were called in to help find the cause of what turned out to be three separate fires. At this point, we are having our inspectors along with crime scene techs go through. Crews got everyone out of the building safely. Two people were treated for minor smoke inhalation. The red cross is happen helpth families helping the families. There is an investigation at a fire at the conoco fire in rodeo that caused a health alert. This is a cloud of smoke from the refinery. A spokesperson was not able to confirm the cause but said it started around 3 00 and crews put out the fire in about one hour. A team from the county was also called in to analyze the air quality.
