By the time our helicopter headed home this evening the amount of smoke had diminished quite a bit and containment has reached 20 but the damage is done. The rocky fire has been burning for six days and scorched 67,000 acres. So far two dozen homes have been destroyed. We get the latest from noelle walker. Reporter it is like a different day out here on the rocky fire than what i experienced yesterday. We drove around much of the perimeter except for the far northern section. The newest section of this fire. It looks so much different. Such a more calm atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of the fire. Earlier we made it to rocky road, thats the road that gave the fire its name to find out what is left. Reporter tonight we got our first look down rocky creek road where the rocky fire got its start and many homes met its end. Totally gone. Like a big hole in the end. I call it teeny tiny toilet town. Reporter population one. I saw a big plume of smoke coming up over there. Reporter before the flames came up. You could see the smoke on the ridge. Reporter a neighbor snapped these pictures hours later. All hell broke lose. It came over the bridge. Reporter sandy was forced to leave her tiny home in the path of a big fire. But this fire was a monster. Reporter a monster indeed. It tripled in size over the weekend and then jumped highway 20 monday afternoon. Scorching another 3,200 acres. What a difference a day makes. Definitely different than what we saw yesterday afternoon at this very time wasnt it. Reporter overcast sky, cooler weather and calm wind. It was like Mother Nature jumped on the fire line to help. That really kept the heat down. So i think that bought the crew some time to get some critical tasks. Reporter water dropping helicopters were able to keep crews in check. While the final damage is yet to be tallied. Just in this Little Valley we have one, two, three, four, five, six. That i know of that will are burned to the ground. Reporter those who lived through it know whats lost. The Fire Department may call them outbuildings or cabins or whatever but theyre peoples homes and theyre gone. Reporter and maybe those who lost it all. Its like a different place now. Reporter will find a place to rebuild from the ashes. So i asked the battalion chief earlier today are we out of the woods yet he said by no means were not out of the woods yet. When we Start Talking about the containment then maybe we can Start Talking about being out of the woods. But a day can change everything. If they get warmer weather tomorrow or in the next couple of days that can really change what happens here at the fire. Reporter are there any fighters on the line right now battling the flames or do they take the night off and come back tomorrow morning . Reporter oh no, theres no night off. They might get a little room to exhale today but there is no night off. There were some waiting to see if embers will spark a fire. Everybody is keeping a watchful eye. Reporter a massive relief with temperatures down they were in the 70s. Humidity double and triple what it was. If youre a firefighter this is what you want. This thing rolled through. Increased the humidity, dropped the temperatures and not only did it help today its going to help tonight. Its 63degrees in the area. Tomorrows forecast a little more help from Mother Nature. Youre up into the upper 80s again. Humidity down into the low 30 percentile range. But the last 48 to 72 hours have been really great. Tomorrow morning is going to be good. Theres word that it was smoke inhalation that caused the fire of a fallen firefighters. The fire captain went missings while scouting the fire. He was in the forest when the fire shifted. He was on assignment from south dakota and is survived by a wife and two children. Now to hayward where there was an emotional vigil in memory of a 17yearold boy who was gunned down early today. Ktvus amber lee wept to that memorial where her mother and father spoke at the memorial. Reporter everyone we spoke with had great things to say. People say theyre shocked. Candles lit for a young life snuffed suddenly. He finished school just a few months ago in june. His parents and sister taking comfort in the many friends and former schoolmates who attended the vigil in his honor. Thank you all for showing up. And showing how much my son meant to you. Reporter a family openly bereaving their life showing how much life matters. Nobody values a life more until Something Like this happens. Reporter deondre was walking with a 17yearold female present when he was female friend when he was approached by three latinos. Police say the motive for the killing is unclear. Gosh, amber just heartbreaking there in hayward tonight. Thank you. A major new twist tonight in a criminal racketeering case of shrimp boy chow. His attorneys are making allegations against ed lee and other political leaders. Chows attorney alleged his prosecution was politically tainted and selected. In his indictment, among the claims that ed lee took bribes. Heres a quote. He took over 20,000 from federal agents in his first four months in office and hit the ground running as major amount of funds. Theres absolutely nothing by the filings of chows attorneys that his 2012 campaign did anything wrong or inappropriate. The stage is now set for the first republican president ial debate. Together, were building a better california. Two weeks of searching for a missing San Francisco teacher came to a sad ending today in el dorado county. A body was found in a ravine near a dirt bike that belonged to ed cavinaugh. More on San Francisco at the school where colleagues got the news, Jana Katsuyama has the story. Reporter cavanaugh was a teacher here at the Continuation High School its a small school of only 170 students and the teachers say this 45yearold man was very well loved and respected. The day started full of hope. A legion of volunteers determined to find ed vacinaugh missing since july 17th when he took his dirt bike for a ride. But 11 40 a. M. The familys search party found a bike and a body at the end of a ravine. For searchers it was heartbreaking. I think its something that all of us were out there searching, if it was one of us who were out there ed would be the first one out there looking for us and not giving up. He was just that type of person. Reporter the type of person who did not give up on his students at downtown Continuation High School where he thought for more than a decade. Sharing his love of nature through backpacking trips and boat building projects. He worked really closely with his students not only to teach math and science but also to teach a love of nature. Reporter a pioneer in Educational Programs for San Francisco unified school district. Many of them have told us that being in his class, going on his camping trip was a life changing experience. Cavinaugh family has said, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of all who have come out to help search for ed. At his school he leaves a legacy of learning that lives on in his students. Were going to have to plan something to celebrate ed. Reporter the body has been taken to el dorado Corners Office for a positive identification and to find a cause of death. Were learning news, we have reports of a child being hit by a car at a National Night out event. Were told the driver took off. Its believed that the person is still at large. Residents of the tenderloin who deserved this world class park plan to have fun, to be healthy. And again that was just one of many National Night out events that were held tonight all across the bay area. After looking at video evidence, it happened back on november third in a waiting room in San Francisco hospital. Michael leuellen was found guilty of assaulting a man a 59 yearold man named fernando guanill. Luellen arrested guanill saying he attacked him with a cane. The jury did not buy it. Police in walnut creek say a stanford student who shot his exgirlfriend then himself built the guns himself from parts that he bought online. The deadly shooting happened at his home at this home rather last month. 19yearold claire orton was shot to death when she opened the door. 21yearold scott burdix they know shot and killed himself. It appears no one else knew of his plan. Both weapons found at the scene were homemade. The atf says it is legal to buy parts online and assemble then as long as the person is not prohibited from owning a weapon. For the third time this week an athlete from the Special Olympics in los angeles has gone missing. This time its a 28yearold man from the ivory coast. He was last seen around 11 00 last night. Leaving a hotel in inglewood where his team has been staying. He competed in golf. He vanished just as a second Special Olympics athlete from the ivory coast was found safe thats him there on the right. That 15yearold was discovered sleeping on a lawn in inglewood. The first athlete to disappear was a 44yearold bowler from albania. He had been missing since saturday when he turned up at the Hayward Police station. Tracking that system thats moved through the area brought a few showers today. You may have seen them on the windshields. It happened all throughout the day. Bright light scattered showers. Dropped the temperatures, increased the humidity and set us up for good conditions. Its mild out there. Not a lot of wind theres some wind. But not a lot. I think tomorrow morning as we pointed out the humidity in that zone is going to be in the 75, 80 range in many places very helpful. Big push of cool moist air tomorrow but slightly warmer tomorrow. Shes fighting for the five embryos that she and then husband finley froze together in 2010 before she underwent treatment for breast cancer. All of the cancer testimony is just a ploy. Its to get the courts sympathy. Reporter lee said doctors told her she could not get pregnant while she was getting cancer treatment. Now shes too old to get pregnant. The cancer only tell us why they walked into the ucsf offices back in 2010. The cancer itself doesnt hold any relevance to the outcome of the case. She doesnt now have cancer. Reporter finley who filed for divorce two years ago says the couple signed consent agreements to saw and discard the embryos if they split. Ucsf as turned her support behind finley. It was a form you check the boxes off very quickly in a very brief period of time. Everybody has done it in order to try to get a medical procedure done. Thats the type of attention she gave it. Reporter finley is able to get pregnant with someone else but lee is not. This is a case thats not decided by a jury but rather a judge. She is is going to be accepting documents from both sides by august 28th within three months she will be issuing a written decision. San francisco, im tara moriarty. The hayward fire chief is back on the job after he served a month long suspension without pay. Documents released today suggest he was nearly fired for drinking on the job and clashing with employees. A disciplinary letter shows that Gary Contreras drove a city vehicle five times last year. He has said he will no longer drink at work functions and said im very embarrassed but am better as a result of this. A dramatic rescue all caught on camera.
