Oakland Hills looking southward. You can see smoke resulting from a fire thats burning at edwards avenue and mountain boulevard in east oakland. This is just east of 580, about three miles west the oakland zoo. We understand that at least one acre has burned. Firefighters described it as having rapid rate of spread. Thats a steep hill that fire is burning on. This is a fairly densely populated area where a rock quarry used to be. In the past 10 or 15 years, i would say, many, many homes close together have gone up in the area. We have understand that some 30 homes are threatened. These are homes on campus drive. The fire is going to second alarm. You can see why firefighters are very, very careful asking to get this out. Again, we just learned that not only are fire crews being reinforced opt ground, they are also asking for more help from the air. We have been monitoring this live picture here in the studio. We have not seen any water drops on the fire here in east oakland just yet but we do understand that could be coming. A moment ago, mike, you and i were looking at this picture and we saw some active orange flames at the top of the ring. I dont see that orange flame burning right now but can you see an awful lot of thick black smoke rying from the hills in east oakland in the area of 580 and keller. Motorists on 580 are seeing and smelling the smoke. Well keep our eye on this situation. Well work to get more information from the fire department. This thing has been going for 15 minutes. You know the air drops are coming any minute. Ground crews are up there. And you can see this one jan, marcel, tweeting. This appears to be i cant tell exactly. I cant tell if a condo or a townhouse is on fire but thats a different vantage point, looking up at the fire that quarry as you said. Looks like the smoke is going straight up here, rosemary . From this vantage point, winds are fairly light. Im seeing winds up to 15 to 20
Miles Per Hour. It is 80 grease in that area and relatively low 80 degrees in that area and relatively low humidity. 30 . So thats not critical. And i just heard our producer say that it has gone to a third alarm. When you have cop doughs and apartments, think of all the cars. Hopefully at love them are at work or away from the fire with but with all the engines having to go up there, thats a concern. Again, to the left of the screen, we saw a little lick of orange there. This used to be open side. This area was developed and now there are a lot of condos and townhomes, fairly dense housing but it is surrounded by still an awful lot of what we would consider wild land. You see here from the trees and grass here in the pictures as well. As we are looking at this picture, we are seeing more black smoke. You know, obviously we are not firefighters. We cant read the pictures to pre cyst but when you see white smoke, thats good news and when we see more thick fires, that means that its still burning. As we understand, the fire has gone be to three alarm. Firefighters have requested more support from the ground and in the air. Sky fox is bringing us these live pictures. You can get a much better look. This is terrain that is very steep. This is when you are driving on 580 and look to the east and you see these hills go pretty much straight up. So that is the sort of elevation that fire crews are fighting. You also see, you know, a lot of crass and trees and open areas. Thats the brush that can burn. I mentioned this. We do these stories every year if not more. Firefighters are extremely proactive especially after the hills fire and they go door to door in this neighborhood and they check to make sure that homeowners have cleared a perimeter around their homes. I have friends who live in this area and they say they made us cut down the weed. We had the weed whacker out. Notices are left on the door. The notices say, if you dont do it, we will and well bill you. All that preventive work is coming into play here. Sky fox is giving us a much close are look at the situation. Right there are the bright orange flames. If there is a positive, it is open space. There are homes not on top of those flames but the fire is going up. There are homes on top of the ridge and apartments, condos are below where those flames are burning. I remember being down in sonolla. Cal fire was there. Morgan hill is another spot where theyve got air attacks and then, of course, santa rosa, at the airport up there, air, they have air attacks. As we look at the homes, there at the very top of the ridge, i think that might be skyline. Im not positive but skyline is the street that goes to the top of the ridge. There there is an awful way to go where the fires is now and where the homes are at the top of the skyline. But the fact this this is happening, crews are racing to the scene, the fact that the fire has gone to three alarms fairly quickly tells you that fire crews are very concerned about whats happening here. To recap, the fire has been burning for maybe 40 minutes or so, it seems. I would say 201215 when we first reported it. Maybe less than. That the flames are getting a little more intense there. Structure protection about to get underway for those homes up there. Engines are getting up there because is dot not look too accessible. Its picking up steam there now. You can see the billing there down below it. I dont know what that is. Looks like it was under construction. May have started and going up that ridge side there. That dense housing, the condos, homes, shallnow disappearing on the bottom left hand corner. There are plans to build out the rest of that area but clearly, that has not happened. At this point, looks like the fire started in what i would consider open space. May have been graded a bit. The fire was traveling upnorth. It reaches what i believe is skyline at the top. Sky fox is zooming in and giving us a look at another part of the fire. My question here is, nobody hikes in this area. There are no trails coming here. How did this fire start . Thats one the questions that investigators are working to answer. We are taking another good look. There are ground crews there. Yes. There are. I guess they started at skyline and hiked down to where the fire is. If you know oakland, this spot used to be an open space a rock quarry for a while and has become developed in the past 15 years or so. You can see fires here popping up in a couple of spots. Rosemary, when you see that, are these considered spot spires in are these embers . They dont look bad at all. Im seeing a gust up there to about 20
Miles Per Hour or so. As we know. That is one the big concerns with wind. Can definitely pick up embers and debris and start a new fire as it blows to it a new spot. But it does look like it is fairly light. At least the wind. But very dry. It does not take much. And once the fire starts, it can spread very, very rapidly. Again, we have not had a decent amount of rain in quite a while. And that vegetation is moisture starved. Until the rain comes back, any time it warms up, it dries out. We get the northeast winds what we call the offshore winds. That brings us fabulous weather and also the high fire danger. The stapling area is in the
Merritt College commune college in the oak land hills. Im still waiting for that first water drop. Once they get that going, that will help the firefighters tremendously. You can see the firefighters going down that single track. You dont want them get too far. So if the water does get to them, they can knock it down. You can see the fire engines by those homes which is nice to z they have been driving over the neighborhoods over the years since the 91 fires. The installation of water hydrant and more water available for the first 30 minutes, 45 minutes of this attack. The fire is now at a fourth alarm. So, again, this speaks maybe not to the exact spread of the fire but the urgency of the response it demands. The newest information is that the fire is now at four alarm. Oakland fire crews getting help. Here you can see firefighters putting water on the flames up above after having hiked down from what i believe is skyline. The three of us talked at length about the
Oakland Hills fire in 91. That did not happen in this area but maybe three miles from that spot. The one difference is that this is a fairly open area compared to mount claire where you had twisty roads and windy driveways and streets that, you know, as anybody parks on them, they became oneway streets because there are no ways for these engines to squeeze through. The fact that this is happening from what is happening just above
Housing Developments there in the hills of east oakland, unfortunately, the fire is traveling up and eventually would reach skyline. Clearly, we have crews and other resources working to prevent that. But, again, this is open space that we are seeing. If you read the space, there has been some grading done but there is an awful lot of trees and brush and dry grass that is exactly what firefighters worked so hard to keep residents away from their homes. We have friends, like i said, who live in this area who tell us about am inspection, crews coming to their door. You know, we had such a wet winter which was great to keep fire danger down but then so many firefighters will tell you, mike, that water just makes things grow. Thats why when you look at this picture, i like i could not pick a perfect spot and fire away. I dont see that. They are in an area where there is not a ton of vegetation. Luckily enough, thats not higher up in the hills or father north to the downtown area where the hills are, enough to spark a fire as you talked, gasia, about the 91 fire. These engines will stay throughout here. If i can correct myself, its not skyline, that main road thats above. Thats campus drive. So skyline is up from there. That major road that you seeing, thats right campus drive. Campus because, of course,
Merritt College is the staging area for fire cruise. Im helping you to get a better read on loathe case here in oakland. Thats a fire that started perhaps less than half hour ago here. If you are driving on 580 in east oakland, this is the smoke that you see. This is five miles before you get to the oakland zoo. The zoo is not threatened. We understand that there are some 30 home, i believe, that are threatened by what they are calling the campus dry grass fire. When you look at the shot, i feel like there are a lot more homes than 32. Most of those homes are below where the fire is burning. Rosemary, really, anybody can tell you that fire is burning up hill andey venetianly away interest that dense housing. Thankfully, it looks like. You correct me, i guess, if im wrong but at the base of that area, there is a roadway and then you have to go another step are farther in order to get to homes that have developed. So there is more space down. Im just looking, what are we, 100 yards from the top of that screen to where the pools were, to where the fire is active right there . Sky fox, you can see skies going down. Another car is coming and going. So make a lot of people are gone during the workday and for school. Whats the name of that street . Campus drive. Thats on the right hand side the screen. You can see the engine there, getting ready and probably in spot to do some structure protection right there. But, again, kind of the smoke just going up, rosemary, it is on the side of the firefighters right now. Right, which, we are very lucky for this. Because a strong wind, no matter what direction, it can fan the flames and can sent send the fire down. There is another good indication that the smoke is sitting still, thats another indication that winds are not strong. We have a red flag warning . For this area. For the east bay hills yes. And a fire down south burning in the
Los Angeles Area as well. Thats right. Again a fouralarm fire burning in the
Oakland Hills. Since the first time that we brought the pictures to our viewers, the smoke has grown greatly. We are seeing a lot more smoke and fire happening. We have been talking about the area. Now, we can talk to somebody who lives in the area. Lets bring on the phone a resident who lives nearby. Your name is sonia in. Yes. Where are you from where the fire is . Why we are off of edwards avenue and circle hill which is right below the quarry. The quarry is right behind our house. You are actually reporting wrong. That road above it is is not skyline boulevard. Its ridgement and collect kell tore
Merritt College. There are areas that you can
High Pressure up there that only the locals do. But we are looking right at it and whats burning is the old leona quarry. Used to be a quarry and they built houses there. Above it, they were letting it settle before they built any more houses. Whats burning is the area between the quarry and ridgement and that big mansion you see actually belongs, they say, to a
Football Player or something. So thats what that area is. I wanted to correct you guys. You keep saying skyline and thats not skyline. Its ridgement boulevard. Where are you right now. The freeway is our break. The freeway where we live on circle hill drive, the freeway, 580, is a breaker between us. So there is the park right at the base where you enter to the townhouse there is. Got it. And then the freeway. We stay in the community right behind burke halter park. Thats an open space between us and the freeway. We have a direct view. All of us are right here. First, we were able to see all the flames, now, the flames have gotten so big that we cant see anymore. The smoke is blowing in your direction, towards
San Francisco bay . Yes. Thats what it appears to be doing. Are you under any evacuations or have you seen any
Law Enforcement out there. No. No. They have it all blocked off that you cant get up keller. As you guys correctly reported, they are stage up at merritt. And if they go up simmons, they may try to block that of 0. There i dont know how far over it will get them to the fire. How concerned are you, sonia . Not that concerned right now. The only thing that would really probably affect us is the embers catching because we have a lot of rod wood and eucalyptus behind our home in a big grassy area. Thats the only big threat. For now, everyone is watching. Rosemary wants to ask you a quick question since we have you here. Looking in that area, the winds dont look like they are too strong although im picking up on a few gusts between 15 to 20
Miles Per Hour. How is the wind in our area . It comments in gusts, yes. It comes in gusts. Always kind of breezy in here. We call this little valley, it can be windy here. So its it goes with the tri here. Okay. But most of the people here have been here for more than 30 years. We kinds of we kind of know how it goes. A few years ago, the
Eucalyptus Grove caught, over about the i church there. Has it been about 15 years that that
Townhome Community went up across the freeway in front of you. A little over that, yes. Now, we have a good view of the fire. This is now going pretty good from our view. Are you talking about what you are seeing on tv or look out. No, we are looking out right on our backyard. My dad is on his ladder. We have pretty good view. Looks likes its blowing up hill. Looks like its going away from you. These are your neighbors who are affected. Sonia, i appreciate calling in and especially giving us a better location near campus drive as that main street here that we have been showing thats lining both houses. Thank you so much, sonia liveing there in east oakland, blocks away from where this fire is burning. We are now bringing you more information. We used to say that some 30 homes are threatened. Cal fire says about 50 are now threatened by what is now a fouralarm fire. The fire has grown definitely in size. We are seeing once again that very thick dark black smoke. We are seeing active orange flames as sky fox here pulls out and give us a much better look. This is 580, the main artery that goes to the city of oakland. You are on the east end of oakland here. The nearest exit would be edward, after that, keller. If you are driving on 580 and you are seeing smoke in the area, im guessing guessing peo are on 13 in the red wood heights and montclair neighborhood as well, the smoke is essentially being pushed west towards oakland, so we just heard from sonia who lives on the other side of the free way, she is seeing and smelling smoke from where she is. There you go. The first aircraft coming in. Looks like a cal fire plane, buzzing the fire, maybe trying to get a specific location or angle for the water to come in, fire retardant to come in. Thats a great sign because we have been waiting for this to get up get up. You about the sunol area where the helicopters and planes are. The only fire being put on is above the fire where the homes are. We have some firers coming down with the hose line as far as they can. Its dangerous there. All of a sudden, seems like the flames are pushing back down the hill. Now seem to be going back up. Im assuming that people who live along campus drive are told to either live or get ready to leave. Certainly, they are watching it. We just talked to sonia who is watching the fire burn away from her home, going up the hill. Now we have people liveing there on campus drive, looking out of their backyard, downtown hill and seeing flames advance towards them. We have been watching this fire march on and march upwards. Thats taking off right there. I would be very surprised if people who live here have not been told to prepare to evacuate or just evacuate their homes. Look, you see i see two, three, four streams of water being put, trying to be they are there for structure protection. These are official firefighters. I thought they are people with garden hoses which is what you see in situations like this but, no, these are actually fire crews. The actual staging is
Merritt College. Lets bring in ktvus tom viacar to ll us what is ppeng. Right is a very, very large plume of smoke. There is a lot of very dark smoke down on the lower end of it which could indicate two things, that that some various kinds of brush are burning,s which not unusual. But the other problem, of course, is there could be structures involved. I dont see this from our vantage point. Within a couple of minutes, well be there. The fire is very much concentrated in a single area and it is to the right of a number of homes. Now, there is some buildings above it as well. I suspect, at this point, they are protected for now. But as we get closer, we will be back in touch and well tell you exactly what we see. Thats the situation as we approach the fire. Probably less than a mile away. Tom, real quick, im assuming you said you were in the area of 35th and highway 13, on 580. Right. You can see this clear across oakland . Oh, yeah. This is a huge plume of smoke. Of course, because its so high on the hill top, it is visible from, you know, very great distances. And what we are doing, going up redwood highway at this point. And the last we are very close to
Merritt College which is where we are actually going to go, where we are told that the staging area is. audio difficulties . We might be losing tom. We are losing him right there. Once he establishes that picture reporter very dry. Tom va car sounds like he is a minute or two from the staging area. Well stay past 1 00 to stay more on this breaking news on a fire that has grown expo tensionally in size since we first reported it. It now has grown to four alarm, centered in the
Oakland Hills now in the area of 580 and edwards. Specifically, it is just above a fairly new
Housing Development there but the fire is marching its way up the hill and toward campus drive, it appears. We know that there are some 50 homes threatened. We see an awful lot of white smoke which i take as good sign, much better than the thick black smoke and the bright orange flames. Five or six minutes ago, we saw the fire getting steamed. I cant get a sense the wind. It goes up. As you mentioned, gassa, white smoke. Can you get some black smoke at the homes on the west side of the fire. So not erratic because it does not seem like its strong but unpredictable right now. Yes, with the pattern in place, it is very typical to have variable winds. Sometimes west and sometimes east but the flow from the northeast and the northeast general direction means that it is just a very dry wind out there. Its just its a lot drier than what we typically see if we had a cool pacific breeze. You can see it is having an effect on traffic there on 580. You can see how slow it is in that area for traffic going eastbound on that side as they can obviously see a large plume of smoke. A possible drop is about to happen there with the aircraft. In is the drop right there is the drop right. There a number of
Law Enforcement or
Fire Departments assisting oakland there. A positive sign here when you start seeing that happening. Especially because its just, probably 25 to 30 yards away from that home right there. At least on the east side the fire. Right. We were seeing firefighters with hoses out putting water on the land immediately behind the homes which is what you see. When you put down that fire retardant, it is like taking out a big marker and saying, this is the line to not cross. To the side of 580, looking up the hill, we have highlighted it for you. There in the area of edwards and keller, specifically campus dry is the main street here thats suspected. We have another fire retardant drop perpendicular to the first trying to keep the flames from reaching the homes up there along campus drive. The staging area is
Merritt College. I have not had a chance to check their calendar but i assume that they are in session. 50 homes are threatened. Now it is a fouralarm fire. That speaks to the acreage but also to the amount of response needed any time you say fire,
Oakland Hills. Here we are almost in october. You can understand why people, residents and firefighters are concerned. Yeah, 26 years ago, this coming october from the anniversary of the
Oakland Hills fire there. When you look at where they are dropping, thats probably the first priority. Where that is first drop going to be . Right now, from that first look, the priority is on the northeast side of this fire protecting those homes in that area. We have seen two drops come in. Now a chopper making its way to maybe dump some water down there although i dont see a bucket on this particular chopper. Maybe getting a better look at the fire. Fouralarm fire burke there in the
Oakland Hills. No official evacuations from
Law Enforcement agencies . I dont know if our newsroom can find that out. We are efforting to find out if evacuations are underway. Like i say, ooh if i am leaving there, im packing up and leaving if i happen to be home on this tuesday afternoon. We see swimming pools and back yards and that sort of thing that, look, aisle an honest. Those homes have a great view of oakland. You have a beautiful sight but also at the top of a ridge here and that is where it does appear that an evacuation is underway as the producer tells us. I assume if you a home that is backing up to the side of the campus, you are being told to evacuate. We have been covering this fire for you since about 12 15. At least thats how long we have been covering it. I know in
Oakland Hills, rosemary, people talk about eucalyptus and how it is extremely flammable, not native, a huge fire in the oakland hill fire. Looking at this picturesque picture, i see some eucalyptus. We have watched the flames come up just some but thankfully, not too much. And weve got a lot of smoke out. There looks like the fire is almost being pushed a little bit more horizon, thanksfully not vertical and right up the hill but the winds are generally light out. There there is a red flag warning for this area which means just very dry conditions and when a fire starts, it can spread very, very fast thankfully thats in a spot where it can be better. Winds kick up in the afternoon. That much hotter, that much drier. Relative humidity is blow 30 but could drop down to the teens. You can see the water drop here. I did see another chopper kind of appearing to be touching down. I wonder if the strategy here is to maybe put some crews on the ground and start at least that way, they dont have to go from the top down because thats a dangerous situation. That is what is happening as the cal fire chopper is putting down. Firefighters getting down with their gear, starting to maybe cut some lines and make a difference on that side of the fire hoping to prevent it from spreading in that direction. Rob roth is joining us now on the phone. What are you seeing . We are a little bit above a white plume of smoke i saw the first area tanker, did to make a drop. I see white smoke
@type":"Organization
archive.org
@type":"ImageObject
800
600
//ia600806.us.archive.org/10/items/KTVU_20170926_190000_KTVU_FOX_2_News_at_Noon/KTVU_20170926_190000_KTVU_FOX_2_News_at_Noon.thumbs/KTVU_20170926_190000_KTVU_FOX_2_News_at_Noon_000001.jpg
@type":"Organization
