KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am October 18, 2017

We can tell you from our experience here right now it is certainly much cooler this morning, with a little more relative humidity, more humidity in the air. Both of these very good signs for cal firefighters as they try to get control of the bear fire. The fire did settle down overnight. One of the things they wanted me to get across to folks, they received calls into the night up until midnight last night about people concerned that the fire was making a run. They say that does not appear to be the case. The fire has not made a run into surrounding areas. Firefighters telling me that they got calls as far away as saratoga and the fire is certainly not in that area. It seems that the fire has been largely contained or self contained, not that they have increased con tapement, but largely self contained in the area where it did burn yesterday. We are expecting that briefing to detail, again, how that fire developed overnight. We can tell you that it was smokier this morning at the command post where we were earlier. That command post in the last hour or so has been broken down. This is the new command post near redwood Elementary School. No update on containment. The last information that we had on containment and the size of the fire was 270 or so acres. About 5 containment. Now, again, coming back out to the live pictures, you can see these cal fire firefighters gathering. This is their briefing. This is the briefing where they learn how the fire developed overnight. We are anticipating now that it is just starting to day is starting to break, we are expecting that they will get a helicopter up. That will give them aerial survey. Remember how important a tool that is because they are able to get that birds eye view on the fire. See how it developed overnight. That will be some of the information funnelled into the briefing for the firefighters looking to gain control of the bear fire here in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Christien kafton with the very latest on the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thank you. We will talk to you later. We will go back to the briefing as it begins. We will take a quick minute to check weather. Steve paulson in today. I have never been so happy to go back inside and grab a jacket. Finally. It is cooler and the fog is back as well. Most of the coast. And it will be a cooler pattern. Tomorrow we can talk about maybe some rain making it down that far south. The forecast continues to keep rain all the way down to the santa cruz mountain. That would be tomorrow evening. We have a ways to go. 60s and 70s on your temps. Most observations in the Santa Cruz Mountains have cool conditions. 40 degrees, 42, 41. Unless youre up at 2600 feet. Most are 74, 80 , 73 . Not much of a breeze. Temperatures in the 40s. Low 40s. A couple observations 41. Felton says the same. Ben loma at 44 degrees. The fog has come back. Higher clouds mixed in but lower clouds on the coast. I think by tonight and tomorrow, it will lift and make it up to 2,000 feet as the front approaches. Low clouds here already in the north bay. The higher humidity has moved in on the coast and San Francisco. That means your air quality will be better. 45 on observation in oakland. 47 tiburon. A few upper 40s in San Francisco and low 50s. 40s and 50s on the temps around the area. Pretty close. There is the first system from the north. It has a ways to go but pushing in the fog. The water temps are cold. When you get an on shore breeze, that can ramp it up. Decent amounts forecast into lake county, Mendocino County with heavy amounts forecast by the gfs. We will see if that holds. It brings rain a little bit down to the Santa Cruz Mountains. On shore breeze in place. You get rid of the east shore rain so mostly 60s and 70s. Sal, what do you have for us other than the usual slow . We have the usual slow. Nothing major which is great, steve. We have minor things out there that might slow you down. For the most part were looking at commutes that are full strength. Right now were looking at the richmond bridge. Traffic on the approach will be slow. Although this is normal. No major problems getting through. Traffic is moving along okay. This is a look at interstate 80. It is taking about 40 minutes to drive between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. You will see the traffic is going to be busy in the area. There are no major problems. This is a look at the toll plaza. 20minute drive or so. And 880 is going to be moderate. Weve had minor things go on on the commute. A push back on the east bay commute. It is slow. A minor accident southbound 680 at 24. No injuries there. But things are getting crowded. 680 also slow in pleasanton. 7 06 back to the desk. Straight to the north bay where fire crews are making progress in containing wildfire as Recovery Efforts are getting underway now. The Sonoma County sheriff says that search teams are trying to find 53 people on the list of the missing after the fires. There are 200 searchers including members of the National Guard and state and local agencies looking for people in the fire zone. As the firefighters make progress in containing the fires, people in napa county are returning to homes and business. Wine makers are assessing the damage. Most wineries have already harvested their grapes before the fires began. For those wineries that were damaged, they say wines from previous vintages are typically stored at other locations. Now, in Sonoma County as homeowners go back to their burnedout properties, many are reeling by how much was lost and how little time they had to get out. One man has cell phone video from sunday afternoon. Their kids and dog were out playing in the front yard. He only had minutes to evacuate his family. Ill tell you what, im glad i was home. My wife never got a call. She never got any warning. And im lucky that i was home because yeah. We were lucky. Very blessed. Now, state insurance commissioner dave jones visited the area yesterday and had advice to offer. He has ordered Insurance Companies to cut the red tape, advance money for personal losses, and be flexible about documentation since so many people left their homes in a rush with nothing. Some schools in so no, maam accounty that have been closed because of the fires are reopening today. Classes resumed today at sonoma state university. The Alexander Elementary School district and wright Elementary School district in santa rosa also plan to reopen today. The Oak Grove Union School District will reopen on monday. Santa Rosa Junior College set to resume class on many. Many other School Districts in Sonoma County will remain closed through the week. Crews are watching for flareups after a grass fire broke out near dublin. It is fall the fallon fire. The latest report is that it burned 116 acres and is 75 contained. There was a mandatory evacuation of nearby homes yesterday but it has been lifted. Investigators are still working to find the cause of this fire. The time is now 7 08. Still ahead, providing help really needed for people affected by the north bay wildfires. We will tell you more about what the Santa Rosa Fire Department and Police Department are doing to help kids enjoy halloween even though they lost everything. Taking you out live to a briefing on the bear fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Lets listen in. Good morning, everybody. It looks like were establishing on getting a better signal. When we have it, we will bring it to you. We just talked with Christien Kafton. Crews have been working in the overnight hours but the nighttime and the smoke hampers the efforts. They cant do the aerial support that we saw during the day. The fire at 200 acres. Multiple structures burned. Lets move on to napa valley because they really want the tourists and people all over the bay area to know theyre starting to get back to normal in the napa valley. A lot of work to do but they want and need your business. Allie rasmus is live in downtown napa to bring us that part of the story. Good morning, allie. Reporter good morning, gasia and dave. If you drive around napa and particularly downtown napa, you will see fire trucks and emergency vehicles, a lot of utility trucks restoring power. There is a sense of a return to some sense of normalcy out here. They were straightening out the table cloths and getting ready for the morning customers, making the food that the bakery is well known for by the locals. They were open most of last week but because many people had to evacuate, they didnt get the flow of customers as they usually do. A lot of people stayed home because of the smoky air. And now that the three major fire thats have been burning in various parts of napa are contained, the tubbs, atlas and nuns fire, store managers and businesses across the area want to get out the message. Were back. We are back. Were back. And were functioning and almost every single business is at full speed. We have a Huge Block Party on friday. A lot of the local businesses downtown are participating. And its going to be fun. Yeah. Were back. Reporter now, outside of the downtown area, some of the vineyards have reported damage. Napa valley Vineyard Association has heard from half of the members and the chairman says about 30 of those who have checked in have reported some type of damage. It can be anything from damage to a sign to more serious devastation. But he also says most of the grapes in napa were harvested before the fire and already in storage and being processed. In another sense, a sign of a sense of normalcy, about 350 people lost power. Now the power is back on for 97 of them. Coming back to the electric baking company, you can see the sign out front says thank you First Responders, volunteers, police and pg e. The manager says while they had kind of an absence of customers, regular customers and tourists over the past week, they spent a lot of time packing lunches and snacks to deliver to the firefighters and the First Responders to show gratitude. We heard from a lot of businesses that have done the same over the past week. Back to you guys. Absolutely. Go up there and spend a little extra money. Thank you, allie. Halloween costumes are wanted for children affected by the north bay firefighters. Police are asking for the publics help to get children ready for halloween. The Department Posted pictures to twitter saying the department is collecting costumes. Theyre accepting new costumes in any size. Drop them off on sonoma avenue at the Police Headquarters. Great idea. Sal is watching the commute. I hope everyone is behaving for you. Sort of, dave and gasia. There is slow traffic out there. Lets start off with interstate 80 which is one of the slowest commute thats we have driving from the carquinez bridge to the maze. Slow traffic out there at the bay bridge and everywhere along the way. This is a look at interstate 880. We havent had it fill in yet. You had a little bit of time. 580 is looking good. As we back up, you can see 880 is already slowing out of san leandro towards hayward and fremont going south. By the banks the traffic is not too bad on 101 or 280. Lets bring in steve with todays forecast. You got me . Yes, sir. There you go. Cooler, cooler. The fog is back, moving in up and down the coast and making a push from west to east. Finally a pattern change here. It took a long time. We finally see the breeze turning more from the north northeast which it has been for the last eight days to west southwest eventually. The temperatures drop. 83 to 75. 75 to 67. 85 to 79. And 80 to 75 in san jose. Low clouds making a push even on the santa cruz coast. The bases we need to get it up around 2,000 feet. That looks like it will happen tonight and into tomorrow. A cold front is on the way. The good news is it is look at that 40 continues to drop. Most of these are around 500, 700 feet there. Are a few around 2500 feet that are warmer. But 41, 40, 44, 41, 41. Not much of a breeze. I can find a west southwest. There is one at 2600 feet. That observation 77 . 81 . So that is all good and the breeze is less than most locations. Less than 5 miles per hour. 50s and 40s on the temps. A lot of 40s around santa cruz. 45, 46. 47 in cupertino. Low clouds making a move on the marinsonoma coast. Over the bay as well. The low cloud deck is filling in on the santa cruz coast. Noticely cooler for oakland. A couple observations in the mid40s. One observation San Francisco at 48. I think downtown is 50. I dont know why it is not showing up. Tiburon at 47 degrees. The key is yesterday was a north northeast. Today south southwest. A south there. And an east there. We havent completely turned it around. With the on shore air now favoring on shore, that should make for much better air quality today. 50s and 40s on the temps. A few 30s. East bay temps, low 40s. Walnut creek at 42. San ramon 41. Out by the concord pavilion, 43 degrees. Upper 40s and low 50s around el sobrante and even into berkeley. 39 up in ukiah and around lake tahoe. If you are heading up to the sierra, today is fine. Tomorrow we will start to see increasing clouds and then the breeze will pick up late thursday, early friday. Could be an inch or two of snow above the 6500foot level. The temperatures will be dropping there as you go into friday. You see this low. It is retrograding. The front associated with it is right there. On its way. Not bad. Looks good. Get the tail end of that. It will weaken as it moves south. And as far as the timing goes, tomorrow afternoon, evening to the north. It may take overnight into friday morning before it makes it down towards the south bay. We still have a ways to go on the system. Usually on these systems the first one to come through is later than sooner. The rainfall looks good, especially to the north. We will see if it holds. Anywhere from a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch possible. If it holds to the santa cruz mountain,. 06 for Boulder Creek which is the best scenario we could ask for. Cooler today. Highs in the 60s and 70s. Hazy and low clouds on the coast. 60s and 70s there. We will continue this into tomorrow. Big fog bank tomorrow. In fact it will go well inland. Then cool mornings but sunny and warmer days, gasia, on the week. Thank you, steve. How many have been out to dinner with your family but also on your phone. The new approach that mcdonalds is taking to give families more one on one time. Welcome back to mornings on 2. It is 7 21. On call street, the dow closed just shy of the 23,000 mark but this h. No problem getting there this morning. Pam cook is back in the studio with this mornings monday business. The dow shot up 100 points this morning with a lot of the credit going to ibm. When the bell rang, ibms stock shot up 8 or about 12 a share. Thats after posting a Quarterly Earnings report that is much better than analysts expected. And want to take a live look at the numbers right now. There it is. Do you jones up almost half of a percent. 23,101. Up 103 points this morning. Again, a lot of that having to do with ibm. The nasdaq and the s p 500 hosting some gabes. Ebay and American Express are reporting earnings today. Roy price is accused of making lewd advances towards a producer in 2015. The big shopping rush that traditionally starts the day after thanksgiving may not be as frantic this year. Half of americans are less likely to shop on black friday this year. The study by the Consulting Firm reports 52 of shoppers say they are turned off by the crowds that day. Other reasons include the ability to find good holiday deals online that day and again on cyber monday. Shoppers also say they keep an eye on good bargains online all year round. Google is ditching an experiment that sparked a fire storm of criticism. It is removing a feature from the map application that estimates how many calories a user could potentially burn by walking a given route. Now, the goal was to encourage the healthy option of walking short routes rather than driving. But the calorie count was converted into the number of mini cupcakes a person could burn by walkingment the feature ignited backlash on social media as many called it a trigger for those with eating disorders. Many people accused google of trying to shame people into walking. Well, how many times do you fiddle with your phone when youre out to eat . Mcdonalds wants to you put it down and start paying attention to other people in your party. In singapore, mcdonalds has introduced mobile phone lockers in an effort to get parents and kids to put away the phone and Start Talking to each other. It came after a survey found that an overwhelming person of children and parents are distracted by smart phones when eating together. I have to ask my kids every single time that we sit down at the table, put the phone away. No phone at the table. It is rough. Pam it is true. I will say for parents with very, very Young Children in this generation, some parents use the tablet or the phone to get your 3yearold to sit still at the table. Now that 3yearold is now 13 years old and used to doing this. It is hard. Give them crackers like we did. Or crayons and a menu to scribble on. It is hard. It is hard. A good recommendation. Thank you, pam. People evacuated in the Santa Cruz Mountains because of the wildfire that is still burning this morning. Rear going to bring you the very latest on the fire fight and also the damage. Good morning. There is traffic that is getting busier around the bay area. This is the peak of the commute. And interstate 680 traffic will be busy. Hows it going down there . Thats good. Lica
