Just search for the bay area band together. Police say that three teenagers were arrested after a police chase in oakland this week and now they could behind be behind shootings. The chase started tuesday when officers try to pull over a silver mercedes. It ended with the mercedes crashing into two cars. One of the suspects jumped out of the car and he was hit by a passing car. Some guns found in the mercedes are being tested by police to see if they are connected to other shootings. A 25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of two escaped inmates who ran away from the palo alto courthouse. Tramel mcclough and joh bivens escaped from a bailiff. They were facing charges of holding up a Verizon Store in sunnyvale in february. They escaped in a waiting Toyota Corolla that they later ditched. Two people have since been arrested. They are accused of helping them escape. Later today the woman who rented a uhaul van is due in court. Attorneys representing josi Garcia Zarate say they will not call him to the stand to testify. The defense will wrap up the case today with closing arguments. The defense is trying to show the shooting death of Katie Steinle was an accident. Lawyers called a firearms expert yesterday who served for the canadian mounted police. He said because she is zarate did not have training or a motive and there was only a single gunshot and ricochet the shooting was most likely unintentional. Under the law, an accident is a dissent to a criminal charge. If there is reasonable doubt that the crime was committed and it was accidental then he would be acquitted. Municipal water officials will Start Testing the water at all 86 schools in oakland. Allie rasmus is in oakland with more on the concerns of lead in school drinking fountains. Reporter morning, Water Testing teams will be visiting oakland schools today. They will test high use fountains and faucets at the campus is. We are outside thornhill elementary in oakland. This is one of eight schools in the unified district with problems with lent in at least one faucet. The district started testing the water at all 86 campuses three months ago. A spokesperson says the contaminated faucet and other water sources have since been removed and they have been replaced or are being replaced. Concerns about contamination came up last year when the lead was discovered in the showers at a high school in oakland. Through a safe program there will be free testing done of the schools and the water sources. The work is starting districtwide today but a spokesperson says based on the testing none of these schools have led throughout the water system. They believe these problems were limited to specific positive and fixtures. They expect the testing to confirm what the district has found. Back to you guys. Police in concord identify two of the five suspects arrested after this weeks deadly shooting of lawrence johnson. Kristhiam uceda has been charged with murder, bryan sermenochachagua has been charged with hiding a gun after the shooting. The other suspects art are identified as juveniles. A memorial was set up near the high school in memory of the lawrence johnson. He was shot and killed by a passenger in a black sedan that pulled up near the School Campus after classes left out monday. Investigators are looking for a motive. Mike pence joined Texas Governor greg abbott at a Memorial Service for the Church Shooting. He also visited survivors who were still hospitalized after the attack. He spoke with First Responders including the two men who chased down the gunman. Vice president mike pence offered comfort to people who say they are trying to come to terms with what happened in their smalltown. I am just glad not to be one of those poor families. Apple has offered to help unlock a cell phone owned by the gunman but so far officials have not asked for assistance. A santa rosa man whose house was destroyed in the fires received a phone call yesterday with someone offering a government grant that said the money would go through western union. We have transported 275,000 passengers and it has never happened before. The shuttle was being tested yesterday when the driver of a semi truck backed up and hit the shuttle. No one was hurt. Operators of the driverless shuttle say that the vehicle did what it was supposed to do. The sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped. Mark tamayo is in today for Steve Paulson. We still have some scattered rain with a few showers that the persistent heavy rainfall that showed up in the north bay has moved out to the east. Here is the latest with the radar. There is coverage changing quite a bit. Near san rafael and marin county we have some coverage also checking around interstate 80 we have some rain near American Canyon. These are quickly moving showers across parts of the bay area. San francisco, berkeley and emeryville not as much action but closer to redwood city we have a few scattered showers and still some shower activity to report in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Boulder Creek possibly around highway 17. Current numbers are in the 50s to the lower 60s. San jose is warm at 62 and San Francisco is 60. Bigtime rain totals for the coastal hills into Sonoma County. Checking in on santa rosa, they have over one inch, san rafael. 77, redwood city. 21 and San Francisco. 20. We could be adding to those totals in a little bit. We have scattered showers for the forecast today and we are holding off for a chance of showers with highs in the 60s. Lets check in with sal and hopefully we dont have any problems on the roadways. We have had a lot of smaller issues turning into bad traffic jams but a lot of what i have seen is slow traffic. In the south bay for example you could say one freeway was affected but all of them are slow. 280 is slower through san jose right where this camera is located. I always think that is funny. The camera shows things are green and happy but up the road you will see red with the slow traffic. It is pretty typical and slow on the peninsula with a couple of spots where you are stopping. If you are driving on 80 westbound traffic is slow. This morning i got tweets that set eastbound 580 headed away from the bridge has been super slow with an earlier accident. Coming down to join the other slow traffic on the east shore freeway has been kind of a challenge. More than one hour to drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze and then you have to add 25 minutes at the bay bridge. Lets get back to the desk. Many roadways are still wet and the rain overnight is the cause of Numerous Accidents across the area. Christien kafton reporting on a number of crashes including one deadly accident. Over my shoulder you can see the damage left by the fatal accident from last night. We witnessed another accident that happened on the other side of the concrete barrier in the southbound lanes. Traffic is now resuming its normal activity and patterns. Our photojournalist saw this all happen and we got video of the aftermath. Two trucks collided around 5 15. There were no injuries and it is unclear if the roads played a part. Chp was on scene investigating reminding everyone to take it easy on the commute. Overnight chp investigating a fatal crash. They have not confirmed if rain was a factor in the crash. The big rig crashed after 10 00 here on highway 101 near northbound North San Pedro road. The big rig slammed into the Center Divide and caught fire. The fire was coming from the front and rear of the big rig. An alert was issued because all northbound lanes were blocked with three southbound lanes of 101. There is no word on the identity of the person who was killed in the crash. The alert was canceled at 3 30 after all lanes were reopened. We are expecting a crew to come out this morning to go ahead and begin repairing the Center Divide. Problems for people who lost their homes in the north bay wildfires. Homeowners are concerned the rainsoaked ground could slide or toxic ash could end up in their cleanup property. One man who lost his home saw this as an opportunity to help the community by offering to supply them with straw barriers that keep the ground in place and absorb toxins. We have lived here for five years. We did not meet our neighbors but now i have. It is great and the community is even stronger. This man was surprised to find fire crews managed to pull a few items out of the flames including artwork, some wine and a ring belonging to his late mother. Firefighters could see a lot of flames and smoke before they even arrived. Nine adults and three children were able to safely escape the townhome. There were no injuries reported and the cause is under investigation. A reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of two escaped inmates who ran away from the palo alto courthouse. Tramel mcclough and john bivens escaped from a bailiff at the courthouse. They were facing charges of robbing a Verizon Store in january. They escaped in a waiting toyota camry that they later ditched. Two people have since been arrested accused of helping them escape. One of the women accused of renting the uhaul van will be due in court. Two of the five suspects were arrested after a 17year old was shot. Kristhiam uceda has been charged with murder and bryan sermenochachagua has been charged with hiding the gun after the shooting. The other three suspects are juveniles. Another 30 minutes at the toll plaza. Lets bring in mark tamayo with the weather. We have noticed though showers developing rapidly and then moving out within 10 to 15 minutes. That is what we have been noticing over the past couple of hours with rain moving through. The main front came through late last night and this morning. On the radar images now in the north bay you can see from san rafael closer to vallejo we have yellow and orange indicating a heavier downpour. If we were to put an estimate on this, this one around i was 37 has been estimated at one inch per hour. That is the current rate. Not as much coverage for portions of the east bay. San francisco and oakland are mostly cloudy today and as we back up the maps near san mateo and redwood city. We do have some clouds in place but as we were mentioning we have rain in the south bay. In the Santa Cruz Mountains as we come closer this is what i want to show you. Near san jose we have some coverage. For the most part san jose did not pick up much rainfall so far but now we are changing that with rain working into the picture. The current numbers are in the 50s to the lower 60s. 61 in San Francisco, fremont 58, livermore 59 and santa rosa 54. The bigger totals for the Santa Cruz Mountains and north bay coastal hills in the hills of Sonoma County over three inches. Look at these reports with santa rosa. I have to wait for my immune system to recover before i go back to my normal life. During recovery the teens have been spending time in this Innovation Lab. This is all different parts. They showed us the innovations trying to make hospital life more convenient. The patient can respond if it is okay for them to come in. The teens designed a pain meter maid with three circuits. It is especially useful if a patient cant speak. We are thinking one and a half hours to drive into San Francisco. When you get to San Francisco it is not looking too bad but it has been moderately heavy. This is a look at the san mateo bridge with slow traffic for most of the way. In the east bay at 680 we are very slow from the venetia bridge traffic is solid. Southbound 680 is mostly slow from the venetia bridge into walnut creek. Lets get back to the desk. Concerns over lead contamination in oakland schools has prompted the district to test the water. Allie rasmus explains how there will be more testing done. Reporter the testing is supposed to start today. East bay will be sending water testers to the campuses to check on the high use fountains and faucets. Thornhill elementary in oakland is one of eight and the unified district that had problems with one drinking fountain. Here is a picture of it provided to us like a parent. They say there was lead contamination in the fountain. It is no longer in use and it has an out of service im. The district started testing the water at all campuses three months ago. A spokesperson says the contaminated faucets and other water sources have been shut down as you can see here. They have either been replaced or now being replaced. Concerns over contamination came up last year when lead was discovered in the showers at a high school in oakland. Through a state program there will be another round of testing done and then that is the work starting districtwide today. Parents say that the extra testing is a good idea. My daughter came home and said the kids were told they couldnt drink from the water fountains. That was the first i heard of it. It is definitely concerning. This is a great school and they protect our kids. If they say it is okay that im sure it is. Reporter a spokesperson for the district says based on the test none of these schools have lead throughout the system. It is limited to specific faucets and fountains like the one here at thornhill.
