But a long way before the city delivers on the promises. With a table full of her Staff Administration department the mayor invited media this morning to her office. To clarify what oakland has accomplished since the fire. And what needs work. The city plans to do more than two double its inspectors staff at the end of 2018. None are on staff yet. The Fire Department is working to catch up on 1000 backlog mandated inspections. Oakland plans to implement a digital interdepartmental system to show information on Problem Properties is more easily shared. The families are asking why it took a fire to get the city to get things done. The improvements we are making our improvements we should have been making as a normal course of business. Taking advantage of new technological advances. New business practices. But obviously the tragedy gave us a focus and a sense of urgency. She said they are working to implement longterm solutions. The city is working to update ordinances to protect tenants. It isnt quite there yet. The mayors goal has been to bring on permits at buildings up to code while avoiding displacing people. Getting owners to come forward and work with them to make building safe. San Francisco Police have reason to feel somewhat under siege given a string of recent violent incidents including one today from sky fox. You can see Police Vehicles responding to the twin peaks off the observation area this morning. A police car saw a suspicious vehicle with a person or people who might have been casing vehicles parked on twin peaks. Officers were in the area conducting an investigation. We are not saying what led them to the suspect vehicle during that process. In this case the officer was not struck. It is not the first incident where an officer has been hurt on the job. The police have a lot more information. They cannot release at this time. They were up there looking for something when the incident occurred. Uc Berkeley Students should be alert at night. A series of street robberies targeting victims near the campus. Henry lee joins us live over uc berkeley. Police believe the same robbers might be involved. Based on the timing and location of the robberies they believe the same robbery crew might be responsible. They are warning students to take precautions. Reporter over the past week five College Age Students at uc berkeley have been robbed. They are hoping others dont fall victim if they are distracted by the stress of school or the devices in their hands. The victims were college age and walking alone. Some might have been distracted or walking with their phones visible. We saw the student in a dead stop transfixed as she tapped out a message on her cell phone. I told her someone could have snatched her device. Technology is distracting and can be dangerous. I see a lot of pedestrians lancing at their phones. Or other electronic devices. I worry that they are vulnerable to theft or getting attacked. Reporter of these five robberies or attempted robberies most of them happen on the north side one happened in the south side. Debate getting heated in the Senate Finance committee with the democrats for the size of the bill as a giveaway to big business and high income taxpayers. This tax cut is for the rich. If democrats were not such obstructionist and understood the power of lowering taxes we would be able to get their ideas into bill. The bill favors corporations. At the expense of small business. The white house argues cutting corporate taxes provide a kickstart to the economy and create new jobs. First of all, Artificial Intelligence and the current form and we think in the future form cannot duplicate empathy. We will need to have humans at various stages of the workflow. Whatever that workflow might be. I think there is always going to be a place for human workers. Ai will make a lot of things simpler. Quicker and more efficient. But not complete. You dont think they will totally get rid of the whitecollar force . I think you will have a lot of backlash that robotic voice even if they improve that kind of programming. We will still really desire that human in a lot of cases. We have seen some forms of ai recently. What could we see in the near future . There is probably two specific areas. Im sure the list will be not even exhaustive in the next five years. The first is vehicles. That has been the plague in Silicon Valley for the last couple of years. I think that will be both on the road and in buildings as you are showing in your video right here. The second area i think that will be promising in the future near future and distant will be the medical area. The idea that Artificial Intelligence properly trains given the appropriate rules if you will, what to look for and what to filter out. We will be able to help a doctor and the Nurse Practitioner diagnose a patient quicker. And thus saving lives. I think the medical arena is right for this whole endeavor. Where do you think prominent Silicon Valley leaders are coming from when they say this could be disastrous or destroy humankind . Where do you think they are coming from with that . Im an optimist. That is where my foundation is. Let me address what they are saying. I think there is Artificial Intelligence is right for abuse. I think we need to build in stops or mechanisms that can halt a particular series of Artificial Intelligence induced activities. So that a human can inject him or herself into the decision process. If we take humans out of the loop completely, then that will be a recipe for major problems down the road. It is in fact going to be a balancing between all of this wonderful programming and the human nature. The human spirit. You are touching on the next question how would we police this . We need to make sure both our students and our workers are trained in what they will come up against. What they are going to see in the workplace in terms of Artificial Intelligence. We need to make sure management is trained into the idea of making decisions within this workflow at a quicker pace. And being able to start and stop and Artificial Intelligence process for the sake of a business product or service so that things are not disturbed. I do think it is going to be a benefit in some areas. To include Law Enforcement by the way. I think the humans need to be in key locations within the ai process for evermore. How would they accommodate that number of people as well as parking on ramps and off ramps from the freeway. It would be a nightmare for traffic and transportation. We did phone banking and doorknocking in oakland. We had an amazing team of 14 people out either on the phones or on the doors six days a week. In the end we talked to over 2500 people. It was all over the city of oakland and most neighborhoods. With an emphasis it was different from the chamber of commerce poll which was done a few weeks before. They only talk to 500 people. We talked to over 2500. Are you surprised 82 said no not in our neighborhood. We want the as to stay in oakland. We want them to stay the right way in east oakland in a way benefiting east oakland with Equitable DevelopmentCommunity Stabilization and good quality jobs that are benefiting residents. Have you gotten a reaction from the mayor who would like it elsewhere as well . We released the results today. We are anticipating hearing from them some.
