One of two inmates who escaped from a courthouse in palo alto earlier this month is back behind bars tonight. After a chase and shooting in stockton. Paul chambers explains police found both escapees but only made one arrest. Reporter for more than two weeks, Santa Clara County Sheriff Deputies have been searching for 47yearold john bivins and 46yearold Tramel Mcclough after they escaped into a waiting vehicle from the palo alto courthouse on november 6th. Its been an Ongoing Investigation ever since with them following leads all over the state of california. Reporter that search led deputies to stockton tuesday night where officers spotted both men. Once officers tried to arrest them, mcclough ran leaving bivins behind. After mcclough exited the vehicle, he was the original driver, tried to flee on foot and was later caught. Bivins then entered the drivers seat of the car and took off. [ gunfire ] reporter thats when chp officers started shooting at bivins. Its unclear if he returned fire. No officers were injured, bivins got away. He is seen here getting gas after the shooting. He was driving a green 1999 for explorer plate 7tyy505. Police say if you see him, call 911 and dont engage with him. He escaped custody. He led chp on a vehicle chase so he is highly dangerous determined to avoid capture. In San Francisco the jury in the kate steinle case went home without reaching a verdict. They will be back at it monday morning. They received the case after 12 days of testimony and spent three more hours at the courthouse today. The prosecution says Jose Inez Garcia Zarate intentionally fired a gun on San Franciscos pier 14 on july 1st, 2015, killing steinle as she walked arm in arm with her father. Defense attorneys argued the killing was nothing more than a tragic accident. The mayor of oakland says she is ready to end future cooperation between Oakland Police and federal immigration agents. Ktvu Crime Reporter henry lee says she wants to sever ties because she thinks ice is deceptive about motivation. Reporter Oakland Police provided Traffic Control during a raid in west oakland back in oakland provoking controversy. Now oakland mayor schaaf says she no longer wants her Police Officers anywhere near ice agents. This recent incident has demonstrated that even that type of presence is creating the public impression that we are somehow condoning ice activities. Reporter the Oakland Police chief agreed to help because federal investigators told her it was a criminal investigation into Human Trafficking involving juveniles. But documents show a guatemalan man not connected to any crime was held for being in the country illegally and is being deported civilly. This is not only mission creep. Its also mission deception. Reporter the east bay express reported that there have been no convictions in federal court for Human Trafficking cases in oakland over the past decade. I know that cases are difficult to charge but that analysis was surprising. Reporter the mayor says, bottom line they should be able to trust their officers and all immigration issues should be left to the feds. I. C. E. Declined comment. Its more important that our immigrant community in oakland feels safe that they feel like the Oakland Police department is part of oaklands sanctuary city without question. The chair of the citys Privacy Advisory Commission is among several residents who filed the complaint. Californias attorney general and Alameda Countys District Attorney today announced an 8. 9 million settlement with directv. It resolves allegations that directv improperly disposed of large amounts of hazardous waste. Investigators say they dumped battery, electronics and other materials into dumpsters and that the Hazardous Materials then ended up in local landfills that are not supposed to receive those items. One of the locations was the Waste Management facility on davis street in san leandro. Two former students from Presentation High School in san jose are alleging the school covered up reports of sexual abuse for decades. The women spoke with their attorney today at a news conference. But as ktvus ann rubin explains, the all Girls Catholic School strongly denies any wrongdoing. Reporter the pain is fresh though the allegations of sexual abuse by a Presentation High School teacher happened three decades ago. When i sent my first letter reporting that he had groped me and shown me pictures of a naked woman, the administration didnt even respond. Reporter catherine lahaine says she tried for years to report what happened when she was a student. First to the school, later to police, child protective services, and the catholic diocese. But it was only this fall after she wrote an article for a National Publication that she felt she was finally heard. Reporter sheryl hodge and marshall spoke on behalf of a friend who was allegedly abused by the same teacher in the 90s. She said they went together to report what happened to administrators at the all girls school. Not only are we not getting help. In a statement today, they say, quote, for anyone to suggest that phs had in any manner covered up or condoned any instance of sexual abuse is an outright lie. In fact, they say, they conducted an investigation 25 years ago, though they cannot discuss the outcome. Still, the attorney representing the women says more should have been done. The response by the administration at Presentation High School was to protect the image and reputation of the school and cast the safety and welfare of the students to the side. The teacher in catherine lahaines case died last year. New york law requires companies to notify the state attorney general if theres any massive theft of private data. Uber revealed the data breach yesterday but they say it actually happened last year and affected some 57 million accounts. The information stolen included names, email addresses and phone numbers of riders along with the drivers license numbers of some uber drivers. Ubers newly hired ceo says theres no evidence the stolen data has been misused but in the wage of the attack uber fired their head of security. In the east bay General Electric plans to play off at least 100 people from its Software Division headquarters in san ramon. Tonight a search is under way for three American Service members who are still missing after a navy cargo plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of japan. It happened last night southeast of okinawa. Eight crew members were rescued and tonight all are listed in good condition. The u. S. Navy says the cargo plane was bringing passengers and cargo from japan to the uss Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier when it went down. Theres still no word on what caused the plane to crash. It is the latest in a series of incidents involving the u. S. Navys 7th fleet including two major collisions involving ships that killed a total of 17 sailors. On the eve of this thanksgiving, 20yearold james woods of Tehama County and his father james senior are grateful to be alive. James was driving his dad to the post office last week when the rancho tehama gunman drove up alongside them and started shooting. James junior was hit near his mouth and his jaw was shattered. He has been recovering in the hospital for the past 8 days. But he says he is not focused on his pain. On his pain. Im more worried about the people who dont have family. Theyre gone. James family has set up an online phraser to help pay for his expenses but james is insisting that people donate to the other victims. Oakland mayor libby schaaf is asking homeowners to help the homeless in a unique way. She wants people to offer spare rooms and rental units to those who need shelter. Its an idea she first told ktvu about two months ago during our special on homelessness in the bay area. She also brought it up in her state of the city address this month. Mayor schaaf encouraged people to open up their airbnbs and fix up their back units. This is the type of thing that people should consider doing when they have space that isnt being used. The mayor says more than 250 landlords are now helping out but she wants at least 100 more. According to an Alameda County survey, earlier this year, homelessness in oakland is up 25 from last year with nearly 3,000 People Living on the streets. Art drawn in the sand. He does this pretty much a capella and, um, and his style shows through every time. I think he did a very good job. I think they worked all day to do that. To see her see someone else drawing on the sand, i have seen them draw on the sand before, to make such a big display out of it, it warms my heart to see them get excited about it. So you should be fine. So overall, one of the better travel thanksgiving holidays that i can remember. Not just locally but nationwide. All the airports and hubs are looking clear.
