One day when the pain was once again unbearable. I went back to the emergency room that i originally went to and a doctor rushed in and basically let me know that the night that i had came in, the radiologist wasnt on board. The person that reads the ct scan. So they sent it out to another hospital and it was misread. They let me know that they have to rush me into emergency surgery because my appendix was on the urge of bursting. I was terrified. I never had any type of surgery. Surgery went well but recovery took time and her job did not provide Recovery Time or sick time. Im the only one that provides for me and my son. I didnt have any source of income coming in. I remember coming to the point that i was very stressed out. Wondering how am i going to pay my rent or get bills paid in the house. Reporter she went to the Welfare Office but told she didnt qualify for government help in her desperate situation but the man helping her didnt give up. He left. I remember sitting at the desk. He came back and told me i have great news to tell you. He told me about season of sharing. Reporter she had never heard about the fund t was started in 1986 to help families in crisis with housing and emergency needs. She filled out the paperwork and waited for a call. I never got the phone call. So then when i didnt get the call, i was thinking, okay, i didnt get approved. So then i really started stressing out. And rent was almost due. I didnt know what i was going to do. And i went to check my mail. And i was on the phone with one of the sisters from my church and i seen the envelope from season of sharing. And i was like oh my gosh. And then we prayed. I open touchdown and it said i was approved. I remember crying and praising god and thanking him for providing. Reporter the season of sharing fund paid for her rent that month and got her over the rough spot. Today she is back on track, ready to celebrate the holidays. I was in a time of need. But i thought about it and i was like, wow, there are probably people going through worse than what i did. Reporter melody is now working and planning a move to Southern California for a new opportunity with her church. She says she is excited to start this new chapter in her life. Thank you, claudine. Cal fire says the wildfire burning in ventura and Santa Barbara counties is now 86 contained. The thomas fire has become the largest now in state history. It has burned more than 281,000 acres and destroyed 1063 structures, mostly homes. Officials are still hoping to have it contained by january 7th. C. , five people died from opioid overdoses in a single week. The victims ranged in ages from 22 to 44 years old. Reporter it was a deadly week in Fairfax County but only a small part of a much larger drug problem. The Life Expectancy at birth is down 1 from 2015. It dropped last year as well. What is contributing to it is more concerning than the number itself. Officials say drugs, opioids in particular, are a significant factor. About 64,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016 according to the cdc. Thats 22 higher than the year before. And the rate of Overdose Deaths when it comes to synthetic opioids doubled from 2015 to 2016. Overdose deaths are categorized as unintentional injuries, now the third leading cause of death, ranking higher than strokes and alzheimers and only outranked by Heart Disease and cancer. Jamies daughter was 17 when she overdosed on opioids. I miss my daughter helen every second of every day.
