Authorities say a month long investigation uncovered a drug ring sneaking methamphetaminelaced mail into a San Mateo County womans jail. Ktvus ann rubin is live outside the Correctional Center with how the drug was smuggled in. Reporter investigators say the lessors and envelopes had been dipped in lick get letters and envelopes had been dipped in liquid methamphetamine and sent to the facility. There are 6 people in custody and they are searching for four more all part of a massive conspiracy to sneak drugs into the maple street Correctional Center in redwood city. One of our sheriffs correctional officers, while distributing the mail, noticed that a piece of mail appeared to be tampered with. Reporter as it turns out, the envelope and its contents had been dipped in liquified methamphetamine. Once its liquified, essentially any paper source can absorb it. Reporter a month long investigation later turned up more meth mail. Authorities now believe suspects on the outside were sending the druglaced paper to female inmates for sale on the inside. People apparently chewed the paper to ingest the drugs. Once the drugs came into the jail, then the people who had them were also distributing, further distributing it to others. Reporter search warrants in burlingame, daly city and San Francisco turned up 10 ounces of methamphetamine and thousands in drug proceeds. They also resulted in the arrest of 54yearold richard wood. It was going on for some time. We dont know exactly how long before. But certainly, the investigation revealed that there were several such mailings that went to the jail. Reporter as for the five inmates who have been re arrested in connection with the crime, they could get years tacked on to their sentences. Some people think they are going to get away with it in the jail. But the fact of the matter is, there are more eyes and ears on people who are in custody than one would imagine. So its really a foolish undertaking. Reporter again, four suspects in the case are still at large. The others are set for a preliminary hearing on january 8th. Alyana . Today we learned it was all started by a very young child. We have new information from new york on the victims. This loss is unprecedented. Reporter a community in mourning after a fire kills 12 people in this bronx Apartment Building, started by a child who was playing with a stove. It started from a young boy 3. 5 years old playing the burners on the stove. Reporter the boys mother heard him scream, saw the flames and ran outside with him and his sister. The front door was left open causing the fire to quickly spread. Fire travels up. The stairway acted like a chimney. It took the fire so quickly upstairs that people had little time to react. They couldnt get back down the stairs. They couldnt escape. It was just two people, my sister and the baby eight months old. The smoke, i guess, overcame her. Everything happened so quick. Reporter other residents were forced out to the fire escape waiting for help. You were on the fire escape for halfhour . Yeah, im tough. Why . Because [ indiscernible ] they put the ladder, they have to take the kids one after the other. Literally screaming and we knew it was trouble because people were screaming, fire, help, fire, help reporter even after escaping, survivors faced the bitter cold. Many had no coats. One man ran out in his longjohns with no socks or shoes. It is the time of year where people celebrate and certainly here we have people who have lost their lives, lost their homes, lost everything.
