A lot of people here today chose to give back today by volunteering their time to community projects. Our reporter traveled around oakland were hundreds of people were out honoring doctor king today by helping others. Reporter throughout his life, dr. Martin luther king jr. Often tried to encourage people to get back to their community. Many people throughout the bay area today embraced that message. Schools may have been close today for the holidays, but the campus of life academy was buzzing with people creating a garden here. This was no day off for dr. Martin luther king jr. Day, but a time for community service. Having people come on mlk day is definitely important to the legacy of the holiday. Reporter this was one of many were people volunteered their time. The garden here will eventually create herbs and vegetables for cooking classes. The civil rights leader often ask what are you doing for others, and almost 50 years after his death comes some answers. We believe peace between all people and not just based on your agenda, race, and i feel like we can all come together. Reporter while racism feels more prevalent these days, the message of racial unity still resonates. I think with the times we are going through right now we should become more united, and i think that makes a really Strong Community here in oakland. A man accused of stealing a box truck in San Francisco let Highway Patrol officers on a chase this afternoon that ended in the south bay. The chp said that at one point the driver began going the wrong way on highway 237. The chase ended when the truck crashed near the sunnyvale golf course. The suspect ran away and officers were unable to find him. The truck was stolen when a work crew was delivering appliances. Also in sunnyvale, police say they arrested 23yearold henry reed on child molestation charges. A 17yearold girl told School Officials that reed inappropriately touched her and forced her to do the same. He is a parttime music assistant throughout santa clara county. They want to know if there are other potential victims. There is an internal investigation after officer shot a man outside of the Police Department last night. Police say about 10 40 pm an armed man fired shots outside of the Police Station on City Center Drive yelling repeatedly he wanted the officers to killing. A crisis negotiator was called in and talk with the man for almost an hour, but the man would not drop his gun. The police that he advanced on them and that is when officers fired a shot. The victim was taken to the hospital, and he is expected to survive. The Highway Patrol is investigating a shooting that happened earlier today on interstate 280 in San Francisco. As our reporter reports, the shooting left at least three people wounded and called the freeway to be shut down for hours. Reporter the chp open up the freeway just before 7 00 a. M. This morning. The traffic is moving pretty smoothly here. For about four hours overnight, all southbound lanes of 280 were shut down to traffic because of an investigation of a shooting that happened. That shooting happened next to the southbound offramp. Investigators spent the Early Morning hours looking for evidence and showcasing. That chp said there was between three and six victims involved in the shooting. What is also still unclear if whether or not the victims are all in the same vehicle. We are just investigating and collecting evidence and making the proper arrangements. Reporter according to the chp it was a victim of the shooting who call the police to report the shooting. They were able to drive himself to San Francisco General Hospital where investigators have been trying to speak to them about what happened. The shooting on the freeway overnight shut down the southbound lanes close to Mission Street before the freeway was opened up again just before 7 00 a. M. This morning. Doctor said the babies are doing well but it is a long road ahead because the babies were born three months early. Governor browns controversial plan to build two massive tunnels underneath delta is being scaled back. There are reports that the Governors Office has been negotiating with state lawmakers on a plan for just one tunnel as opposed to two tunnels. Governor brown has only a year left in office and the 17 thats 17 million project is still facing a number of hurdles. I think the question will be if they scale back the project to one tunnel, i think that is the same one we have been asking for a long time and that is how are you going to operated .
