Underway this week. Joe fonzi is in route. Looking forward to his reports down there at pebble beach. An exciting week for the people along the peninsula as the Golf Tournament gets underway. I woke up this morning and i had the cup of joe, the twitter feed going and i saw a tweet from the giants last night. Coming soon. Number 25 with a strobe light. You hear crowd noise under it. The crack of a bat. He is not in the hall of fame. Didnt make it this last chance. But barry bonds, does he get his jersey retired . Does that mean . What do you guys think. I mean, i cant imagine anyone else wearing that number. No one has worn it since he retired back in 2007. This is precedent setting because he is not in the hall of fame. At least not yet. Not yet. Fan fest saturday. Yeah. I think it would be a nice tip of the cap of the organization to retire the jersey. It would be number ten. Pitchers and catchers on monday. Pitchers and catchers for Little League was yesterday. How is your team doing. The Phillies Team is looking solid. Looking forward to the season. People looking at the market. Is it going to be up or down . It is actually in the positive. Up 14 points. A lot different from what we saw yesterday, which was negative 1300 points, at least on the dow. The nasdaq right now really not that Much Movement there. Just down five points. And the s p 500 down 9. Alex savidge is live in San Francisco. This has been a wild morning just in the past two and a half hours or so, alex. Reporter it really has. The market has been up and down since the opening bell this morning. It would appear as though stocks have sort of stabilized. You can imagine there is a lot of anxiety on wall street. On Market Street in San Francisco, people were talking to say theyre not ready to panic. No. Not worried at all. You only lose money if you sell when it is low. If you ride it out, it is a good teem to put money in because it can go farther again. Reporter yesterday there was that massive selloff on wall street. The dow by the closing bell had plunged nearly 1200 points. That was a 4. 6 drop. And it wiped out the market gains that have been made so far this year. Health care, energy and tech stocks all brought down the market yesterday, as well as the worries about Rising Interest Rates in the near future. While some investors are certainly feeling anxious, Financial Experts say now is the time that all of us need to focus on the sound fundamentals of our economy. If you panic and sell when the market drops and then sit on the side lines until there is a big recovery, and many people did this, not huge numbers but a lot of people did this back in 2008, 2009. They waited a couple years to get back in and theyre worse off for having done so. Reporter now, the dow down about 8 and a half percent from its previous highs earlier in the year. But percentagewise it is nothing compared to 1987, when the dow dropped 22 in just one day. So important to put things in perspective. The u. S. Has seen 88 straight months of job growth. Low inflation. Aalthough there continues to be concerns on wall street that the fed will raise Interest Rates soon. We saw the free fall with stocks part of a market correction, a dialing back after the market sored to record highs within the past month or so. Send it back to you guys. Thank you, alex. James mcbride of the Mcbride Group handles investments from private individuals. He joins us live this morning. They say when this is happening, let the professionals do it. Dont do anything. If anything youre going to lock in losses. Is that correct . That exactly correct. People have tendencies to do something even if it is wrong. It usually is wrong if you do something. The most important thing is to stay the scores course. It is time in the market not market timing. Thats why young people like you will do great because you invested in your 401 k last month, you invest in your 401 k this month and aggressively. Young people. Thank you. Trust me, sal, it is all relative. When you joined us on friday at noon, you talked about forces that were in play. What is happening today that will affect the market . I think today people are coming to their senses. Okay. The market was clearly getting ahead of itself. We had returns lasta they are were pretty much off the chart. Unsustainable. That is exactly the right word. You had the s p 500 up 20 . The dow up 20 . Those are threeyear numbers on average. The market was ahead of itself. It has come back. I was looking before we went on air and the market is pretty much where it was before thanksgiving. Its not like we lost that much. What i try to remind people is look back a little bit to see how far the market has gone. The market does go up over time. If you want to see how strong the market s get on the internet and find out what the Dow Jones Industrial average was the day that you were born. It was a lot lower. It was a lot lower. Let me ask you about computer trading. Okay. A lot of people place these orders to buy or sell at a certain price. And then you hear the analysts saying the computers are taking over and that may have driven the sharp drop. That is correct. The problem is it is not people making decisions, it is a computer alga rate. What was driving the market really since thanksgiving, when we had like a 3,000point upswing it is called a momentum alga rate. They were feeding on themselves coming up. When they smell something going south, theyre out of there. Volatility index. Exactly. Yesterday there was a thousand point drop in about one minute. Thats not human being. Its the computer. Theyre the bad guys. Market correction. Do we need one . Explain it for arrivers. Do we need one . We never hit it. We werent there yet. It has been such a long time since we have had one. The consensus, in my opinion, yes, we need it. Why . We need to take our foot off of the accelerator so the value of stock is more in line with the true value of the company. Make no mistake about it. Companies are doing well. Thats why this thing is nothing to worry about. The underlying fundment l as, the economy is terrific. Earnings are up. Wages are going up. If i own a company, isnt that a little concerning . It sure is. Think about this, the consumer represents twothirds, Consumer Spending represents twothirds of the do he mess tick product. Those consumers have more money now. They will be spending more money now. That is a good thing. Retail investors, a small investor that buys individual stocks, is there buying opportunity. You betcha. Im a bargain hunter. I lock a sale. I always tell my wife im in the only business that people hate a sale. Okay. Some opportunities out there. I think so. Im not opening the envelopes that come to the house for the next few weeks or so. You dont need to. Keep investing and add to your 401 k each month. Slow and steady wins the race. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up we will talk about the question of the day which is on this topic. We ask you, are you making any changes to your investments following the stock market sell off . 10 say yes. 58 say no. 32 are not invested in the market. Eileen tweets, im not agreedy. Very happy with my return during the bubble over the past year. Too close to retirement to take chances. I will look into added stock purchase buy low when you can. Rain or shine, stick to your strategy. Have cash on hand to take advantage of pull backs. I like it. And i thank you for sending in your responses. We will share them with you at 9 30. 9 hashtag is ktvuthe9. We like getting your comments on facebook and twitter. A Human Rights Group says nursing home patients are being overmedicated as a control mechanism. Up next, 2 investigates looks into what researchers found happening right here in california. Reporter when her daughter was forced to find her 93year old mother a nursing facility in the bay area that was the hardest thing. Reporter right after her mother settled in, she got a call. Her mother was being aggressive. She says the caretaker made a recommendation. She said, but we have this medication that has worked for other patients. Reporter thats when they are mother started a regimen of a cocktail of drugs, antipsychotics, muscle relaxers and the personality went away. I cant describe it. She would explain to me that she was seeing bugs. I knew this was a side effect of the drug. She was seeing the kaleidoscope. It sounded like somebody was on a. Drug trip. An lsd trip is what it sounded like. It was terrible. Did you feel pressure to get those medications for your mother . Yes. Because that was the going thing. Thats how they dealt with this kind of thing. Reporter and she isnt alone. According to a new report, more than 179,000 de men apatients nationwide are given antipsychotic drugs without a proper medical reason. It is unacceptable. Using antipsychotic drugs inappropriately and as restraints and prohibited by federal law but it persists because of an enforcement problem. Reporter hannah is a lead researcher on the report and visited more than a hundred facilities across the u. S. , including in california. I interviewed one woman who said that every time her mother cried out because she had a urinary tract infection, because she had a pull pulmonary embolism, because she was sitting in her own urine, it slapped her with antipsychotic drugs. Reporter those are the three conditions where such drugs would be appropriate. Since 2012, california has improved. The personal is down but flam says it is a widespread dangerous and even deadly problem. In fact the government has issued its strongest warning against using these drugs in older people with dementia because they make it almost twice as likely that a person dies within ten weeks. Reporter 2 investigates want today find out which bay area nursing facilities showed red flags according to federal data. Although no facilities are named in the report, our team obtained a government list showing almost two dozen local facilities with a High Percentage of residents taking the medications. But some on the list say there are legitimate reasons why percentages are high. For instance, they have fewer residents and they specialize in treating patients who need those drugs for approved diseases. Human rights watch say that many facilities are giving the drugs for appropriate reasons but the state isnt investigating to make sure. The problem is that the government is failing to enforce the law and the industry is getting away with it. Do you remember the things that you saw on the ceiling and the walls . She doesnt. I dont want to remember them. Yeah. Okay. Reporter for celia christian, life is better now off of the drugs and at a different nursing home. Her humor is back. What is she saying . She has so much personality. Reporter and hopefully not going anywhere soon. She thinks you have a great personality. Somewhere. She looks very aggressive. My goodness. Come on. 93. She was quick with the come backs. The enforcement part of this story, we just heard the woman claim they are failing to enforce it. What needs to be done to fix that . The researcher we spoke with say regulations in california are stronger than other states. Actually our numbers are better than other states. It is not that the laws arent there. It is that enforcement investigators are not going to these places with red flags and seeing if people are following them or not. They dont have the money or the resources. Sadly enough with this story or stories that i have been on when it comes down to staffing and state people going, it goes back to that. Thats what theyre saying. At the end of the day we want more specific questions. Maybe that is the answer. Really you cant organize in the same way. We asked the department of Public Health for an interview to answer the questions. They declined an on camera interview saying their numbers are better but we didnt get any specifics on it. Lets talk about the family aspect. Lets say we have a mom getting on in the years, 80 plus and we make the decision to put her in a care facility. How do we do that . We want to be advocates. But how do we do that. Pay attention. My family had a grandmother that went to a nursing facility there. Is so much stress. Even though the loved one is in the nursing facility, this daughter went every day and talked to mom. If you notice a drastic change, ask why. Get the list of medications she is on. Bring it to a doctor and a second doctor. Some people are asking me isnt it the doctors that prescribe the medications not the nursing facilities. What is sad about that, candice, we have family members in nursing facilities from time to time. Were there on top of the nurses. But some people dont have that. Uhhuh. What is sad the people that dont have that end up dying quicker. Uhhuh. I guess if you can, if you know someone who is older, see if you can take care of them by asking questions. Asking questions, being there. Talking to the caretaker, talking to the loved ones and friends. Talking to everyone. But it is a difficult process of course. The fact is that if someone is doping an individual up and sticking them in a corner, you know, that is against the law. It is against the law. That is criminal. It is hard to catch. And that was this is why the researcher was saying that is the problem, enforcement. They started saying their mom was sleeping all the time. They brought her home for thanksgiving and she was falling asleep during every bite. When she got off the drugs her mom was back again. Youre thinking maybe it is depression, she is sleeping too much. When she was off the drugs, she is better. In this specific case we looked and it appeared to be the medications. A powerful report. Thank you, candice. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, a hate Crime Investigation at cupertinos Deanza College. The attack on a transgender student that is leading to meetings between the student leaders and the president. Up next, President Trump will decide whether to release another classified memo, this time by democrats. We have a followup to the story we first reported on the 9 yesterday about a 10vehicle crash in santa rosa. Six people were injured including two with major injuries. Authorities is a i a truck hauling tons of fire debris crashed into cars sparking a fire. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles. It took firefighters half an hour to bring the fires under control. Crews had to act fast and prevent the fuel burning from getting into the sewer system nearby and the creeks. Mayor schaaf will join dreamers to call on legalizing their status. They want federal lawmakers to stop using young people as bargaining chips in the debate over immigration. Theyre holding a news connerrence today at june at the Childrens Hospital of oakland. They need to resolve the issue of dreamers separate from other immigration laws, including the demand for a wall along the mexican border. President trump will decide whether to authorize the release of a classified memo, this time by the democrats. Yet the House Intelligence Committee voted to release the memo drafted in response to last weeks republican memo that accused the fbi and the department of justice of abusing their power to get a warrant to monitor a former Trump Campaign associate. Democrats on the House Intel Committee say the first memo is inaccurate and misleading. We think this will help inform the public of the many distortions and inaccuracies in the majority memo. President trump has five days now to decide whether or not he will authorize the release of that memo. President trump is speaking about the drunk driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker edwin jackson. Jackson was killed sunday night by a suspected drunk driver in the country illegally. Police say the driver is an undocumented immigrant and had been deported twice. Jackson and his uber driver were struck as they stood outside of the car on interstate 70 in indianapolis. Both men were killed. In the tweet the president said the following. Quite a scare this morning for some people along the east coast who have the weather app called accuweather on their phone. Accuweather mistakenly sent a text alert to people about a tsunami warning along the eastern sea board, including charleston, South Carolina and port lane, maine. However it was actually a test. Officials sent the second alert a short time later but it is like unringing a bell. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, do you feel like youre kind of wasting hours of your day stuck in traffic . If you say yes, up next, the new report that proves youre right. An East Bay High School school paralyzed during a wrestling match last month. The outpouring of support by the community to help his family. U. S. Stocks went on another bumpy ride on wall street. Dropping very sharply, about 500 points in early trading. As you can see here as we take a live look at the dow jones, the board, it is up 112 points right now. Our question of the day has been are you making any changes to your investments following that recent stock market sell off we saw on friday as well as monday . 10 say yes. 58 are doing the right thing, sitting on your hands and saying no. 32 ever you say you are not invested in the market. And really sitting on your hands, not checking the envelope or checking online is the thing to do. I have a feeling that a lot of the people who watch us are not retail investors. Theyre the kind of people who allow the professionals like all of us really to have they do it and we kind of watch. Youre not going to open the envelope. Dont want to know. As james said, if youre in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, sit back. Right. And probably relax, take a breath. And then if youre closer to retirement, then you start opening the envelope. Mike, i like your attitude. I like your attitude too, steve. A day trader. Busy, busy. Yeah. If youre young enough, keep buying. We do have if youre buying in High Pressure, boy, ill tell you, were pay off big time with dividends of record highs. These were the records yesterday. San francisco, gilroy, Half Moon Bay and mountain view. Almost all of the records went back to 2011. The same can be said for today. I think San F
