The controversy in this case centers around an unsung verse of the National Anthem widely considered raises and offensive. That is why the associated student body here at cal high in san ramon has decided the anthem should no longer be played at school pep rallies. We have learned that the star spangled banner was not performed during the recent winter rally here at campus. School leadership officials have deep concerns about the unsung first of the anthem which makes reference to killing slaves. They feel that the song is offensive and problematic and that is why they have decided to skip it altogether at School Events. We have been asking people in this area to wait again. It is good to see kids standing up for something they believe in. They need to have that platform to speak. It gives them a chance to express themselves. It takes out one group to take a stand for something they believe in and have the ability to educate others and allow people to also stand up and come together as a whole. I think this might be the start of something. We need different conversations. To put this in perspective, two years ago there was racist graffiti found inside one of the bathrooms here on campus at cal high. That prompted a lot of debate and a lot of discussion amongst the student body. You can imagine the associated student body may in fact get pushback from some students. One student reached out to ktvu to say he was upset that the starspangled banner will no longer be played at school pep rallies. I am in the process of reaching out to School Officials to try to get their perspective on whats been going on. Back in 2016 students them the character called rebel guy. He stands on the original mascot colonel reb. They removed the rebel nickname. The School District was going to replace the name with a mythical bird phoenix but they scrapped that idea when administrators learn that it is associated with the white supremacist group. The School District will take up the issue of the mascot next tuesday. The city of berkeley could become the first city for Recreational Marijuana. This comes after recent actions by the federal government. Thats right. This particular resolution is supported by the mayor and two city council members. It is modeled after sanctuary city laws. If pass this resolution with direct City Employees and police not to cooperate with federal agents for federal marijuana laws. Berkeley was the first city to declare itself as a sanctuary for medical marijuana use in 2008. Council members say its only fitting they do the same for recreational use. It is believed this resolution would be the first of its kind. The federal government considers marijuana a schedule one drug like heroin. The resolution was motivated after Jeff Sessions rescinded obama era guidelines that limited execution of cannabis businesses and individual sellers and states that had legalize cannabis. Berkeley has a long history of support of cannabis use. A councilmember says that this resolution would affect all people whether they use cannabis or not it would reinforce the states rights and that vote will take place at the City Council Meeting tonight. Like sanctuary city laws on immigration, it doesnt have any teeth when it comes to the federal level. We did put intos we did put in calls to the city manager and the mayor. We talked to one man on the street who thinks it is reinforcing the state laws going down to the localized level. It creates a presence that this is what the people of california and the city of berkeley want. We have new information about the woman who was found left it dead on a remote road between livermore and tracy. Two coworkers found a 19year old woman on the side of the road and they stopped to help. I gave her my blanket because it was freezing cold and she was soaking wet. The man and woman could see that she had crawled 300 feet. They called for help and prayed with the woman until paramedics and Sheriff Deputies arrived. The victims bravery and strength impress them while they waited. She was a fighter, for real. She was fighting for her life. It will be encouraging to her family to know that her daughter had that spirit to fight. She was airlifted to the hospital where she told police about the people who captured her. The information she gave deputies led to the arrest of 219yearolds from modesto. They do not know why the woman was attacked. Police in concorde are investigating a shooting that put one man in the hospital. It happened at 9 15. They found a man who had been shot in the chest. He had surgery at the hospital. They searched unsuccessfully for the shooter. Police have yet to release any details. Teachers allegedly being harassed by students. She ended up making four transfers of a couple of hundred dollars through western union. She went to the fbi when he asked her for half 1 million. The fbi says nearly 1600 victims in california alone were taken for more than 30 million. Suspects typically operate where its difficult to catch them. There is good news. They claim male students have harassed them for years. We are at the high school mlb mill valley where one teacher went public with this. Reporter she was a second teacher from the district to speak out about this experience. She has been a math teacher here and mill valley for the last 15 years. She says during the course of her career shes been subjected to Sexual Harassment from her male students at least a dozen time times. Her statements were recorded and published on youtube. She says the harassment she experience included unwanted touching, and emails made from students while they were on campus as well as derogatory comments. Ive been slandered by students and i have been touched more than once by a student. The reader told the school board they need to do more to protect teachers from this type of behavior. She says she did go to but it did not lead to any permanent changes. She was afraid to come forward until another teacher. The principal told the independent journal that the district takes complaints of harassment very seriously and will respond by investigating and taking any necessary corrective action. The district will study some of the work conditions to get a better understanding of the problem. They have hired an attorney that specializes in those types of investigations. Theyve also hired an extra officer and they are in charge of receiving and responding to Sexual Harassment complaints. Later today, a counselor at the California School for the deaf will be in court facing charges of child molestation. Ricardo rose was arrested last friday. He has been placed on administrative leave after a complaint was filed against him. The school serves students from kindergarten through high school. Rose is facing several charges including lewd act with the child and making threats to kill someone. They identified one victim and they are asking other possible victims to come forward.
