KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am February 23, 2018

It is new and different, this year we are celebrating the year of the dog. If you cant come say hello be sure to join us at 6 00 tomorrow evening. We all go every year and one of my favorite parts is that i get to see your families. I am going to give you a tip to save you time and money. We take heart and i thought i could run in and get some clipper cards, the discount for children it is half off and they are charging for paper tickets so i thought i would run over and get two but no. You have to bring their birth certificates. You are kidding me . Birth certificate or school id. You can to show them a the phone. So you need legitimate documentation. That is too much work to go through all of that. So i will walk over to the bart station today to get my discount cards for my children and we will use them tomorrow. Maybe take the ferry. We get home so late i am reluctant to do that with the little ones. I am driving my hummer over there. Just kidding i dont have a hummer. If you rely on bart just remember that. We will talk about the new years parade in a moment but first President Trump is once again targeting sanctuary cities. This is one day after he threatened to pull Immigration Enforcement out of the golden state. Christien kafton is in san jose with more on the comments and how local lawmakers are responding. Reporter the president making headlines on the issue of immigration. Just yesterday he made the statements of pulling ice out of california over the issue of sanctuary cities this morning though he started off with a twitter rant that says at one point in time ms13 gang members are being removed by the great Border Patrol agents by the thousands, but these killers come back in from el salvador and through mexico like water. El salvador takes our money and mexico needs to help more. We need the wall and then today the president heeding the message again speaking at cpac in maryland saying that he would put sanctuary cities on notice one more time. We are cracking down on sanctuary cities. Can you believe this . That is another one. We want cities to be sanctuaries for lawabiding americans. Not for criminals. Reporter so far i. C. E. Has not commented but the proposal of pulling agents out of california seems unlikely. The state has seen an increase in immigration sweeps and employment audits. Meanwhile the interim mayor of San Francisco has released a statement that reads if President Trump leaves threatening sanctuary cities with federal action will coerce us into betraying the trust and cooperation of immigrants he is sorely mistaken. The declaration to abdicate is more of the same from this administration. Once again choosing politics over Public Safety and californias senior senator weighing in on this, Diane Feinstein says she believes the statements were meanspirited. Back to you guys. To the question of the day, do you think pulling ice agents out of california is a good idea . 58 , 59 say yes, 41 say no. Tweets and Facebook Comments including this one from a viewer who says i think the problem is how they are operating. You dont take people who have built lives and families and get rid of them. Immigration has led to great advancements in many fields. John says good riddance to bad rubbish. We have more sophisticated ways to deal with the issue. Jenna baker says i dont agree with sanctuary status let him do his job. We will take your responses through the day and share them with you. A few moments ago Florida Governor rick scott announced the minimum wage age to purchase firearms in his state will be 21. Remember the 19yearold accused High School Shooter last week purchased the gun that he used in the attack legally and we are learning during the shooting an armed deputy who was on campus stayed outside of the building and did not enter to stop the gunman. This comes as teachers return to campus for the first time. Lets go to parkland, florida for more. Reporter s teachers and chaff staff are returning to Stoneman Douglas high school. Today they will be providing support services. Eventually we will have to move on and i have mixed emotions going back. We go from angry to sad. This comes one day after the Broward County sheriff announced the armed officer on duty at the school never went inside to engage the shooter. He has been placed under investigation. The sheriff says it is not the only disciplinary action being taken. I restricted two of our deputies while we delve further into this and make a decision if they could have done more or should have done more. The shooting and the inaction has rekindled the debate of arming Staff Members with many students and teachers rejecting the idea of guns in the classroom. You shouldnt be responsible for protecting the entire school. The idea is absolutely ridiculous. Others in Law Enforcement say that it is worth exploring. One florida county is making plans for a new Pilot Program overseen by the local sheriff. My primary responsibility in polk county is to protect life. As for the high school students, they will return for classes next wednesday, for the First Time Since fleeing this property in absolute panic and terror on valentines day. From parkland, florida phil keating ktvu fox 2 news. President trump spoke at the cpac in maryland. We brought you part of the address live at 7 00. Among other topics the president talked about the suggestion that some teachers be armed with guns to protect students. Welltrained gun adept teachers, coaches and people that work in the buildings. People that were in the marines, people in the army and navy and air force and coast guard. People that are adept with weaponry and with guns, they teach. The president says declaring schools gun free zones only puts students in more danger. The president is facing backlash from educators about his suggestion to arm teachers. Cristina rendon on has more from bay area representatives. The idea of arming educators does not sit well with the president of the oakland education association. We are not putting a gun in the hands of teachers who are there to teach and to protect. We cant expect them to fire at potentially a student. The Oakland Unified School District Police chief wants to talk about a real solution. I get pushback from the public they dont even want police in school with handguns. To arm a teacher is insane. That is a statement made by a man with no experience in this field. It is not going to happen. They believe people who advocate for Arming Teachers are doing it to sell more guns. Teachers should be armed with counselors, nurses, support personnel and they should have pencils and paper. Our job is not to solve the problem in society it is to teach. The California Teachers Association referred us to a statement by the National Education association and it says bringing more guns into schools does nothing to protect students and educators. Cristina rendon ktvu fox 2 news. During a meeting yesterday President Trump outlined several changes to current law that he would support to help prevent mass shootings. He suggested raising the age to purchasing a rifle to 21 years old and he back the ban on bump stocks the device that essentially turns a semi automatic rifle into a fully automatic weapon. The president has said he would support comprehensive background checks with an emphasis on Mental Health and he echoed this to cpac. The president says he has spoken to the nra about gun safety and as we reported yesterday the head of the nra spoke at the cpac conference and he criticized the fbi for failing to act on tips that the shooting suspect may have been planning the shooting and he lashed out against nra opponents who he says are using the tragedy to strip away the constitutional right to bear arms. They hate the nra and the second amendment. They hate individual freedom. A political Watchdog Group says the nra spent more than 30 million supporting the Trump Campaign in 2016. Professor Eric Sheckler chair of the Uc Berkeley Political Science Department says in the 70s and 80s the nra transformed from a hunting Enthusiast Club to a powerful lobbying group and he says funding comes from 40 fees for members and gun manufacturers. There is an argument that the reason the nra is so uncompromising is because of the constituency. If you look at survey data there are issues where nra members themselves would be willing to compromise or support modest gun control measures at least. During his speech the head of the nra criticized Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren and pamela harris. There has been speculation that though senators could be considering a run for president in 2020.
