The statistics show 57 people died from fentanyl in San Francisco last year. That is one death a week and up from six depth not even a decade ago. Live coverage tonight from amber. She is at San Francisco general after speaking with the drug uses about the reasons and an er doctor about the danger. Reporter i spoke with a doctor who heads up the Er Department at the hospital. He tells me he is alarmed by the number of encinal overdoses he sees and wants to warn the public about how dangerous the drug is. Johnny lopez tells me he is homeless and uses heroin. He said his supplier turned him on some encinal two months ago. A lot of people are turning to fentanyl because of the strength. This is the fentanyl we get in the emergency department. Reporter it is a synthetic painkiller used by doctors to treat patients recovering from surgery or for cancer. Some say it is up to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is very dangerous. And really should be avoided outside of medical hands. Reporter doctor Chris Caldwell heads up the Er Department. He said he sees fentanyl overdoses daily. Sometimes up to 12 in a day. He said users are either ingesting or smoking the drug. It has taken over for hair one is the number one choice for opioids. Reporter initially it was used to lace drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Now experts say people are using the drug because of its easy access and they can get high with a small dose. That is how fentanyl came to us. Showed up in counterfeit peels a few years ago. At this point it is its own drug supply. Both these Homeless People see folks overdosing on the streets often. I can call them friends. Reporter he uses crack. And is concerned about getting cocaine that is laced with fentanyl. We dont know what is good and what is not. You dont know until its too late. Reporter in 2010 there were six depth from fentanyl overdoses San Francisco. In the first two weeks of this month 10 people died from a fentanyl overdose. Experts say making narcan readily available to counteract of drugs is helping to save lives. For lopez he said fentanyl is helping him cope with an illness while living on the streets. It gives me release relief. Better relief as a matter of fact. Reporter experts are advising people who use the drug not to do so alone. If someone loses consciousness or stops breathing use narcan if available and call for help. Experts say education is prevention. To san jose where police say it was a domestic dispute that led a man to shoot and killed four people before turning his gun on himself. The crime is one of the deadliest in the citys history. The five people all died at a home on habits court in South Central san jose after 8 30 pm last night. Several of the victims are the gunmans own family members. We are at the quiet culdesac where the crime happened. Reporter police say there was no documented history of Domestic Violence between the suspect and family members. It triggered the killings is unclear. Neighbors i spoke to tonight save the family has lived here a long time. They kept to themselves and they suspected nothing out of the ordinary. Crime scene cleanup crews arrived monday night after please wrapped up their day long investigation of a quadruple murder and suicide. That has rattled the South Central san jose neighborhood. Here any turmoil or problems at the home . Reporter like many neighbors she knew the people who lived at the home on habits court in passing. The heard they appear to be an ordinary vietnamese family. Im shaken learning what happened today. Reporter a clear picture as to what transpired just after 8 30 pm sunday night. Reports of gunfire came from the home. I heard gunshots and i took my kid and my wife into the master bedroom to hide. Reporter a neighbor who asked me not show his face said he heard an argument and 5 to 6 shots fired. He then saw his neighbor jump a fence into his yard. She claims her husband was chasing her. The wife jumped the fence and ran into my house. And then she locked the door. In my kids room while we were in the master bedroom. And then i ran outside and i closed all the doors. And i saw him asking or looking for his wife. Reporter police is because of the gunmans wife daughter and niece who all escaped. They say he had a handgun and shot several people inside. Using a bearcat they were able to rescue a man and woman shut at least once from the home. They died at the hospital. After four hours police entered the home. Officers found two more women dead. The gunmans family members. The gunman was found dead in the side yard. Ive been here for 27 years. I dont remember an incident like this where four people were murdered. It is just sad. Reporter we so people visibly distraught. Entering and leaving a neighbors home. They did not speak to reporters. Two people at the gunmans home today ask for privacy. The Coroners Office has yet to officially release the identities of the victims. And the suspect. A 45yearold homeless man in santa rosa was arrested today and is facing arson prowling burglary and drug charges. Police say they received calls about a man running around an apartment complex on mcbride lane trying to open doors. They say miguel allegedly set fire to an empty Cardboard Box on the porch of one of the units. A second case of arson is also being investigated and an apartment complex on west lane. On the Peninsula Police say they seized illegal weapons from a home in foster city including a machine gun. With a grenade launcher. 41yearold Joseph Holmes was arrested last week at the Contra Costa County anti violent support effort task force. Agents say they received a tip he had obtained lot conversion switches which allow guns the fire in full automatic mode. He is facing multiple gun charges. The suspected gunman in the shooting death of Sacramento Police officer Tara Osullivan appeared in court today. 45yearold adel sambranos ramos walked to the court with a large bandage on his head. Authorities say just hours before he intentionally hit his head on a bedpost in his jail cell. He is facing a lease for charges including the murder of officer osullivan and owning an illegal rifle. There is an ongoing investigation. It is going to take a long time to process the crime scene. My guess the charging document may have some additional counts as time goes on. He did not enter a plea today. He is scheduled to be back in court one month from today. Traffic heading to livermore was tied up today when a grass fire broke out along interstate 580. It started just after 3 pm. Burned alongside the westbound lanes near greenville road. The Highway Patrol closed all lanes in the westbound direction resulting in a big traffic backup. Only about five acres of hillside burned. The fire appears to start on the roadside. The cause is under investigation. A grass fire in fremont burned 12 to 15 acres today.
