Day but the people here in South San Francisco in orange park would not have it any other way. This is home to steel mills and shipbuilding and now medical advances and Million Dollar homes. We have police, we have fire and the residents of South San Francisco coming out to fair park. Its about 52 degrees. I am still cold. I had to bring out the puffy jacket. I thought surely the fog will burn off and be sunny. This is San Francisco. I wanted the fog. Growing up in the bay area, temperatures like this, i would fly out of San Francisco and in the summertime i had a couple of friends and this is what it is. You asked me why i remember this Football Game, it was the fall of 93 and i was away and we won the home but when we came to South San Francisco i had never been so beat up by life. And they hit me hard. So they have a great Football Program at South San Francisco high school. My mama send colorado right now. And she is a huge fan of sees candy. So we have been trying to pick up a box for mom later on. Thats great candy here in the bay area. There is so much to ask lord in South San Francisco. We have a reporter at the brewing company. Hes going be talking about all the good food as well. And i mentioned police, firefighters and residents, lots of fun and orange park. I should say the city came out in a big way. Will get to them in a but first lets talk a little bit about the history of South San Francisco, decades ago all the way up to today. South San Francisco originated in the late 1970s and the establishment of stockyards and marketplace for cattle. The city located on the Western Shores of San Francisco bay and northern san mateo can county. Peter e hiller was the wealthy man from the midwest. Incorporated in 1908, it had other industry that included shipbuilding industry to support the world were. In the next few years a considerable portion of the real estate was devoted to industry which was manufacturing, wholesaling, transportation facilities and utilities. One of the most Recognizable Companies is sees candies, it continues to make its fabulous chocolates inside at South San Francisco factory. In 1928, a group ordered the property taxes increase so they could build these on side of the mountain. The industrial city. Today the population of more than 63,000 people, a thriving community. It is home to the Largest Biotech Companies including industry giants genentech and amgen. I mentioned genentech, on the way in, to South San Francisco, going down 19th avenue, there are four or five genentech buses that i passed. More than 4000 employees. The city is changing four decades. One thing is not changing is the people that make it what it is. She did this in a big way in orange park. What do you have . What a great turnout, it has been amazing to watch. We have firefighters as you mentioned, and one that was actually right there on the top of that latter. And the American Flag is hanging above us really incredible. Taking a look around, i want you to see the incredible turnout that has come out today. We have everyone here from the community from the First Responders to other members that celebrate how great south city is and it all has to see. And we are all over this park, i mean all over. Its a really big park. Let me show you and decide as weve got our set up but on the other side, let me show you this picture because so many groups of people and Community Groups have come out to say hey, let me tell you what we are about as well. This is incredible. The area over here, throughout the part of the park, if you come back alive, we see all the boots. What do you have . We have a game . You have this other job, tell me what else you do . Im a Parking Enforcement officer. I love it. Your wife . She came out here. You do this on the side and we were talking earlier, whered you get more love . Here at this booth . I get love everywhere. [ laughter ] we appreciate you being out here. Certainly a great day out here in south city. Back to you guys. Claudia, thank you. Great times outside of orange garden. We have Sal Castaneda at armstrong brewing company. Reporter you know, im standing out here on grand avenue, a lot of businesses here and we will talk about that in a second. My town, this is something i know about. I will talk about this in a moment but when i went out to south city, the first thing i wanted was a sandwich. Lets see what i found. If you want a nononsense italian sub in South San Francisco, look no further than little lucas and met shop on el camino real. It looks small but it cranks up between 3500 sandwiches a day on the inside. They are fresh. Diana and her husband mike took over this from the original owners nearly 20 years ago but they kept most things the same. What is special about this place is the long history, generous portions and oh yes, the sausage. A special sauce or jalapeno hot sauce is the secret ingredient that adds a special taste. The sauces are what we are known for, thats original. However, there are some few specials that my husband who loves to cook and is good at it, has added to the menu for as so we have 22 specials. Cut and half and are as much as a whole sandwich and some places. What also makes a good is the fresh bread. I got a traditional salami sandwich with swiss cheese on this dutch bread. Across town we visited a morah, another longtime Family Business serving up mediterranean and middle eastern food complete with house made bread made in the oven every day. We visited at lunch and the elegant dining room was busy which meant the. Kitchen was turning out the food. We have kebab, one of the most popular dishes as you can see the kitchen from almost every spot cassette. The ships are tending to the up and. We do the traditional with a california twist. We use fresh local ingredients to put out the dishes. The owner recommends the massive platter which is an appetizer platter. It has a little bit of everything including bubba canouse, tabulate and tahini sauce. Falafel and warm fresh pizza. After watching the kitchen detail the preparation, it was finally my turn. And for dessert i had this beautiful pastry of the lodo filled with semolina custard with orange topped by housemaid rosewater ice cream. I come back just for this. To top all of this Delicious Food i thought a strong cup of coffee would hit the spot and boy did i find a good spot. It is called deadeye coffee bar across the street from city hall. This small barn serve traditional coffee drinks and some not so traditional once. This is drip coffee with one shot of espresso. Three shots of espresso for the deadeye. You can have it hot or cold. This is already more caffeinated than the regular. Are you kidding me . I decided on the cobra red eye with one shot of this also because i was afraid. Although it is small it has a great layout for people to be friendly and the barista is our real artist. In the south city you need a pick me up so here you go. I will let you know if im up all night after this. I had one of their coffees this morning and i had the strongest one. No big deal, no big deal. I want to mention that South San Francisco has a great mexican food sing. Look at the burrito i got. If you want a serious reader or go to la moreno around the corner, there are a lot of good spots for mexican food. Come to South San Francisco, you will not go away hungry. Coming up later, we will talk about some of the craft brewing going on here at a place called armstrong brewing. Sal, you had me at hello but you also had me with that salami and cheese. The sandwiches look fantastic. Great job. I cant help but think about how people here in south city really have come out. We have hundreds of people here in orangeburg. Theres also a responsibility the people in south city have been responding to and are acting on. Coming up later, we will take you to the surf program. This is Community Emergency response team. Its about being prepared and taking care of yourself and others. Fire safety search and rescue, team organizations, medical operations, and members of the fire department. Thats why it is so important for residents to get involved. Not just to take care of themselves but others in the city. We look forward to that. Good start. We are just getting warmed up, much more to come. We will check in with Frank Mallicoat and his entertaining stories. And we will learn more about the city. Youre watching the nine, live from South San Francisco. Sco. [ singing ] i could listen all day, my goodness. This is the st. Augustine chancel choir, founded ages ago. 30 members strong. I asked them why they do it and he said they do it for the service of the lord. And they are all volunteers. It is the sound of voices only. It is magical. Admittedly chili at orange park and south city. Lets check in with Frank Mallicoat. I know youve got people around you. I have a ton of people around me, good morning one and all. We are talking trivia on this beautiful friday. Believe it it or not, this was known as the city. It was known for its spa, we are here and loving it. That the city has a rich tradition of a lot of history. We took to the streets to find out what south san franciscans really know about their town. Have you looked on the hill over there . Industrial city. Industrial city. You needed a little help didnt you . They spell out South San Francisco, the industrial city. The letters are some meant to say the least and 25 feet. Multiply that by three. 60 feet . True or false, South San Francisco got its name from a very big meatpacker out of chicago . I never heard that. I dont know. The meatpacking industry had a big influence on the town. True. Are you sure . No. I dont know. I could not make that up. We are in front of city hall. It is modeled after a very important building in our nations history in philadelphia. Can you name the building . U. S. History. Oh my gosh. The declaration of . The name of the hall would be . I dont know that. Was the name of the hall . Constitutional . Independence hall. Thats what im feeling. You are correct. It is also the center of biotech. Name the biggest biotech company. Genentech. You can go up to the letters and check them out, they are 60 feet long as you just found out. Some of the best views of the bay you casee from there, you can see the airport and san bruno. All right, joining us live in orange park, shes the leader of the city, mayor carol matsumoto. Thank you for joining us. We were just talking about this. Do you get up there and you love it . I spent more time picking up acorns. We use to plant up there and then let me tell you a story about some of the seniors. They use to slide down the letters on cardboard. You were mayor according to my notes in 2004 and 2009 and 2014, and now, it is safe to say you like being mayor of South San Francisco. What do you love about the city . I think first of all, this is the fourth time. I love the city because of the diversity. I love who we are, i love the fact that the city goes way back in a so resilient. We moved from cattle ranches to sunflowers, to industrial and now the largest Biotech Center in the world. It is all of it. And change is difficult and. Light and despite this, we have a great community. Lets talk about going forward. I did somehow shopping and the average price of a home is over 1 million. You have people who need housing and you have Public Housing on public property . Back in the day, we produced the largest low Income Housing and affordable but then the state got mad at the city and they took away our redevelopment funding. So as a result we were very choosy. We have to support the workforce. We accumulated properties that could be the solution for redevelopment. We are back with the mayor. Sorry about that technical glitch. What is your favorite about this . I love the fact that we are resilient. I always say welcome to southside . Is go San Francisco family. We make a community, we are all about community. I have the Council Members here in the vice mayor. We are all 18. A pleasure and thanks for having us. One of the things that i love about southcentral to sell severances go is the place that makes chocolate. And now we can have a little taste of what its like to be inside sees candy. Is there anything else today . Is someone who grove here, this is your backyard. How well did you know sees . I live just five minutes away from the candy factory. My aunt work in the Factory Store so it has been in our family forever. And we got the first store in 1936. And then the factory in 1940. And then later we moved here just to i mean, we use some of the same recipes that they use back in the day. The victoria coffee and then the bonbons or hand dipped just like she used to do back in the day. It is like a walk in the factory, it is great. Thats what factories love about sees candies, lots of things have changed in south city but this is still the same. You walk in and is still the same, its just like when you were a kid. Its a memory and a tradition. I hope it will be here for a long time. Its a big part of the community. They donate and do fundraising with local schools and programs. Its always fun when they have local events. You can bring things to their events. Thank you for showing us the story. I cant imagine going to high school and getting to work for sees candies. And theres a little bit of peanut brittle. I like the thing with the almonds. And you like the peanut brittle . If i have a favorite, dark chocolate and milk chocolate. Every time we go, we get a little sample, it entices you in. Speaking of lollipops, july 20 is a lollipop day at sees candies. You can go into any store and claim your lollipop. How about that . My mom said my dental issues is because of sees candies. But she says that with a smile. Very good. Its more than candy. Sal castaneda is going to give us an idea of whats happening at armstrong brewery. Stay with us. The nature of a virus is to change. Move. Mutate. Today, lifechanging technology from abbott is helping hunt them down at their source. Because the faster we can identify new viruses, the faster we can get to stopping them. The most personal technology, is technology with the power to change your life. Life. To the fullest. [ singing ] the choir was starting years ago. They are all volunteers. Think of the time in the rehearsals. And they all have smiles on their faces with a beautiful sound. And here and far beyond. The mayor talked about the future and one thing i like is learning about the history. I think about South San Francisco and right down the street is oyster point marina. And we think about what was going on there in the 40s. They were Building Navy ships. They built 48 ships in about 48 months. Right here in our backyard. A lot happening here. We have a lot of fun. And we have a lot of people gathering. All right, thank you very much. If youre coming to South San Francisco and decide to go a couple of miles over the speed limit, ive got news for you. Follow me. Excuse me. Sparky, how are you buddy . Cutting through. They have really fast police cars. We will ruin the picture. Weve got the chief. Weve got these sergeant, tell us about the corvette. This is a 1981 chevy corvette that we obtained back in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was put together through donations from the local businesses and fundraising events. When the city really adopted the concept of Community Policing and outreach to children in the schools. This was gang resistance education. This was a tool to go out and educate the children. To create a more friendly environment so they dont see the Standard Police car. Its great for them. We use it mainly to get photo ops. We bring it to community events. It really draws the attention to the friendlier side of the police industry. Have you told anyone about this or have you pulled anyone over . It is a real police car. So if you are motoring through town, beware right . You can get pulled over. 1981 corvette. Thank you very much and we appreciate it. Word to the wise if yo
