KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 430am July 13, 2024

Thank you for joining us. What can you tell us about the weather conditions. We do know that fire pretty much doubled in size over night. Good morning. Yes. As of 355 this morning it grew to 10,000 acres. It still pretty windy. Earlier the wind speed was approximately 50 Miles Per Hour. The fire is moving in a northern direction toward cloverdale. So, they are keeping an eye on the fire and the weather conditions. Im assuming more evacuations will be needed later on this morning. How close is it to homes and schools and businesses in the area . Its out in the county. There are a lot of vineyards and ranches out there. So, north of River Rock Casino you will have Geyserville High School and then after that its a lot of vineyards and agriculture land. Sergeant, talk briefly about the evacuations. Were the easy or difficult . Are people leaving like they should . Yes. What we did with the Sheriffs Office, we send out a notice of mandatory evacuation notice. We work closely with our department of emergency services. They sent out an alert which is a wireless Emergency Alert which sounds like an amber alert you get on your phone and then they sent out a phone call and text message alert. Indicating they live in an area that needs to be evacuated. We had deputies responding and going house to house knocking and advising people that they had to evacuate. Some people did not evacuate. They state on the property and we did document that. Go ahead. But it went pretty smooth. Okay. This area. Geyserville, isnt anywhere near some of the areas that burned two years ago . Another was concern about the safari west and some of the more touristy spots up there as well like the River Rock Casino. Yes. Safari west will be south of that location. Quite a few miles away. I do recall that some of the areas did burn when we had the tubbs fire in 2017. Im not 100 sure but i think it is some of the same areas. Sergeant, what would you say to someone who is waking up right now. They hear 10,000 acres of burning. Its 0 contained. How scared or how nervous should they be . The thing is, its fire season and weve been trying to do our best to notify and educate people. I would tell them to check our twitter accounts, facebook and obviously watch the news. As we all know, weather changes. The fire to change in direction. We try to keep everybody informed but just to be ready in case they do have to evacuate. Okay. I do want to reiterate. You mentioned nick so, is such a great resource. You can sign up for these alerts. If you have family concerns and other areas you can get those alerts. Sergeant juan valencia. Thank you for joining us with an update. Lets go over to Steve Paulson and talk more about this. Icing gusts at 60 as well. Thats at mount st. Helena. There are some pretty big peaks over there. Theres a lot of easterly breeze around geyserville and cloverdale. Cobb ridge is north of 31. Ridge ranches at 1300 feet. That is a pg e site. That is 75 degrees, north east a 27 with 9 humidity. There is a geyserville ranch. That was northeast but now its west, southwest. And mount st. Helena, west with 16 humidity. 58 Miles Per Hour gust ther i think some information is probably missing for obvious reasons but still good gusts. We will continue at 2555. Everything is directed toward offshore and the temperatures are really warm and humidity is very low. Santa rosa, 11 humidity. 75 degrees with a north wind at 10. Fairfield, 13 . Windsor, 79 degrees. Healdsburg, 71. 73 in bodega bay. That is a northeaster easterly wind direction so the red flag, this is the most critical flight, this morning. Ildecrease the breeze throughout the day but not this morning. Temperatures very warm in the 80s and 90s. 95 in santa rosa. 90 an oakland. 90 in san jose. 4 36 am. Going to start and Solano County where the traffic is beginning to wake up for the morning commuton interstate 80. It is not very slow. There are people out there for sure but its not very slow on 37. And we have a good look at interstate 680 through the misha area. That looks good. If you want a Good Opportunity to drive, now is the time. Our map shows marin county which is looking good from nevada to san rafael and we are also looking at highway 4. This is a Good Opportunity to get out there ahead of the crowd coming out to the bay bridge. You can see traffic is mostly good getting onto the span. 4 36 am. More than 33,000 pg e customers in the bay area have no power right now after pg e shut off power in San Mateo County early this morning. Right now 195 customers near woodside and the honda have no power. But if the strong wind continues, that number could go up later this morning. And napa county more than 6000 homes and businesses have no power. And in Sonoma County, they have the most without power. The power has been cut to more than 27,000 customers. Pg e says it has taken action to limit the number of customers affected by the power shutoffs and one way of doing that is called segmenting parts of the service system. Pg e is using generators to keep other customers on line. We were also able to secure backup generation for a few communities, specifically anglin , plasserville, calistoga and grass valley. Altogether slightly above 5000 customers are able to be restored vibackup generation. Pg e says as soon as its meteorologist say it is safe, ground crews will be sent back out to check power lines for any signs of damage. The pg e ceo was asked if the threat of wildfires could be blamed on pg es gilyard to maintain and upgrade its equipment. The fire risk has grown exponentially, particularly in this region in the last couple of years. 2012, 15 of our service area was designated high fire threat. This year, 52 . More than a threefold increase in the geography of risk in that period of time. Pg e expects to get the all clear for the Current Power shutoffs by noontime today. After crews have inspected each powerline segment, that part of the statement segment can be reenergized. Pg e said it could take up to 48 hours for everyone to get back online. San jose is moving forward with possibly cutting ties with pg e. Mayor sam liccardo is considering a proposal to create the citys on power grid by buying assets from pg e. San joses rules committee discussed a plan to create a local customer owned utility that would ultimately go to the full city council. The city was start by building microgrids throughout san jose and eventually take control of pg e transmission lines but its a plan to utility already rejected in San Francisco. Although pg e has stated the Company Assets are not for sale, in fact, they are in bankruptcy court. They are for sale and whether they like it or not they are at the mercy of the bankruptcy judge and ultimately the cpuc. So this is the time to talk about how pg e gets reorganized in a way that will fulfill the Public Interest and hopefully do a better job in providing reliable power. The full council will discusthe pros and cons of the proposal next month. The city also plans to get feedback from customers to see where they stand on the matter. Chaos on capitol hill.
