First, the house of representatives voting to move forward with the impeachment inquiry today. What bay area lawmakers are saying as a defiant president trumps decries the whole thing is a hoax. Today House Speaker nancy pelosi presided over the congressional coat the green lights the impeachment inquiry against president trump. The resolution approved today formalizes the procedural details for how exactly the house will move forward. Republicans argue the ground rules are skewed against president trump. The House Speaker insist the procedures are more fair compared to the rules used during the impeachment proceedings of president s Richard Nixon and bill clinton. The state representative, a member of the House Oversight committee spoke about the impeachment inquiry this morning live on facebook. Its pretty clear to me based on what weve seen in the transcript and what the president submitted to and what his chief of staff has said and what weve so far found out in the process is that it certainly seems that the president violated that and should be, thats a crime. The congressman also said by trying to extort foreign powers into digging up dirt on a political rival, undermines the security of american elections and puts the nations security at rest. Our political reporter is here to talk about todays divided house vote and the tense moments leading up to it. It bears repeating. This was a historic move by the house. This is only the third time in history the house took a vote on impeachment inquiry into a sitting president. Two democrats voted against todays measure but everyone else siding with the party. On this vote the yes is 232. The no is 196. Split almost entirely along party lines, the house approved a resolution setting up the rules for the next steps of the impeachment process. In part the resolution sets of public testimony from key witnesses and allows president trumps Legal Counsel to participate. The vote highlighted the bitter divide between republicans and democrats seeking impeachment with fire debate leading to the vote. I dont know why the republicans are afraid of the truth. Reporter intelligence chairman adam schiff said republicans have been able to participate and ask questions during the investigation. After the vote the president twitter, the greatest witchhunt in American History and the white house released a statement saying in part, the democrats want to render a verdict without giving the administration a chance to mount a defense. That is unfair, unconstitutional and fundamentally unamerican. To be clear this was not a vote on impeachment but this was a vote for establishing the process of impeachment but still significant because its clear the democrats are ready to bring charges against the president. Also said it again. All these closeddoor depositions for weeks now was suddenly moving forward, this is into the public eye and thats a big game changer. I think you hurt a lot during the house session today. A lot of the speakers were saying it will be up to the American People to Pay Attention to what happens next and nancy pelosi had been against taking this vote for a long time because she was worried about the ramifications of the upcoming election but its clear they were taking this threat and they are confident they could move forward at least in the house. The senate is a different story. What is the timeline . Until this friday, friday is when the house was on a recess and during that time the House Intelligence Committee and the House Judiciary Committee will hope to finish up their private, closeddoor depositions. This has moved very quickly, this whole process has. End on november 11 is when we see then come back and start to see those publicly, nationally televised witness hearings for all of america. The two democrats also voted no on this one. One has been an outspoken person against impeachment and worth noting, we talk about the impact of the public.
