Americans evacuated onboard a cruise ship, and overnight two planes touched down in the United States with 14 people confirmed to have the virus. One of those planes landed at Travis Air Force base outside of fairfield. Good evening, everyone, im frank somerville. Yesterday, officials said 14 Cruise Ship Passengers had tested positive for the coronavirus. They were held in isolated areas for the two planes, after other passengers were then taken off at travis, and at lockland in texas, 13 of those sick passengers were flown to omaha, nebraska for treatment. The third person was taken to a hospital in san antonio, texas. This afternoon, officials in china said nearly 1800 people have now died from the virus in the chinese mainland, but the director general of the World Health Organization said today that the virus is not as deadly as other coronaviruses, such as sars. He said 80 of patients have mild cases and will recover. In 2 of reported cases, the virus is fatal. And the risk of death increases the older you are. We see relatively few cases among children. More research is needed to understand why. So far, Authorities Say about 11,000 people have recovered from the virus. Our rob roth is live now outside Travis Air Force base, with an update for us. Rob. Reporter well heather, there are two groups of evacuees about to end their 14 day quarantine, and now a new group about to just begin theirs. The flight touched down at Travis Air Force base at about 11 30 sunday night. Travis says the 171 passengers will be quarantined here for at least the next 14 days. Another flight carrying more than 100 passengers went to a military base in san antonio, texas. The evacuees are all interest the diamond princess cruise ship in japan. 14 people on the plane tested positive for covid19. A statement from travis says quote none of the passengers currently on the installation have tested positive for covid 19, or tic. One quarantined passenger described her ordeal on facebook. She says quote, its almost like living in a i can peer at neighbors through the windows, but we cant go near each other. She also wrote, quote, im so grateful for this monumental event to bring us back home. The others arrived february 5th and 7th, so their 14 day quarantines are almost up. In fairfield, most people approved of using their local base for quarantine. Everybody deserves the quality of life. I just hope that they manage it well. Reporter some people had misgivings. Theyre bringing the virus into the country. Theyve already said 14 people they brought in the last load have the virus, and that bothers me. Reporter those stationed at travis are not permitted to come in any contact with those under quarantine. Anothfeer lw days for those folks. The second plane with 151 americans onboard landed in san antonio, texas. Those evacuees will be in quarantine at Lackland Air Force base for 14 days. Today the son of the meals were selfserved in boxes in the back, the lavatories were just kind of bolted in. There was a biohazard lab. There was a divider, just a plastic sheet, really, that would separate the infected interest the noninfected. After two weeks in quarantine on the diamond princess, the couple will spend 14 more days under quarantine in texas before their finally allowed to go home. Still no sign of a missing couple near port grace. They were last seen at a rental home on friday. Ktvus Christina Rendon talked to search and rescue teams this morning. Reporter at this point there have been no sightings and no clues as to the whereabouts of this couple. Now search and are out again, looking for 77year old carol kiparsky. At a briefing, they learned the couple is familiar with the area, they rented out this same bnb years before. And now out searching for them in rugged terrain. The couple never checked out of the home, and missed an appointment on sunday. The airbnb was left in a manor that leads us to believe they didnt plan on leaving. There was open food inside of the house. Its definitely out of the ordinary for them, talking to the family. Thats why were out here in full force. Reporter in addition to the various search and rescue crews, officials are also using drones to help in the search. Kiparsky and irwin are in good health. Were told theyre used to hiking. Right now the search is in a roughly two mile radius. In inverness, Christina Rendon. California is one of 14 States Holding primaries on super tuesday, which will determine 36 of the delegates needed for the democratic president ial nomination. Bernie sanders campaigned in the east bay this afternoon. Thousands of people packed the crane way pavilion in richmond for his get out the vote event. Sanders said he plans to defeat President Trump. He also said he thinks americans are tired of income inequality, and what he called the greed, and corruption of the Trump Administration and big corporations. They are tired of three people owning more wealth than the bottom half of america. They are tired of tax breaks for billionaires when a half a million americans are sleeping out on the streets. Actor and activist danny glover introduced senator sanders, saying that he is creating a movement that will transform this country. Before he took the stage there, senator sanders spoke with our political reporter greg lee about a number of topics. Greg lee is here now with more on that conversation. At this point, many consider senator sanders to be the front runner in this democratic primary. But still theres a long way to go. The staff understands how critical california will be in this primary. That is just one topic topic we touched on. Looking forward to super tuesday, how important is it for your team to do well in this state. This is california. Last i heard this is the largest state in america, its the state with more delegates. Obviously, california is enormously important. Im just very, very proud that we have thousands and thousands of volunteers who are out every weekend. Every weekend, were knocking on 100,000 doors. I think thats unprecedented. Were going to work as harded as we can to win this state, because the candidate who wins this state is in a very strong position to win the nomination and defeat the most dangerous president in modern america history. Homelessness is a major issue. What do you tell bay area voters about the importance of addressing it . Tonight, unbelievably in the richest country of the history of the world, 500,000 americans, including 30,000 veterans are sleeping out on the streets or in emergency shelters. That is immoral. That is wrong. On top of that, you have 18 million families spending half of their income on housing. That is insane. Our proposal is to build 10 Million Units of affordable, and low income housing, to make sure that working families dont get forced out of their homes through gentrification. You were critical of Mike Bloomberg. He thinks he can buy this race. But he is rising in the polls. Are you concerned about that . I dont think american democracy is about a billionaire buying an election. Especially somebody who has a record that he has. Instituting in new york city when he was mayor, a racist stop and frisk policy. Absolutely disgraceful. This is a guy who said, one of the richest people in america said we should cut social security, medicare and medicaid. This is a guy who was not sympathetic to raising the minimum wage. Not sympathetic to raising taxes on the rich, so he may have all the money in the world, but at the end of the day, i do not believe that his money is going to elect him president. Senator, last one for you, if you win the noattract some o voters that have been supporting some of your more centrist counterparts . Thats a very fair question. I think among all of the democratic candidates, and i think among virtually all of our supporters, there is an understanding that while we have difference as democrats our differences pale compare to the differences we have with donald trump. I have said and i think probably all of my opponents have said were going to band together, no matter who the nominee is, to make sure that we defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country. Now mayor bloomberg did hit from some sanders supporters. Sanders said he rejects anyone who attacks others online. Going back to Mike Bloomberg, more than the combined total of all the other candidates combined, and here we are, not even in march yet. And 41 million just in california. He is banking heavily on the super tuesday states. You see the attention hes getting. Hes now fourth in the polls nationally, and has certainly got the attention of the other candidates in the race. It will be interesting to see what happens. One interesting note about this, bloomberg said no matter who wins the nomination, if its not him, hes willing to spend a billion dollars to help that democrat. Today senator sanders spokesperson was asked about that, he said we will not accept that money if we are the nominee. And mayor bloomberg could be in the debate on wednesday in las vegas. He has not made it yet, but that would be really something to see him on that stage. Bloomberg has definitely changed the conversation as of late. Agreeing, thank you very much. Michael bloomberg as we mentioned is rising in the polls, despite not being on the ballot in the first four states. Still not known if he will qualify for the debate in las vegas. He needs one more state, or National Poll putting him over 10 to qualify. Early voting is now underway in nevada, where caucuses will be held on saturday, and voters go to the polls on february 29th, in South Carolina, where joe biden is polling in first place. He does have to win the South Carolina primary. Not just do well. He has to win. Recent polls in nevada show elizabeth warren, tom steyer, and Amy Klobuchar all knotted for third place after Bernie Sanders and joe biden. West virginia wants to see more people voting in this years president ial primary, but not necessarily at the polls. The state is allowing mobile voting for those who have a problem actually getting to the polls. Mack warner is a former Army Lieutenant colonel, and he sees the technology as the answer for soldiers who may be abroad. The problem is, only about 13 of active duty military get their votes counted, and this is due to a number of hurdles that are placed in either not knowing about the election, forgetting about it, or being deployed. West virginia is expanding the apps usage in this election, with the hopes of keeping disabilitied people, and the military part of the democratic process. A Mountain Lion attack over the weekend forced crews to close the park. Maureen naylor is at that preserve entrance there in los altos with more information tonight. Reporter frank, officials verify it was indeed a Mountain Lion that pounced a little girl here at rancho san antonio, and they did dna testing on clothing and medical equipment that was used on her. They say its a rareencounter, and theyre using spec trained dogs in hopes of tracking down the puma. Hi folks, the parks closed today. Reporter all day long, park rangers turned away hundreds of visitors near los altos hills. We came here because we have a free day, so we wanted to enjoy the ranch, but its closed. Reporter the popular hiking area was temporarily closed, and signs posted this president s day holiday, warning people to stay out after a Mountain Lion injured a girl yesterday. It happened while hiking on the wildcat loop trail. Theyre hiking on a well known trail. A lion appeared out of nowhere and started to get ahold of a 6 yearold girl in the group. Reporter he says one of the adults was able to push the Mountain Lion, which then retreated. Fortunately, the girl had minor injuries and did not require stitches. Monday morning, a camera in the park captured this image of the Mountain Lion, which officials suspect is the same puma involved in the incident. Likely a male, but we dont know with 100 percent certainty. Reporter four specially trained dogs and their handlers were brought in monday to track the puma. Theyre actively out there trying to get a scent on the lion and get it up a tree so they can mobilize it. Right now, were in that holding pattern, of lets wait, and let the dogs do the work. Reporter a family of pumas was spotted, but there wasnt any contact like this latest incident. I just would really ask that everyone respect the closure. We have had some people trying to sneak in. Its not going for well. There are citations being issued. So we need the
