Im julie haener. We begin with Pete Buttigieg is dropping out of the race. He came in fourth place in South Carolina making history as the first lgbt candidate to win delegates in the race for the nomination of a Major Political party. Senator Bernie Sanders spoke to an enthusiastic crowd in san jose today as he ramps up support ahead of super tuesday. Our political reporter greg lee is here now, a lot going on with super tuesday a couple weeks away. Kind of been a rapid pace here. That announcement about mayor pete came in the middle of Bernie Sanders stump speech during that rally today. Former south bend mayor Pete Buttigieg just officially on air called it quits for his campaign after coming out on top of the Iowa Caucuses and a strong finish in new hampshire. He looked promising. The disappointing finishes in more diverse states like nevada, South Carolina pointed towards the end of his historic run. We must recognize that at this point in the race the best way to keep faith with those goals and ideals is to step aside and help our party and our country together. So tonight i am making the difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the presidency. I will no longer seek to be the 2020 democratic nominee for president , but i will do everything in my power to insure that we have a new democratic president come january. Mayor pete spoke to a crowd of supporters in south bend just a short time ago. Buttigieg failed to build the Broad Coalition of voters he needed, something senator Bernie Sanders has continued to do successfully. Sanders held a rally in san jose this afternoon. He spoke to nearly 10,000 people staying consistent with his gain message. He drew sharp contrast between himself and the winner of South Carolinas primary, former Vice President joe biden. Joe biden voted for terrible trade agreements like nafta and pntr with china that cost us millions of good paying jobs. My point here is not to just be negative about joe. My point is to ask you all what campaign is going to defeat donald trump . Now whatever your feelings about Pete Buttigieg, no doubt he broke barriers being that first lgbt of a major party to do so well as he has done. I dont think this is the end of Pete Buttigieg. He was a moderate. Who benefits from him dropping out of the race for president . Right. You look at the makeup of whats left, you look at joe biden who is a moderate who continues to surge after South Carolina. I think likely thats where we will see some of those voters go. Thats a good point because in the state of california, which is part of super tuesday, many voters have held onto their ballots, a lawaiting to see wha happens. This is case in why they did th who do you think is next . I think amy klobuchar. You look at her numbers and how shes been polling especially in some of these super tuesday states and the bottom line is monday. Once you run out of money and campaign donations, what do you do . Thats the other question about Pete Buttigieg is he had major billion therapy backers, which has always been a point of contention for some of the candidates, some of them here in the bay area. So do some of them now throw their support and their treasure behind one of these other candidates . Well have to wait and see. Thank you. Senator Elizabeth Warren doesnt plan to be in california until tomorrow, but her campaign has been holding get out the vote events throughout the state. Warren supporters have been working out of four offices in 63 different staging locations. In north beach in San Francisco several elected leaders helped kick off todays efforts including state senator scott weiner. We just got to make sure people are getting the message. A lot of people are voting late because theyve waited to see how things are going and we just got to let people know why she is the best choice. Senator warren is set to visit california tomorrow. Shell be delivering a speech to a group of janitors in east l. A. A reminder, stay with ktvu for complete coverage of super tuesday. Well have the latest results beginning at 4 p. M.
