KTVU The Ten Oclock News On KTVU Fox 2 July 13, 2024

This site is currently being secured, fenced, and it is being secured by federal personnel. Governor newsom joined governor libby schaaf and Public Health officials to explain the specific details. Good evening. I am frank somerville. And i am julie haener. They say, the ship is expelook is right now. As you can see, its about 10 to 12 miles off the coast of pacifica, roughly 2 hours from the port of oakland. Officials say, the ship will block at the outer terminal, on the bay bridge side not far from the toll booth. Earlier today, sky fox captured crews getting ready for the arrival, on the 11 acre site for 12 . It has more than 3000 passengers and crew. 21 of them have tested positive, so far, for covid19. Jesse gary will have reaction from people in oakland, but first, we go to greg liggins with more on where the passengers will go they are taken off that ship. Reporter so far, officials have not given us an exact time of when the ship is going to arrive at the port of oakland, but the governor did say, its going to arrive sometime tomorrow. What officials did give us is a logistical rundown of whats going to happen, and it all began this afternoon when a group of medics boarded the ship to assess the health of everyone on board. Once we have performed that assessment, we will know who needs to be transferred, most rapidly, once the ship does tie up at oakland. Reporter nearly 11 acres at the port of oakland is being fenced in and secured to transition those aboard the grand princess. Those in acute need of medical care will leave first, taken to hospitals around the bay area. Of the nearly 2500 people on board, 962 are californians. They will be second off. They will be prioritized. Those california residents will be secured, boarded onto appropriate vehicles, and brought, again, with authority to Travis Air Force base for a 14 day quarantine. Reporter additional california passengers will go to miramar near san diego. For noncalifornians, its either Lackland Air Force base in texas, or Dobbins Air Force base in georgia, for quarantine. Chartered flight from Oakland International airport will carry passengers and crews domestic, and international. But there will be no contact with general population of the terminals. This will be separate at the oakland airport. All of these individuals are being processed with the state department and others will be chartered. Ved to travis and other bases across california, and potentially across the nation or to their home countries, they will not be tested here. They will be tested there. Reporter so far, 19 crewmembers have already tested positive for the virus. Wants all passengers have left, those crewmembers and any others not leaving the ship will remain quarantine the board the grand princess. Once the disembarkation is complete, the ship will depart oakland. No one will be quarantined in oakland or be released into our community. Reporter the governor says, the turnaround time for this entire operation should be two or three days, best case scenario. As for what happens to the ship and the crew once it leaves the port of oakland, that is still being worked out, but the government says, it will not be returning to the bay area. Greg liggins, ktvu fox 2 news. Thank you. Lets go to jesse gary in the newsroom. Some people are worried about the cruise ship coming to oakland. Reporter thats putting it mildly. Politicians to everyday people, say caution, followed by concerns over safety in oakland. Reporter oaklands port has been a haven for maritime activity since the 1800s. Monday, it will become californias largest test case in an effort to disembark over 1000 people, who have possibly been exposed to covid19 coronavirus. Its an emergency for all of us. Everyone needs protective. Reporter Council President Rebecca Kaplan, sending a cautious note as the grand princess gets set to settle in. She worries that the city is itself in need of protecting its residents who are most at risk from the docking. While they are putting this need on oakland to help others, what is the state going to do to protect the Oakland Community . We have an urgent need for hand washing stations and him some attention to make sure everyone, including the homeless, are kept safe. Reporter union park workers are on edge, unsure if their services will be used in an area under their jurisdiction, and if so, if safety protocols will be in place. If we are going to be asked to provide labor of this vessel, we want to do it in the safest manner possible for our members. We want to make sure that whatever happens between the vessel, and politicians, but we dont put nobodies safety at risk. We want to make sure everyone has the proper protective equipment to deal with the vessel, and proper training. Reporter for City Residents and those who live close enough to see the port, now home to controversy, mixed feelings on an operation that could put others at risk. It kind of made me feel like they always say oakland is the stepchild. What i understand, controls are being put in place to manage the ship. Its expected to dock in oakland. Something has got to be done. As long as it is handled correctly, i am cool with it. Reporter and if things go well, some oakland residents wonder why this city is taking on a problem that originated on the other side of the bay. Council president Rebecca Kaplan says, she wants to see state guidelines put in place, so if there is a next time, one city isnt asked to shoulder another citys problems. Jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. Back to you. Thank you very much. We spoke by phone to one of the passengers on the grand princess cruise ship. Michael bell from chico says, he is trying to stay optimistic about the next phase. They are trying to keep us im sorry. Im probably over the edge right now, as far as being upset with the whole thing, but we are trying to keep a happy face. Reporter bell says, he is eager to get off the ship and says, the ship is starting to run low on food. Joining us now to talk more about all of this is hill six. I feel like there is a lot i should be worried about, but i havent changed anything in the course of my day. Should i be more concerned . I am glad you are bringing this up. I think we have an info epidemic. There is so much information out there. Its important we go to the right sources, the centers for disease control, your local or state health department. Thats where you need to go to get your health information. Everywhere else, we dont know what the credibility of that source is, so for the average person who is young and healthy, the risk of coronavirus is still low, but the people who are being severely affected by this disease are people in their 70s and 80s, who have underlying medical conditions already. What can you tell us about the mortality rate . We heard the numbers very. They are changing every day from 2 to 3. 4 . Where are we today . How many people potentially die when they get this virus . Whats important to understand here is that coronavirus, overall, when people get it, its usually a mild illness. There is a little bit higher percentage of people who are getting a moderate illness, but very few people who are getting severe illness. Once again, those are people with underlying medical conditions who get the severe medical illness, where they have to be on a respirator, and so forth. For the majority of people, they are Walking Around and okay. A lot of them are asymptomatic. Did you say 10 . The thing we need to understand is, if we started testing everyone, we would find a lot more people who have the mild disease or no symptoms at all. That would drives the total number of positive cases up and the mortality would go down. As a doctor who studies these types of things, if there was one thing to say to people watching right now, what would be your biggest concern . What do you want them to go away from here with tonight . There is two words i would like to say. Be prepared. Not scared. We dont function better when we are scared. Coronavirus doesnt go away. If we are scared, we are not going to find a magical cure, but if we are prepared and doing the right things to keep ourselves clean, and make sure that if we have symptoms that are concerning, we are not passing it on to others, thats all we can do at this time. A lot of people say to wash your hands more frequently for at least 20 seconds. I traveled this weekend. I noticedline for people to wash nds and i saw a few people wearing masks. Will masks protect you . Im glad you asked. The recommendations from cdcr, if you are not sick, you do not need to wear a mask those who need to wear a mask our second people who are taking care of sick people, but for healthy people, like me and you, anywhere in public, we do not. So that cant necessarily protect your. Right. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. The number of new cases reported this weekend in the bay area. Its going to linger down and drift kind of like this over the next couple of days. As it does, and as you can see, it is throwing clouds in our direction. Those clouds, a couple times this week, could deliver a sprinkle, but will it be measurable . Probably not. The plan this week is, we could change, but right now thats the plan. Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy all week. If it came off, it moves farther north. Perhaps, we could see something.
