Medical grade masks sitting in warehouses to be auctioned off. A ktvu investigation. Then at 10 30, giving birth during a pandemic. How couples are changing their plans to stay safe and stay together. We are concerned erica might not get to meet her right away. Because people need masks, we need masks. We have all heard the pleas for physical protective equipment being made all over the country. Now a ktvu channel 2 news investigation has found that masks come ventilators and other supplies are being auctioned off online. Investigative reporter brooke sharon uncovered thousands of masks sitting in a warehouse and were sold to the highest bidder. Reporter a website that sells a variety of government surplus has states in a fierce battle over a pallet of respirator masks and they are all expired, still it didnt stop them from being sold for a huge markup. On the front lines these are valuable resources and online theres money to be made. I think thats wrong. Reporter pallets of n95 respirators , like this one, auctioned off for thousands of dollars. And one auction there were two bidders from new jersey fighting back and forth trying to get this pallet of n95. Reporter Mark Lindquist is an air force veteran and just wanted to help amid the coronavirus pandemic and looked into buying masks to donate to his va hospital in phoenix. I believe everybodys first focus should be, lets make sure our people dont die. Reporter which brought him here to a website that resells government surplus, like a military 4 x 4 with this tanker truck, even a helicopter from Pennsylvania State police, or the 950,000 plane. But what lindquist found was marked up surgical masks. I had to watch those three pallets of masks set there. So it tells me that the leaders arent trying hard enough, quite honestly. Reporter bidding started in florida at 11,500, thats about . 67 a mask. Then days of bidding ramping up a couple weeks ago, duking it out california and new jersey. Sometimes minute by minute. The winning bid, new jersey at 26,900 for nearly 7700 respirators. Thats roughly 350 a mask. That mask sitting in a warehouse in florida, that was government surplus, shouldve been in the hands of somebody in a hospital in new york city this past week. Reporter to make matters worse it was possibly Government Agencies bidding against one another for what was originally Government Property into these masks were expired, by many years. Still, no better than no mask at all. I think its ridiculous because all of the hospitals right now are running low on supplies and we need them for patients and employees and staff. Reporter it was cold and isolated insulin and the private seller was blamed even though the Company Acted as auctioneer. We found is the coronavirus outbreak grew, so did the sales. Pallets of respirators going for 6000 on january 20th. Then 21,000 on march 10th and jumping to that 26,900 on march 17th. Its sad that people will actually hold materials and try to wait for somebody to buy it at a higher rate. Reporter exactly one year ago a pallet of these trend 98 n95 masks went for 250 or . 25 apiece. We are talking about people hoarding these goods and materials on an industrial scale for the purpose of manipulating the market and ultimately deriving when full profits. Reporter attorney general william barr explained President Trump signed an executive order to address hoarding and price gouging on scarce medical supplies. But if you are sitting on it, on a warehouse with masks, surgical masks, you will be hearing a knock on your door. There planet says it is not under investigation and a spokesperson said that Company Took Action to remove n95 masks and other medical supplies from inventory, returning them to the federal government so they could get in the hands of health workers. We need to get these things moving and i, as an american citizen, and asking for our leaders to do things now. Get a plan reporter the plan now says of plan is to identify any high Priority Medical supplies and return them so they can get to areas of need. But we found ventilators like this one still for sale. The company insists its taking additional steps to respond to the pandemic. Right now we have people making masks, First Responders using them, auctions of respirators and surgical gloves and they have since disappeared from that website. Gov planet also removed all the evidence we found of the n95 masks. All right, we got rain back in the bay area forecast. Not for your friday, but for your saturday and sunday.
