And again, we are confident we will see progress. 4 july Holiday Weekend coming up and the recent surge in cases, Governor Newsom also urged everybody to avoid large crowds and family gatherings. More than 240,000 coronavirus cases in california over 4000 cases in the last 24 hours which is the lowest daily increase. 6000 160 people have died here in our state. Theres more than my bigger part of, that is 73 more deaths in the last 24 hours, hospitalizations are up 3 and i suitcases up three have since yesterday. The june jobs report is in and the National Numbers directly better than expected. Employers adding a record for 20 million jobs is the appointed rates now sits at 11. 1 , leisure and hospitality saw the largest growth, breaking records from these industries among the hardest hit by the pandemic shutdown seeing more than two minor jobs dated june but its not all good news. We go now for more. It california to get out of this abyss economically, we strike a workable balance between health needs and economic needs. In california, new unemployment claims remain extraordinary high according to labor lawyer and former edd director michael bernick. There down slightly from the previous week. Just for this most recent week, we still had 280,000 new employment claims file the california, way above what we were averaging prior to the pension. With new virus cases spiking, these numbers closure orders made this week. Up to now, as you say, we had a clear plan of reopening various stages for the first time these stages seem to be halted and even some reopening close. So, many recently hired or rehired folks are likely to be laid off again and or businesses who hung until now may not be able to do so any longer. We may well see even larger numbers, even above the very high number of 279,003. The largely untouched Public Sector is now getting hammered. Finally, people may be reluctant to spend in such uncertain times. New plug claims will increase and, for many employers, they hung out and hung on and hung on. Sometime soon, continued lockdowns will have more devastating effects unless the federal government seriously comes up with a lot more relief which is already delayed until this month and month maybe possibly into next. Heal clara county announced new Health Orders which would serve as longterm measures to reduce the spread of covid19. The order allows certain additional businesses to resume including hair and Nail Services and small gatherings. But only with the limitation of strict rules on social distancing and the use of Face Coverings as well as limits to capacity. These principles are outdoors is safer than indoors. More physical distance safer than less distance. Fewer and briefer contacts with others, safer and more or longer contents, Face Coverings should be worn consistently and become the new normal. And some higher risk settings cannot safely open at this time. The new order will go into effect july 13 or when it receives approval from the state which ever is later. San Francisco City officials and Committee Leaders urging people across the city and the area to stay home over the fourth of july weekend, officials have seen an alarming increase in Coronavirus Infections and hospitalizations in recent weeks, indicating the start of a surge. The San Francisco department of Public Health director and several local leaders held a Virtual Meeting today to remind people about the importance of staying home despite the upcoming holiday. To socialize virtually, where Face Covering and stay safe, keep your family and your neighborhood and community safest possible. Stay at home and be safe. I mean, the last thing you want to do is sacrifice somebody in your family and the last thing i want to go to is lose another friend. It the doctor says while hospitals are not overwhelmed right now, the rate of covid19 hospitalizations was up 61 in San Francisco over the past week. Officials will be monitoring conditions of the next few days reposes restrictions. The state superintendent of public instruction tony thurman said today he is concerned about the Mental Health children when classes resume in the fall. Furman says students have been deeply impacted by the pandemic and for schools to reopen, they are going to need proper supplies as well as counseling to help many of the students. The really is our students are deeply impacted by the pandemic as, you know, for our schools to reopen they will need all kinds of personal protective equipment. The state is providing some but it is a partial amounts. You know, we need to have more counseling available for art students with experiencing depression as part of the pandemic thurman also said he is grateful to the state for the budget just signed by the governor which does not make cuts to education but he says without additional help, schools could see hardship over the next couple of years. Track across the country sunbelt states are seeing a rise in new Coronavirus Infections can the latest outbreak League Officials to crackdown on mask wearing and social distancing. Jonathan seri has more now from atlanta. Cancel firework shows and close beaches, that is the norm this fourth of july weekend with at least three dozen states reporting more Coronavirus Infections, california shutdown Indoor Dining and miami is opposing a night curfew and restaurant employees say the new orders are devastating. We been here since 2008. Since 12 years. The family. Florida, california and texas are seeing record numbers of positive tests in recent days. Critical care beds in houston are quickly disappearing and elective surgeries in south florida have been canceled for a second time. Ron desantis decided not to reimpose a shutdown, rick scott defending the decision saying people need information, not mandates. They are not consistent with a message, we have to be very consistent with a message and talk to people, people are smart, they will make decisions. Public Health Officials have brained the recent rise on not Wearing Masks and social distancing and they are cracking down on folks who do not follow the orders. Violators of mask mandates could face hundreds of dollars in fines for cities like miami and west hollywood. It lasts because it takes something off her plate we have to be defensive about or explain to customers who do not want wear a mask. President trump says he does not plan to issue a nationwide mask mandates. We are learning more about a meeting for zescol administrators in the south they may have exposed to thmeet for the Santa Clara County days later, one of the attendees tested positive for the virus. Elissa harrington has been working on the story and she joins me now with more on what she has learned. It has been 13 days since the meeting and according to district officials, nobody else has tested positive for covid 19 but certainly brings up questions as to why the meeting was held in person and what Health Guidelines are in place now. The june 25 Board Meeting for the Unified School District posted on youtube, stella kemp mentioned a Leadership Meeting days earlier at the Educational Options campus where attendees may have been exposed to the 19. Unfortunately one of the members of the Leadership Team tested positive for company days following fridays meeting. Since then we have taken the following steps, cleaned and sanitized the meeting location and all attendees quarantined according to directions from the county health department. It the district is backtracking on her remarks saying reports are inaccurate and she misspoke. Part of the statement from the district reads for clarification at last weeks Board Meeting, the doctor misspoke when she is the word corn to accomplishments to see shelterinplace. We are following the county shelterinplace orders in the county. The district would not say why the meeting was held in person rather than mostly in the midst of a pandemic. She would not tell me how many people were exposed. The board of trustees voiced concerns saying 45 people were there. It i got several calls from educators panicked about the exposure with the principal meeting and i personally was surprised because of what i heard other School District to with the meeting around 45. The board president said attendees had the option to participate via zoom and everybody who attended practiced social distancing. She wrote attendees said at least six feet apart, wore masks, and eight lunch outside. In addition, doors were left open for ventilation. The office of education said the district followed social distancing guidelines and schools are considered an essential function. When i reached out to the Santa Clarita public of the they sent me a statement. In this case its not clear why meeting in person was necessary, it is a lesson for other Government Agencies even though they have the authority to hold an in person meeting, doesnt mean they should exercise the right to do so. Just officals say nobody at the meeting has contracted the virus. St. Clair county department of education says schools will follow county Health Guidelines when they reopen. Elissa harrington. Coming up on 4, white officer opened fire in the ongoing search for a suspect. First, complaints keep piling up about the state being too slow to process unemployment claims coming up next we talk live with state senator scott wiener on his proposal to try to fix the problem. Friday a warmup in fact the hotspots back into the mid to upper 80s particularly the forecast tomorrow, into the weekend, patchy morning fog warmer for the fourth of july but warm, take a look at inland temperatures creeping back up into the low possibly mid 90s this weekend. Today we have this, low clouds and fog is a bit of a factor near the coastline but you will notice we actually have a little bit of clearing offshore so more sunshine with that from the beaches out towards pacifica and San Francisco ocean beach and the headlands as well. Current numbers checking in San Francisco 66, san jose in the mid70s, concord 76 and redwood in the upper 80s. Here is a live camera looking towards downtown San Francisco, haze in the sky but still, lots of sunshine, but this afternoon, here is the plan for friday, it will be a warmer for us with temperatures in the 60s, 70s, and 80s so patchy morning fog partly sunny, even mostly sunny skies once again and tomorrow should be a little warmer compared to today. We will continue to turn up and warm up temperatures as we head into saturday for the fourth of july, we talk more about the forecast on the fiveday coming up with your full forecast and a little bit. Sounds it will be a warm weekend looking forward to it. Think. A brush fire on the shoulder of interstate 580 eastbound in livermore earlier this morning caused major traffic delays. The fire started around 10 30 on the shoulder of the freedom this morning west of the North Livermore exit. Authorities shut down lanes of the freeway near the fire causing delays for at least 90 minutes. The fire burned about 20 acres total before firefighters got it under control, no word on how the fire started. Track state lawmakers blasting California Development department saying its failing be very people it is supposed to serve, scott wiener says both of their offices have been overwhelmed by people calling for help getting jobless benefits. Some artwork residents telling them they have now gone without for several months, there was a request for a legislative Audit Committee looking into the problems there at edd. It edd is truly filling the states, people are suffering tremendously. We have constituents who have gone without benefits from edd since march. Its actually heart wrenching, the stories. Constituents who depleted their entire life savings going into extreme debt in deep panic. Its estimated over one in three California Workers has now filed for unappointed benefits since the pandemic began. Me now the talk about the ongoing issues at edd as state senator scott wiener, thank you for being here, what is behind the delays . How do you propose fixing them . I think it started because edd has was staffed and we were at 16 or 17 of employment and that we were overwhelmed. Early on i cut the agency some slack because it was an unprecedented situation in terms of fast rise. We are now four months in and edd is not doing what needs to do, there are so many californians waiting for unappointed checks for months and you are really struggling to pay the rent and put food on the table and get somebody on the phone when they get something on the phone they do not get accurate information, the states can be corrected and so forth, we have more resources and edd and they are heading up which is a good thing but its not happening quickly enough and by august every day there are numerous calls from people at the end of the rope because they do not know max ming out credit caway. If staffing is one of the main concerns, how do you get the agency to hire more quickly . They have been hiring people, but, that of course, people have to be trained. One of the situations happening is people finally get through to somebody and the person does not have all of the information they need and if you had to call 300 times it gets ugly on the phone and they tell you to the website, its not a satisfactory answer. My office is helping animals number of people coming for us sometimes it is slow to get a response. So, we unfortunately are muddling through this right now and its a failure for the agency. Way too here at ktvu have been getting calls saying they called numerous times and cannot get the satisfactory answers, so, what do we do from here . You mentioned the agency is hiring, but, he also mentioned it is still not enough. Yes, there have been some improvements, it just is not happening quickly enough. For my perspective, my staff and the districts doing heroic work every day, what they are doing is helping people get on planet, we are triaging for individuals in the district. Edd announced a policy for legislators we could get a case expedited once per week which is unacceptable. One person every week to get benefits you are entitled and we have been advocating that needs to be a lot more. At this point it is triaged. Im hopeful it gets fixed over time the problem is people are desperate right now and they need benefits right now, they are entitled to those benefits. When this is done, we need to do a severe audits to make sure this never happens again. I do what the spokeswoman for edd said today, recognizing this is an unprecedented situation working around the clock, in the midst of a massive hiring efforts but as far as you are concerned the efforts made thus far are not enough. Yes, to be clear, the folks here are very committed, not trying to intentionally denying people benefits. Comes with fraud and there are various challenges. These are the people working hard under a lot of stress and trying to do the right thing to help people. Its a system failure. Granted this is a once in a 100 year pandemic with another 100 years you know, you have to be prepared to pivot and be nimble when an unprecedented expected economic meltdown happens. That did not happen here, we are triaging and really putting pressure on the agency making improvements. It has to happen a lot faster. Right, as you mentioned once, once its over sooner rather than later the system can be a valley, state senator scott wiener always a pleasure. Thank you. Think of having me.
