Secretary of state mike pompeo is warning users their personal information could be going straight to the chinese government. Their national security, their facial recognition patterns, it could be information about the residents, their phone numbers, their friends, who they are connected to. Secretary of state mike pompeo has been requested to provide a classified briefing on tiktok and other Tech Companies with ties to the Chinese Communist party. Ray bogan, President Trump toda signed an executive order to prioritize hiring americans in tech and other destroys. The white house says this order her help to combat what the president call this mess use of h1b visas. H1b should be used for top, highly paid talent to create american jobs, not as inexpensive Labor Program to destroy american jobs. Tech companies have said that restrictions on immigration could threaten americas place as a draw for talent from all around the world. Joining us now to talk more about the implications of this order is immigration attorney donald smith from the law office s of litman and smith. Thank you for joining us. The president s order her ensure that federal agencies put the emphasis on hiring American Worker as opposed to Foreign Workers on h1b visas. What kind of effect do you think this has of more broadly on the economy and more specifically on the tech sector . Actually, i think the effect is actually going to be greater on the government. You know, the government well, i did a Little Research on the top 100 government contractors. By and large, they all hire h1b workers from abroad, but its not a major part of their workforce, but they provide particular specialty knowledge to provide i. T. To our Government Agencies. If the Government Agencies were actually able to hire u. S. Workers, i think they would have already done so. You know, h1b processing itself is an expensive process. And so, you know, u. S. Employers would prefer to hire u. S. Workers and save the money. I think we need an Education Program to train u. S. Workers so that they are qualified for those top jobs. We know by and large most u. S. Citizens dont study science, technology, engineering, and math. India did a good job of grabbing its students and teaching them i. T. Jobs, and theyve come here to work. I actually this will test whether or not our government can run without those foreign i. T. Professionals, and im not sure that it can. Mean, the whole idea here is that this is going to lead lead to more u. S. Workers being hired for these tech jobs, but it sounds like you dont think that is likely to be the case here, envelope we do a better job of training in this country. We have not that many qualified u. S. Workers waiting in the wings to grab those i. T. Jobs. What does this do you heard, you know, some Tech Companies are worried, they are arguing that they put these together to draw the most talented companies from around the world. Is that likely to be the case, you think . In fact, thats already the case. You know, the president s memo from the executive order from last month that basically banned immigrant visas has caused a number of what would be h1b workers from abroad not to be able to come to the United States to fill those positions. As a result, even some u. S. Workers are being laid off because they dont have the h1b specialty worker to support. And, of course, the i. T. Companies are feeling the crunch of not having that Specialized Knowledge and support, what the services they provide. Interestingly enough, the result of this has been a number of our employers are actually having their employees not only work remote through from home here in the United States, but theyre left working remotely from home abroad. And of course it has hurt the i. T. Industry, and it is hurting the i. T. Industry, and i dont know how hurting our u. S. I. T. Industry helps the American Economy in the area it might, but with covid19, and people not being able to go to work otherwise, im not sure that it does help. And by and large, if were looking at the people who are really hurt mostly by the slowdown of our economy, its the service workers, and not those top level i. T. Professionals. Sure. Sure. All right. We have to leave the conversation there. Appreciate your insight on the topic. Immigration attorney donald smith. Thanks for coming on. Well, according to a recent study by Harvard Business school, people who work from home are happier and more productive. Christie of the Humane Society Silicon Valley. Thank you so much, christie, for joining me. Talk a little bit about what you did, the changes that you made early on during this pandemic. So, you know, with the shelterinplace, when it first came in, we had to shut all of our services down, but we continued to take in animals from partner shelters that were sicker and at risk, and because of that, we still need afternoon outlet for them, so we put them into foster homes, and we used those first two weeks to develop a virtual adoption process so that our animals could fiend homes pretty quickly. And how did that go . Did people warm up to the idea of rush is challenge adopting a pet . It was great. We werent sure how it was going to work at first, but the process we came up with, you can sign up online for an appointment, and once you get an appointment, speak with one of our adoption counselors, and you get to meet the animal on video chat. And if everything goes well, you can pay for the adoption fee online or on your phone, and set up another appointment to pick up the day after. Its been a very popular adoption process. We open the adoptions appointment about once a week, and it fills up, minutes. Its been pretty awesome. Yeah, thats great to hear. What about some other changes that youve had to make . Some of the other changes, you know, with having less people on site, we did have to increase our foster base to we pulled out we put out a call for foster homes, and got a tremendous response. About 3,000 people replied to our plea, which was incredible, and that allowed us to transfer animals from other shelters. Other things weve been doing is increasing our pet pantry program, which offers free food and supplies for the pets, so people who are either experiencing homelessness, or having financial troubles, weve ramped that up, so we thats also on our wish site for people who are interested in participating. Yeah, its really interesting to know that when you asked, so many were willing to answer that call to foster so many of those pets. How are the adoptions shaping up this year compared to last year . Have you been able to get a lot of pets into homes . Oh, we have. So so weve you know, it was a rampup process, and as we get better at this, we refined some of the processes, but weve been able to put about 1700 animals in new homes since the start of this, since mid march, and its slightly over what we did in the same time period last year, so thats been pretty cool, too, for us. Thats got to make you feel great. Thank you so much for coming on to talk to us about it.
