Santa clara county sheriffs investigators are trying to figure out how a handcuffed detainee in a San Jose Police officers car managed to get a gun and start shooting. It happened in a basement transfer entrance at the main jail. Reporter around sunrise, Santa Clara County sheriffs deputies ended an hourslong standoff with arrest suspect Joseph Castro. Castro was restrained in handcuffs in the rear of the patrol vehicle but somehow managed to break into the cargo area of the vehicle and access that officers firearm. Reporter San Jose Police say castro was arrested and charged two weeks ago for mail theft and for violating his probation. He was released due to the states zero bail initiative. He was arrested again early wednesday morning, and according to chief eddie garcia, while the arresting officer was doing paperwork at the main jail sally port, castro somehow got his cuffed hands from behind his back to in front of him. He then squeezed past a plexiglass barrier, got the officers spare gun, and started shooting. Slipping out of handcuffs is not impossible.
