Like this device to increase volume on your cell phone. phone ringing get details on this state program call or visit chances are you are doing a lot more home cooking during the pandemic and if you are sick of serving the same by things for dinner every single night, heres another reason to consider branching out your Cooking Skills and your pallet. I had a chance to talk with j. Kenji lopezalt. A chef, author and coowner of a bay area restaurant. It is called every night is pizza night and the book catches on the very timely thing of inclusion and diversity. For me, food has always been my entry point into learning about other cultures. Everybody around the world does in says it is so diverse and frequently because food is the weight we share with each other and the way, it is something we do every day and come together and plays a very important cultural role all over the world. I think teaching children about food from all over the world and teaching people they are different food experiences and different definitions of what could good food is and what the best food is, depending on where you are from and what experience you personally had, it is a good way of teaching empathy and understanding and the importance of understanding other cultures. Is good for raising healthy eaters. Eaters who will be adventurous and try a lot of Different Things. The real message is she thinks pizza is the best in the world and why would anything other than the best. She only ever wants to eat pizza and over the course of the book she learns there are different ways people define bests and you can still continue eating the best things in the world, but the whole variety of Different Things. And they are all best for different reasons. The book speaks to all the parents to say, my threeyear old what we anything but pasta with butter and cheese. Chicken nuggets. You have been there. You have been lucky enough to have one more mount the fee. And it would help broaden childrens pallets in a way that it is not you sit there and finish it until the plate is clean. I know everybodys experience will be different and i consider myself lucky we have a very nonpicky eater. She is very adventurous and loves eating things. For me, the key was involving her with cooking and reparation and every element of the food. I have some of her favorite tools. Basically i have this little stool that said she was under two years old, she would stay and help in the kitchen. And she has her own little whisk and knife. She loves peeling vegetables and i have a little more and pestle. So she likes grinding ginger which is actually helpful. Getting them involved in the cooking is really important and the other strategy we have is that when we serve meals, we dont ever make her her own special kids meal. She eats what we are eating whether we are at a restaurant or at home. And that has gotten us to eat a little bit healthier. And the real key is to give them a diverse set of things and dont force them to eat anything. If you give them carrots and spinach and chicken or whatever it is, it is okay if the date they decide, i dont like carrots today. I am only going to eat my spinach and chicken. And we let her have her opinion. She gets to tell it and have input into what she wants for dinner. We will discuss as a family and i started doing this with her but she is little and now she does it back to me. I will say, eat this chicken and the sugar. Now ate the chicken and yogurt together. See how it tastes. Now during meals she will be like papa, did this care into that sauce and then eat it together. It is so good. So she gets excited about coming up with combinations like that. Really, opening their mind to the things we experience as adults. The complexity of foods. Talking about how different cultures use chopsticks or eat with their fingers. There are all different ways you can give them new interesting things to do in emile. He also says even if your child refuses to try to food, track, track, again. Dont ever give up on the first or second try. You can be narrowing your childs pallet prematurely and he says parents should not let their own dislike of a certain food deter them from serving it to their children. And i will be honest and i will whisper. I cannot stand feta cheese. That the boys love it. I served them when they are little and they gobble it up and they are fine with it. I know you have two little girls at home and have you tried any of these ideas . You know, i like what he sa everyone eats the same thing. Something and i know they will not like it, i will make them something else. I think it is a good idea to make food, one this for the entire family and you know, a couple of different options and have them eat the same thing. What about you mike . We are not a restaurant in this house. You get one meal at dinner. If you are not into it, you will probably have a big wreck this. We are not want to make something on the site for you. And i did like what the chef said when he talked about you know putting things on the side of the plate and presenting it. We had a stirfry with a bunch of vegetables and would basically did that for the children that put them in Little Pockets on their plate and they experimented and it and had a vegetable and it worked. If we just presented it as a big stirfry, that probably would not have eaten it. So we did that and i like that technique because we do get a sense and i see they do eat more vegetables that way. Nice conversation guys. Enjoyed that. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, hundreds of students back in the classroom possibly later this month. It could happen. Frank malik oh joins us live with what is being called the impossible road. What a journey this was. It sounds crazy. Imagine a two week nonstop road from chile to antarctica. It has never been done before until now. We shot this feature back in february but we held onto it because of the pandemic. Here we go. Here is the impossible row featuring a teammate that grew up right here in the bay area. Good morning mr. Peterson. Good morning. Good to see you. John peterson is the principle of oaklands bridge academy. He is a Firm Believer in the power of positivity. Students are greeted with music every day, like on this morning in february. And the faculty huddles up before each school day. Is a tone setter for success. All Lessons Learned at petersons other loan love, rowing. Being in a school, it relies on teamwork and compassion and it relies on awareness and i think on the water it is the same principles. Peterson took a teaching sabbatical in september. He and five others did what no man ive ever done before. Row across the Bradley Drake passage. 13 days through the worlds most treacherous water. Facing frigid 30 foot waves. And the former yelp crew captain lived to tell the tale. Sitting in a washing machine with a blindfold on and the water being freezing basically. 0 degrees celsius or 30 degrees fahrenheit. That is the kind of feeling you get six elite athletes are attempting to survive arctic cold temperatures. The expedition was captured by the discovery channel. The row 90 minute shifts. Will go the impossible row. While three wood row , the others would eat and sleep night and day. 300 hours on the ocean which is to 10 hour brakes. We were always super interested in teams and how we wanted to try something that i evening rose our to be once in heart. Midnight rose or even harder. It is quiet. Cant really see very much. Peterson hit the wall on the far. Nauseous and fatigued. He barely made his shift during a stormy night. His solace, is 19monthold daughter marley. What i did was to set, marleys name. My daughters name. Every single stroke. And focusing on that really small thing. Looking at the front and sang her name. That is what got me through. Land on Christmas Day the ohana reached antarctica and with frostbitten toes and 20 pounds lighter, peterson was the first to step out of the boat. Exhausted but completely satisfied. I had the constant stress of light, oh my god i am not going to make it home to make it. I wont make it home to my wife and to be able to sit, and and say i will make it home. It felt like all the stress rolled off my body. And welcome back. Two weeks later, peterson was back at work. The impossible row complete the many reminders at the school. After all this was a teaching moment. Not just for his students but for peterson quickly. Is the same principle as being at a school being on the drake. Challenges come along and you rely on your team to get you through. If anybody else wants to row wreck with me, bring it home. Lets do it. I think it is safe to say, every bit of that name. He told me he appreciates everything. Just a little bit more now that he has been back, especially in his family and his little girl. His next adventure to scale mount lanier with one of his fellow rowers. That should be a piece of cake after what he went through back in december of last year. That is the latest from frank mallicoat. The physical strength and mental strength. An incredible incredible accomplishment. Frank, thank you for that. And one must story before we say goodbye. With a lot of people working from home and we have the distancelearning going on. Many people are looking into sheds as a possible solution to add more space in. Sales are booming. Companies that build custom sheds in the bay area essay covid19 has dramatically increased business. Many customers are looking to create a home office in the backyard to have to own privacy. The chest can cost as much is about 5000 and up to 18,000. The are warning customers to check local codes and ordinances in case you need a permit to build. That is pretty interesting. I was talking to some of my friends. Leasing out a little commercial space in the neighborhood to get out of the house for a few hours and have your own little office. Either that or a shed. I am not surprised. I and for it. I will look into that. What about you . I will to you. The house felt right before the pandemic but it feels awfully small now. I am thankful to have a cozy roof over my head. Sometimes i sit in my car nor in the car when im at the grocery store. That is my sad. Thank you for joining us. News is online at ktvu. Com.
