Still ahead, weve seen the video, woman calling police over black lives matter, approved a new law to discourage racist 911 calls. Coming up next we will hear morosely karen act. The San Francisco board of supervisors today unanimously passed an ordinance that would make it illegal for people to make discriminatory and racially biased 911 calls. It is called the caution against racial and exploitation actin also known as the karen act. Earlier today i spoke with a supervisor who introduced this measure and explains why he says it is so important, especially now. Have we have seen more so recently on social media what weve known for years, people make calls to 911 or to the police on people of color, black people, basically weapon eyes 911 and those emergency calls and at least the harm for black people and people of color. Select the death of george floyd where there was a call about something that was not an emergency it actually led to his death. If we go back to 1955 there were false accusations made about a black man and it led to his death. When people make these calls you see what happened someone called them Police People were just barbecuing, what happened here in San Francisco, couple call police for writing black lives matter on their own home. We have to make sure that we stop folks calling the police just because of someones racing going about their dayto day. How big of a problem do you think this is . I think it is a major problem. If it leads to one death is obviously too big of a problem. It can also lead to an assault and negative interaction between police and the black community and communities of color. So this law will hopefully stop people from making these frivolous races. And only Police Officer when theres a true emergency. How will this be enforced and you will be determining if this is in fact a racially biased phone call . The law has a civil penalty. If someone makes the call to Law Enforcement and something happens to that individual and if that individual decides to sue because of the harm caused there is at least a 1000 fine for the perpetrator and it could very well be more. But this is a commonsense law, not about folks who are in danger who feel there is a crisis not only call the appropriate authority when theres emergency. This is you cannot do it just because someone doesnt look like
