Hurricane zeta made landfall on the louisiana coast this afternoon as a category two storm. Heavy rains and maximum sustained winds of about 110 miles an hour are hitting the southeastern part of the state. This is the fifth named storm to hit louisiana in recent months, including hurricane delta, less than three weeks ago. We do expect hurricane zeta to continue to pose the greatest threat because of wind. Between 2 to 4 inches of rain are possible, with some areas getting as much is six inches from the central gulf coast through the mid atlantic on thursday. To give you a little bit of a timetable this afternoon, as the storm was approaching and making landfall, the conditions continually deteriorated to the point where the wind and rain was so strong you could barely see a block down. But then, as was forecasted, the eye of the storm came over new orleans and it got incredibly calm and just a matter of minutes. It was expected that after the eye continue to move to the north, the storm was moving very quickly at 25 miles an hour, the conditions would come back up. In fact, the National Weather service was even putting out warnings telling people, did not go outside, do not let your guard down, this is still a very dangerous situation. But for whatever reason, the storm never returned. No wind, no rain. It is still a very dangerous storm. In fact, just minutes ago, there was sustained winds in mississippi measured at over 80 Miles Per Hour and gusted over 100 Miles Per Hour and there is some significant damage as well. In fact, we just saw one video shared by the National Weather service that showed a roof being ripped right off its house. Im assuming you are in downtown new orleans and it looks like there are a lot of people out on the roads. Has there been any damage to new orleans that you are aware of . Reporter from the driving we have been able to see the main damage has been trees falling down. At the thing you have to understand is the power is out for most of the city. There are hundreds of thousands of people in this region without power right now. If you go down bourbon street, just a couple blocks down, it is completely dark. You cant see an inch in front of you. So those true damage assessments wont happen until tomorrow morning, once the sun comes up. Once you get into the French Quarter it is just too dark to see anything. We are tracking zeta right now. This is the radar satellite imagery and you can see how quick its moving. Thats where the rain is more like a half a foot of rain, 3 to 5 to 6 inches of rain. Sometimes you get 18 to 20 inches of rain, if its moving slow enough, but this thing is cooking going 25 miles an hour. Firefighters in Southern California continue to battle two large wildfires burning close to homes. The silverado fire has burned more than 13,000 acres near irvine in the fire is now 25 contained. More than 90,000 people in Orange County remain under evacuation orders because strong winds are still pushing flames in their direction. Tonight a man is recovering after he got stuck in some fishing line in the ocean about 50 yards offshore in Sonoma County and couldnt swim to safety. The team that responded told ktvus henry lee how they were able to save him. Reporter this is video showing the Sonoma County sheriffs helicopter plucking a man to safety along the coast. It happened at about 9 30 tuesday morning. We were dispatched for a subject who had fallen off of a cliff into the ocean. Reporter francisco want a burger as a Deputy Sheriff who fights as a tactical officer. Another deputy who lives and works in the area reached the man. He tried to rescue the guy by tossing a rope out to him. And fortunately, that wasnt able to work. Reporter that meant pilot paul bradley and carefully maneuver the helicopter near the victim. But the crew had to work quickly. This fellow had been in the water for probably about 45 minutes. Reporter luckily was wearing a wetsuit and a life jacket to protect from the goldwater. The helicopter landed nearby. He had a 100 foot rope. He attached himself with a harness and the pilot flew over the victim. He was about 50 yards from shore, but the crew quickly realized why he wasnt able to swim to safety. He was all tangled up in a court of some sort that was attached to his legs and was keeping him there. Reporter the paramedic cut him free and helicopter flew him back to shore. Thats ray chp helicopter took the man to the hospital. The sheriffs helicopter flies about 1000 missions each year and is one of the busiest in the country.
